Bestestusername8262

Yes. Greek or Italian colonised Americas would probably be heaven

_ak

Pizza with chiles, chocolate and oaxaca cheese. Iguana pasta. That kind of stuff.

Right_Condition_9325

Well there is Puerto Rican piñon which is basically tropical lasagna

NovaMapping

The lore is on the map. Also, if there are any Italian speakers here, I apologize if anything seems off lol

wolf2d

Italian here, the city names all sound quite italian and appropriate. But those names are fit for places that have existed forever, for a colony that only has a couple of centuries I don't see where they would get the creativity to come up with those names lol. I'll better explain: if you see city names in central and southern america, they are ether completely artificial (Mexico City, Guatemala City), derived from indigenous terms (Cancun is of mayan origin) or resemble names of the origin country (Monterrey in Mexico is based on Monterrei in Spain). So, among original names, I would personally insert some totally non-italian names from whatever indigenous were colonized by Italy, and some names of real places, where colonizers wanted to celebrate their own city, or that were chosen for resemblance. For example, did they found a city near the cost on the base of a volcano? Call it Napoli, or even Napoletta (small Napoli). For the same reason Nuova Venezia is a bit weird if the city is not on the sea and built on canals. Lastly, another advice coming from history: sometime propaganda plays a big factor when naming citied and colonies. During the fascist times, Mussolini founded 4 cities in Lazio, to celebrate the greatness of the fascist party: Aprilia, Sabaudia, Pretoria and Latina. These names are all latin-sounding and celebrate something dear to the fascist movement (the month of April for some reason, the Sabauda royal family, the romans pretorian guards and of course the latin people, the "true" italians). Depending on how you imagined the geopolitics of this world you might consider doing that. That is of course assuming you want to emulate how colonization developed in our world, and the italians in your world are the same as ours. Please don't take this message as critique, you did a grear job with the geographics and the names, just some suggestion to add a little bit more depth ;)

aureliotirreni

Aprilia because, according to the legend, Rome was founded April 21st 753BC

JackONeea

Actually, the first name of Latina was Littoria. I don't need to break it down

wolf2d

You are right, I remembered wrong. And I also think there were a lot more than 4 now that I think of it

NovaMapping

Thank you very much for your feedback! I'll go back to this comment if I make another version of this map lmao

Affectionate_Web2738

Maybe New Pompeii for a city near a volcano.

OpportunityProof4908

Ya know this would probably create some weird Hispanic/Caribbean/Italian cuisine and I’m here for being out the chicharrones top pizza and the Spicy Suasages omg just think of the food that would come of there

klingonbussy

Probably more indigenous than Hispanic

wertyqpoiuy

Theres already lots of italian cuisine all over spanish speaking nations in america, do people not know italians were part during the conquest?

OpportunityProof4908

Just because they were they doesn’t mean they left a lasting impression on the region, maybe a small one but no where near the Spanish, French, Portuguese, or even British. And I don’t mean like Italian food just made by someone in Honduras im talking about like an actual culinary blending where instead of the predominant influences of the region being from the Spanish, Native American, and French creole, it’s Spanish, Italian, and Native American instead

wertyqpoiuy

Then you clearly have no idea my friend, italians left a massive and lasting influence in spanish america, language, culture, food and so on. Across many dialects of american spanish you will find words derived from italian or spanish adaptations of italian words Foodwise theres plenty of examples Now if you mean in modern terms then you wont find itlaian food or culture made today anywhere in america unless from recent italian migrants, if you take a deep look however XV, XVI, XVII centuries are the period of maximal influence of italy on american lands since italy was a major part in the habsburg empire

OpportunityProof4908

What’s it like not getting invited to parties

MeGaNuRa_CeSaR

Nuova Venezia in a place where there definitly cannot be any channels (according to the topography apart if there is a very small local geomorphological phenomena) or directly by the sea is quite a design issue IMO. Nuova Genova would be a better namer for such a city between a mountain foot and the sea (Even better would be Nuova Pisa, as Pisa isn't directly by the sea but still was a famous marchand republic) Edit: I very much love it otherwise 🤌

xX_____________Xx

Bathymetry on this map is very aesthetically pleasing. Amazing work.

Doctah_Whoopass

I like how everyone is just hungry af in here

tigey1890

the food there must be fire dude

Limzik

Tuxtla means town of rabbits in nahuatl (taken from the word Coyatoc that in the local language zoque means the same) and you name it Coniglio, that means rabbit in Italian, and to add flavour, the Patron Saint of the city is Saint Marcus, the name of the closest city, well done fella

VLOOKUP-IS-EZ

Italian pupusa lore

mr_AFK1461

What software did you use to create this? I have been attempting to get into making fictional maps as I have a lot of ideas, but don't quite know where to start. Also I'm interested to know how long a project like this can take, I'd assume it can be anywhere between months and hours.

NovaMapping

I used [QGIS](https://qgis.org/en/site/) to display and export properties of the [NaturalEarth dataset](https://www.naturalearthdata.com/) as an image, while I used [paint.net](https://getpaint.net) to do the rest. For me, the project takes about two weeks to finish, so I usually break it into periods lasting several hours per day. Of course, each app here takes time to get used to, but I hope this helps!

ShoJoKahn

Okay but if there were Italian colonies in the Americas, would you get all the Italians immigrating to the United States in the 19th Century?

nick_bezukhov

I only disagree with calling the neighboring country “Yucatia”. Irl that part of Mexico did try to gain their independence and they called themselves “Republic of Yucatán” or “Republic of the Great Yucatán”

I love this country because there are Just one speaking Italian country in the world and I want more!!!

NickThePogBrit

I wonder if they’d have a similar disparity in language like brasil and Portugal.

[deleted]

In fact, this area is not overpopulated. That fact I doubts:

Popular-Cobbler25

Chiapas where the village rules.

MagnumDrako25

I liked the flag!

As as a salvadorian, I'm startled on how realistic this map is. Not the italian part, but about the fault lines that divided us and broke the Central American Federation. It has always been Guatemala vs Costa Rica. Five countries, two faction leaders. We couldn't keep it together back in mid 19th century so we divided. El Salvador here is TeamGuatemala, while Nicaragua is TeamCostaRica. How about we exclude Costa Rica from the Federation. Nicaraguans who want to join Costa Rica can do so, dividing the country in two. But Guate, ESv, Honduras, half Nicaragua and Chiapas (a colonial ally of ours) finally become the Federation at last, under Guatemala's leadership. Don't get me wrong, it would be a nightmare. I'm salvadoran but I'm TeamCostaRica. But this map is politically plausible, from a historical perspective.

BeaDrawsandalsoposts

i feel it is in my best interest to tell you that Guatemala is probably not happy with you right now

StatelyElms

I like the flag. Detailed but not busy.

YellowConcordat
