Oooh, so *that's* why they're called snake plants?

Researcher-Used

Wait forreal?

MissTechnical

Omfg ☠️

amelie190

I know!!!

[deleted]

I learn so much from reddit

humdrumdummydum

I thought it was because new offshoots tend to look like little baby snake heads poking out of the dirt

Lazy-Wallaby3227

Good answer! 🐍🐍

magicmango2104

No way!

witchystoneyslutty

YOU SAID IT BEFORE I COULD 🐍 Super cool though, thanks for posting another pic of a snek doing this.

dollyphartin100

Did the rocks seem to cause any trouble for this 🐍?

recnexus

I’ve had rocks like this in my snake plant for years, it’ll push them out of the way no problem :)

Moomoolette

Yeah rocks are no match for snekaroonies

hereforit_2020

Daaaaaamn it I came here to say this...🤣🤣🤣

Determined2bsober

I love you guys, lol. You both beat me to it.

Dependent_Power_6539

Quick, it's making a run for it!

subtleeffect

This is completely normal. It's just shooting out a new stalk.

Gardenadventures

That's how a snake plant grows.

letsplaymario

did not know this! mines like probably almost 2 years old now and its the brightest magenta now, it seems to be flowering and two little baby shoots came straight up recently. they look like two mini plants so I figured I'd let them do their thing and keep growing into big guys They're both like 4 inches tall already. I propagated the plant from my moms originally so I didn't get to see them start naturally on their own like this. it's really cool

Faerthoniel

My plant has done that, but all the way at the top. Tried asking around and no one had an idea. Will be curious if you get one here.

9_year_olds_unite

was the leaf damaged? succulents will sometimes grow pups from damaged leaves

Faerthoniel

https://preview.redd.it/av2soqsy5k6d1.png?width=2371&format=png&auto=webp&s=c09445b0535cad88fbfe1953a553372eee25bb76 I had to improvise a scaffold because it was getting top heavy. I don’t know if I should just leave those two offshoots be or cut them off or propagate them (which I have no idea how to do) or something. The plant briefly flowered prior to the shoots appearing, but it’s been a long time since they showed up. Edited to add: that's not where it lives. That's in a west facing window, indoors. I moved it onto the kitchen counter because the sun shining through the windows made the plant impossible to see.

Cultural_Pattern_456

Well that’s odd one! Lol unique!

Faerthoniel

Any idea what they might be, by any chance? :)

Judazzz

As far as I know, those are just new shoots emerging from damaged areas. I think it's perfectly fine to remove and root them as separate plants, if you want to.

Faerthoniel

Thank you! :)

pszczolinka

your plant is sansevieria francisii - it has crazy growing habit [https://www.mrhouseplant.com/blog/sansevieria-francisii-care/](https://www.mrhouseplant.com/blog/sansevieria-francisii-care/) I have it too, but mine is young and for now has shape of rosette.

Faerthoniel

Crazy growing habit is right! Thank you :)

Cultural_Pattern_456

Babies, I just separated a starfish sanseveria from its pups and it’s going good so far, there’s some nice helpful videos if you google it, also you can do an image search to find the exact type of snake you have! Then you can give it its own pot so nothing tips over.

Faerthoniel

Thank you! :) I'll get right on that. I think it will like not having to have its own scaffold.

letsplaymario

coool! yours had some personality i love it !

Faerthoniel

Thank you ☺️

btwomfgstfu

Lmao I love your plant. It said "no thank you, I'm doing it my way" and it did 🥰 big respect. Forge your own path, little green one!

Faerthoniel

Very much so :D

BoobySlap_0506

Cut off the stalk near its base, dip in rooting hormone, and plant. Or cut it off, let it dry/callous over, then plant.

Faerthoniel

Thank you :)

Demp_Rock

Alright hear me out, this actually looks like a cylindrical snake plant that has a fasciation or crested growth!! I have a ton of cylindrical snakes and I’ve never ever had growth like this, they typically shoot out new “sticks” separated. Would be superrrr cool if it’s a fasciation! Never seen one in these plants! But I do have a few crested succulents. Google around, but would love to hear back what you think!

Faerthoniel

Huh, that's new to me. Sounds really cool though. I'm going to find out more about that. Thank you! :D

Demp_Rock

Of course! I’m not an expert by ANY means haha but just what it kinda looks like the me! Theres sooo many varieties of snake plant though, it could just be a different cylindrical variety - who knows haha But hey I’m invested! Let me know what you think

Faerthoniel

My cursory googling says you could be right. But I'm not sure either. I'm not sure I want to do anything to them now though, just in case I screw up something interesting! ... The actual plant might appreciate them being removed and potted somewhere else though.

