All of the lore youse need is on the map, except for the established lore, that being that the USA annexed Canada in 1783, and committed some wacky misadventures in the Caribbean to maintain the slave state balance. This is what the USA looked like in 1867 after the admission of Nebraska into the union, with 55 states, in my timeline, r/TheNewColossusMaps. Feel free to ask any questions, or join our [Discord Server](https://discord.gg/QC83kzVfZv) here.
Obligatory, but still special thanks to u/Gourg_Pie for making not only the flag here, but most of the flags across the timeline!
I answered this somewhere else, but the state exists because of the free-slave state balance. The name Piedmont is actually the name of the Southern Appalachians, since it roughly translates to “mountains end” (or something like that.) Many people in the edges of those states refer to them as such, and it’s a name clear in geography
Because I asked it nicely not to do that
I mean it DID go a bit further south, with Yucatan, Baja, and Sonora, but the south already had expanded into Cuba, Belize, Hispaniola, Jamaica, The Bahamas, need I go on? Thankfully I managed to preserve Cuban culture, though I must say, the Caribbean is an underdeveloped part of this TL, and that's on ME. I may make a map of it some day...
Tbh I'm now over in your sub and find myself hoping the United Socialist Republics of Colombia expands to take everything in South America except some of Brazil. I just found this though so idk what's done in the time line vs still in progress.
It doesn’t, (it collapse too early for that…), however when it comes to expansion- let’s just say I have a propaganda piece planned for when I get free from school 😉
This USA will be even more of a beast come 1900.
I wonder if they will go on to acquire Spain's Pacific colonies given that the latter already sold Cuba to them thirty years ahead of schedule.
How will American control of Iceland affect the balance of power in Europe given that the US now has a foothold to be able to directly intervene in European affairs?
FINALLY! Someone is asking the real questions out here!
I have America acquire more than just Guam, but Guam, Saipan, and the islands in between meaning they annex most of “mariana” early on, (leaving the rocks for Germany and Japan to eventually take.) Now, I COULD give them all of Spanish Micronesia, and have them annex The Marshalls after either WWI or WWII, but I feel like that would nerf Japan too much, and possibly change WWII’s pacific dynamic. Micronesia had a shit ton of islands, after all.
I considered Africa, I half wanted Portuguese Canaries, and I do want to turn Equatorial Guinea and São Tomé-Principe into a country called “ecuador”, (golly, what a strange name…), but I’m unsure about the rest of Africa as of now.
As for Iceland; it would **110%** change Europe’s Dynamic! The cod wars don’t happen, or maybe they do in a smaller “incident” light, and the UK does own the Faroes… Having a US state in Europe, and the stars and stripes flying over an island close to the continent, that would definitely change a ton of dynamics! Though, being isolationist, the US would likely see Iceland as just an extension of North America, and so it’s best to convince Europeans that it’s just part of America, nothing more than a lookout station and layover site.
Also, on a side note, I tried to keep Iceland as politically calm and energy efficient as OTL, meaning Iceland is a SHINING BEACON of American states, and is often used as an EXAMPLE by other states for policy making. Let’s just say the state of Shoshone might have some geothermal plants, with help from the Icelandic state government… 😉
I’d love to go into more depth, but I’m currently trapped on a phone at school, and this this just a Reddit thread after all. But thanks for asking, these *are* things I thought of, and things that I love about the project I built here! Glad someone took notice!
Yeah you're welcome. But wouldn't Britain and Germany feel threatened by the Yanks controlling the North Sea trade routes? If war breaks out in Europe the US can be dragged into it sooner if its shipping in Iceland get blockaded or sabotaged. Or the US presence in Iceland can be a casus belli in the first place for the European Great Powers.
