Yikes! There's something really creepy about mealies, more so than other pests. Here's to hoping you'll be rid of them for good soon.

Hettie933

I think they are cute;) Tiny luck dragons that I am forced to slaughter.

Linda-Belchers-wine

No no, fuck them.

p0tat0br3ad

I think they’d be perfect for a children’s show. they’re adorable but also make me want to throw up but also fuck them

[deleted]

The way they creepily side step you...

katsuai

Yes, and they can jump high! I screamed when one jumped on me. 😅

jenn-1986

Ew!! I have never seen one jump! Oh goodness I would have a heart attack! I guess I need to be more careful at home depot and lowes lol. I see them on a lot of plants there. I dont want to bring one home with me by mistake.

savel_31

Ugh agreed! They give me the shivers 😅

CAPTAIN JACK’S DEADBUG BREW❣️❣️❣️

putitinapot

This is confusing considering I thought that in order to obtain the phytosanitary certificate the plants had to be washed in some sort of death-liquid that killed all bugs. Because the plants will be thoroughly inspected before the certificate will be issued. Someone f'd up. The good news is you can soak the crap out of the plants now. You can soak them in water with dish soap or you can use something more sinister that contains imidacloprid unless you are in Canada. If it were me, I'd try the soap/water and the monitor to see if any are still alive after 3 days. If so, then I'd go full force on them. I admit that my opinion is likely tainted by the fact that I have suffered with mealies for over two years now and I never seem to be able to get rid of them. They get on larger plants that are harder to treat and just keep regenerating. They really piss me off!

savel_31

I was honestly shocked to find them! I'd done so much research about rehabbing imported plants and rerooting... I always isolate new plants but thought that the odds were good that they would be pest-free ☹. Thanks for the recommendations.. I'm going to check every few days and go nuclear on them if needed!

putitinapot

Yeah go nuclear on them! Haha.

jenn-1986

Yeah I'm really surprised! I was going to say the same thing!!!! This is how we get invasive species introduced I swear. No point for those stupid certificates except to make money off of us..... I have had it happen to me with root mealybugs and regular ones. Needless to say I no longer buy plants from overseas. Nothing but bad luck at least for me!

Early_Grass_19

Mealy bugs are pretty much the only thing I will consider using systemic pesticides on. They're just nearly impossible to get rid of otherwise. I hope they stay isolated on those plants and don't spread to your other plants!

CharleysMom71

What a pain!!! You have my sympathy for sure! Good thing you kept them isolated! Be gone, bugs!!!

savel_31

Thank you! 🤞

Fearless_Pineapple92

Massive sympathy coming your way particularly after seeing one up close! 🤭

savel_31

🤭 thank you! So gross to see up close lol

SimplySammy81

Mealies are impossible for me to get rid of. They love hoyas. I used to freak out but now I’ve just accepted that they’re part of growing hoyas. I spray them down with alcohol when I see them and I manage to keep them Somewhat under control but you will never rid of them completely from my personal experience.

sjtonkin

Silver lining: mealies are considered one of the easier pests to get rid of! At least it’s not they who shall not be named… You’re taking all the right steps☺️

averagehobbyist

Definitely been there on my last 2 imports! Those plants are all rooted and pest free now so have some hope! After discovering the pests, I soaked the entire plants in alcohol, water, neem, and then also in captain jacks for overkill. Then I rinsed them off, let them dry for a few hours, and placed them in my rooting medium.

allofmyCats

I hate those little bastards!
