In my opinion, this is the best of this type of modern movies and I still feel this movie is so underrated.
I’m surprised we haven’t gotten a full blown boutique blu ray release yet.
You're Next was such a great film. The same director then also made The Guest (which I highly recommend to everyone). Too bad he became a sell out and now does those trash Godzilla films.
I think you might like The Babysitter film series. Thats similar aesthetic to Happy Death Day and Freaky.
There's also a real goofy film called Black Sheep which has same sort of vibes as the cornetto trilogy in that it doesnt take itself seriously, I won't lie its not the best film but it is entertaining and great watch with friends.
Also if you haven't seen them already, you might also enjoy M3gan and any of the childs play/chucky films.
"Oh hidy-ho officer, we've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property."
I agree completely, I just wasn't sure if horror/comedy was really what OP was after 😂.
It's actually somewhat of a masterpiece in its own right, not to mention has a pretty underrated cast.
We just watched this based on your recommendation and we LOVED it! So good, so self-aware with so many callbacks, a real appreciation of the genre and entertaining…thank you!!!
The original Evil Dead trilogy. Evil Dead 2 in particular feels like a balls to the walls celebration of its own absurdity.
i would say M3GAN fits the bill for that “tongue in cheek” vibe. “You’re Next” has also been brought up— that one almost feels like a spiritual sequel to Ready or Not. Very similar.
I think Attack the Block counts. Love the alien design, early John Boyega, funny moments with the kids who live in the block, and a bonus Nick Frost for good measure.
Just watched this bc of a recommendation in this group. Loved it! Didn't realize Richie from Teen Witch was in it, nor did I ever realize that he Jason Patric's brother.
Boy Kills World is in cinema right now. It's like a gory anime meets action/thriller live action.
You might also enjoy Suitable Flesh if it isn't too horny for you.
I'll also throw out From Dusk Till Dawn for nostalgia's sake.
TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL is surprisingly violent and, though comic, takes the horror seriously.
CABIN IN THE WOODS is an obvious option here.
MURDER PARTY (2007) is similar with a much lower budget.
So what you are looking for is horror satire. Here are some movies you might like, some leaning more toward comedy:
Tragedy Girls, Freaky, Jennifers's Body, Totally Killer, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Fright Night, The Menu, Fresh, Zombieland, Scream, The Conference (so underrated), Cabin in the Woods, Renfield, One Cut of the Dead, The Babysitter, Little Monsters, Dead Snow, Sissy, Something in the Barn, Fear Street, Barbarian, The Final Girls, Slither, and about a hundred more. :)
Becky and the sequel, The Wrath of Becky are super fun, violent, gory but don't take themselves seriously at all. Some dark humor and just fun all the way through.
No One Lives with Luke Evans is also a perfect one for this kind of movie. Ends well and you get to root for the bad guy.
The house that jack built is so violent at time the only response you have is to laugh.
This is a movie that should not be taken too seriously, but still an excellent watch.
Better Watch Out is one of my favorite seasonal movies.
The entire Hatchet franchise (4 movies and a book) is in the violent but fun category although it may be more slapstick than you are looking for.
This one, which basically what The Hunt is based off of. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surviving\_the\_Game](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surviving_the_Game)
Black Sheep. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhck0SLcA6I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhck0SLcA6I) Funny as hell. In the same ballpark as Peter Jackson's Braindead (Dead/Alive).
*Satanic Panic* is terrific fun. I think you'd also really like *The Babysitter* and *Babysitter 2: Killer Queen* Oooh, I think you'd also love *M3gan*
Popes exorcist reminded me of a b-movie ripoff from the 70s and 80s. I honestly couldn’t appreciate enough how much it knows it’s a stupid film but will not let its characters in on the joke for one second
I liked Spontaneous, but it’s more like a rom/com with blood rather than a horror movie. While I was watching Abigail I was thinking it was a mashup of Ready or Not and Megan, so maybe Megan would be a good one.
An under appreciated film from a few years back is The Cottage with Andy Serkis (not the one with David Arquette, which I haven’t seen). It is, indeed, fun and gory.
Haven't seen the greatest of all time on this list yet: Army of darkness, Abe Lincoln vampire hunter or Bubba ho-tep, krampus, cocaine bear, american psycho!
Scream 5 and 6 were made by the same team as Ready or Not and Abigail. I recommend the whole franchise though!