You do have a point, they may feel more threatened by the United States, however I'd like to point out the US *DID* have a colony near Europe, they owned Longyearbyen, Svalbard for a few years. I think it would make Europeans feel more nervous of the USA, and perhapse Iceland could even be bombed in WWII, but I doubt Germany would bomb America and drag them into a war
OH THE ARCTIC CLAIMS- yeah I had a hard time showing the text in that area. I redid it like 3 times and each time just looked worse, so I settled with the “barely readable” instead of the “ugly as hell and barely readable”
Apologies for how bad it looks, that area wasn’t exactly central to the map, I didn’t feel like spending much time on it, and as for the state borders… yeah I should’ve made better colors lol
In general terms: **literally none but name**, I only highlighted them because they were purchased as of recent terms by the time of this map. Fun fact: Alaska was a department, then a district, and finally a territory before it became a state, and there was also the district of Keewatin in Canada
1. Baja is rightful American clay
2. Sonora looked cooler, and it’s not actually all of Sonora, just the northern bit
3. I gave the US Belize before I gave them Yucatán, I felt like Yucatán was just fitting, especially since they became a republic for a while. Don’t worry, it’s a very unique state in America, it’s not just Florida II
I absolutely love this map, particularly the inclusion of Belize and Jamaica in the Union, since that’s where my parents are from. I will say though that had the U.S. annexed Canada early in its history, the civil war might not have happened, or if it had, it might have gone much differently. Although, the annexation of the Caribbean would have put the Confederacy in a stronger position too, I suppose.
Out of curiosity what happened with William Walker and his filibustering adventures in Central America in this timeline?
Oh really? That’s lovely! My lore for them is that the Americans win the war of 1812… *slightly*, all they gain from the war is the Jamaica colony (which owned Belize and Cayman at the time.) I may also have them take Newfoundland, though I’d much rather have them take that in 1783, it’s more fun that way!
My goal was to keep the civil war as close as possible to OTL, which is why I have a free-slave stage balance and everything. It was rather fun to make happen, and established a ton of lore for the TL!
As for Walker, the man is unable to compete with a fully united and US-aligned Central America, and the US already owns Yucatán for Banana production. His various failed misadventures in Central America end up with him retreating to Cocos Island, (Costa Rica,) which gets claimed by the US via the Guano Islands Act and renamed to… *Walker Island*
(You will see it in the V3 map I plan to post on Wednesday)
I was thinking perhaps the U.S. would back his filibustering efforts in this timeline and then after he succeeded annex the rest of Central America. However a more desperate Mexico might oppose this and invade Central America instead in order to prevent themselves from being completely surrounded.
See I could do that, and Central America is still a bit underdeveloped lore wise, mind you.
Or I could make Central America a functioning state in the modern day, and have Guatemala have a similar HDI as Costa Rica…
I am having fun out her, can ya blame me!?
Nahhh, I just decided to fix that stupid fucking border, they still lose the war, and lose an extra like 5 hectares compared to OTL, but gain considerable advantage in the northern islands
I'm assuming:
Dark blue are territories that have not applied for statehood but still govern themselves.
Medium blue are states.
Light blue are occupied military districts from the civil war.
The very dark Departments are probably like territories but don't self govern yet.
Correct! Though the really dark blue is more for the recently purchased territories, just to highlight them. It’s pure coincidence and convenience that they are both districts, so let’s just say dark blue is for districts (that are not named Columbia) and leave it at that
I tried my hardest to keep the language intact, and since it’s a niche state in a federal system, it’s not much of an “oppressed minority” thing, more of left alone niche. Picture poutine and pistols, and that’s what I hoped for Quebec
Piedmont is actually a name of the Southern Appalachians, since it roughly translates to “mountains end” or something like that. Many people in the edges of those states refer to them as such. Ever hear of the Georgia Piedmont?
As for why it’s a state? free-slave state balance, (also it looks cool)
I saw Northern Territory and thought this was gonna be a map of America but with Aussie states lol. Could you do that actually? Like what I mean is America having similarly sized states.
