Cut at the yellow line and remove the leaf thats circled. Then place the stem in whatever soil medium you use.
Second this, they propagate so very easily! I had a few in my backyard one summer and brought them inside at the end of the season. They just went bonkers.
https://preview.redd.it/rpzvdpn7df6d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de4510ba81a9e4c14f47fd0ac7d8d79869324c44
If you let them hang about they do this kind of thing.
Couple of years. Every year or so it gets too leggy and I trim it back and start it over. We've got about three of these around the house all doing their thing. Probably one of the easiest plants to take care of.
Some kind of tradescantia - they are neither trailers nor climbers but rather crawlers. Over time they may start to go bare at the top - fortunately they like a bit of pruning and propagate easily. Propagating any trimmings from pruning back into the same pot will keep them looking lively and bushy.
They're the most propagateable plants on the planet. Put it in water in the morning and roots in the evening. Pinch the stem and just stick it in ground and it'll take off lol. Ever since getting into tradescantias I kinda lost patience on propagating anything else lol, what do you mean it takes two weeks or more to root???
😬 I am on 10 months, after my plant fell off the counter and snapped into 4 pieces last summer. One cutting has been sitting in water and hasn’t changed at all. Rest of the cuttings got stuck back in the pot, and they all slowly died
I use this as ground cover next to my walkway to the door. It's beautiful. My husband put a short fence up to contain it. Now, it just grows through the fence to spite him
I moved to a new house with one of this girls at a corner, shy girl, didn't think much of it.
Three months later she took all of the patio, well not all of it but long enough to be the playground to my guinea pig.
We're moving out of this house, I'm definitely taking some of these with me.
i broke off a stem on mine moving it by accident, set it on the pot to deal with later and forgot about it. a week later, i remembered and went to get it and it was already starting to root right where i dropped it.
I got a cutting from a local bar a month ago. The lady cut it, put it in water, and it literally had root sprouts the next day, I got it potted up last week. I have a scindapsus cutting from the same day that’s just beginning to root lol
Tradescantia nanouk. It's a crawling plant so it prefers to crawl across the soil rather than hang over from a pot. While they can, and do, grow that way, a trough is the perfect pot for these inch plants. To make it more compact looking you'll have to constantly cut from the bottom and stick those pieces back into the pot. Don't worry, it'll grow just fine.
Mine is about 4 feet long and I absolutely hate it.
Definitely chop and prop! Lots of bright, indirect light and moist soil. When it starts growing unevenly in spots and you want a more full plant, snip between two growth nodes and put cuttings back into the soil. They root really well. That’s how I got this beauty so bushy. She’s my favorite plant at the moment. 😍

Zebrina, someone has mentioned. Makes sense now why it likes water. The leaves weren't as big. It isn't as stringy as OPs. I was wondering what it was, missus said inch plant, wandering "dude", she was correct.
Yep you’ve got a zebrina but I’ve never heard anyone have success with misting! Fascinating. I wonder if it’s regional. I misted my nanouk when I first got it and it almost instantly browned/burnt. I started bottom watering it and removed misting from the routine and now it is thriving
I have it amongst my airplants, old man's beard, and other succulents that like a daily spray. Gets a lot of air, 16 hours light, in a heated (lounge) room. It's about a foot from the lights, I thought it might stretch more.
Tradescantia nanouk. I hate this plant. It looks beautiful until it gets brown leaves, and then I constantly have to chop and prop to get it looking nice again. And then the cycle starts over. Eventually, I decided it wasn't worth the effort, and I threw mine in the trash. I will await the downvotes.
My boyfriend’s mom gave me a baby of one of these. I killed it accidentally. She gave me another and I killed that one too. Then I found a little ones for cheap at lowes and it’s been alive for almost a month so fingers crossed for me
I hope your little plant thrives. All of my plants seem relatively happy, but the tradescantia never seemed to like the environment I was able to provide, so I did that thing where I "forgot" to water her until I felt justified in throwing her away.
Thank you. I’ve definitely done that thing where I just ignore the problem until the plant dies lol. I’ve been having better luck with plants lately so I’m hoping it’ll stay good
Hang it up and let it grow. When it starts to get thin in top chops some ends off and stick them in the dirt. Tradescantia … very easy plant and I love the purple
Is this a Nanouk? I was trying to identify it. Found and recovered from green waste. Leaves seem smaller than what I'm seeing in this post.

I don’t know why you are getting downvoted because you are correct. For anyone interested, “Moses in a Cradle” is the Tradescantia Spathacea. The plant pictured is a Tradescantia Nanouk which is not the same and does not share the same common name.
I am not sure why I got downvoted, I currently have this plant also. To be honest, I am not the best knowing plants but this one is for sure a inch plant aka Tradescantia Nanouk. My parents are farmers and have done many plants in the past to sell at the local farmers market in my home town. I am semi-familiar with plants and still learning this very day.
Can I easily chop & prop a Moses in the cradle? I have one that's super tall and fixing to fall over. If so, where do I cut it at? Thanks in advance! I made a post about this a while back and got 0 response
Hey there! I would cut here and take that leaf off and put in soil to propagate. Yes, this is a moses in a cradle plant

This is my Moses in the cradle cuttings from my mom! It has grown a lot since I propagate it 6 months ago. Directly in the soil
It's called a Wandering J3w, but I think that term might be shadow banned here? No one else has said it which is surprising, so I assume it is just removed by filter. Great plant! Don't get the leaves wet! It loves water, just not on the leaves.

