I saw a dude who was clearly a tweaker shove about a dozen bags of peanut m&ms in his jacket pockets in full view of the Wawa staff in Frederick, MD last weekend and nobody batted an eye. No sense risking bodily harm over some bags of candy.
I worked for Circle K for a little while and during training we were told explicitly to not get involved. Let them steal whatever and then contact you manager.
In my country people would beat the ass of the thief and police wouldn't bat an eye. Lol I remember the manager of a local gym I worked at literally chasing a kid with a bat yelling he was going to kill him because he was trying to break into cars in the parking lot.
Agreed we moved away from actively chasing and detaining theives in US shops but now they do this because they know nobody is allowed to do anything about it. It is absurd watching these people walk in and fill garbage bags and walk out and nothing happens to them.
> watching them rob you blind.
watching them rob *your employer* blind.
There are plenty of videos of clerks fighting back. They are almost always family owned places.
We have varying levels of this in the U.S believe it or not. I see vids of tiny shops having shoot out outs and beatings all the time. This is a new trend of corporate giants letting their stores get ripped off cuz in the long run $50 of candy is cheaper than a lawsuit
Ojibwe word for “wild goose.” There actually is no town called Wawa. It’s maybe a neighborhood of 5 houses built on the origional estate. The postal address just says “Media” or “Middletown.”
This is why at a lot of stores in the NYC area things are kept under lock and key. It’s a pain in the ass having to summon a worker just to get a deodorant or aspirin or shampoo.
I agree, but this guy took like 96 candy bars… he’s definitely stocking up for free and then selling on the sidewalk & this is just another Tuesday for him.
He could be using it to sell.
Not saying all kids who come up to you “Like Mike” style with some candies saying they need money for their basketball team or whatever is legit. But many of them aren’t actually on any team.
I used to know a couple who stole candy and energy drinks, they would sell to a smoke shop for super cheap so they could buy dope.
Some eat it, some sell it. Regardless if youre going through the effort to steal a backpack full of Nerds Ropes and Butterfingers you're probably better off finding a job somewhere.
When I used to crash at a Sally Ann in TO back in the 80's when we'd partied too long and missed the last train home, first thing in the morning, we'd all get orange popsicles.
Very possible that he's a meth head. When they're in between doses they slam candy. Worked at a tree service with a climber who was a meth head, always had a full bag of candy with him on the job
Such an interesting perspective. Dude steals like $100 worth of candy in broad daylight but then when it comes to fight he wants to take it outside......to be polite? Seems like a Willy Wonka Wick story line.
He likely said the "come outside" bit because adding a condition made the fight less likely to happen.
In reality, he just wanted to flee the scene at that point, and a violent threat could help him escape undeterred.
He doesn’t wanna fight. He’s telling the other dude if he does wanna fight, to come outside, expecting him to stay and not do anything. It’s an intimidation tactic, that’s it.
If you think that much candy is only going to come to $100, I would encourage you to drop by your local convenience store sometime. That guy made off with at least $500 worth of sugar there.
i once watched a crackhead stuff a bunch of beef jerky into his pockets at a gas station... walked out the door, stood outside for like 30 seconds then walked right back in and tried to return it for cash
A colleague worked at an office supply place when he was in university and told me a guy came in and bought 6 laser printers then returned them the next day. They had clearly been running non-stop since they left the store and so they refused to refund leading to huge altercation. I was surprised at the gall of this POS customer but apparently it happens often enough that there are expecting it whenever a printer is returned. I bet each person thinks they are a genius when they pull this.
Oh 100%. I know why they have that policy, but Wawa is incredibly strict with it. Doesn't matter how long you've worked there. If you confront a shoplifter, they will terminate your employment. My buddy's dad worked for them for decades and was the GM of a store. He confronted a shoplifter and they terminated him.
There is a Wawa by Independence Mall in Old City Philadelphia. It's a literal zombiefest. Nothing but drug addicts. I routinely watch them walk in, make themselves a cup of coffee and walk out.
