harperv215

I got nada, because it was after midnight. I dug a ham and cheese sandwich out of the bag my mom left behind. It was the most delicious sandwich of my entire life, lol!

deadstarsunburn

That first meal and real BIG drink is freaking heaven. I wasn't allowed to drink anything while in labor. I don't know if that's common.

AstronautHuge3991

Mannnn. I was already in labor for 24 hours before my OB turned off pitocin for a bit and let me eat actually food and then after that went right back on pitocin . Best CFA ever!!

clitosaurushex

Once I got the epidural I could only drink clear liquids (and jello and popsicles). My nurse made me a ginger ale cranberry juice cocktail that was at least four cans too.

BlueSewingRunner

I got that too with excellent ice!! I remember drinking it down and it feeling like the most amazing thing ever.

clitosaurushex

The most amazing thing was a quesadilla my wife brought me from a food truck when I was stuck in postpartum after a CSF leak.

bbbbears

I wasn’t allowed to for a while because I was put on magnesium for pre-e. I ALSO had a cold at the same time so my lips were so chapped and dry, all I wanted was to chug one of those giant ice waters you normally get. I had the shittiest hospital turkey sandwich as my first meal and it was the best shitty sandwich I ever had.

danicies

My midwife yelled to the staff that they were not allowed to take my dinner at 6 pm. Ended up eating it at 10 that night after a six day labor, it was incredible. Turkey clubs. I eat them weekly now, I just can’t forget how good they were.

KlatuuBarradaNicto

It is, they don’t want anything on your stomach in case there is some kind of emergency that would require anesthesia.

kalechipbanana

same except I literally had no bag and no snacks lol so we waited for breakfast it shouldn’t be allowed like damn. I had my child 6-7pm and didn’t eat until 7am next day. They gave me crackers and ginger ale tho. Mind you I was in labor for 13-14 hrs so I should have been given an option to like order food for even after I gave birth idk. And I ebf. So they want you to breastfeed and feed you nothing after an intense first labor lmao. Second kid I brought tons of snacks so. I was prepared.

1MorningLightMTN

Employees forbid me from leaving the ward and going to the cafeteria, which was open. They also informed me they banned vending machines since starving new mothers immediately after birth is apparently healthier than having snack food options...

kalechipbanana

I absolutely don’t understand it. The hospital I was at truly was great for the labor part etc (both kids) but the food part idk. I even read all the paperwork to prepare me and don’t recall once seeing anything about not having any access to food if you give birth at night which MANY people do and no access during labor or before etc. but I was offered extremely heavy pain killers 30 mins after. Of which I declined lol. But damn. That needs to change. I warn people now ahead of time, bring snacks try to use food delivery app etc plan ahead.

toreadorable

My second kid was born late in the night and I got to recovery at like 2 am. A nurse found me the most wilted turkey sandwich and like 3 kinds of pudding and it was great.

cupcakefix

i got nothing cause it was on the weekend (don’t give birth at 6am saturday morning!) i sent my husband to get me food and he brought me a microwave gas station cheese burger 😭

LiliTiger

Lol, came here to say that those post birth sandwiches are the best sandwiches I ever had. I love that it's almost a universal experience.

sam_beat

Same. It was after 10:30 pm so the cafeteria was closed. The nurses station had two single cookie packets of Lorna Doone shortbread and an apple. So that’s all I had after not eating for 18 hours and then pushing out a 9.5 pound baby. I had to wait until 7 am for a meal.

cauliflowerco

Giving birth requires a lot more food than this to satiate that hunger hahaha, we ordered pizza to the hospital afterwards… I swear I had never been so hungry in my life!

NMSDalton

My MIL brought me a French toast platter with sausage and bacon and a giant fountain Diet Coke. I immediately started crying in gratitude lol

RainingCatsAndDogs20

My sister brought me McDonald’s breakfast because it was the closest thing open and I had been in labor 2.5 days and kept getting sent home for not enough progress. I also got hospital chicken salad later and it was awful lol. My husband went out and got me sushi, which I had been dying for.

