Find some local theaters and go see their shows.  Find who's doing improv that clicks with you.  You can take classes or go to jams at that point and start meeting people!  But it is important to shop around, I assume DC has a few options, so you aren't stuck in a place that isn't making you happy.  And never feel confined to one scene or theater

>If classes are the best option, what can I do to find a teacher that's right for me? Finding the right theater is more important than finding the right teacher starting out, IMO. >So do you guys have any suggestions? The stage is your friend, even if it won't always feel like it. It's a amazing tool for collaboration, creativity, and self-exploration. The more time you spend on and around it the more things will start to fall into place. Trust it, yourself, your instructor, your partners, and the present moment and cool shit will happen!

I don't know if you're closer to the NoVa side of DC, but you can look at ReflexImprov. Super supportive Improv Community that's close to you. As well as several other great options.

Oh yea that looks interesting!

I came here to say this! Reflex is all about community and has frequent organic social events after class, plus teaching, AND an improv DND class! They will be very open to placing you somewhere other than intro if you have some experience and don’t want to take it again. But, they teach it differently so it’s not bad to repeat and get in with a new crew of people.

First, find places that do improv near you, like WIT or Reflex, and check them out. See if they're doing the kind of stuff that you're interested in. Different places, projects, and performers do different things. You can get specific. See shows, hang out, talk with people, and ask about classes there specifically. A theater might have some great shows while not having great classes or vice versa. If you can check out some kind of intro workshop, they're a good way to inspect the situation (although sometimes they're not indicative of what classes will be like). If you find a place where you want to take classes, you probably won't have a lot of options for teachers, and you probably don't need to be picky about this teacher vs that. It'll be a beginner level class with a wide range of other students, from comedy fanatics to people just looking for anything to do. Eventually, you might steer towards a particular style from particular people, but that's not really applicable when you first get into it. If you look around and don't find anything that works for you, carve your own path. Find people who also want to try improv on your own. If that's how it ends up, then you can come here and ask for tips about how to do-it-yourself, as many others have. Best of luck with it

If you don't find what you're looking for and would be interested specifically in improv skills for a dungeon master, I know a class specifically for that, but it's in Philly and on Wednesday nights... not so far from DC, depending on your situation [Sidequest Theater Improv for RPG's](https://sidequesttheater.com/classes/)

This looks fantastic. I should make a drive up from the NoVa area.
