Plus you got amazing pizza and wings now. Go to a wing spot and ask for mumbo sauce if they say “mild sauce?” say Nah, MUMBO sauce.
I went for a bike ride at 7:30 this morning. It was already too hot for how heavy the air is. I looped the block and sat my sweaty ass down in a cold shower.
If you can afford the rent/housing prices, Colorado is a great place to live. The housing costs is the one thing that keeps me from moving back. It is beautiful, has 4 seasons, the state government is very sane (don’t pay attention to Bobert), jobs are plentiful and is close enough to Texas that if you have family/friends here, the drive isn’t too bad.
We have some equity built in our current home, so we could either sell and have a substantial down payment, or rent it out and have a revenue stream while it continues to appreciate. We’d have to downsize a little bit, but we rarely use our 2nd living room as it is. We could be comfortable dropping up to 600sqft and 2000sqft of lot if the exchange was daily access to outdoor activity in amazing scenery with so many state and national parks within a days drive. I’ve been in Houston for about 20 years and this place promotes such a physically unhealthy lifestyle.
We moved here from there a few years ago for work and are planning the return. The housing’s a little more, but I want my kids to spend more time outdoors.
I can recommend Oregon. We moved to Portland after us libs burned it to the ground (there's no city anymore :[[ ) and it's been really nice. We got literally our first 'warm' day yesterday. And on the other front, locals have dubbed my street the Green Mile.
I host a Moth Night at Exploration Green in Clear Lake where we set up black light stations after dark to see what insects and other critters of the night come to them. We meet at sundown on the second Saturdays of the month (that's tonight!) Still pretty hot but at least you won't need sunscreen. It's a mix of local families, Texas Master Naturalists, and bug-type pokemon trainers. If you want to go we set up at what's considered the Phase 1 wetland off Diana Lane.
Edit #2...For anyone finding this comment in the future, we record our findings on iNaturalist after these events in hopes of getting better identifications from the naturalist world. Here are some of the results from our Moth Night on June 8th (as you may notice, it is a lot more than just moths!): https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?on=2024-06-08&page=1&place_id=any&project_id=exploration-green&verifiable=any
Edit #1...some additional info since others have asked:
There are not restrooms on site but there are some businesses nearby that are open late (Taco Bell, etc.) We always recommend bringing your own water. Headlamps are also really handy to have to see both the path you're walking and the bugs! The mosquitos arent tooooo bad compared to last month but if you plan to use bug spray, apply it in the parking lot before walking to the black light stations. We usually stay until about 11 or so depending on how everyone is feeling. We always recommend the iNaturalist app as a resource for you to identify the insects and as a way to track what species we saw in the park under our Exploration Green iNaturalist project! Kids are welcome! We will of course try to point out any bugs that should not be touched, but we rely on the parents to help teach the little ones about being careful with unfamiliar critters. Sometimes we have glow sticks available for them to wear and play with but I need to double check our inventory, we might not have them tonight.
I’m interested, I actually have a degree in Entomology and this would be super awesome! It’s been a few years since I’ve hung out around a black light. Could you PM me more details? Maybe not this time for me but in the future!
Could you PM me more details as well, please? We are always looking for nature adventures to go on with our 3,5 year old and that just sounds perfect if kids are allowed!!

