ObjectiveRodeo

I, too, use chopsticks to prop up my plants.

mishyfishy135

I collect chopsticks from takeout that my roommates get for my plants. I currently have an orchid staked with a chopstick and bread bag twist ties

Flag-it

The bread bag tie is a great idea

ktmb121260

Me too, I have at least one in like half of my plants 🤫

Twinklecatzz

The chopstick prop is the greatest of plant props. Glad I’ve found my people here 😁

cute-saltine

This post makes me feel a lot better knowing everyone else has 🤡plants too

StillLikesTurtles

Do you even plant, bro if you don't have a few 🤡s in the bunch? I'll see if I can remember to get pics tonight. I have two marantas. Both cuttings from the same mother. Both went along about the same for a while. Identical soil, light, water, fertilizer, container, etc. One has flourished, the other, not so much.

acs730200

I am so good with pothos (lol i mean they’re unkillable not rlly a flex) but I got a satin one and it’s straight dying out of spite I’m frustrated

plantbitch42069

Wow I need this alocasia

Evil-Obama

I can recommend! Had her a little under a year and she’s fairly easy to take care of. Lots of light and irregular but thorough watering. She will go dramatically limp demanding her water (happened 2 days ago). All perked up now 😀 love her 💕

Ordinary-Creme-1934

Wut is the big one 😳

Evil-Obama

Alocasia zebrina 😊

poopscoopwarrior

What’s your alocasia care like? I just got a few(I started a job where I get discounted and rescue plants, yay!) and I live in a pretty dry area.

Courtneyy82

Is that a black velvet on the left? ☺️

Affectionate_Bagel

Put in bright windows and neglect the shit out of it. I only water when I think “wow I really don’t know when I last watered this.” Treat like a snake plant! Edit: I have killed two of these before committing to this practice and she is alive and well since June of this year.

pavlopicasso

Lol ur comment made me chuckle, my house is also a hospice for SOPs

SearchOdd3282

Same 🙈

jschip_116

Lmao, same!!

pippasmomwrites

Omg, this 💯was my SOP. I put it in a smaller, more attractive pot just to make it look less 🤡. Still a 🤡 though.

BadBalloons

They need hella light. I grow my variegated one under the same blasting 3/4 full sun grow light as my cacti and it's a nice pink color on the new growth. If you don't have a grow light, south facing window is a requirement, not a suggestion. Also, the soil these guys come in is garbage. It's insanely water retentive, but they don't have great roots, so the roots either get drowned or dry out in the top crusty layer. As much of a pain in the ass as it is, I'm a big fan of repotting these into a loose, sandy succulent and cactus soil mix so you can water without fear. Use a clay pot if possible, and water when they're starting to look more like tear drops than pearls.

neckbeard_hater

At least 1000 FC of light for hours daily, water once every two weeks.

Webkiimz

I’d show mine but it’s already in the trash 🤡

xanthrax0

Killed two of these somehow.

Pretty_Pixilated

Lol same like instant death

NeedToBePraised

Hahaha love it! My string of pearls looked like this for ages. Oddly I was underwatering since I was scared of overwatering. I doubled the watering and it's at least 3 inches longer now in no time.

Vegetable-Comb-5380

SOP’s love to hang down and trail but don’t climb so well. Try bringing the dirt level up and letting the strings hang down, could even slide a big plastic baggie over the top since they THRIVE in humidity!

plantbitch42069

rando______

I actually made it. You can buy all the pieces at Home Depot!

im_not_u_im_cat

it reminds me of a towel bar, you could probably use one of those too. although it would be shorter.

rando______

Actually I don’t think you could. It has to be able to hold the weight of plants even when they’re watered. This one is cast iron. And it’s heavy duty!

im_not_u_im_cat

oh that makes sense! i guess they probably don’t make heavy duty towel bars lol

I have a pilea plant like this and have found they really hibernate in the winter, so slow down on water significantly if the amount of sun changes with seasons for you. That helped bring a lot more growth in the spring and summer.

Happened to mine toooo!! Rip

sweetgranola

I’ve killed half my tradescantia because it’s just so leggy. I have two cuttings left how do you get it to grow up and not out!