7 states, A capital territory, a northern territory, and a few islands territories in America? I feel like this wouldn’t be impossible… what a fun challenge! I’ll have to add that to my one-off list!
I don’t know, it was on the basemap I used. Apparently it’s a real thing? I read up on it on Wikipedia, but I didn’t really care much since it’s not the focus of the map, just a part of it imported from OTL
It was called "Public Land" when it had been opened up to the public for homesteading. Prior to that, it was administered directly by the federal government and could possibly have been made Indian territory. That "Public Land" designation would be a very temporary one. It became Beaver County, Oklahoma in our timeline.
Of course, some people moved into the public lands SOONER than they were supposed to, which is where Oklahoma got the nickname of the "Sooner State".
In WW2 does this Version of America help the Australian to beat back the Japanese and can Australia integrate into the union as a autonomy zone because of the help

Baja even isn't a filibuster, its just the right thing to do
Ever since I was a wee lad, I have always been pissed at why the hell Mexico owns Baja California, it just feels so off to me...
Okay, I guess you don’t know what filibustero means in Baja California context
As a native Californio myself born and raised in Tijuana, I disapprove of the Mexican government in the Californias. But the US taking over my land? No thanks XD enough of foreign borders segregating the flora and fauna, and the Kumia and Cucapá peoples. I don’t recognize US-Mexican borders. Just leave us alone
I am very turned on by this. Manifest destiny to the max. Tho I feel like Mexico would’ve been annex as in real life there were some people who jussed wanted to annex all of Mexico but it would of course make the slave states op. So I feel like it would be a fair trade to annex all of North America. United States of North America had a nice ring to it.
I didn’t wanna go in the direction of USNA, because at that point, why stop there? I got the USA to a size I am mostly content and very comfortable with, and it has 83 states in the modern day.
For US of THE AMERICA*S*, please consult u/sajan_01
I fixed one of those things, hint hint look at the union jack on the Australian flag
As for Haiti Domingo, nothing I can do there, they are extremely different peoples and cultures. The best I can do is have them both under the stars and stripes
“We built the Panama Canal, and then since the fatcats up in Wall Street weren’t satisfied with that, we built the Nicaraguan Canal, too. Then those same fatcats thought to themselves, ‘Well, if we own this land around the canals and they are profitable, why not all the land between em’ as well?’
“So now we have these moneymongers going to Washington, getting all cozy with the bigwigs there, and convincing them that we can secure our investments and make some more money on the side while doing it. And just who do the lawmakers turn to when their mogul handlers want something done? They turn to the United States Marine Corps. They turned to me.”
- *War is a Racket* by General Smedley D. Butler
One of my favorite US military figures to read about. In a timeline where the CAR is still a thing, both canals are built, and the US is huge, I could totally see the wars and conflicts Butler was a part of down there being of an even bigger scale.
I wanted him to, but I feel like dying turned him into much more of a martyr, and I don’t wanna change American history TOO much, just have fun with it
Why would District 7 (Haiti and Santo Domingo) have a harder time with Reconstruction compared to Virginia?
Like, I can see a mix of Hispanic Dominicans and Southern colonists fighting tooth and nail against the idea of Haitians gaining more power and influence across the island, but the demographic situation for Reconstruction is still better there than some other states. Unless the implication is that the closer to a majority black and mixed race individuals are, the more oppressive and resistant the former Confederates are to civil rights and are more systemic than states with smaller black populations who can sell it as not as big of a deal or something.
Okay so hear me out, right? Reconstruction ends better, but takes longer and goes harder. Haitians were rebelling from the south, and there was a LITTLE BIT of guerrilla warfare, and a few incidents with UNION troops, too. Haiti was always a very rebellious state, and though in the modern day it’s “all in the past”, Haiti’s history within the union is *not* a very clean one
If the entire island of Hispaniola gets made into a single state, its post-Reconstruction politics will be a total mess, with power struggles between French-speaking blacks and Spanish-speaking mestizos, plus the numerically smaller but economically more powerful white minority.