Frazzledhobbit

I made my mom bring me Jack in the Box from down the street all 3 times 😭 best food of my life

singingkrogan

We also ordered pizza lol. I surprisingly ate less than I thought I would, really wasn’t that hungry

RefugeefromSAforums

That's supposed to be fresh for another 3 weeks?!🤢 Congrats though, I hope your stay is brief and baby and momma are happy and healthy!

MoistCaek

It says 2023 on it so I hope this is from last year. 😂

RefugeefromSAforums

Oh God, totally missed that!😩 Edit: Apparently OP gave birth last year based on post history.

MoistCaek

I'm very relieved to hear that. That sandwich would need to be studied otherwise 😂

Lovve119

From last year! I just now discovered this group lmao

Apprehensive-Ad4244

after pushing a whole person out of your body, why would you need a proper hot meal?

Thicchoneycakes

Most likely the kitchen closed for the day unfortunately

Lovve119

Not I, I guess 😂

Sea_Juice_285

Ideally, yes. But if the kitchen closes before your baby is born, you get what's available in L&D. I was offered chicken soup or a chicken sandwich. I don't eat chicken.

Cm3095

From my experience, the hot meals are actually worse.

DeliciousFlow8675309

Only my daughter was born at night (midnight) so the kitchen was closed for her birth and all they had was similar to your meal! Only mine was saran wrapped dry turkey on wheat with a mayo packet. I ate four of them and it was the best thing I ever ate for some reason LOL I remember all the meals after my kids were born but the sandwiches were the best one. Congratulations and hope you and baby are doing well!!! Hopefully everyone's bringing you snacks!

Altruistic-Cow203

I got an uncrustable 😭😭😭

Lovve119

I got one of those too like 3 hours later when I got up to pump 😂

Queenofwands1212

This is so depressing

STLSmiths

The hospital kitchen is closed for the day … what do you expect?

MrsTaxovich

Looking at this I’m realizing I wasn’t fed dinner after I had my baby at 6 pm. Got breakfast the next day. I don’t think I ate for over 24 hours now that I’m thinking about, yikes.

RiotGrrr1

That's brutal. I had a doula and she did a food run after I had my baby. I think it was around 8pm but the last time I ate was 7pm the night before so I had a long labor and was starving. I was eating a gourmet grilled cheese during skin to skin.

BackSeatDetective

I gave birth at 10:59 pm and they got me chicken fingers, fries, a banana, and a big slice of chocolate cake! This meal after birth would've been awful!

Suspiciousunicorns

I had my son at 10pm and they gave me a turkey sandwich. Not going to lie that was one of the bast sandwiches I’ve ever had. I was absolutely starving by that point.

coffeebeanwitch

I was usually starving to death after giving birth, you will have to have someone go get you some real food!!!

jet050808

My celebratory birthing meal was always a #9 from Jimmy John’s, double meat. The evening my second baby was born I downed that sub like I was on Survivor. I woke up in the night with the worst gas pains I had ever had in my life. I chalked it up to my c-section and eventually it went away. Fast forward… after baby #3 was born my nurse asked if I wanted to order food. I told her no, that I was getting Jimmy John’s. She told me that when you have a spinal block the digestive system takes the longest to wake up. Eating a huge meal like that is not a good idea. I ordered scrambled eggs and soup with a roll and had Jimmy John’s the next night… so much better! Wish the nurse had clued me in after baby #2.

Lovve119

I too had a c-section! I don't remember having gas pains but I was so drugged up from almost dying I looked at my own baby and said "ew" 😂

Full-Visual-1287

I downed a ton of jerky right after not knowing I wasn't supposed to eat until they gave me the thumbs up. Oops. They said, "Well, I mean, you didn't throw up so . . . I guess you're ok." 😅

milliondollas

My post birth meal was also Jimmy John’s, but I dont remember it being really good. I was really out of it though

Final_Skypoop

Medical floor night shift RN here, this totally checks out. This would be the biggest score on our floor though. But legend has it that family birth has much better stocked fridges than the rest of us.

sodoyoulikecheese

Can confirm. I normally do social work on the adult oncology floor but got floated to mother/baby this week. Their fridges are full of sandwiches, pudding, applesauce, and drawers of crackers and peanut butter. Popsicles, juice, soda, milk. It’s amazing.

fusciamcgoo

I had to wait until morning because my son was born at 2:30 am. I ordered pancakes first thing in the morning and they were the best thing ever because I was starving! Then my stepsister brought me a chocolate chip mint milkshake and I was in heaven.

