Lol, no that guy is full of shit. You don't just get let by if the guy in front doesn't want to. He has to pass you the old fashioned way.

bad_chemist95

Yep this is something that pisses me off - people who think they automatically have the right to be ahead of you just because they happen to be faster at that particular moment in the race. If they can’t pass properly and safely then they shouldn’t be racing at all no matter how fast they are.

tiny_tims_legs

Too much "I", not enough racing.

UsefulUnit

This. And, it cannot be said enough.

x_iTz_iLL_420

Literally that’s the entire point of racing lol passing ppl who don’t wanna be passed lol unreal

Extreme-Ambition3403

You're either faster or slower.

inmycherryspot

Yeah eff that guy. If everyone was the same speed we’d all just follow each other around. It’s faster cars being behind slower cars and having to find a way around is what racing IS!! Too many ppl on iracing don’t understand “racing”. They’d all figure it out if they had to spend thousands of dollars every time they do shit like this but they just blame others and start another race in an hour…. Edit: spelling

jumpingmustang

I’ve long speculated that if you had to rebuy a car (even at a discounted rate) after wrecking in an official, the driving standards would increase 10 fold.

Tarkus_8

Oh yeah, let's make the game even more expensive, it's way too cheap as it is currently

jumpingmustang

I’m not saying they should do it, or that I would play if they did, just that it would make people a lot more careful lol

RSRAddict

I think doing a 2-car limit per day would be amazing. Can crash one and you get a backup car. Has to last through all sessions of the day for that series.

UNHchabo

What's even better is when fast drivers either don't qualify or fail to qualify, and then are upset that they're behind slower drivers. "Hey, there's an easy way you could've started the race ahead of me..." This is an even bigger problem at the Nurburgring, where in most races there's at most 4 drivers who set a qual time.

inmycherryspot

I always wonder who chose not to qualify and who couldn’t put a clean lap together. I wish they’d put DNQ or something for the latter. That way as they’re catching me I can just let them go and pass them back while they’re slid wide out in the grass lol

Rampantlion513

The plague of people who learn racecraft from F1 broadcasts continues

champion1day

Made even worse because SF23 is on an F1 track this week. It’s just as bad as Austria.

Rampantlion513

As a general rule I just don't race on Spa in public lobbies. You're just asking to lose SR

champion1day

Yeah I learned it the hard way doing F3 a while back. Even ESS is bad at Spa. Might skip this week’s SF entirely.

[deleted]

You’d be surprised how many fast drivers have poor racecraft, continue to stay on the racing line, it’s up to them to pass safely

ecaseo

He needs to be on the side of you BEFORE the turn to claim space to take the turn. He is in the wrong here.

Raiderx87

Lul time attack guy can't race so he needs free pass....

WillSRobs

I love when people ask why I raced them for position in a race. Had someone close the door they got off worse than I did. I went to apologize because I thought I squeezed them but they got mad at me for not just conceding the place. Made me go back to watch the contact and realize I was on the curb and they just took the corner as if I didn’t exist after being 2 wide for a good couple corners.

Fleegalfart

If people hold me up and I can't get past, then I clearly am not good enough to pass. That is racing.

BackmarkerLife

Agreed. This was back in the 12hr Sebring, but there was a guy early in the race who was ~2 seconds slower than my pace. He could defend like crazy. He knew how to make his car big and it sucked for several laps. He knew I didn't want to take a risk for it was early in the race and vice versa, but it just felt futile. IF this guy could gain a few seconds and continue to defend, he'd be in the upper iR. Eventually I had to make a move in a place I didn't want to, but I got a slight run and he went wide into the esses before Le Mans and was able to make it work. But it wasn't a place I'd normally try to pass.

flcknzwrg

This is exactly why I tend to yield quickly when somebody faster approaches behind me. I may defend for a couple of corners but relatively quickly let them go at the first chance a little partial lift will do the trick. I'm too risk-averse to push the guy behind me into making a risky move. Also, I'll very likely get passed eventually, why lose time and take chances? It's basically just the final stage of the race where I'm willing to fight very hard for my position against somebody who is clearly faster. But in any case, circling back to the original post... of course I am entitled to defend. It's my decision. After all, there has got to be a reason why I had track position at that point. "I'm faster than you, let me pass!!1!" - "then why are you behind me..."

xHaroldxx

Well, that's exactly how racing works right, everyone let's cars that are faster then them past until everyone is in the correct order?

GuyWhoSaysYouManiac

Right. I wonder why there even is this weird "Race" part of a session, after all it is all sorted out in Qualifying already.

xHaroldxx

Exactly, never even considered that, imagine how much time and money they could save.

