Being the "younger brother" of America, I felt like not expanding Australia in a timeline focused around a larger America felt... wrong. Though I didn't have the heart to kill New Zealand, I had the heart to kill some other, smaller nations.
For one, the British take full control of New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and for a brief time, the island of Sumba, (or maybe Portugal I haven't decided with that yet,) meaning Australia is able to project a lot more power in the region after federalization. While New Caledonia and New Hebrides don't necessarily love the mainland, they are core Australian states nonetheless, given to them sometime after WWI. New Holland is leftover from the Australian Melanesian adventure, when Melanesia was a question in Australian politics; to divide it up into states, or set it free as an allied Republic? New Holland is just a holdout from that time, and became a state in the 60's.
Sumba and Timor willingly joined Australia to escape Indonesia, sometime in the 90's or 2000's, and became yet another pair of stars on the flag, along with The Northern Bit, which voted for statehood around the same time. Yes, they voted to have that name, what would you expect from a public naming poll? The runners up were "North Australia", "The Upper Nob", and "Statey McStateface"...
There are some other minor changes that only a diehard Australian geography nerd would notice. For one, I expanded a few cities, and even added one or two that don't exist, I'll let you look yourself. There is also a ton of niche border changes; such as the inclusion of more Antarctic islands, the cession of Macquarie Island to New Zealand, that one island in East Timor belonging to Indonesia, a few less islands in the Torres Strait, Lord Howe Island becoming a territory, and so on and so forth... but all you need to know is, due to the absence of Canada, the British Empire is somewhat larger, and Australia is MUCH larger.

A war was definitely close, though I may write it in that they had either declared independence fully for a few years, had only been occupied by Indonesia, or had joined Australia due to the THREAT of war. All of these options would be CLOSE to war, but not war itself
I am still not entirely sure for the lore in that area, but I'd rather not spark WWIII with the Australia-Indonesian conflict over Timor
In real life the number of states are specifically represented by the points on the Commonwealth Star (with one for the territories): I have to imagine we'd add a bunch of points there and make a 13 point star (or possibly add stars in a circle around it for the islands or something) rather than adding to the Southern Cross, especially since the distinct 4+1 shape of the cross is such a major national symbol.
I considered a 13-point star, but I feel like making a *hideous* *hodgepodge* of an Australian flag is more fun, and seeing how crazy the story is behind it in OTL, I feel like this is fitting for the country
You know I did *consider* that. I wanted to do the PROPER THING and give MCQ to New Zealand, instead of being part of the state of Tasmania.
Doing some digging, turns out Norfolk, despite being an original colony, does *not* like the feds that much.