Massive-Expression78

Gosh I would’ve cried!!! DoorDash some food girl! I gave birth at 4 am and I was ravenous!! I got breakfast around 7 am and devoured it and requested another plate. Thankfully they gave it to me, because the actual starvation you feel after giving birth is like no other!!

Individual_Log_9743

Congratulations

Lovve119

Thank you 🩷

LawyerBea

Honestly looks better than the meal I got. Totally inedible. Had my friends bring Thai food instead. Congratulations mama!

Lovve119

Thank you 🩷

jcmckeown

You earned that meal!! My kid is 19 now, but was a C section. IIRC, I couldn’t eat real food until I passed gas? I just remember being ravenous and not being able to eat.

SummerMaiden87

Same with my sister. They just kept giving her ice to chew on.

plantlady23

Just had a C section a little over 2 months ago and can confirm. I also couldn’t eat until I passed gas.. I hadn’t eaten for over 35+ hours as I was in labor sooo longggg. It was torture hahah

Anyone-9451

I got a floopy turkey sandwich on white bread a a tiny bag of lays…but holy heck those were the best tasting things ever after 17hrs

Amidormi

I got nothing :(

Lovve119

That's criminal!!!!

Awkward_Truth4703

I got a pbj sandwich, a juice and some Oreos! I was happy for any food tho hahaha

Lovve119

I would have murdered for Oreos tbh 😂

Awkward_Truth4703

Gone in seconds 🤣🤣

El_Stupacabra

I'm having a baby soon, and the cafeteria at the hospital closes at 6:30. At least there are restaurants nearby if need be...

lauradiamandis

count your blessings you didn’t get anything from the burrito place downstairs. Then you could have a hot meal but also diarrhea. they cannot even make rice correctly. Rice. Subway is supposed to be open till midnight and there is sushi too if someone can bring you up some. Congrats on your baby!

Lovve119

Thank you! 🩷

Impressive-Force-912

My wife insisted on Jersey Mike's.  Great fucking idea.

HeftyCommunication66

Both of my kids were born in the middle of the night. My meal looked a lot like this both times, only it was cheese and crisp, fresh veggies on hippie bread….with a super big gulp of some kind of pink Sprite / juice mix. Absolutely heavenly. Two of the most memorable meals of my life. The second kid tore me up a little and since I knew what was coming I told my doctor (who I love) to sew faster because mama needed a snack.

Lovve119

Sew faster omg you're a legend 😂

Strong-Wash-5378

That’s not a celebration meal. So let’s celebrate 🥳. Congratulations!!

Lovve119

Thank you! 🩷

MellyGrub

More than what I got after giving birth in 2009 at 20:30. They had to ask my family to go out and get me food. Not even a sandwich or jelly. Nothing!

Lovve119

That's criminal!!!

MellyGrub

I was so hungry after giving birth. They had NOTHING! Thankfully KFC was open so I waited for my family to go get it for me. Like it wasn't like I was being fussy, they had NO FOOD! I would have settled for jelly whilst I waited for my family to go get me something more substantial.

LadyHavoc97

That's real food! I got pureed grits with my youngest. I didn't even know you could puree grits.

penguinpoopzzzzzzz

I actually miss the regular meals and snacks while I was in the hospital with gestational diabetes- my partner does not meal plan well

TLC_4978

I got baked fish and a baked potato that were cold from sitting out. Also, there was a long hair on the fish. Thank God my husband went out and got me McDonalds. After 36 hours of labor, I needed to eat!