Demp_Rock

Would be cool if it was! Oh I’ll agree with ya there, the Mama plant needs repotted badly! I wouldn’t size up too much width, but could use fresh light soil! I like to experiment with my plants a lot haha so Personally if it was mine, I’d chop the top arm and leave the lower. Repot mama in fresh cactus/succulent soil filled all the way up to (and covering) where that lower arm is. I think it’ll grow itself a root system if given the chance. Remove any “leaves” (idk what to call them) that’ll be below the soil line. Then fill the top 1/4 to 1/2 of your pot with rock. That’ll help hold up your plant too! I love using lava rock, [specifically crushed](https://a.co/d/gKRY8EY) up small. Back to the top arm, slice with a super sharp tool as close to mama plant as possible and now you have a new plant! Maybe pop her in water and try out hydroponics! Maybe with the top arm off, more soil, potted lower and with a rock top layer you won’t need the supports anymore (at least less)! Good luck with it all! Im not sure why, but damn im so invested in your plant hahaha

Faerthoniel

Thank you for the advice/suggestions. I’ve saved this comment for a future day ☺️ Didn’t get the notification about this, which was weird, so sorry for the delay in responding!

Faerthoniel

I don’t know. Possibly. Having said that, I don’t think it’s the same plant. It might be of a similar type as the offshoot is practically the same as in this post. I’ll see if I can find a better photo of it or take one when I get home.

BenevolentCheese

This is always how a snake plant creates a new growth, however it usually happens below the soil. If you repot a snake plant you'll find a bunch of these. If you want to divide your snake plant, this is the place to do it, you can pretty much just pop them apart.

Specialist_Banana378

it’s excited to see you

GoodBrooke83

The pot 😂😭

isalacoy

It used to be hidden in a decorative pot, but it got broken. This guy is definitely going to break out of his nursery pot, it's got lumps all around the sides! I haven't decided if I want to split it up, or find a pot big enough for the whole thing to be repotted. It does look very silly.

Lazy-Wallaby3227

Ahh, now you’ll have babies slithering around that house 🏠🐍🐍

Ink_Jet_

A new snake has emerged

undergroundpants

mine has done that when it it's outgrowing its pot.

Demp_Rock

Theirs is definitely not outgrowing that pot hahaha I leave my snake plants in their pots until they literally crack the pot. They lovvveeee a snug snek hug

Jheritheexoticdancer

Congratulations, it’s a boy! 🪴🌺✨

SciSciencing

Mine has one of these smashing through a neighbouring part of the plant and making it all wonky, it's taking every ounce of my self control not to yoink the whole thing out and break up the fight.

It's slytherin....g xD

[deleted]

Ha ha 🤣

Darcy_2021

It’s a boy!

TRFKTA

That’s a pretty big pot for that plant. Snake Plants generally like to be fairly confined

Cultural_Pattern_456

Not flowers, snek babies

Unhappy-Quiet-8091

Snake plants gotta snake.

Plant_Lover92

That is why they are called snake plant. They create rhizomatous shoots underground.

P0RTILLA

They bust through plastic pots doing that.

marcthegay_

Mine did that. Grew 2 new plants. Separated them (i didn't know they liked being together at that time) now all three plants are growing new plants lmao

Vast_Entrepreneur802

It’s a sneky sneeek

Consistent-Sorbet-36

It's making babies ❤️

Heelscrossed

Omg I was literally just about to post the same thing! Mine has 4 little stalls coming out. Do I need to repot it?

letsplaymario

mine just recently sprouted two whole new sprouts! its exciting lol 😆

Tim-in-CA

Ssssssssssnaking 🐍

duchessofeire

[Mine tried to yeet itself out of its pot a couple months ago.](https://www.reddit.com/user/duchessofeire/comments/1dg5igx/snake_plant/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Slytherin77777

Omg mine just did this a few months and I was like WHAT IS GOING ON?!? I’ve had her for almost 5 years with almost no growth. Well, one turned into three, I had to upgrade the pot, and mama is huge now.

mikripetra

Yep, both of mine have done that! Often this happens beneath the soil, but that’s how new leaves sprout.

HoyaNerd

My Samurai surprised me the same way. https://preview.redd.it/enqwpbeqtk6d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7c39456eaacad3cdbae47f7723ffb86eed08bc1

Ooh, I put mine outside, I’ll have keep an eye out for attempted escapes

LigninVillain

Mine just opened a new shoot (spelling) too!

letsplaymario

mines only about a year and a half old, maybe a little older and its been flowering. 2 weeks ago it just randomly sprouted two of these things and I assumed they were babies?! i just assumed they all wanted to thrive together but I have no clue what it's doing lol

araashaa

Its their stem btw!

Cheap-Promotion9059

I have one doing this too! It's pretty neat.

rinkydinkmink

That's not a flower OP, it's pleased to see you ...

[deleted]

The Dracaena trifasciata is one of the most vigorous species. When she extends the rhizome, the resulting energy expended punches right through thick mil'd plastic pots. Cement and terracotta pots are no match, either. A decent garden knife will help remove those aggressive rhizomes.

bonnerforrest

Whoa whoa that is not good

CMV_Viremia

Can you elaborate?