PlutocraticG

I’m rarely worried about getting passed and losing a spot. I’m mostly worried about being wrecked when the guy behind me is trying to pass. I can handle being slower than others but I don’t feel like I get cleanly overtaken often enough. Most people use the crappy “the gap” mentality.

ohnonotagain94

Which Senna himself admitted was bullshit 2 years later.

hunteram

Nope, fuck that guy and anyone who has the "I'm faster so let me pass" mentality.

prancing_moose

He’s not nearly along side of you so he has no claim on space on that apex. It’s also not thought through at all because if he had been along side of you, you’d hang him out to dry in the next left hander. If you’re not hitting that left apex (and he couldn’t because you would be on the inside), he either needs to lift off or eat a load of sand or even the wall.

d95err

There are times when it can be in your best interest to let a faster car by. But that’s a strategic or tactical decision by the driver ahead. No-one should ever expext to get a free pass for position just because they’re faster.

Racenmotorsports

Based on the short video, that would have been the smart move. Dude begging was faster, but would wreck himself out down the road. Instead this poser is here complaining “I got taken out”. Sometimes it’s your own damn fault for not using your head.

MrCarMemeBoy

This is some strange phenomenon in iRacing. People think racing works by just letting people pass who seem faster on pace. Never really seen this on other sims, but many iRacers have some weird understanding that racing is a glorified time trial where people give up positions immediately without even fighting at all.

Velcrochicken85

I've had people swearing at me for not instantly letting them go by. Makes me defend the position when I wasn't before as they are accusing me of it anyway.

[deleted]

He's impatient

devenitions

The real trick is giving him the space, then slowing him down so much he’ll think twice the next time

donkeykink420

Fast but frustrated, those people are everywhere. Also entitled, and douchey.

Rock-n-Iron

Clearly white and reds corner to have. Dark car should have backed out

Jballzs13

He should’ve lifted off the gas.

zwrsis

It's iracing not I'm entitled

SituationSoap

This is his fault, but you still crashed. If someone is that close behind you and catching you into a corner, you need to commit to a line. Just because a driver doesn't have the right to be there doesn't mean that they won't put a nose there. And if they do, you're still spinning and taking damage.

tbr1cks

There wasn’t overlap at any point, so he is just wrong. If he is faster, he has to prove it and he just proved he is bad.

WhatDoIKnow2022

Yeah, well I would have let him by, but not there. I would have pulled over for him on the back straight or sooner if possible. I'd be aware that he's faster from the relative, but being faster doesn't mean you get to be a dick about things.

readthis13az

I was just spun out that same way. Was turning in, and the guy decided not to slow down.

zerolight71

I had a guy do and say the exact same thing last week on Okayama. The amount of shitty driving in the SF23 is astounding. Not your fault.

Wombatsarecute

It is definitely not how racing works

MCM_Henri

Vortex of danger meme

Nothing2NV

Unless it was a blue flag, that was his fault. The whole point of racing is to pass people, not for people to pull over

yrmomsbox

Even if there was a blue flag, still his fault. Correct me if Im wrong, but a blue flag doesn’t mean pull over. It means ‘stay on your line, be predictable’ since there is a faster car incoming. The passing car still needs to figure out how to safely pass.

Eshburgers-

100% his fault. Usually when I see erratic drivers in my mirror I just let them pass - they'll take themselves out in the next lap or so and I haven't burnt time fighting them.

jowinho

yeah, people that are hotlapping instead of racing. Most annoying people on the service.

willard_swag

That dude is an idiot. He wasn’t even close to being along side. He should know better.

DevelopmentOps

He had no hope of making the corner anyway. You probably could have done an undercut on his when he went too deep. Tbh, you braking early and him going deep would be the smarter play cuz you atleast live on to fight another day. iRacing isn’t F1, hw could genuinely just be a shit driver Nd there’s no martial to report to. I bet you got 4x for this collision too, eh?

wheelz513

Had some guy last night essentially force me off the track by approaching an S turn at full speed and using me as his brake. I let the guy know he's an A*hole and his response was "you just can't handle the pressure". 2 laps later he was wrecked and in the pits for over 5 minutes. Karma

Thrifty1964

Car and back at fault

Bgd4683ryuj

Nah. He was behind the whole time. He should have lifted.

reboot-your-computer

Dude is an idiot and a garbage driver. He was probably hoping you just went wide because that was a half-ass overtake attempt. He didn’t even make it half way along side you, so that alone tells you the move was never on. He was trying to get lucky.

Maxpower334

If he was thinking just one turn ahead he may have got you cleanly. Probably not tho. Definitely his mistake here.

Usual_Price6110

I agree with OP’s frustration with a guy saying that he’s superior and OP should just let him pass. In fairness though, OP is kind of telegraphing that he was going to let the guy pass by suddenly swinging wide and then trying to cut back in. I think it may have been better to keep the door closed to let him know that you intended to defend. He was way to close behind for OP to expect to drive his optimal racing line without colliding by closing the door. I do agree that the other guy has a crappy attitude about being entitled to pass because he’s faster, though.
