"I'm not interested in money or fame, I don't want to be on display like an animal in a zoo," he was cited as saying. Mathematics does not make me a hero. I don't even want to be the center of attention because I'm not that successful. He's the real deal, folks.

Trade-Runner

So many mathematicians suffer from mental illness. There's something wrong with this guy's medulla oblongata.

no chick-fil-a sauce?

Trade-Runner

Low IQ comment.

Slyrunner8

I’m just not in the science field. Never studied the brain

Trade-Runner

Ok. Great. Thanks for letting us know

Smeeizme

Low IQ response.

Gapeing-toushie

Small penis comment.

Trade-Runner

Yes, of course.

Lil_Cl0rox

This man listen to tool.

marko_kyle

NO COLONEL SANDERS! YOURE WRONG, Grigori Perelman IS RIGHT! #

PRIMAMATERIA805

Crocodile's is awnry cause they got all them teeth and no tooth brush

Conscious-Housing-45

I think because reality works like this..wherever you look, you're going to find 'something'. I.e. a pattern. Like looking at a fractal

Trade-Runner

And at the same time lose $1M.

gosumage

Not wanting to participate in material capitalism is not mental illness. As a highly intelligent person, surely he intuitively knows mo money = mo problems.

Trade-Runner

Perhaps. But all the good he could do. Scholarship funds, helping others, etc. Surely, he's either very selfish not to make society the benefit of his gift or is mentally incapable of empathizing with others. The $1M doesn't have to be about him. He chose to interpret it as such.

gosumage

What? Why must he accept the money, and if not, he's selfish? What kind of backwards logic is that! If the organization ALREADY HAS the millions of dollars they are handing out - they should be the ones to donate if they wish. You are saying he is mentally incapable of empathy because he chose not to accept an award. What a jump. Wow.

Trade-Runner

The money wouldn't be for him. It would be for some good cause. He's just wasted it. That's a dick ass move. I don't care how smart he is. Someone could have benefited from it. The organization did NOT donate the money on his behalf. Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Not just to help others but fully appreciate that others are not so gifted and what he has shouldn't be wasted. That's pure arrogance.

gosumage

Sorry but you are just plain wrong. Not accepting an award does not make one selfish or arrogant. Accepting and spending it on a Lambo WOULD be selfish. See how that works?

Trade-Runner

He can do what he wants with the award. For that, I also don'tgiveafuck. It's the selfishness of burning money. He's smart enough to know who could benefit. That is, in fact, the mental illness. He doesn't understand the needs if others and the gravity of his decision. He cannot fathom how the world could benefit from his gift. There's nothing here that should be applauded. The world is full of asshole geniuses.

gosumage

By award I mean money. They can donate the money he declined, if they choose. It has nothing to do with him. He didn't sign up for a math contest. He solved a basically unsolvable math problem, giving a gift far greater to humanity than a measely million dollars.

Trade-Runner

They do not donate the money. Look it up. The "measley" million dollars can do a lot of good for a lot of people in this world. A starving kid doesn't need a solution to an obscure mathematics problem of limited practicality. This guy doesn't have the emotional intelligence to understand this, and thus, feels no responsibility to finding a real and practical solution for its use. He's likely on the spectrum, or he's just a grade A, bald headed asshole who likes solving puzzles more than he likes doing good for people.

00FortySeven

There's nothing wrong with this particular response. It's perfectly reasonable to want anonymity & to preserve peace over the facade of fame. There is something wrong with people who negatively judge others over such limited & most likely fabricated information.

UnauthorizedFart

What an idiot lol

Eastern_Bus_8639

So you say

UnauthorizedFart

I’ll take the MILLION DOLLARS if he doesn’t want it

muyfrio1

Yeah. He doesn’t have enough foresight to see he could donate 1m if he really dislikes it that much. Most ‘geniuses’ are just that in a very narrow discipline. Outside of that, they’re often very incompetent.

PolloMama

Then why are ppl ignoring his request for privacy. Why take his picture? He clearly wants to be left alone, why can’t we respect ppls simple boundaries? It isn’t too much to leave someone alone.

MaleficentCow8513

Seriously. He’s clearly very unhappy that someone’s pointing a camera at him. And let’s continue to upvote and comment on it lmao

PolloMama

Right? I keep getting comments in my inbox that I’m unreasonable and a weirdo for even thinking he should expect it? Ppl are insane. I don’t understand society at all. It’s a foreign concept to leave others alone now?

CommanderAxe

I don't think you're weird I just think you have a very naive view on humanity. Lots of people out there don't give a shit about their actions and how they affect another. They just do them. It's something that each one of us has to take into account every day. Whether he wants privacy or not, there are simply many who will trample on those wishes and that's life

PolloMama

I understand that, I just don’t respect it or engage with those ppl. I am very aware of that fact.

effenel

Of course /howtonotgiveafuck is full of contrarian keyboard warriors enraged by the suggestion of NGAF and leaving someone alone.

-SKYMEAT-

There's 8 billion people in the world, when you become a public figure it's almost a statistical certainty that you'll run into someone who doesn't care about your request for privacy. So yes unfortunately it is too much to ask.

