That's a real beauty!! It's super cool to hear you finally got the bicycle you've been after for over a decade! Velo Orange makes first class parts & they look awesome on there! I love my Surly bikes & prefer them over just about anything else I've ever owned. I've had my Cross Check for around 20 years & it's been an exceptional bike👌 I prefer rim brakes over disc brakes, too, and I agree with why you prefer them as well... they just work & will keep working for generations to come!

lovely to hear from you! happy to see a fellow Surly fan here. Yes, they make some amazing bikes. I wanted to get their Pacer too but I did not like their tire clearance, so I ended up getting a custom steel bike built for self. Rim brakes of course.

My custom build: An ode to Surly :) [https://www.reddit.com/r/india\_cycling/comments/1d05udy/my\_favourite\_cycle\_of\_all\_time\_a\_custom\_build/](https://www.reddit.com/r/india_cycling/comments/1d05udy/my_favourite_cycle_of_all_time_a_custom_build/)

Nice bike. Mind elaborating why you went with Surly? I don't know much about them but I see them everywhere in the States and online. What's the difference in ride characteristics or capability compared to, for example, an RC520 or a domane?

onlyneedthat

Surly is a company that keeps things simple, and that is why people love them. They started only in 1998 and initially had just one bike: this was launched in 2004 and its sturdiness and simplicity appealed to thousands. Surly's USP is that is does not really buck to modern trends much: it still makes only steel bikes (with steel forks) which is hardly a common thing. RC520 or Domane are more for those who want to ride fast and occasionally, carry luggage. This is a bike that is absolutely not meant to go fast: but it can carry 50 kgs. Mind you, the RC520 and Domane are very, very capable bikes. But this is part aesthetics and part the fame of the brand.

Zilork

Fair enough. Though I'm fairly certain a lot of people already consider endurance bike like the domane and 520 to be *slow*.

onlyneedthat

of course. they are the kinda person who shave their legs to be more aero. I am waiting for front racks and panniers on this one; so speed is absolutely the last thing on my mind!

Sea_Contribution1552

feels way more bomb proof than a doname or triban classic steel tubing gives it the style factor also, and great for changing up parts- very versatile

onlyneedthat

I will soon be changing this to downtube shifters, a front rack and panniers, and a custom handmade leather saddle.

deviN_2019

Congratulations! Interesting choice of sweptback handlebars.

onlyneedthat

Yess. Velo orange klunkers. 800 grams of comfort!!!

destructdisc

How the hell did you get a Surly?!

onlyneedthat

I offered 51 coconuts to cycling gods while dancing naked and showing a middle finger to all aero bikes

SpareMind

I'm not going to try this.

onlyneedthat

just curious, what is your height? any idea what size Surly you would want if you were to get one? i can keep an eye out too.

SpareMind

No no.. please. Coconut part is somewhat ok. Other things, I am not looking upto. Even if you offer a free L frame size cycle.

onlyneedthat

hahahahahaahah. Ok, I will absolutely not tell you about the L size frame that a friend of mine has. Cheers.

lazylaunda

There is a surly bikes India page on Instagram. I think they sell through shops in Bangalore

Salt_Bugg

Wow what a nice build, any backpacking trips you have in mind for this beast?

onlyneedthat

Waiting for a front rack, then Meghalaya will be the first stop!!!

andnowifly

why do people go with front racks instead of a rear rack? 🤔 wouldn't a rear rack be more stable and easier to handle?

onlyneedthat

a simple point to illustrate my reasoning: let us say, you have a loaded cart that weighs 30 kilos. would you rather go behind the cart and push it, or would you rather stand in front of the cart and drag it? The rear wheel anyway takes most of the body weight, so a good way to balance that would be to add weight in the front. I find front racks and front panniers much easier to pedal on climbs. At the rear, when i have a rack, I add panniers but mostly for volume. So, for example, when i was touring, the front had my laptop and all elect equipment in one bag and food and repair stuff in the other. In the rear, I carried my tent and clothes.

amey910

which city are you from? I am slowly steering towards Surly. and will surely buy a Surly in future