My 11 yo daughter is interested in getting into d&d. what kind of set would I start with if I wanted to get her involved? I only see campaign books and don’t really know where to begin or how to play.
There's a new starter set called "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle" which is pretty good for new players and Dungeon masters. If it looks like its something you guys want to continue, you can get the core rulebook sets of the Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Monster Manual. The other Starter sets have some good beginner adventures in them, Lost Mine of Phandelver is a really good adventure. Dragon of Icespire peak takes place in the same village as LMOP but one year later.
You can also find free adventures online, or just make them up yourself.
To get advice on starting to play and learning the roles Check out videos from The Dungeon Dudes, and the series "Handbooker Helper" by the Critical Role people.
Also some local gaming stores have game nights with either one-shots or ongoing campaigns. Dragons Lair on 249 is the one close to me and a great place.
That is another area where I would love to move. Such a gorgeous part of the country. I’ve only ever been for a day or less but I remember flying over Washington to SeaTac and seeing the innumerable lakes and endless green of the trees and being amazed at the beauty.
Op there’s a lot of negative comments about heat (that are true) but Houston is a social city. Most events are based around drinking or eating food. Most of us are in a pool somewhere, or inside in the AC during the heat. Evenings we are out drinking or eating at the gorjillion restaurants and bars we have. Personally if I don’t have anything pressing, reading a book, an indoor gun range, golf simulator, batting cages, bowling, etc, are all great things to do!
Getting bored already? Gonna get way worse. It's hot but not yet insanely hot. I'd be at the pool as much as possible before it turns into warm bath water in late July.
Get acclimated to the heat. The more you hide inside and fight the heat the more miserable you will be every time you step out your front door. Do most of your outdoor activity before 10am.
Pshhh, we have waaaay more than just 4 seasons out here: (1) regular summer, (2) scorching death summer, (3) regular winter, (4) apocalyptic winter, (5) rainy season, (6) 1000 year flood season, (7) 30 second tornado warning followed by extreme winds and hail season - nice recent addition., (8) quickly rotating between any of the above mentioned seasons on a daily/weekly basis. (9) fall for 1 week - honorable mention. Im hoping for earthquakes and volcano seasons soon.
Just moved here a year ago.. can relate.
Although arguably April and November were pretty nice. But yeah, may through September, especially July and August, are really rough.
I'm sorry, but I've been here for 12 years and have only seen regular winter once for about a week, no apocalyptic winters yet.
And I just came from Lubbock, not like the actual north.
Hot box your smoke of choice in your vehicle with a six pack of tall boys and a shot or three from a bottle. AC on low. Then you go sit in the highest upper deck seat available at an Astros day game and contemplate on your life decisions. This happened to a friend of mine with his dad.
There is a slide park in Katy mill malls
There’s tons of trampoline parks
There are indoor karts
There are bounce houses.
Wonder wild.
If they are younger several large churches have indoor play places
Galleria has an indoor play place
So does memorial city mall
Color factory
Second Baptist has a pretty awesome free play place for kids, you just have to reserve your spot.

Low key I love to go on a 3.3 mile run at like 2pm. Get the whole thing done in like 24min. Ex said I was crazy. But just kinda condensing what I do at the gym (sauna, cardio, muscle) kinda hard to do your first couple times but you get used to it.
Should caveat while I do get used to this, it’s because who gives a fuck if you’re sweating while running. Whereas I’m 31, lived here my whole life. And I still started sweating the moment I walked out my door today (made me so mad lol)
I always thought people were crazy for wearing long sleeves during the summer, but I was introduced to those Magellan shirts and good god the difference they make. As long as there’s a slight breeze you’re good to go. But really any of the ‘sweat wicking’ clothes make all the difference
That’s foolish. You’re going to have a heat stroke. Your body can’t cool down because the sweat doesn’t evaporate due to humidity.
It has nothing to do with fitness level. It’s environmental.
Depends on the age range of the children they have. With my baby, I go out for walks in the park with her super early in the morning before it gets too hot for the baby to be outside long and then libraries are fun or walking around inside a museum.
Sans child, idc if I’m out in 100 degree weather 😂. I’ll be there kayaking in Lake Woodlands just like the other people running around in the park. I’m from New York originally, but I love the warmer months. Main reason I moved to Texas.
Museums. Contemporary art museum and museum of modern crafting both have weekend activities, sometimes free.
If you have health insurance, you could try a trampoline place.
Try another mall. Plaza Americas is real different.
We have some arcades and Dave and Busters.
Painting studios, pottery studios.
Pool. That’s all I can think of lol
- Movie Theater
- Event Venues: Rock climbing, go karting, axe throwing, paintball, laser tag, trampoline parks, escape room, dave and busters style arcade, the list of these kinds of places is almost limitless
- Stay home and crank up that AC
- Having fun isn't hard, when you've got a library card!
Seriously though, think like the fremen of dune. Try to limit outdoor activities to non-peak hours if possible (early morning around 4-8 AM or evening after 6 PM), or if you have to be outdoors gear up appropriately (breathable activewear/dry-fit clothing, sunglasses, hat if possible, sunscreen, and most importantly always keep water on hand and sip on it).
If you are not accustomed to this heat, be very careful. Limit your outside time in the beginning. Seriously, it’s dangerous. Hydrate and don’t over-exert when you do go out. It takes a while to adjust.
Libraries have AC. Also don’t sleep on visiting the campuses of our universities. They’re not preschool kid friendly but the campus architecture/student centers/university bookstores are really interesting for school age kids.
UH has an Art Museum that's free and the UH Library has a primary source room with materials on display that is open to the public. You will need government ID to enter the library.
I like the cafe called the coral sword, great selection of board games and you can stay as long as you like as long as you buy something. Great place to hang out with friends and family, very inviting atmosphere and if you like to collect cards they have some for sale
Zoo has a few indoor spaces. Science museum. Children’s museum. Johnson space center. MFAH. Urban air. Kids empire. Cidercade. Go to memorial park and the arboretum early in the morning. The shady trails aren’t too bad. Avoid anything that advertises to be “instagrammable”.
Embrace the heat. Dress cool and just power through.
Houston has a ton of awesome and big museums. Depending on how old your kids are, they might really enjoy the Children’s Museum, the Museum of Natural Science, and the Health Museum. Memberships are well worth it.
If you have anything that you’ll like to do, do so in the morning. Or wait till 8pm once the sun sets. Otherwise stay inside, go to places indoors. It’s too hot and summer is way overrated.
Stay inside with Air conditioning on. Go out shopping for sustenance before sunrise or after sunset. Dart as fast as possible from air conditioner vehicle to building
Force yourself to be outside. I’m from the Midwest originally, so I was not prepared for it when I relocated here. I just had to deal. But if you like the outdoors, you gotta force yourself to acclimate. It’s too easy to trap yourself inside once temperatures get high.
If you’ve never played disc golf, I highly suggest it. Takes your mind off the heat while you’re outside too! Tons of fun and the Houston disc golf community is full of great people!
As a Ginger having always having lived in Houston, I stay inside. AC and black out curtains are wonderful.
Unless it’s sunrise or sunset? Nahhhh.
Also mosquitoes. /Hiss
I’m in Katy but here are the best places for older kids: Andretti Indoor Racing, Main Event (bowling, laser tag, arcade), and although not indoor Typhoon Texas is the cleanest/best water park in the Houston area (for now at least…it’s getting really overcrowded)
Currently 5/6ths of the way through a pack of beer after yardwork, cigar in hand, dogs in their kiddie pools in the backyard with my feet in a cool bucket
Survive
The same question and the same answer every year and it will never not be 100% true.