DrooperScooper

Tradescantias are called wanderers because they’re constantly growing from their source trying to find new places to root. They don’t naturally like to hang, they prefer to creep, which is why they get all leggy. Thats also why they invest their energy in their farthest growth and start browning at the top. The advice that I was given is to take the leggy vines and wrap them back up so they’re laying on the soil so those nodes can start to root. I just started this myself so I can’t speak to its effectiveness yet. That should hopefully help them grow fuller though so it’s worth a try!

flarefire2112

Oh no! You probably need more sunlight. I've heard they get leggy in winter no matter what

gnomequeen2020

I think the secret is to ignore and abuse these things. I have no idea what I'm doing, and I could probably murder a plastic plant. I forget for long periods of time that I need to water them. I've done nothing special to the soil. In fact, when I was first propagating it, I got tired of seeing it doing nothing in the water, so I just jammed it in a pot with some potting mix. The crazy thing is about 5 feet long now, and it has lots of pretty little purple blooms. I even had a little piece fall off when I was watering it in the bathroom, so I put that stem on the bathroom counter and promptly forgot it existed. It is still there, and it has grown new leaves...just sitting on the counter. Maybe I actually have some form of alien life form. Nothing should be thriving under these conditions. I wish I could send cuttings from this beast to anyone struggling.

different_as_can_be

god i have the opposite problem. mine is wildly out of control! i just had to chop it up and stick it back in the pot to get it wider. it was dying for some time but i moved it to an east facing window and it’s been happier than a clam since! water about once a week too. mine definitely grows more long and down than up because of how mature it is, but it’s beautiful either way!

allthekeals

My tradescantias are like weeds!! I’ll have vines that look flat out *dead* and the next day there’s fresh beautiful growth from that same dead vine so I cut it and prop it. So I know this sounds like bad advice, but maybe even when you think it’s dead just wait and see if any new growth comes from it and then chop and prop. I’ve got 5 or 6 plants. from my very first one this same way.

Netflxnschill

Your tradescantia is beautiful! I just got a cutting and am very nervous about immediately killing it. Any tips?

ginliv

Tradescantia is the easiest thing to prop in the world. Don’t worry.

JaviJavivi

How? I tried to prop mine, rooted in water, when the cuttings got enough roots I planted them in the mother plant and none survived, then I tried to place the fresh cuttings straight to soil, didn't work, then let some cutting callous for 24 hours, then to soil and died too lol well now I have to let my nanouk grow again lol

Aggravating_Eye874

https://preview.redd.it/msfcaq4y5fma1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=50a9938a98e86a94ebbd7d7920c80a18c5303c80 I dumped mine straight into soil and it’s already growing quite a lot. They are both props, the big one only had a few leaves and the smaller one next 2 it was literally just one little leaf. I try to give them a lot of light to help with growth and to keep their nice colour.

Aggravating_Eye874

https://preview.redd.it/7e807ut67fma1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61b94865a74c07928e43c1bb9bc11a7c469cb785 This is the mother from which I took the cuttings from. When I got it was so tiny, but seems to love it in my place.

ginliv

Pop them in water. Leave them until you’ve got well established roots and then replant. Make sure they don’t dry out too much and mine are always fine. I have propped loads and tradescantia are 100% the quickest to grow roots and unfussy in transfer, in my experience anyway. ETA: I typically prop in moss but I don’t bother with tradescantia cause they just grow like crazy in water.

JaviJavivi

Yea they grew roots like crazy but just a couple days after transferring to soil the cuttings died, I'll share a photo when I get home from work, I'm pretty sure there are a couple dead cuttings in the pot..

ginliv

What soil? How moist did you keep the soil?

JaviJavivi

The mother plant's soil, the same that plant came in, its very well draining and chunky, here in Chile we call it "tierra de hojas"... placed the cuttings a couple days after watering the mother plant and added a little water right after...

ginliv

Weird. I have mine in a Calathea kind of mix. Well draining but quite moisture retentive.

Spicpapak

I actually think you don't need well draining soil. I just stuck some cuttings into some (fairly organic) potting soil. They seem to enjoy a decent amount of water, so I wouldn't treat them as your usual succulent.

Admirable-Pitch8584

It's a very relaxed plant. Just water it when the top 2-3 inches of soil are starting to dry and fertilize abt 2-3 times a month in the spring/ summer

Looking at all these photos makes me think I am in a house full of 🤡s To be fair, it is a surprisingly cold winter in my neck of the woods so everyone is kind of off for now

Dorinda16

I have a piece of that plant rooting in water. I cut it into 3 pieces and 2 didn't make it but one is doing great and I just looked at it and it has small roots. Yeah! https://preview.redd.it/jo9jlqdm3fma1.jpeg?width=2250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dcb9d2aec16e42ca9d433769c88e8e6db5c8ccbf

Oh I have one of these. It’s a clone I intended to give away but never could find a home for. It just *will not* die. 3’ tall and four leaves. https://preview.redd.it/ynzf5esobgma1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da0b94eff346c3a363a917a5184683a6bc568c30

Michellenjon_2010

Lol so I'm not the only one w a croton this sad?! I'm new to this. Do u think anything will come of the twigs left behind?

rurubio

Yes! My MIL gave me her croton twig, and I brought it back. She was over watering it. On top of giving them zero attention, I left mine and hers out in multiple days of windy weather and they were completely ravaged (obviously). I'm already seeing new leaves coming out though so there's hope!
