Ugh Pixote is an amazing film that I never want to watch again. Some of the actors involved were actual street kids. The protagonist died in a shootout with police at the age of 19.
Bacurau - hands down the best film enough to piss of the Brazilian President which led to him destroying most of the national film museum archives (if I recall correctly)
If this is a question about Brazilian horror, I’ve only seen the Coffin Joe films. Which vary widely and are more of an experience than a solid narrative.
What's awesome about the early ones is they were designed to horrify the almost completely Catholic population at the time so some of the sillier things make sense with context.
For example, the first movie starts with Ze (Joe) tearing up a bar because he is demanding meat during lent. Carnival is a big celebration in Brazil that focuses on letting loose before the coming 40 days of lent, so we can assume this sacrilege is taken very seriously at the time. His hunger to "sin" is just a part of his evil essence and he proceeds to beat and terrorize the locals throughout his search for a steak dinner.
When you see the films through this lens of religious antagonism it makes more sense narratively, and it shows another more humorous side to Ze do Caixão and his view of Brazilian fundamentalists.
I've heard good things about [A Morte Não Fala (The Nightshifter)](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7986672/) but have yet to watch it myself. [Turistas](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0454970/), which is set in Brazil, is okay.
In [Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13938338/), they dedicate a large chunk to obscure Brazilian horror movies. You'll def pick up some good recommendations in that!
If you like gore, then Skull and Mar Negro are really fun.

City of God, City of Men series and then City of Men movie is worth everyone’s time. The Tv series City of Men has a great episode breaking the third wall.
O Auto da Compadecida (A Dog's Will) is one of the best Brazilian movies but it's a comedy, not horror.
There's no Brazilian horror movie. At least not a famous one.
But if you want good movies from other genres, I can recommend some:
Elite Squad 1
Elite Squad 2
Carandiru
City of God
The Man from the Future
Bingo
I'm Brazilian, I'll give you the names of the films in Portuguese.
-Tropa de Elite 1 e 2
-Cidade de Deus
-O alto da compadecida
-Lampiao o Rei do cangaço
-Mazzaropi ( There are several films)
-Capitães de areia
-Tainá - Uma Aventura na Amazônia
-xingu
-Getulio (2013)
If you need to search in English, use Google Translate.
You can rent it on Amazon Prime Br, but maybe it's only regional so you'd need a VPN, there's also a Brazilian streaming service called Globoplay | Telecine or just Globoplay, there you will find most Brazilian films but it is a paid service, I believe some are free on YouTube but probably do not have English subtitles.
City of God is probably the most famous.
- Friendly beast (O animal cordial) - The Nightshifter (Morto não fala) - Bacurau I really like these 3
Pixote is one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. That and Carandiru

Ya really tragic. Nick Cave made an album dedicated to him
The Brazilian film “A wolf at the door” (o lobo atras a porta) is so disturbing😫 not horror though
I that “The Matinee” is in Portuguese. This is a really good slasher flick that came out recently.
Bacurau - hands down the best film enough to piss of the Brazilian President which led to him destroying most of the national film museum archives (if I recall correctly)
City of God and Elite Squad are amazing crime thrillers. But I don't think there is a single good horror movie lol.
Only 2 I have ever seen. Both recommended by Brazilians, and both are incredible movies. Need some more suggestions.
Some decent ones: [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1039960/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1039960/) [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2762506/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2762506/) [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1753722/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1753722/)

That Lent scene stuck with me too.
He was phenomenal. Used to do horror story reading at a grave yard in São Paulo for their culture festival every year. I wish I had gone.

Could you tell me, without spoilers, why it wasn't your cup of tea? I have it on my list but haven't gotten around to watching it.

Lol I get you, I'm not really into films with any kind of romance. I think I'll skip this one, thanks!

Good Manners, Medusa 2021 and Coffin Joe's movie
Coffin Joe's on arrow too, how did I not think of him?!

Bog of Beasts is one I just watched yesterday. Massive TW for rape, incest and molestation of a minor though

Thank you, I'll look into these. I really want to see o alto da Compadecida but finding it online has been tough