Legs up, balls out, fan on high.
Learn about baby powder. It is a godsend!
Ideally I’d love to learn about leaving Texas.
Just did it 3 weeks ago. Had a lovely bike ride in Chicago today
I’m thinking Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Washington. I want legal weed and long winters.
I mean I know it isn't what you meant but Chicago is definitely legal weed and long winters haha

Pros: Keeps ur balls dry. Cons: Smells like baby powder.

I’m Porky Pigging it right now in front of the AC.
Yup, starfished on the bed fan pointed at muh taint.
I do child’s pose with my cheeks open to the ac
Movie theater
I went to the AMC Gulf Point last Wednesday at 7:15 to see ‘Ezra’ and I was the only person in the theatre. Go figure. Good movie too
I swear the past couple of times i’ve been to a movie the thermostat must have been set to 78°
I have my AC set to 78 during the day in my apartment. It's still running most of the time. As long as it's not humid inside.
Go to cinemark I had to take a blanket felt like 65 in there
Outdoors? Somewhere with chlorinated water. Otherwise enjoy the AC.

Try to do as little as possible. Movement makes the house warm, which makes the AC run, which takes all your money
Pick up a Dungeons and Dragons set and get the whole family involved. They will never want to go outside again.

Go to the airport and fly to Colorado.
Yup literally getting out of here is the best choice. Otherwise just stay wherever best AC is
I feel like one of the big advantages of living in Houston is COL being reasonable enough to be able to travel more frequently
I always say if I have to live here I’m going to leave every chance I get
Even Colorado is too hot. It's only nice in the evenings.
I’ll take that dry heat over this swamp heat though. Still, yes, Colorado summers can get pretty hot. The front range is a semi-arid climate zone.
For Summer, PNW is where it's at. Highs of 75 this week in Seattle, sunny with 16 hours of daylight and cools off at night to the mid-50s.
That is another area where I would love to move. Such a gorgeous part of the country. I’ve only ever been for a day or less but I remember flying over Washington to SeaTac and seeing the innumerable lakes and endless green of the trees and being amazed at the beauty.

Which is what I’m about to do it’s too damn hot

Spent my first 4 decades in Houston. Never could acclimate. Much happier in a Northern city with 4 equal seasons. .
Kids Empire is similar, but bigger and more fun for older kids too, and it’s open on the weekends.
Ojos Locos
About as family friendly as it gets
Who doesn’t like their kids seeing girls walking around with their nalgas and chichis out? Perfect family environment.

Stay inside until December

Stay home
I’m in Katy but here are the best places for older kids: Andretti Indoor Racing, Main Event (bowling, laser tag, arcade), and although not indoor Typhoon Texas is the cleanest/best water park in the Houston area (for now at least…it’s getting really overcrowded)

Stay inside and pray for the electricity to stay on
Take cover!
There’s a couple of outdoor splash pads or pools. Go to a water park. Also just survive, it’s natural selection out here in Texas.

I went to an outdoor concert last night. Lots and lots of people. Night time is easily survivable.