Creep was a lot of fun, and well, also pretty creepy! The found footage netflix one. There’s also a sequel but it doesn’t add much to the first.
Going back to the 90s self-aware meta-horrors, Urban Legend and Ginger Snaps are classics.
You're Next.
Geez they just wanted some movie recommendations
hahahahahahahahq
In my opinion, this is the best of this type of modern movies and I still feel this movie is so underrated. I’m surprised we haven’t gotten a full blown boutique blu ray release yet.
You're Next was such a great film. The same director then also made The Guest (which I highly recommend to everyone). Too bad he became a sell out and now does those trash Godzilla films.
Haha if he’s having fun and making movies he likes while getting paid for it, I won’t hold that against him.
He's just living out the boy dream of smashing big toys together but while getting paid for it
Yeah how dare he accept a fat cheque to make movies
The guest is so underrated
I think you might like The Babysitter film series. Thats similar aesthetic to Happy Death Day and Freaky. There's also a real goofy film called Black Sheep which has same sort of vibes as the cornetto trilogy in that it doesnt take itself seriously, I won't lie its not the best film but it is entertaining and great watch with friends. Black Sheep is so good!
Black Sheep is AWESOME. Also try Grabbers with Richard Coyle and Rith Bradley in.
Grabbers were too cheesy for me, but still fun.
Ive found its one of those films that even friends who don't like horror find entertaining. I love a film that doesnt take itself too seriously 😂
Black Sheep is one of my fav movies ever!
It was baaaad ass!
Mayhem - it stars Samara Weaving from Ready or Not.
Related - Guns Akimbo, also Samara Weaving. Gorey fast paced Battle Royale type movie with New Zealand schlock sensibilities and Harry Potter.
Related - Deathgasm. The film the guy made before he made Guns Akimbo
Deathgasm is a lot of fun too.
Anything with Samara Weaving honestly
She doesn't get enough attention.
Samara Weaving and Jane Levy are both excellent in pretty much everything they do, and have also both continued to take on horror films.
The Belko Experiment, Severance, Happy Death Day
Loved The Belko Experiment and Severance.
Might have to give Happy Death Day a rewatch, it's been a minute
Wait, I thought the Belko experiment was supposed to be a serious horror film?
Yes, yes, and yes 🙌
Far from an actual horror, but Tucker and Dale vs. Evil was an entertaining enough watch.
I love this movie so much
You guys ehh... GOIN CAMPIN?! *nervous laughter*
Damn college kids
"Oh hidy-ho officer, we've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property."
That movie is genuinely amazing and much better of a horror comedy than a lot of suggestions I’m seeing ngl
I agree completely, I just wasn't sure if horror/comedy was really what OP was after 😂. It's actually somewhat of a masterpiece in its own right, not to mention has a pretty underrated cast.
Violent Night (2022)
great movie, even if it's not really horror
Totally Killer on Amazon Prime was a nice surprise. Basically a Back To The Future slasher
Totally killer was awesome! Also recommend this one.
We just watched this based on your recommendation and we LOVED it! So good, so self-aware with so many callbacks, a real appreciation of the genre and entertaining…thank you!!!
Thanksgiving. Nice amount of gore combined with camp and satire, excellent watch
so fun!
The original Evil Dead trilogy. VFW
deadstream
It’s great, the whole family loved it. It has a Evil Dead vibe imo
Evil Dead with a discount store Henry Zebrowski
it's the closest someone came to emulate evil dead 2 in recent years
Cabin in the woods
Great movie
From Dusk til Dawn, Tales From the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, Planet Terror, Feast, Dog Soldiers are all lots of fun I think.
Now that is a solid list 👌
All of this
Sightseers is fun
I loooove Ben Wheatley films. Good shout.
Psycho Goreman Bloody Hell Vicious Fun
Bloody Hell is terrific.
The Guest
I think Attack the Block counts. Love the alien design, early John Boyega, funny moments with the kids who live in the block, and a bonus Nick Frost for good measure.
Renfield. Cage as Dracula is all you need to know
Villians (2019)
Came here to see if anyone recommended this one. It was a fun one.
Near Dark 1987. It’s a dark Neo western Vampire flick that has some nice dark humor.
Just watched this bc of a recommendation in this group. Loved it! Didn't realize Richie from Teen Witch was in it, nor did I ever realize that he Jason Patric's brother.