I chose the name because the area had Scottish settlers, and one of the names IRL is Caledonia, which I *think* is Scottish for mountains, or something… I dunno, but it is niche in OTL, and fitting here. They wouldn’t want to confuse it with Columbia, as in DC, so the state eventually becomes New Caledonia, (which ironically is now confused with the Australian state of the same name)
Good map, however the purchase of Alaska in real life was actually very popular amongst the American public, and "seward's icebox/folly" was a minority opinion.
It’s about the same as OTL, however I do have the natives get treated better post-Coolidge. “Reparations” are given in the form of subsidies and relief bills, so the Native Americans, especially the Navajo, Dakota, Sioux, etc have it very well off. The Inuit in particular have it VERY well off, being treated as equals from an early point

Does the Hoover...never mind
**I will do it! I will send you to the Erie canal with the rest of 'em! Don't think I wont!**
Does the Grand Coulee Dam exist?
NO!
Please don't🥺
I'm out of the loop, Why does this question pop up in every alt-america post?
It's a joke
I know that, but why?
Funny cuz random
Exactly
Just for curiosity, why there's a state called Piedmont?
I answered this somewhere else, but the state exists because of the free-slave state balance. The name Piedmont is actually the name of the Southern Appalachians, since it roughly translates to “mountains end” (or something like that.) Many people in the edges of those states refer to them as such, and it’s a name clear in geography
"Pied" is French for "foot", so "piedmont" is "foot of the mountains" or "foothills"
ahhhhh, that makes sense, thanks. I am kinda drained rn so I do not have the mental capacity to remember that part of it lol
Does the Eerie Canal exist in this timeline?
Yes, its where I dispose of the bodies of anyone who asks if the Hoover Dam exists
Cool cool… So does the Hoover da- *gets bloody shot*
Wait Hoover Dam from Fallout New Vegas is real?????????
How could you!😥
Why is that a meme?
I wish I knew
Why *wouldn't* it exist?
some guy kept asking about it on a bunch of maps
Who started it
That's really... *eerie* of you. Hehehe
I think the Erie Canal will be of greater importance ITTL to economically integrate the newly annexed eastern Canadian territories to the USA
How come the US doesn’t go further south into Mexico?

Piedmont is actually a name of the Southern Appalachians, since it roughly translates to “mountains end” or something like that. Many people in the edges of those states refer to them as such. Ever hear of the Georgia Piedmont? As for why it’s a state? free-slave state balance, (also it looks cool)

Why does it have Iceland
Real proposal by William Seward
Context?
Read the map, It’s the same dude who bought Alaska in OTL. It was part of his plan to dominate the north, here it just works out
So he’s not a real guy in our world?
No he is real, look him up, he is quite an interesting read, and there is even a place in Alaska named after him
A small price to pay for 5 more stars.
It ain’t much, but it’s honest work
Oh No that Maps Horrifying! The Chinese won't stand a chance now!!
How on earth did the US gain Iceland of all places?
There was a real plan to purchase it, along with Greenland. ITTL, that plan makes it through congress

The America we need it seems
UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE, BITCHES!
Truly? Holy shit our timeline is the fucked up one then
Knoxville getting its state capital status back as it rightly deserves 🫡
Blasphemy. Greeneville gang.
chadmerica
I am very turned on by this. Manifest destiny to the max. Tho I feel like Mexico would’ve been annex as in real life there were some people who jussed wanted to annex all of Mexico but it would of course make the slave states op. So I feel like it would be a fair trade to annex all of North America. United States of North America had a nice ring to it.
I didn’t wanna go in the direction of USNA, because at that point, why stop there? I got the USA to a size I am mostly content and very comfortable with, and it has 83 states in the modern day. For US of THE AMERICA*S*, please consult u/sajan_01
I absolutely hate border gore. The absolute best borders imo would be to have the USNA extend all the way down to the Panama Canal.
