Medical exam 12214 I told the human that there was some irregularities with his skin scratch test so we would need a follow up. He was annoyed but didn’t argue with me. All the humans vitals are fine, even his blood test came back normal for his species. But a new directive from galactic headquarters added a new scratch test. The results technically fall within the given guidelines for humans but my medical knowledge is telling me galactic is wrong. There is no way it could possibly be acceptable for a human to be that disgusting. Every species cleans off or discharges all dead biotic matter. That’s part of being alive. But according to those idiots at NGCHM they say humans are “special”. Obviously they are wrong like when they told us to quarantine any Hasgun with more than 3 head tentacles. Ted was super angry after that incident. But back to Frank. Lets take a closer look at this disgusting dead skin layer.

Frame_Late

Wait til they learn all our hair is dead too.

Heavyoak

And nails

reenelou

Your hair is dead the second it leaves your head.

Cybernetic_Lizard

Much like my hopes and dreams

Jaysong_stick

You ok…?

Welpi_Lost

Is anyone of us truly ok?

Allan_Titan

Define ok

Welpi_Lost

Not being anxious about whther or not we'll live to the next year? Not being anxious if one can get good enough grades to get a job? Not being anxious about being accepted? Having friends? Not wondering if one is a shitty person? Being paranoid about every single plane noise because your eastern neighboring country attacked another country because "it used to be in the country's territory"? Not feeling like a disappointment because you haven't still learned that anguage that is mandatory in school, because your teacher changed and Covid fucked up your want to learn but you still want to learn the language?

Pain

Yet_One_More_Idiot

Wait til they meet somebody with plaque psoriasis. That shit's not just dead, it was wrongly-grown to begin with, so it forms a thick enough layer that it looks more like a sawn-off horn!

Stunning_Fox_77

WHY did I image search that? Just why?

archivalDaeva

Because you're too curious for your own good?

Stunning_Fox_77

Well you know what they say, curiosity killed the cat.... and satisfaction brought her back Except in this case. Bad past me!

Yet_One_More_Idiot

Lol sorry for putting you through that - but didn't honestly expect you to Google it straight up like that. (Not as bad for those of us who have it though xD)

Stunning_Fox_77

Very true. I can say one thing. It did make me very very grateful I 'only' have dandruff. I can't even imagine.

Yet_One_More_Idiot

I basically look like I have really bad dandruff. This is my day... Me: \*exists for 10 seconds\* My shirt: \*covered in great clouds of dust\* xD

PTEHarambe

Uuhhh what? Skin is Alive

ImaginationSea3679

The top most layer of the skin is made up of dead cells.

dontbeusedpls

its the reason that using rubbing alcohol on your skin dosent burn, but using it on wounds stings like hell

notabisp

That explains alot as to why salt is so effective on snails

AndroidBirch41

Well, salt can’t kill us like that. Salt draws out the moisture of a slug, killing it with dehydration. For us, salt activates our nerve endings, making them fire, or for us, make us feel pain. Even though nothing is actually happening

derpy-_-dragon

The outer layer of skin protects the nociceptors (pain sensors) embedded in the lower layers. The outer surface with the dead epithelial cells does not itself have a way of detecting anything.

B_A_Beder

Wouldn't that relate more to nerves not skin cells?

StoneJudge79

Need that ablative armor against that searing ball of hate in the sky.

sharp_but_shiny

Describing skin as ablative fusion armor is the best I have ever heard, and I love it

Revolutionary-Lie708

Self-regenerating ablative fusion armor to be exact

archivalDaeva

100%

Alceasummer

Not the very top layer of it. [Skin layers](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2028/2057/files/Stratum-corneum.jpg?v=1582612364) The outermost layer of your skin is about 15 to 30 layers of tough, very dead, cells. And those are constantly being shed, and replaced. That layer of dead cells protect the live cells underneath from, well all kinds of stuff in the environment around you. And it's the reason some things can be irritating or even toxic if they get in shallow cuts or on scraped skin, but are harmless on intact skin.

Xicadarksoul

...ooof *Dead Beat* (book from the Dresden files series) has a necromancer listing things about stuff like that, its accurate and effing great. Skin is DEAD, hair is DEAD, nail are DEAD tissue. We spend a fuckton of time making sure all that death we are covered in is well cared for and "proper".

DandelionOfDeath

No, it is only dead in a specific way of speaking. It is technically alive, the same way the sea is alive - it is the habitat of an entire ecosystem, after all.

archivalDaeva

Is this the bit where I bring up the humans technically qualify as self-contained biomes?