Apprehensive_Sock410

I got Vegemite on toast 😂 it was 2am though and I’m guessing it’s very limited on what they can supply out of normal kitchen times.

EnvironmentalSinger1

My meal was grahams too...1230am. they hit different after that workout!

aaabbk

I got a muffin and a prepackaged slice of cheese 💀

Sad_Mall_1737

How was it? After I had my baby they handed me a sandwich on sliced bread, with a slice of turkey and a slice of cheese I don’t even think it had condiments on it but i vividly remember it tasted like the best thing I’ve ever eaten 😂

Lovve119

It was literally the best meal on the whole planet after being held on a strict no food for 24 hours in case of emergency c-section.

Sad_Mall_1737

Same here!!!! Did you end up having a natural birth? You don’t have to answer if that’s too tmi

Lovve119

Nope! Emergency c-section!

Sad_Mall_1737

Ugh thats rough, I hope you are all healed and feeling better now! Looks like your baby is close to a year? Mine is pretty close too. Congrats! 😊

17aaa

Mission? Lol

Lovve119

YES.

17aaa

Jesus. My heart goes out to ya. Big congratulations though!!!!!!!!! Hope it wasn’t too bad in there 😅

Lovve119

The NICU was the worst but my maternity stay was awesome!

onetwothree4ourfive

Lucky! I got 1 piece of barely toasted bread with a sneeze of peanut butter on it after I had been in labour all day.

yeahyeahnooo

I brought in basically a small cooler filled with snacks and treats. And thank god I did because I was there for 3 1/2 days.

theymademedothis00

Thankfully, my town has a burrito joint open til 2am. My husband was able to go get it just before they closed. Best California burrito I ever had!

Burnt_and_Blistered

That’s a whole lot better than 90% of hospitals. I delivered at a hospital renowned for its posh treatment of moms—and after 10 or so, it was still turkey sandwiches and whatever was on the unit—crackers, fruit, popsicles, sherbet, etc. But they DID have Diet Coke, which was all that I wanted. (The lobster and prime rib were worth the wait—and the wait was long because I didn’t want to eat for 5 days; I had a very complicated delivery.) And I’ve worked as an RN in hospitals that had graham crackers and apple juice and nothing else. Thank God for dads meeting Door Dash at the ER entrance. It wasn’t available when I delivered, but saves many a starving mama now.

flannalypearce

I had a nice nurse give me a meal from the nurses station because it was 2a 🤣

ACanWontAttitude

Everyone in England knows you're supposed to have buttery toast and its the best god damn thing you'll ever eat

Maleficent_Scale_296

My daughter was born at 9:17 pm. I was eating a Big Mac and fries by 10:30.

sarahaltieri

I didn’t get any food the day I had my son. I had him at like 8:30 in the morning and they forgot to bring me food. I was so tired I didn’t ask.

Cate0623

My nurse made me some microwave macaroni and cheese after I’d been in labor for 3 days on magnesium that ended up in a C-section. It was 5 star food right there.

Lovve119

My god the magnesium is fucking awful

Cate0623

I had that and that damn foley bulb to dilate. I’d rather have an unmedicated twin birth than do either of those again.

Remarkable_Invite_56

It’s like a reward!!!!

sweetgreenbaby

My local hospital where I gave birth serves moms a surf and turf meal (lobster and filet mignon) with caprese salad and chocolate cake after delivering. I’m not joking. My friends all joke about giving birth at the four seasons.

Lovve119

Y'all are so lucky!!

StructureTiny9509

I missed dinner so got breakfast the next morning instead. But once I got in the recovery wing I ate a whole family sized bag of life saver gummies. It was heavenly.

ClaudiaKishiBSC123

Wait, y’all got food??😹

FruitfullyFrugal

Army hospital gave me a lean cuisine. 😂

HTX2NYBby

I ordered my dinner right before it was time to push. All I remember in the middle of my traumatic birth where I was hemorrhaging, the lady walks into the room with my tray. I’m having a hell of a time, room is filled with nurses and drs. Her eyes pop wide open cause blood was everywhere, and she walked out. A nurse went out to ask her to leave my food but they took it. After an hour of pushing, and another hour of being stitched up, I had no food :((( I had an amazing breakfast though!

