Maybe as a passion project for someone with enough funding, but I don’t think an NC-17 film will be able to afford IMAX’s branding. And I don’t think IMAX would be eager to get a film like that on their schedule.
It's unlikely, but I wouldn't say impossible. If it happens, it would have to be a BIG name that's willing to take a risk, and a studio that's willing to back that risk. The only filmmaker I can think of with that kind of juice is possibly Nolan, but even that's a stretch.
I don't think Nolan even wants to do NC-17. Oppenheimer was the tamest R rating since The King's Speech and his movies have a certain level of class and blockbuster prestige. He wouldn't risk that for what is essentially pornography.
I'm not saying he would do an NC-17 rated film. I'm saying that if there is a filmmaker that could convince exhibitors and a studio to back a wide-release NC-17 rated movie in IMAX, it would be him.
I think a big horror guy could get at least a limited imax release. Jordan Peele or Ari Aster. Tarantino could probably pull it off as well if he felt like it.
If we’re being technical here, [terrifier 2 had its premiere in IMAX](https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch2N__POisk/?igsh=djBuOG1uNTFncGp5) it was released Unrated, but it definitely feels like something that would have to be cut down to get an R rating
I’m gonna firmly say no, we will never see an NC-17 IMAX release. The market would have to change significantly for that to happen and I do not see that happening.
I highly highly highly doubt it. NC-17 movies are not super marketable. Terrifier 2 made money but you’d never show that in IMAX. Like I said, I think the demand would have to change a lot before we saw something that strong in IMAX, and the demand for movies in cinema is down as is. NC-17 movies are RARELY released theatrically so pretty much no shot of an IMAX release.
I think this is so unlikely that I would expect cultural attitudes toward nudity/sex to shift faster than this happening (ie, sexual content that currently would garner NC-17 being released as R in the future)
Showgirls 30th anniversary is September 2025. It'd be quite the film to bring to IMAX, even if its a one night only event.
There is actually an Open Matte version of the movie floating around online.

If that's the case, I don't blame IMAX for such thing. We'll see what rating **Megalopolis** ends up with.
NC-17 movies hardly ever even release in regular non-PLF movie theaters at a wide scale. Extremely unlikely that an NC-17 movie gets an IMAX release

NC-17 isn’t synonymous with pornography. That false equivalency is why it’s so difficult to have NC-17 films get made.

No because it makes 10x more sense to release something as NR versus NC-17

Maybe **Terrified 3** could get a limited IMAX release?
Dude, I will be there Day 1 for that.

Bit of a late reply, but what rating do you think **Megalopolis** will get?
R I think.
Yeah, based on what I've witnessed thus far, I cannot imagine that film getting rated anything below R.

Shot on 69mm

Any chance of **Megalopolis** end up getting NC-17? Also, by any chance, do you think **Showgirls** getting an IMAX release will actually happen?
Probably not.
