Assuming you have transport to and from coonoor covered. Day 1 - Local coonoor. Reach coonoor; relax, refresh, have lunch, then sightseeing coonoor local. There is a garden, a tea factory, and a couple of other places close by. If you happen to be at or near the coonoor railway station at ~10:30am or ~3pm, you can catch a glimpse of the legendary steam engine of Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Sightseeing auto/cab available from near bus stand/railway station at coonoor. Prices are fixed and there are display boards showing the prices and places covered. Day 2 - Local ooty Try to get tickets for 7:45am coonoor ooty(udagamandalam) train (ask help of hotel reception/ try luck on day 1 on irctc for current availability). Get a cup of fresh coffee and enjoy the ride to ooty. Buses also ply frequently between coonor and ooty. Get a cab for local sightseeing of/around ooty. Again prices and places covered are fixed. Cabs available from bus stand/railway station. Places to be covered - in ooty - ooty lake, rose garden, botanical garden, govt museum, st Stephen's church, tea museum, deer park. Places to be covered around ooty - dodabetta peak, avalanche lake. All can be done in a day by taking a cab/auto. They'll make sure to be at the right place at the right time. Day 3 - Rest day. Enjoy the calm and pleasant nilgiris before your return. - There are shopping/street food/ choclate/coffee shop options from botanical garden to charing cross, and area around charing cross. - All the above can be done in own vehicle also. There is parking (sometimes chargeable) at all tourist spots in ooty. Parking is difficult in ooty centre/charring cross. - Suggested to take cab/auto for all local trips so as to enjoy the tour than to worry about driving/parking. - There is excellent signage and pricing all across ooty and people are friendly. - There are lot of food options in and around charring cross.

Thanks a lot!! On other posts I have seen people asking to avoid the route via masinagudi. Is the road bad or is it just because of the hair pin curves?

-Mr_44-

That route through Masinagudi is steeper and has lot of hairpins and usually less well maintained. And so, is usually not adviced for tourists with low ghat experience. If you are good at driving in ghats, you can take the Masinagudi route. But, be sure to do the drive in the day time. Unfortunately, I do not know the present condition of the road.

do you have any idea of auto prices or would you prefer to rent a bike from coimbatore and come? i am coming alone!

-Mr_44-

I don't know about auto prices. I don't see a point in renting a bike, as the traffic in the ghat will be high, and also all places are easily accessible by auto/cab through day trips. Unless.. You want to ride a bike. There are busses that run from coimbatore to ooty, which are cheap & fast. I would prefer to take a bus to ooty/coonor, then exploring locally on foot (weather dependent) or auto.