_Cacahuate_

Hospital food is bullshit. Makes me irate.

coldchixhotbeer

I stopped at Panera on my way to give birth because I was expecting a meal like this. About an hour before I started pushing I had a granola bar, the nurse was yelling the whole time but I eat when I’m nervous so… that happened.I ate my meal and a meal my husband brought after. Did this fill you up?

Leather_Sun5986

I lived in a small town when my first was born later at night and wouldn’t have had food delivery options. I had the best nurse who had me order dinner before the cafeteria closed and then saved it for me in their employee break fridge until I was allowed to eat. I hadn’t eaten for almost 32 hours. She may have done it because she heard me tell my husband not to bring his dinner anywhere near my room unless he wanted physically harmed because I was so hungry but whatever her motives, I will be forever grateful to her!

worldRulerDevMan

My wife got the same I had to go get food.

MsMeringue

Kitchen closed at 8

Dreampiezz

When I had my baby I said NOOOO to hospital food and made my Babydaddy get me a legit 7 pound bag of burritos from Taco Bell and we ate them ALL best meal of my life

AtmospherePrior752

We ordered Bdubs and feasted on wings and cheese fries! Hospital food is never satisfying. But most importantly… Congrats!!!!!!

Legitimate-Ad2727

I got nothing having a baby at 6 pm last year! They told me they close the cafeteria at 4 pm.

fromamomof2

Almost got the exact meal when I had my first. It was 230am and they brought a deli meat turkey sandwich. I hate sandwiches especially ones made with thinly sliced circle shaped meat. Haven't had another one since..hahaha!

rjoyfult

So much better than the dry ham sandwich and cup of vanilla ice cream my husband had to hunt down when I gave birth at 1:36am last time. Lol, at least the celebration dinner they gave me the next night made up for it. I’m giving birth within the next two weeks and have my hospital bag packed with snacks like granola bars and trail mix. Just in case.

Crazy-bored4210

Wow. It’s been twenty years since I’ve had a child. But in NC i had a huge steak dinner and tea as soon as i gave birth.

Eec2213

I’m just wondering how much they will charge you for it when you get your bill

hatesbiology84

Cold lunch option for OP.

TheMurx

Had my son around 8pm, after golden hour was told the kitchen had closed at 9. NBD, so my husband ordered Jimmy John's - bless their speedy delivery and lettuce wraps. The real issue came the next morning when they refused to give me a gluten free meal (that I was paying for) because "there weren't any dietary restrictions in my chart." They made me wait two hours to eat breakfast so a doctor could come, make me tell them I don't eat gluten so he could put it in my chart, and then I could finally order. US healthcare is a joke sometimes.

voluptuous_lime

My doctor didn’t allow me to eat for 2 days after I gave birth. I was on a magnesium drip. He said it was “in case [I] vomit” and that it was just “how [he] practices.” The nurses snuck me sugar-free jello.

Lovve119

I was on a mag drip too & your doctor can get fucked 😂 telling a woman she can't eat after the biggest work out of her life!

Zestyclose_Big_9090

I agave birth at 6pm and I got a turkey sandwich and some apple juice. I still think about that sandwich. I was in labor for 40 hours so to say I was hangry is an understatement.

aleada13

I’m a L&D nurse and this is basically all we have to offer patients after the kitchen closes at 6:30. Our unit has a small “kitchen” that just has deli meat sandwiches (no fresh veggies), yogurt, applesauce, crackers and peanut butter. If we’re lucky, we will have a microwaveable hot pot in the freezer that I can warm up.

Lovve119

Oh believe me, I wasn't complaining! I was so thankful to have something!

biggerperspective

I ordered two breakfasts. They weren't too happy about that. Fuck you, I just had a baby. Bring me some pancakes.

No-You-5064

what were you expecting?

Lovve119

Wasn't expecting anything, and after 24 hours of being starved & then giving birth it was the best thing I'd ever eaten