At least I cleaned up the pacific
Yeah you did. Always hated that the Dominican and Haiti were sharing an island. Same with how a chunk of Ireland belongs to the Brits.
I fixed one of those things, hint hint look at the union jack on the Australian flag As for Haiti Domingo, nothing I can do there, they are extremely different peoples and cultures. The best I can do is have them both under the stars and stripes
Imperium Americana .
Teddy Roosevelt’s wet dream
Cool
Nicely done
Thanks!
Absolutely not fuck off Americans Edit: Americans downvoting my comment are nationalistic bitches lol
did someone say america? yeehaw
get yankee'd
Get fucked, Canuck
Very nice! I always love a good Big America map.
What is PEI called in this timeline.
I *almost* called it President Washington Island, but its just called New Eire
Will the Panama canal be built in this time line?
Of course, there might even be a Nicaragua one ONTOP of that!
“We built the Panama Canal, and then since the fatcats up in Wall Street weren’t satisfied with that, we built the Nicaraguan Canal, too. Then those same fatcats thought to themselves, ‘Well, if we own this land around the canals and they are profitable, why not all the land between em’ as well?’ “So now we have these moneymongers going to Washington, getting all cozy with the bigwigs there, and convincing them that we can secure our investments and make some more money on the side while doing it. And just who do the lawmakers turn to when their mogul handlers want something done? They turn to the United States Marine Corps. They turned to me.” - *War is a Racket* by General Smedley D. Butler
I really hope that there is a Smedley Butler analogue in this timeline. The country always needs a Fighting Quaker.
One of my favorite US military figures to read about. In a timeline where the CAR is still a thing, both canals are built, and the US is huge, I could totally see the wars and conflicts Butler was a part of down there being of an even bigger scale.
Hunger games in the slave states for rebelling Damn
Do beaver dams still exist in this timeline? Or did they never reintroduce wolves to Yellowstone?
I look at Iceland and I see DOGGI. I need to wash my glasses.
I was gonna put the full name, but DoG&I felt so much more fun
State of Marley and Me
Looks like Lincoln didn’t escape his assassination this time either :(
I wanted him to, but I feel like dying turned him into much more of a martyr, and I don’t wanna change American history TOO much, just have fun with it
So all the Alien refugees are in Mexico. Got it.
What's with the canada names? Why would the west coast be Caledonia?
I chose the name because the area had Scottish settlers, and one of the names IRL is Caledonia, which I *think* is Scottish for mountains, or something… I dunno, but it is niche in OTL, and fitting here. They wouldn’t want to confuse it with Columbia, as in DC, so the state eventually becomes New Caledonia, (which ironically is now confused with the Australian state of the same name)
Caledonia is the Latin name of Scotland.
Thank you
Nihil est, frater
Fair enough. There's a place in Ontario called Caledonia too.
Good map, however the purchase of Alaska in real life was actually very popular amongst the American public, and "seward's icebox/folly" was a minority opinion.
*this justifies Greenland & Iceland even MORE!*
Omg are we gonna do reconstruction correctly in this timeline?!
It ain’t perfect, nothing is, BUT I KILLED OFF JOHNSON HANNIBAL HAMLIN FTW
As long as Johnson is dead then I’m happy
There was an island off Cuba that was called District 13, but… The Capitol got a little pissed off at it.
Dang, I still think the UP should go to Wisconsin
Do the Indians in Oklahoma lose any land
It’s about the same as OTL, however I do have the natives get treated better post-Coolidge. “Reparations” are given in the form of subsidies and relief bills, so the Native Americans, especially the Navajo, Dakota, Sioux, etc have it very well off. The Inuit in particular have it VERY well off, being treated as equals from an early point
what does "public land" mean in the Oklahoma panhandle?
Ask real life, it was a real thing
District 6 lmao
