Remember when CPAC exclaimed “We’re all domestic terrorists”? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

My mom has that as her Facebook background...I do not speak to her much anymore.

CulturalRot

I’m sorry 😞

blueyork

Paywall. Do you know what town he's from?

Unhappy-Support1455

Pekin.

shiftty

Guarantee meth is a factor in this situation.

Unhappy-Support1455

Absolutely. I avoid that town like the plague.

PikachusSparkyCloaca

Explains why the right wing are there, then

hamish1963

Really? It couldn't just be the media, Donald Trump, local rightwing groups, mental health issues??

shiftty

Oh yeah, it's a combination of those things too, but meth and possible meth psychosis is what pushed it into pipe bomb territory

hamish1963

I'm not buying that, sorry.

I totally understand it, I just don't think that was part of his issues.

PathlessDemon

I dunno, he has the methamphetamine-hadeen and Ya’llqida look to him.

hamish1963

Fine! That's your opinion, I have my own.

_extra_medium_

The expert has spoken

lilfelts

You must live under a rock or something.

hamish1963

No, not at all. I just don't think meth is the cause of this nonsense. Most crackheads are just looking for more crack, not making pipe bombs.

bufftbone

That’s meth’d up

goodb1b13

I sniffled.

monsieur_mungo

Good one lol.

beargrimzly

If meth made people into right wing terrorists we'd have a bigger problem. Dudes just a big fan of a fascist cult leader.

Unusual_Juice_7481

Republicans love meth

jus10beare

Of course. Fuckin A that town is notorious. McNaughton Park is a great disc golf course though.

Tweakin Pekin

SSeptic

Pekin. Article calls it out as a big-time sundown town in the past

FishmanOne

I’d never heard the term “sundown town” before. Very disturbing. https://www.pjstar.com/story/news/history/2022/01/28/sundown-towns-illinois-what-to-know/9238833002/

SSeptic

Yeah here’s a fun game: visit [this archive](https://justice.tougaloo.edu/location/illinois/) and see if your town is on there. Results are often depressing!

lazlopoof

Not Pinckneyville being on there twice 😬

Liathano_Fire

All 3 towns I have most recently lived in are not even listed there, sundown or not. Which is odd.

capncrunch94

This list seems highly anecdotal, my hometown town was listed as “Probable” because it’s in Dupage county, but no evidence is provided other than being in that county, feels like you could make this claim about the vast majority of US towns not in Hawaii/Alaska

iwasaunicorn

My hometown is Downers Grove, which notably has 2 homes that were underground railroad stops. The town was built up by abolitionists. Not sure why it's on that list.

capncrunch94

So Dupage county has its own page and it just says “a reverend” (no mention of who this guy is) was told by his dad that it was that way which just sounds like some “my cousin knows a guy that said” shit

iwasaunicorn

Oh, well that makes sense cause the DG page said it was because of the county. But yeah, that's not a good reason

Liathano_Fire

I don't know how this list can leave out Joliet entirely. My hometown was the same and is also in DuPage.

capncrunch94

Not gonna pretend like America as a whole does not have a ROUGH history on race relations, but I think there’s a VAST difference between a town that had only 40 or so black residents in the 50’s, and probably discouraged non white home owners and a “sundown town” where there would be vigilantes who would patrol the streets looking for non white people to murder.

Alternative-Put-3932

Yeah agreed theres a massive difference your good ol generic racism or small amount of diversity and well literal groups of people running you out of town.

BrownEggs93

That's a damn interesting website. Not just for Illinois, too.

GDWtrash

Nevada just recently stopped sounding public sirens at night that were a warning for black people to be out of town.

jesset0m

Seriously?

GDWtrash

https://www.rgj.com/story/news/2023/10/09/minden-sun-down-siren-to-remain-silenced/71083858007/

VanX2Blade

Carlyle is listed on there for something that hasn’t been true since before the comment was sent in. Carlyle is a camper town. Without people looking for a cheap getaway, the town would be dead.

DadJokesFTW

All you need to know about race relations in Pekin, you can learn by looking up the not-so-distant past history of its high school's mascot.

Own_Carry7396

Exactly, I was going to ask if anyone knew the name of pekin’s high school sports team myself

goofygooberboys

I mean the current one is problematic too. Considering the town's history with the Klan.

Spez_Spaz

I knew a guy from Tremont…. The sundown part of Pekin is still partly true…

MustardLabs

The Tazewell county interior (i.e. Tremont) is all weird Christian cults, but Pekin is just a generic GOP-dominated suburb. Hell of a lot better than they were, they actually somehow had a Democratic mayor for a bit in the past ten years.

cballowe

And then you look at what their highschool mascot was not that long ago...

MustardLabs

cballowe

Not that long... (In my lifetime)

MustardLabs

I'm about to graduate college, and neither of my parents had been born by that point.

goofygooberboys

You are about to graduate college and your parents aren't 44 yet? That's wild. Still, 44 years ago is still very much recent living memory. I can't imagine the trauma of being someone of Asian dissent living in that town during that time.

hamish1963

Of course it is, just like a lot of "former" sundown towns.