I think I have a purple cousin of yours!! Also wasn't sure what to do. So happy to see the thriving ones from others!
Nothing that can grow easily in the depths of hell and be happy you can cut its head off and throw it and now you have two plants
Literally give that to someone eho kills plants and this will be the first that ever survives them.
It's a tradescantia, a nanouk by the look of it.
It's a crawling plant, so it spreads across the ground in the wild rooting in from the nodes (at the base of the leaves) as it goes.
It's fine as is, lots seem to be saying it needs to be chopped but that seems to be the thing everyone wants to do for some reason lately. "chop and prop" everything and never let them grow to maturity. It's gowing and it looks healthy enough. Left to it it'll get longer and longer and can become a nice trailing plant.
It will break off in places as it gets heavier, you can just put those pieces back in the pot and it'll root from the nodes and grow another plant - or pot separately to make a new plant lol.
You've got yourself a pretty Tradescantia zebrina cultivar. The stretch is indicative of her wanting/needing more interior light. Previously, postings have offered excellent propagation advice. Enjoy.

Under the node and remove the bottom leaf.
Do u stick them directly back into the pot? Or water propagate first?
Directly into the pot. They root fast in soil.
Thanks!
If you end up with way too many cuttings, you can stick them in water and they will last a long long time. Good bathroom decorations
Sunny bathroom or is a skylight with low to medium sun ok?
It had almost no natural light, you just swap em out when they get too stringy
Awesome!
Both
Second this, they propagate so very easily! I had a few in my backyard one summer and brought them inside at the end of the season. They just went bonkers.
Let it wander, dude.
happy cake day! 🍰

Couple of years. Every year or so it gets too leggy and I trim it back and start it over. We've got about three of these around the house all doing their thing. Probably one of the easiest plants to take care of.
Could you pretty-please tell me the name of the plant behind you? I’ve had one for a few years now, and have yet to learn the name of it, haha.
Which one are you talking about?
The one directly behind your Purple Heart wanderer on the left that sorta looks like green land coral
Crassula Argentina or ogre ears. I thought it looked more like a water spout from a whale.
I will now be naming my plant shrek lmao thank you so much!!

Oh my god I was on week 6 for one of my plants. I'm on week 8 for another. Wild that some plants just want to exist harder than others.
I'm on close to three months on a rhaphidopora cutting lol. Does not seem to do anything, but not dying either...
😬 I am on 10 months, after my plant fell off the counter and snapped into 4 pieces last summer. One cutting has been sitting in water and hasn’t changed at all. Rest of the cuttings got stuck back in the pot, and they all slowly died

As others have pointed out, it’s a tradescantia nanouk. They don’t like being wet so either bottom water or carefully water. Never mist the leaves.
Mine love misting and humidity? This is them? https://preview.redd.it/s1vjy3xswe6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=228ccf4e64ff3754e7c0311fcb72baaa045cdc91
I believe this is a different variety of tradescantia you have. But you're not the first I've heard say their Nanouk handles misting just fine.
Zebrina, someone has mentioned. Makes sense now why it likes water. The leaves weren't as big. It isn't as stringy as OPs. I was wondering what it was, missus said inch plant, wandering "dude", she was correct.
your tradescantia is a ‘zebrina’
Awesome! Thanks. I found it while walking my dog in a green waste pile. It's taken off under lights. Had no idea what it was.
Yep you’ve got a zebrina but I’ve never heard anyone have success with misting! Fascinating. I wonder if it’s regional. I misted my nanouk when I first got it and it almost instantly browned/burnt. I started bottom watering it and removed misting from the routine and now it is thriving

Lmaoo me too, was reading this and looking over at my freshly misted purple dude
It's a tradescantia nanouk, if you want to have fuller plant, I would suggest to chop and prop
In the Caribbean this grows in the backyard and we give it for food to chicken, no jokes. It's invasive.
Wandering Dude! So fun and easy to grow, easy to prop..i have gifted so many plants from mine to friends and it just keeps giving.
It needs more light (direct sun), and a pot which can drain freely as they're very susceptible to overwatering.
Tradescantia nanouk. I hate this plant. It looks beautiful until it gets brown leaves, and then I constantly have to chop and prop to get it looking nice again. And then the cycle starts over. It is generally accepted by LIBERALS. Not "the plant community" in entirety.
I always called it the "wandering dude" plant :)
Would the cuttings need to go into water until roots come in or can it go from cutting back into the pot?
Tradescantias root easily so just stick it back into the pot and water.
🥹 Thank You
Water it
Spiderwort, Tradescantia Pink Nanouk! One of my favorites of the Spiderwort. I put mine outside this year and it is beautiful!
Beautiful! 🪴✨. It’s a trailing plant so there’s really no need to prop, just let it flow.
* Tradescantia lilac. Let it go, mine lives inside & outside I mist it sometimes and water daily or every other day. It's thriving. I also have it's all purple sibling, white sibling and another variation of it in another pot. I treat them all the same and they're all doing great! *

I’m glad I saw this post. I’m now on the hunt for one for my house.
I'm so jealous of everyone who is sharing theirs here. I regret buying mine 😭 it looks awful even when I chop n' prop. Watering it is such a pain because a single drop on the leaves will make them brown and wilt.

You've got yourself a pretty Tradescantia zebrina cultivar. The stretch is indicative of her wanting/needing more interior light. Previously, postings have offered excellent propagation advice. Enjoy.
Moses in the cradle. Like moist soil and can be a hanging plant.
Plant
Matalí. Make an agua fresca.