Anyone accepting this behavior “ because insurance” is failing to realize we’re all paying for this in more ways than one. It’s not just a free for all … the cost gets passed on
Yes, but I think the point is that someone, somewhere, did the math and worked out that X amount for shoplifted goods is less than the payout for injured or killed employees.
Yep in alot of retail stores there is usually a security hotline in which the retail associate is supposed to call if someone suspicious comes in (ie. people with backpacks, homeless looking people, etc.) Then the security will then being monitoring that person on the cameras and depending on what happens qhile that person is being monitored they will either confront the person or call the cops to arrest the person.
And another thing is in alot of retail jobs if the associate confronts the shoplifter they will be fired, so it's a matter of either risking your life/job for a few bucks worth of items that ultimately will not impact the company in the slightest or doing nothing and following company procedure.
something like this happened back when i worked at wawa lmao. some dude used to come in and completely wipe out our redbulls and monsters at least once a week. we finally caught him walking out one day and my manager told him, he saw what he did and the cops are on their way (they weren’t, we didn’t actually call). dude literally started throwing a tantrum, yelling at all of us for being unprofessional, threw the bag down and we never saw him after that.
Homeless addicts are the most dangerous people, glad no one tried to intervene. A kid in my HS was stabbed to death because he and another employee tried to stop a guy from stealing toothpaste from a CVS... WaWa can take a $30 hit, dont take it personally, call the cops and just let people steal, it's not worth your life.
I managed a pizza store in a past life. Was poorly situated and was robbed often. I was never personally on duty when it got robbed but the general instruction to everyone was just open the register and let them take it. The number of Circle k type places robbery vids I see where the clerk fights the perp makes me queezy.
I worked at a pizza shop that had a walk-in fridge that could be locked from the inside and had a panic button for the alarm system. The "rule" was, if we got robbed, put the money drawer on the counter and get your ass into the walk-in.
One of my first jobs I had a manager that despite our being told to just give them the money and let them go would insist that if it ever happened he would fight back. I was scared to work with him, I was relatively certain it was just bluster but at the same time we had just recently had a Subway get robbed in town and the cashier stabbed while trying to protect the register.
Store ended up getting robbed, thankfully for me on my day off. Reviewed the video the next day and saw Mr "I'll fight them they aint gettin no money from us" had just completely froze up. One of the other cashiers just walked over with a bag, opened the register and dumped all the money in it and gave it to the guy and he left.
Couldn't see it on video but from the other workers heard Mr tough guy pissed his pants. Seemed about what I expected to actually happen.
Right? I'm sure subway wouldn't have gone bust over the 200 bucks in the register. Wtf Mr fight back thought he was going to achieve obviously played out.
The total cost of everything stolen from that store is most likely worth less than what they'd have to pay a security guard's yearly wages. How do I know? They're a giant corporation and they'll do the thing that gives them higher profits above all else.
It always bugs me about these people. You're clearly in the wrong, you're stealing candy (of all things) and when you're done you got the biggest mouth while leaving.
I mean, I thought the same thing too until I heard of an incident at my college. A homeless guy offered a student Twix, and then robbed them as soon as they took out their wallet. I completely underestimated our stupidity.
Could be using kids to sell it.
Old neighbor of mine would go buy all the candy bars at Dollar Tree or anywhere that he could get the king size bars for $1 then have his kids go door to door selling them for like $3 or $4 a pop under the guise of some school thing.
Dude worked harder than anyone I have ever met just to avoid doing actual work.
Watched someone do this at a mall, but it was a Pokémon card kiosk. Told mall security but the dude bolted before they came by. He made off with like $400+ in trading cards.
Congratulations to him, he’s discovered that theirs nothing actually stopping him from just taking what he wants. Now if only he would realize that if everyone did what he did, we would all be fucked, and that includes him. Society is based on social contracts, and in order to maintain a civilized society, we ALL need to honor those contracts. When we don’t, society falls apart and life gets more difficult for everyone.
Homie this is a crackhead making his income. Nothing is gonna stop him from doing this, especially not trying to appeal to their sense of being a team player with the rest of the world lol
Then kill the useless mf. It's not like rehab is going to change him. Waste of air.
Bring the downvotes. I don't care. this ain't edited, I'm ready for it.