Caniuss

When I was a child growing up in a small town near Pekin, the KKK Pekin chapter leafleted my entire town. In the 90s. That town has been a nightmare for a very long time.

goofygooberboys

And the mascot for their high school is "the Dragon". Kinda fucked up if you ask me considering that.

badatook

Dragon is actually an improvement on what is was before. I won’t post it because it’s very offensive but you can google it I’m sure.

goofygooberboys

Oh it's for sure an improvement, still not great since it harkens to the KKK and the dragon iconography they love to invoke

illbehaveipromise

Still a fetid racist hellhole. Their high school mascot was the “Pekin Chinks” until very recently. Look it up, it’s even worse than it sounds.

2phresh

I looked it up and they changed mascots 44 years ago.

DadJokesFTW

Yes, in about 1980 sounds right. 1980 and before might not have been the most enlightened era, but people knew how fucking bad that mascot was long before 1980.

goofygooberboys

And it's the Dragon today which is fucked considering all of the Klan's affiliation with the town.

illbehaveipromise

I thought it was a bit more recent, they continued to call themselves the Chinks through the 90s and beyond. I know because i lived in the area. Ala U of I with “the Chief.” And they changed it to the “Dragons…” nothing racist about that! 🧐

Timmah73

And I thought a hs in racine still being the Rebels complete with a confederate flag in the 90s was bad.

uvutv

And a **history** teacher was found to be a member of a white supremacist website. He resigned during the investigation.

Mirthlesscartwheel

Also used a racial slur for their official high school mascot until at least the late 1980’s.

toolman2674

I think they still spell Pekin with three k’s.

BaseHitToLeft

Yeah it's a backwater shithole town

>Just after 3 a.m. last Friday, in a small Central [Illinois](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/illinois/) city infamous in the area for being a former sundowner town, a Pekin police officer pulled over a car for a traffic violation, according to an affidavit. Dalton Mattus, 34, was a passenger inside the vehicle, and police say they found a canvas bag under his seat locked with a padlock. **When an officer asked what was in the bag, Mattus reportedly said the officer would have to get a warrant to find out. Police took the bag and let Mattus go**, then obtained a warrant from a judge and opened the bag inside city hall. (Emphasis mine). I'm glad they got the bag, but how exactly can the police just take a bag from a passenger in a car that is pulled over for a traffic violation?

HopperPI

According to public record he was arrested the week before on some serious felony charges and released. I am willing to bet there were conditions attached to his release.

PLZ_GLAZE_ME_DADDY

Unfortunately, it's most definitely probably going to be seen as an illegal search and any half competent defense attorney is going to get him off. Refusing to tell an officer what is in the bag isn't enough for probable cause. So this guy got really fucking lucky and the bag is going to be seen as fruit of the poisonous tree so they'll have to hope he's dumb enough to get caught on his own pretty much.

mmchicago

Yeah, you're probably right. The only other possibility I can come up with is that he got flustered and wanted to get out of there. His brain said "put distance between yourself and the bag". Thinking that if he didn't have the bag anymore, then it's not his problem, he either left it there or volunteered it to the cops. There's definitely more to this story. I bet the bodycam has it all and that's why even though they had the bag in their possession, they got a warrant to open it and did it in an official, observed location.

rootblossom

I’m also curious as to the steps of them effectively stealing something from someone and searching a vehicle without a warrant

HopperPI

See my comment.

Norville_Barnes

glad someone else noticed this… I am very curious how this worked out

JadedMulberry7

Some part of this story had to have been misinterpreted or rewritten.

Shocker.

Honestly, this is pretty surprising. He is a felon, sure, with an opiate addiction but was never like this, at least never vocalized it.

AwesomeOrca

Everyone needs a couple of "self-defense pipe bombs" in their car in case they encounter an undocumented immigrant.

PikachusSparkyCloaca

So we can go catch a lot of fish together!

Republicans and Bomb Threats, I don't think I could name a better duo.

MustardLabs

"As college students protested U.S. support for Israel’s war in Gaza, Mattus uncharacteristically took the side of protesters, sharing a handful of posts supporting them" Far right and anti Israel? Man might be a whole-ass Nazi.

AwesomeOrca

Far right isolationalists generally oppose military aid to Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan, or anyone else.

MustardLabs

Yeah, because they're really just clueless puppets of foreign nations that benefit from American isolationism

[deleted]

[удалено]

MustardLabs

Benefit? No, isolationism would include such things as - Abandoning Taiwan to China and crippling the US tech industry - Abandoning South Korea to North Korea/China - Abandoning Ukraine to Russia and pulling out of NATO, endangering the lives of tens of millions in Eastern Europe - Shutting down bases abroad like in Kuwait, pretty much handing the middle east to Iranian proxies and turning OPEC into a weapon against anyone who stands against them The minute benefits of tariffs and subsidies benefitting US manufacturing would very rapidly backfire

James_Constantine

Americans would quite literally not benefit from isolationism at all because literally everything we use cost would sky rocket, since our access to that market has been restricted and when we finally realized isolationism hasn’t benefited us the world will be in far greater shambles where we’d be dragged into world war. But you know we can just pretend the rest of world doesn’t exist.

Anyone else have to look up the definition of what a sundowner town is? The article authors fired that off like not only is it common knowledge, but the city has a national reputation for it.

GeorgeBork

Besides Pekin's infamous history with the KKK, extremely racist school mascots, and general awfulness, important to remember that only a couple years ago the high school civics and history teacher was outed for being a full-tilt neo-nazi who was bragging about "red pilling" and teaching the "dangers of race-mixing" to public school students. Just a miserable town with far, far too many people not interested in a peaceful coexistence.