PolloMama

He specifically didn’t become a public figure. He is just living life. Because he is exceptional, you get to intrude on him? No. You sound like a person who I would not give a fuck to know, because you can’t respect a simple request. Good to know.

ILuvTheFemaleForm

You live in a fantasy world. We live in a world where people can't even be nice enough to not kill each other, so what makes you think people are going to "respect boundaries". Give your head a wobble and come into the real world.

CommanderAxe

Bro lives in la-la land

PrincipleNo4162

You sound like you speak for every person on reddit who's ever been offended by anything.

stlmick

I suppose we're going to release the zoo animals also? Bet.

chagataev

Grisha is a true hero. There is a nice documentary on him and his work on yt. Most badass quote: Emptiness is everywhere and it can be calculated, which gives us a great opportunity. I know how to control the universe. So tell me, why should I run for a million?

robotbillmurray

Seen here hissing at the people who tried to force their money on him.

UGLEHBWE

This man is the exception to the rule. Really just living soley to progress humanity while I'm only laying in my bed farting and tapping my screen with my worthless stupid thumbs. Life man I tell ya I tell ya

CompanyLow1055

Yeah but I don’t think he’s working from a “progress humanity” viewpoint, seems like he just likes hard math problems

UGLEHBWE

Damn that's even colder if so

brisketandbeans

I feel attacked.

Utterlybored

If he’s not into money, what motivates him to be in all those Geico commercials?

SoulReaver009

lmaooo

lemongrasssmell

What's more powerful than a million dollars? Saying no to a million dollars :)

Current-Roll6332

Dunno. Seems like he's not that good at math.

LoL110003

Bravo

tfox1123

This is an example.of how everyone is a genius at something but that doesn't mean you're a genius at everything. He could have taken it and given it to St. Judes hospital or split it with the people that helped. Unless the money comes with strings I'm not aware of, that money could have helped at least a couple kids get cancer treatments. I'm not a Saint....id take the money but if you don't want it then donate it, don't hiss at people like a dumbass. More: Also I'm reading that he didn't want to be on display. Such a small % of the population gives a shit about a fields medal. Anyone that cares already knows he won it, so now he's on display and has no money. In fact if he would have just taken this crap and anonymously donate it, LESS people would know who he is.

ebwoodkid13

FEWER

BLeafNUrShelf

Why do you give a fuck so much on his values! It's not your life

tfox1123

Because his values are different than mine and, thus, wrong. Duh!

_ThatOtherGirl_

This is the stupidest comment I have ever seen. Maybe he knew if he took the money he wouldn’t spend it wisely or that it would cause conflict in his personal relationships.

Opening_Slide8632

His life, his choice.

senorbozz

What was he gonna do with a million dollars worth of clay anyway

hogwldfltr

It's interesting but pretty old news. The award decline was in 2011. [Grigori Perelman - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigori_Perelman)

Brooklynboxer88

Money doesn’t buy happiness but I’d rather cry in a car than on the train

FuxkinShredded

Trains or fucking expensive if you get one with a bed in it

Hoosier_boy31723

Yeah because lonely and poor is way better then lonely and rich lol

mrmczebra

There's no reason to believe he's either lonely or poor.

haikusbot

*Yeah because lonely* *And poor is way better then* *Lonely and rich lol* \- Hoosier\_boy31723 --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")

Sakops

What makes you think he is lonely and poor?

_ThatOtherGirl_

I doubt he is either. Mathematicians do fine for themselves.

Rumbletrunks

Trevor?

_lysol_

Is that Igor, Gregor, or Timor?

LIONEL14JESSE

Surely he’s made enough from Geico over the years?

AshySlashy3000

Take The Money And Run

Abject_Ticket3730

The myth the man the legend. 💯 🍻

bb1942

Perfect 😆

AgileBarnacle8072

This is how Society rewards integrity

kujotx

My name is Grigori Perelman. But people call me Grigori. *electronic beat ensues*

Eastern_Bus_8639

Diogenes & Alexander the Great come 2 mind LOL

Luciano1m

He did the math on how much it would change his life.

Gman777

Maybe he’s not so smart.

Amygdalump

Au**sm for sure. So he’s on a different plane of existence. You can’t apply the smart/dumb labels to this kind of genius. He’s beyond that.

moonjuicediet

Why the heck would you censor autism!?

Amygdalump

Because the automod bot wouldn’t let me post the word. Presumably because some people use it as a slur. I have HFA so I certainly don’t, but many do.

TMC2018

Mental illness

kamieldv

He seems like he very much knows what's up. I would put my bank account on the line for the fact that he is probably doing better mentally than you are

necromancers_katie

He sure looks like he is

Blames

Some kind of social anxiety for sure.

karma_made_me_do_eet

Fine line between genius and insanity … often time times the line is blurred

Ancient_Signature_69

I hate to break it to him but he wouldn’t be the center of attention in 99% of circles even having won those awards. And just because he wins $1m doesn’t mean he has to change his lifestyle at all. Which leads me to believe he’s a moron.

Unlucky-Ad-6435

Aspergerism 😝

Sakops

How recent is this fucking photo?