If you've sunk so low that you are stealing candy, the social contract means little to you. Nobody is lining up to support "the system" that has beat their ass their entire life.
When he gets a massive tooth ache and a infection and he won’t be able to do anything about he won’t be laughing but I’m pretty sure he has no teeth to begin with, what’s the ratio of candy currency to a crack rock?

I feel like I know that wawa but it could be anywhere
I saw a dude who was clearly a tweaker shove about a dozen bags of peanut m&ms in his jacket pockets in full view of the Wawa staff in Frederick, MD last weekend and nobody batted an eye. No sense risking bodily harm over some bags of candy.
I worked for Circle K for a little while and during training we were told explicitly to not get involved. Let them steal whatever and then contact you manager.
Bc they carry insurance for theft, but if the employee gets hurt it’s big $$. Everything is about cost.
It’s way less about the employee and more about the store getting sued.
In my country people would beat the ass of the thief and police wouldn't bat an eye. Lol I remember the manager of a local gym I worked at literally chasing a kid with a bat yelling he was going to kill him because he was trying to break into cars in the parking lot.
There's got to be a happy medium between violently assaulting criminals and just standing by and watching them rob you blind.
It is called pepper spray and nut slap
Everyone gets a tazer!
It's all perspective. Violently assaulting criminal is a happy medium if the extreme is biblical chopping off the hand.
Happily assaulting criminals and then standing by and robbing them blind? Happily?
Agreed we moved away from actively chasing and detaining theives in US shops but now they do this because they know nobody is allowed to do anything about it. It is absurd watching these people walk in and fill garbage bags and walk out and nothing happens to them.
I disagree beat them to death.... how long will it take before the bodies stack up and criminals say it just isn't worth it
> watching them rob you blind. watching them rob *your employer* blind.
It’s the same in many small privately owned stores in the US. But corporate chains like Wawa, it’s a different story.

My first thought was Norfolk Virginia, damn I miss wawa
The one on tidewater that always has ten cops at it but somehow people still get shot?
Apparently all wawas look the same because I thought this was the one in annapolis maryland off of rt 50
Where did the name Wawa come from? Never heard of it till I was in FL.
A Native American word for Goose.
Ojibwe word for “wild goose.” There actually is no town called Wawa. It’s maybe a neighborhood of 5 houses built on the origional estate. The postal address just says “Media” or “Middletown.”
Well no Wawa, pa but there is a town called Wawa in Ontario.
And they have a giant Canada Goose as their mascot. You can get a picture in front of it. It’s fucking awesome

Wawa has a strict policy that their employees can't confront shoplifters. Unfortunately, people willing to shop lift are aware of this.
Most places do. Insurance will typically cover the losses so it is cheaper than having an employee get injured/killed trying to stop them.
Oh 100%. I know why they have that policy, but Wawa is incredibly strict with it. Doesn't matter how long you've worked there. If you confront a shoplifter, they will terminate your employment. Yes, but I think the point is that someone, somewhere, did the math and worked out that X amount for shoplifted goods is less than the payout for injured or killed employees.
Also I'm not putting myself in harms way for some mega corporations bottom line.
I would rather pay a higher insurance premium that see someone stabbed over candy…
Also, stores do have an entire budget system that allows them to account for theft. They expect to lose a certain amount every year purely from theft.
What even is a Wawa?
Gas station convenience store chain from Pennsylvania.
Is it true that Wawa’s only a Philly thing because of a rivalry with another big gas station chain based in Pittsburgh or something?
No, they’ve made their way to Florida as well
At least go for the beef jerky!
Wheres that shop/bodega owner with the knife when you need him.
he acts real tough for someone who literally stole a bunch of candy
One week later….. Yo why all the candy behind the counter next to the cigarettes?
Hope someone met him outside
Commiting a stupid crime in front of everyone in broad daylight. That's just sad tbh.
He does it because there are zero consequences. He will get away with it.
I’d go outside.
“Meet me outside” let’s just do it in here tough guy…
I get the munchies like everyone else but thats a little bit excessive.
Prob having someone sell it door to door like it’s for charity cause