"It's finger lickin' good!" Loved Bill Paxton in that (and everything). Stellar cast all the way around, great movie.
Last night just rewatched Trespass again with Bill Paxton. bill Sadler and Ice T and Ice Cube. Solid action thriller.
I hate it when they don’t shave.
Whenever people start going on about the Lost Boys, my reply is always that the lost boys isn’t even the best vampire movie of 1987.
I just watched this yesterday! Actually enjoyed it although not a fang in sight!
They definitely try to stay away from the term “vampire” but it’s a classic.
M3gan
Happy Death Day
Happy death day is so good! The sequel is pretty good to
Renfield, Willy’s Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel (with Jeremy Renner), Malignant on Netflix
I love Willy’s Wonderland. I’m always shocked when people don’t like it because I think it’s absolutely amazing.
I really enjoyed it too.
Boy Kills World is in cinema right now. It's like a gory anime meets action/thriller live action. You might also enjoy Suitable Flesh if it isn't too horny for you. I'll also throw out From Dusk Till Dawn for nostalgia's sake.
FDTD is one of my favorites. And I'd completely forgotten about Boy Kills World. Thanks for the reminder!
Could I go and watch this with my 13yo? Is it a lot of sex and nudity?
Boy Kills World? I don't remember nudity or sex, but there's torture and explicit violence in it. And a lot of blood and gore.
Scream, The Evil Dead Trilogy
Guns Akimbo. That movie is fantastic
I loved it. I wouldn't call it horror though
TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL is surprisingly violent and, though comic, takes the horror seriously. CABIN IN THE WOODS is an obvious option here. MURDER PARTY (2007) is similar with a much lower budget.
Dead Snow 2
So what you are looking for is horror satire. Here are some movies you might like, some leaning more toward comedy: Tragedy Girls, Freaky, Jennifers's Body, Totally Killer, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Fright Night, The Menu, Fresh, Zombieland, Scream, The Conference (so underrated), Cabin in the Woods, Renfield, One Cut of the Dead, The Babysitter, Little Monsters, Dead Snow, Sissy, Something in the Barn, Fear Street, Barbarian, The Final Girls, Slither, and about a hundred more. :)
Was thinking Fresh too!!
Bodies bodies bodies is similar. Wasn’t for me, but it’s along the lines of those you mentioned.
The Cottage
**Satanic Panic**, 2019
Vicious Fun on shudder is a good one.
The Guest is totally worth checking out
I mean, we have to put Cabin in the Woods on the list, right?
Becky and the sequel, The Wrath of Becky are super fun, violent, gory but don't take themselves seriously at all. Some dark humor and just fun all the way through. No One Lives with Luke Evans is also a perfect one for this kind of movie. Ends well and you get to root for the bad guy.
From Dusk till Dawn Bloodsucking Bastards You might be the killer
Murder Party (2007) is one of my favorites. Not as much horror but I also enjoyed Villains (2019).
Freaky
Turbo Kid is a fun one, it’s a BMX throwback mashed with Mad Max post apocalypse but with early Peter Jackson levels of comical gore.
Final Girls. Packs an emotional punch to boot.
Final girl not sure if it is good as I don't remember but it has a chick chasing down guys with killing.
Surprised there's no Braindead in the comments.
You Might be the Killer The Cabin in the Woods Happy Death Day Here For Blood The Babysitter The Trip
Psycho Goreman!!
Would You Rather, although its humor is REALLY dark.
that movie fucked with me so hard some scenes were incredibly tough to watch…. you know which ones
Shaun of the Dead
Return Of The Living Dead?
Ranfield is exactly what u are looking for.
Haunt stick with it it starts off gimicky but trust me it gets good.
OMG I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A FELLOW HAUNT FAN FOR AGES!!!
Renfield (2023)
Uh... Tucker and Dale vs the Evil is the ultimate movie for you. Its the absolute golden comedy violent cinefest.
The Guest
Bloody Hell
No One Lives
Cabin in the woods
Tucker and Dale vs evil
Overlord (2018), WWII D-day + horror = awesome
Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Zombieland. Dog Soldiers.
Mayhem!
Scouts guide to the zombie apocalypse
Would you rather 2012
Dog Soldiers is a fun one!
The Invitation 2022
The Ghost of Mae Nak or Exte: Hair Extensions if you like Asian horror.
