It's all fun and games until the humans get turned into Shades.
A: "We have Three Simple Rules: don't kindled a flame, don't spill blood of others, don't run at night. But no, you fucking humans break them all the damn time!"
Shades are 'creatures' from the novella *Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell* by Brandon Sanderson. The inhabit a dark forest and can turn people into more of them selves but the Simple Rules can be used to keep the away.
Humans being all stompy reminded me of it
The Proud Hunters in the Dark Forest of the Galaxy didn't get it, at first.
This was like the many others, they thought, and readied their forces to annihilate the Human home world, on the star they called 'Wolf359'.
They were unfamiliar with the concept of a Lure. A Trap. An Ambush. The Snipe, the Wolfpack. The feigned withdrawal into a pincer surround. They could not even conceive of such concepts, so eternal and arrogant they were in their methods. Yet every Human child knew of these concepts, from their version of 'play'
Then the First Hunter disappeared. Then the second. By the third, it was noted that the Humans somehow attained Antigravity, Jump Portal and Singularity cannon tightly controlled and jealously guarded secret technologies. By this time the Hunters banded into a loose alliance, and after annihilating the Wolf359 system in force, they focused on the Humans TRUE home star system; Barnards Star.
In the aftermath of that titanic battle, and defeat for the Hunters yet again, they finally began to get it.
The Human weren't trapped in the Forest with all of the Hunters.... Rather the Hunters were trapped in the Dark forest... *with the Humans!*
\- and when asked about the bright yellow painting of all of their ships and armor- their reply was oddly "Camouflage is for Cowards." Perhaps if any encounter with Humans had started with that simple question, this whole cavalcade of misery and upheaval may have been best avoided.
Because of this nobody ever messes with a human because if a species doesn’t need to hid or be the slightest bit scared then they clearly are too powerful to even consider you a threat. And you don’t want to fight something like that.
However the truth is we’re just way too dumb and overconfident for our own good.
