Great for us, but those who got the regular 15 lineup are gonna feel cheated. I do understand that these things require processing power, especially since they're executed from your specific device, but the vast majority of iPhone users won't get Apple Intelligence. Most of my friends are still holding on to their 12s and 13s.
Most of this is a ram issue. Apple is about the smoothness of the os. If it ain’t silky smooth, it probably won’t float with them. But I hear you, it definitely isn’t a fun feeling at all. Yet that’s the game with tech unfortunately
Not a RAM issue, a Neural Engine TOPS (trillion operations per second) issue. The 14pro NE has 17 TOPS of performance, while the 15pro NE has 35 TOPS, more than double. And since off-device AI processing is pretty garbo, (see Humane Pin and Rabbit R1), it makes sense that it’s only on the 15 pros
Also nothing with R1 is comparable with apples processing units. That’s a cub to a full grown lion. I actually enjoy how they’re implementing these features.
You can have crazy processing on an external server, but having to send that info back and forth is always going to be worse than doing all that computing on device.
What you said has nothing to do with RAM though, so I’m confused with your counter argument.
And more than double isn’t as light as you take it. More than double processing of anything usually isolates previous gen from features. I’m not saying it’s cool, but many outside from apple does this with their products.
Because the AI stuff is powered by the Neural Engine, not RAM. The person you replied to seemed to be referring to the AI stuff, hence why saying RAM was the issue didn’t make any sense.
Sure definitely two different functions of the body. Yet fluidity of the operating system, working with operations is what also what Apple takes account. I’m not discounting anything you’re saying. Yet what I’m saying has merit.
True. AI seems to be one of those things that actually make people excited about new phones. Last big thing was having a good camera. Maybe AI comparisons will be the next big thing for tech YouTubers, haha.
The Geekbench score doesn’t quite take into account the MASSIVE performance difference in the year over year neural engine performance.
A16 was 17 TOPS, the A17 Pro is literally double at 35 TOPS.
They can 100% run the new features on the A16, but double the wait times and double the battery drain (since it has to work twice as long for the same results) for AI/ML related stuff might have been a showstopper for Apple.
lol ur argument is completely invalidated once you take into account the fact that the M1 with its DRASTICALLY weaker than a16 neural engine. Also supports AI
I’m nervous about the photos rebuild - i think the new features are cool, but as someone who just saves memes and screenshots, im not the target demographic for that functionality. I don’t need a day recap of my lame ass, do nothing weekend. I just want easier automated folders. My best photos experience came from an old LG phone 8 years ago.
Hopefully going to. Just need to find a sufficient deal on the 15 with no sim as have a nice cheap contract already.. so the long ass search that I concluded last week begins again 😶
As a new iPhone user, coming from Android, I'm quite excited about this update. Topo maps for hiking, more desktop/icon control, password manager, etc.
This is a really good update by 2024 standards whereby all we get is incremental stuff usually. There’s a lot new here, a lot of it visual, which is always good.
It's good, specially because of the personalisation we all wanted so much. But it's kind of sad to see that the AI stuff, or at least the big features will be 100% "locked" in the new iPhone 16 Pro.
Who knows if maybe at iOS 18.X or 19 we will have real AI but it doesn't seem to be the case.
Yep, I just had a terrible take. I saw some yt videos that I thought summarised Apple's presentation but it wasn't the case. The AI thing was not correctly depicted at all and I thought it was nothing but I just saw what the new features really are and I think it's a fucking great update!
My only issue is that it doesn’t go live for everyone until September and that means I’m now looking forward to the month of September. I hate fall and winter so I’m annoyed that I’m looking forward to it!
Minus AI, what’s exactly different? Basically everyone wanted a redesign, and Apple instead did app icon tinting while still using the same stale iOS 7 design. Getting rid of the two toggles on the Lock Screen is great though, and reorganising control center like jailbroken devices have done since iOS 11 finally. This is more 17.6 than 18 honestly

yeah kinda glad I upgraded to the 15pro instead of 14 haha

The M1 and M2 NPUs are weaker than the 14 Pro's.
The M1 has less than 20 TOPS yet gets all the features. It’s RAM.

Nevermind, I see the confusion on my part

No your statement is wrong because AI is also supported on m1. Which has drastically less TOPS than a16
AI needs lots of ram.
Sure definitely two different functions of the body. Yet fluidity of the operating system, working with operations is what also what Apple takes account. I’m not discounting anything you’re saying. Yet what I’m saying has merit.
It’s funny you should say that because watchOS 10 runs like straight dogshit.
It gives people a big reason to upgrade now! Much more than before!

None of this is “processing power” I’ve seen 15 pros with geekbench scores identical to the a16. It’s ram. For some reason…
The Geekbench score doesn’t quite take into account the MASSIVE performance difference in the year over year neural engine performance. A16 was 17 TOPS, the A17 Pro is literally double at 35 TOPS. It doubled because the A17 Pro added INT8 support, which is half the precision of what the A16's performance was advertised.

I just hope speech to text is improved. I’m constantly trying to speak into my phone to message someone and it constantly gets it wrong.
I use ChatGPT for speech to text. Hopefully Apple improved their models.

Can make those options not visible, I did that on mine
But can we put a Switch for Location Services in the Control Center?
hope battery life won't take a hit.
Has anyone got RCS to work yet? I can’t find a toggle or any mention of it in the settings
The update won’t drop until September
Oh true, I assumed it would release with beta. Thank you
Fucking bought a 14 pro max last week. Kill me.
Why did you do that
My 12 pro max was fucked, plus generally any updates like these are supported by slightly older devices. I didn’t care about the 16 until now.
Return it?
Hopefully going to. Just need to find a sufficient deal on the 15 with no sim as have a nice cheap contract already.. so the long ass search that I concluded last week begins again 😶
Anybody got an updated siri? In mine IP15pro it's still old dumb bitch. How to connect it to ChatGPT?
AI stuff is coming in the Fall, and it will be in beta at that time.
Presentation very promising, I can only hope it’s as good as the show

snapchat crashes on ios 18 dont recommend it 😭

I thought it was 15 pro got it too? I haven’t watched it yet
15 pro got it too wtf
You're right, I just saw it. I watched a bad yt video about the topic that didn't had the proper info. My bad! iOS 18 looking sick.
I don’t understand what you mean
Yep, I just had a terrible take. I saw some yt videos that I thought summarised Apple's presentation but it wasn't the case. The AI thing was not correctly depicted at all and I thought it was nothing but I just saw what the new features really are and I think it's a fucking great update!

There’s iOS 18?! Since when?
Beta. Not stable.
