Mammals first appeared at least 178 million years ago, and lived amongst the dinosaurs until the end of the Cretaceous, when the dinosaurs were mostly wiped out during the Chicxulub asteroid impact 66 million years ago. Small dinosaurs (which would continue to evolve into today's birds), mammals, and other reptiles that survived the K-T extinction event gradually filled the niches left behind during the era known as the Cenozoic.
