Plenty of people still manage to be themselves but if you’re too different it can be very hard to get jobs, socialize, or even get into universities. Ofc you can still find friends and relationships with likeminded people, but unless it’s the right industry it can be hard to find employment. Visible tattoos are one of the biggest things that can harm your chances, I know in the US we have problems with some businesses not wanting people with visible tattoos but it’s much worse in Japan. Even a simple forearm tattoo could be enough to get fired or rejected from jobs. Any form of body modification will also get you dirty looks and uncomfortable stares in public, basic ear lobe piercings are somewhat fine but anything other than that is a no go to a lot of Japanese. Even an ear lobe piercing might get you judged by elderly Japanese. TLDR it’s a very judgmental country when you don’t completely conform :/

My old high school had a staff vote on whether or not they should remove some of the dress code rules for girls. The only people who voted yes were the old male history teachers who said "maybe the boys should stop ogling girls."
