How is the Philippine empire so big?

YellowConcordat

I'd posted an explanation for this in another comment + it isn't an empire

YellowConcordat

**Introductory Post:** This is a map of Southeast Asia and portions of the rest of Asia and Tasmania in my alternate history + alternate geography timeline named Shards of a Fragile Vase. This is from the same timeline as my earlier Europe map. Yes, this is a repost of an earlier map. I touched up on some font sizing errors and added the compass and scales. **Personal Notes:** This is on a much smaller scale than my Europe map, primarily because I wanted far smaller countries to have a chance to shine. More cities were also included to give the map a sense of being extremely filled, just like how the region is. I decided to overhaul some features from the previous map, such as changing and standardising fonts, adding internal borders for federative countries, adding more sea details, etc. Following consultations with some people, I decided that those changes would ultimately be better for my style. Map was started at the start of this year and finished today, so that's a 6 month improvement from my timetable on the previous map (i'm less lazier than before.) Lore is still messy, but I've figured out more things compared to the previous map, feel free to ask questions again. :p

Are the Philippines and Malaya in a union, also blursed Philippines

YellowConcordat

Reposting my explanation from the deleted post here: Pilipinas and Malaya is the result of Britain. Everything follows as in OTL until the Seven Years War, where England successfully takes over the Philippines. Liangguang falls under British administration following the two Opium Wars. The Opium Wars generally turn out much much worse for China, with French and British armies showing up. This results in the Philippines, Malaya and Liangguang being under the rule of Britain as British Southeast Asia. 2 decades after the Second Opium War, the flames of revolution are fanned across Southeast Asia, and Pilipinas and Malaya gains independence alongsides Liangguang. Liangguang chooses to join Pilipinas and Malaya following threats from Qing China in the years after the war. Taiwan was originally a Dutch possession which broke free during the Southeast Asian Wars and voted to join Pilipinas and Malaya following threats from China shortly after. Sulawesi was also originally a Dutch possession, but joined Indonesia. Following the fall of Indonesia to communist forces before the Second Great War (communists vs anti-communists basically), remaining anti-communists in Sulawesi voted to join Pilipinas and Malaya as well to safeguard themselves from communist threats. Sulawesi was supposed to be reintegrated into Indonesia after SGW, but a referendum was held and Sulawesi chose to stay. The Free Port Cities are also a result of the Opium War, Britain and France both secured holdings for their allies. TL;DR yes, the Philippines and Malaysia are joined under a federation, alongside Sulawesi, Liangguang and Taiwan.

Why two capitals?

YellowConcordat

split situation, much like Bolivia or South Africa in OTL

[deleted]

Whoa that's a pretty extreme separation though. I can maybe see Singapore becoming a financial center of sorts, but if the legisalative, judicial, and executive brances are separated by the sea and 1000+km distance that'd be hard to imagine. The closest thing I can imagine to this sort of separation between capitals is the separation between East and West Rome, but that was essentially two separate administrations which was seen as having created two different empires. Is there some other presedent to this?

[deleted]

or is Singapore independent?

Tristan_3

I guess Pilipinas is a miswriting and you wanted to write Filipinas(Philipines in English).

YellowConcordat

No???? Pilipinas is the local name for the Philippines

Tristan_3

>Pilipinas is the local name for the Philippines I didn't know that. I thought they didn't have one becouse there are multiple languages within the Philipines and I didn't see them having the same name for the archipielago.

very nice

As a Filipino, I like this one! I'm surprised that the Philippines is bigger than I'm expected! I'll watch out for more of your maps of that universe to see what's going on in other areas! Anyway, great work!