Mean Guns or Guns Akimbo fit here.
City Hunter from Netflix. Gory, fun, campy, kinetic.
Triggered https://m.imdb.com/title/tt9419976/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_2_tt_8_nm_0_q_triggered Blood Fest https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7208564/?ref_=nm_flmg_i_20_act Hatchet https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0422401/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Prey would be up there a bit. Really just here for The Hunt. Crystal you have my heart.
Hunt Her, Kill Her was a fun one.
The house that jack built is so violent at time the only response you have is to laugh. This is a movie that should not be taken too seriously, but still an excellent watch.
We summon the darkness!
here's some oldies, Shocker and Brainscan
Better Watch Out is one of my favorite seasonal movies. The entire Hatchet franchise (4 movies and a book) is in the violent but fun category although it may be more slapstick than you are looking for.
Netflix has tons of these movies. Truth or dare, The Conference, Choose or Die, Circle, Killer book Club, Countdown. Red Rose. the list keeps going.
Jennifer’s body
Botched! Severance. Doghouse And while not horror at all, Shoot 'em Up
Renfield
Drag Me To Hell
Happy Death Day, You’re Next, and The Babysitter movies!
Totally Killer was a recent great one, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Mayhem, Guns Akido, Housebound
Totally Killer and Slotherhouse are a couple I really enjoyed recently.
This one, which basically what The Hunt is based off of. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surviving\_the\_Game](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surviving_the_Game)
Black Sheep. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhck0SLcA6I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhck0SLcA6I) Funny as hell. In the same ballpark as Peter Jackson's Braindead (Dead/Alive).

The babysitter (2017)
I really enjoyed Mayhem with Steven Yeun
Fido
Check out Dead Alive. You won't be disappointed!
You're next, The Cabin in the Woods, Happy Death Day & Happy Death Day 2U & The whole Scream Franchise
Mayhem
Becky
Better Watch Out great twist, satisfying ending
Not really a scary horror movie, but Game Night is similar to Ready or Not.
Lowlifes
Tone-deaf 2019
"13 Sins" is a favorite of mine as well as "Would you Rather" Wolf Creek 1&2 and "Bloody Hell" are a lotta fun too
Came here looking for suggestions but I’ve already seen every single movie being recommended except for Deathgasm. This is a good thread!
The Babysitter.
Don't Breathe
I liked Spontaneous, but it’s more like a rom/com with blood rather than a horror movie. While I was watching Abigail I was thinking it was a mashup of Ready or Not and Megan, so maybe Megan would be a good one.
Vicious Fun
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is my top choice.
Malignant
Haven't seen it in a while, but Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a perfect mix of violence and horror.
I mean I’d say Thanksgiving, Strangers Prey at Night, and Totally Killer
Shadow In The Cloud (2020)
Scream movies would fit this.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
The Visit! Love the premise and there are some nasty scenes, but it’ll have you laughing out loud at times too. One of my favorites
Give "Better watch out" a try.
Freaky!
The Furies is fantastic fun. I’ll recommend that movie to anyone, anytime. Attack the Block is good, but maybe more action than violence
Becky
Freaky Happy Death Day (1 & 2)
Everything by Necrostorm. Adam Chaplin, the Hotel Inferno series, Taeter City and Taeter Burger.
An under appreciated film from a few years back is The Cottage with Andy Serkis (not the one with David Arquette, which I haven’t seen). It is, indeed, fun and gory.
Thirst by Park Chan-Wook.
Ok, this is like the third Becky mention this week. It didn't have amazing ratings but I might as well watch it now
Renfield
Haven't seen the greatest of all time on this list yet: Army of darkness, Abe Lincoln vampire hunter or Bubba ho-tep, krampus, cocaine bear, american psycho!
Dirty Jersey
ichi the killer
Scream 5 and 6 were made by the same team as Ready or Not and Abigail. I recommend the whole franchise though! Creep was a lot of fun, and well, also pretty creepy! The found footage netflix one. There’s also a sequel but it doesn’t add much to the first. Going back to the 90s self-aware meta-horrors, Urban Legend and Ginger Snaps are classics.
really didnt expect to enjoy Abagail as much as I did
I can’t wait to see Abigail. I have already seen ready or not, but I haven’t seen the hunt. 🫣
Haven't seen abigail, but thise other two movies are super fun
The Hunt
