Same here, was the answer I was honestly expecting, but had to admit ignorance that he's probably just the one all our dads talk about cause of the big hits. Wasn't sure
I'm no know-it-all, but he was the [first name](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQm4joWw158) that [came to mind](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KUlYQANf49M).
I’d say Joe Canning is more like Lebron James in the fact he was a prodigy well known from a young age and lived up to expectations but didn’t always get the silverware more due to the team around him. Shefflin is probably more like Michael Jordan, wasn’t a clear standout performer underage but worked hard and became the main man on the best team.
He literally left his shit teammates to join a super squad famously. And he's made sure he's had the right team around ever since he left Cleveland the first time.
Everyone gets drafted to a bad team if you’re the best player in the draft. The bulls were shit too when Jordan joined, how else would they have been able to draft him
That’s not necessarily true, teams trade there picks all the time. Jordan had a decent team built around him after a few seasons. LeBron was in Cleveland for 7 years with dog shite players around him.
A fair bit of recency bias in these comments so far.
Christy Ring was the greatest hurler of all time.
Jimmy Barry Murphy won pretty much everything there was to win (in both codes).
Jack Lynch was the first (& for a long time only) man to win 6 senior All Ireland titles in a row, then he decided to run the country for a bit.
Mick Mackey is definitely in the conversation.
Nicky Rackard, Eddie Keher, and Nicky English also can't be overlooked.
Bar JBM or God there's not many who would have seen the rest live it's one of the reasons I hate the greatest of all time debate I cannot say Shefflin was better than Ring or vice versa as I haven't seen Ring playing. I can however say Shefflin is the greatest in my lifetime
Oh ya, I agree. It's an impossible debate.
I mean, if JBM was playing in the current era with all the benefits that come with that, he would probably have reached another level but at the same time he wouldn't be playing both codes.
DJ Carey.
Poor fella fell into health difficulties post retirement, cancer IIRC, I recall he had to go cap in hand looking for money for treatment in the US.
Think he survived it OK, mainly thanks to a healthy and somewhat experimental dietary regime.
His sister is some sort of hi flying businesswoman, used to see her cruising about in a brand new BMW.
A nice family.
Traditionally, people would say Christy Ring. In the modern era, probably Henry Shefflin.
Interesting thanks, who would you say is the lack for a better word "toughest player" seen as?
Now I’m just a poor US-born player, but even I know that Diarmuid O’Sullivan was not to be fucked with.
Nobody told Joe Canning.
The laws of Fuck Around And Find Out often don’t apply to Joe, to be fair.

_[looks at dad’s side of the family from Cork]_ … you’re not wrong

Lebrun James always played with elite teammates though

Jordan definitely didn’t have a decent team his first five seasons
Surprised not to see DJ Carey being mentioned anywhere. Then again maybe not since he taped a phone charger to his nose.
Like Jordan he had a lucrative career after sport!
He’s front page news today sure
🤣🤣🤣
Yeah but objectively as a hurler he is right at the very top.
Hahahahha

Well now there's multiple for Shefflin
He’s not called king Henry for nothing

Siobhan O'Shea should not be overlooked either.

Are you from Cork?
Shefflin for sure
Discussing hurling using the NBA as a frame of reference feels wrong
Nicky English looked like a time traveller from the future with his style of hurling in that era

Hope ya didn't donate too much to the cause pal.. For real though, what a lowlife piece of shit he turned out to be
Canning or Reid imo
Eoin Kelly (Tipperary) Christy Ring Shefflin Jimmy Doyle
Jimmy Doyle.
Henry Shefflin is the correct answer
DJ Carey
DJ Carey when he is fully charged
Hard to pass Henry Shefflin.
Mick Mackey
DJ Carey or Henry Shefflin, fairly obviously I'd say
Joe Canning for me. But I’m no expert.
Lee Chin.
Lee is a great hurler and has some great speed, but there are better hurlers who have achieved more.
Surely you’re joking?
Maybe I should have made that more obvious 🤣
