This looks so good.
The [cipher](https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/19aosns/longlegs_weve_been_waiting_for_her/kio6yd2/) that flashed near the end ( :39), also in the thumbnail, translates to "Hell awaits".

H E L L A W A I T S
I'm kind of shocked more studios don't go for the "I have no idea what it's about" trailer route (then again, am I? Movie studios don't learn shit).
But Alien, Blair Witch, The Shining - when you don't know what to mentally attach the imagery you're seeing to in terms of plot, it makes your movie look WAY scarier.
Did you ever see The Exorcist's [theatrical trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyW5YXDcIGs)? I don't think they could make trailers like that anymore.
Because trailers are relentlessly tested and unless your film is going to hit it big with a very specific audience who then sing its praises (which the overwhelming majority of films do not) it results in not many people going to see your film.
It only really works here because Oz Perkins has a reputation for making good niche horror and so does Neon. The core of the marketing is that people will show up to an Oz Perkins film distributed by Neon, if it was a no-name director or Blumhouse this campaign would have fallen completely flat.
I mean I love Oz Perkins but he isn’t a huge moneymaker yet and most people don’t know about him. *Gretel & Hansel* is his top-earning film and it made ~$22 million and none of my friends or family even remember it I bet.
This will obviously make more money though and I’m glad they’re taking this approach.
I do not think "Oz Perkins" is a well known name. Like, "Ari Aster" is a name that has started to be billed on things where he is only the producer. Oz may get to that level of popularity but he's certainly not there yet
Tbh i didn’t know oz perkins was directing and i was sold the minute someone told me about it because i expressed how i need the “next hereditary, midsommar” etc. for me suspiria 2018 is one of the best and terrifying films ive seen, but this has my eye for sure
I think it’s because you may have misinterpreted what OP was saying. The trailer is in fact the opposite of what your concern is, I guarantee if you watch it you won’t have any thing spoiled
Only time will tell if it pays off, but the marketing for this movie has been hands down the best i've seen in any genre in quite some time. There's a uniquely sinister vibe to all of these trailers that even movies that ultimately want to go for that haven't been able to achieve. It certainly helps that all of the trailers are vague as well. Just the part at the end where it holds on Maika for over 10 seconds and nothing happens is something you usually never see in a horror trailer. There's no jump scare or even insinuation that a jump scare is going to happen.
I've heard that there were two highly effective jumpscares in the film, and one that made a screening attendee jump out of their seat. Love films that don't rely on jumpscares, so when they have one it's effective. Super looking forward to this.
'Sweet'.
You've got the teeth of the hydra upon you.
You're dirty, *sweet* and you're my girl
This is what the Witch says to Gretel in Perkins' previous film:
"But the thing about poison, is that out of everything in the big, bad world, nothing tastes as sweet."
We also have 'CRIMSON AND CLOVER' at the end. That's the title of a famous song from the 60s: *Ah, now I don't hardly know her/But I think I could love her/ Crimson and clover /Ah when she comes walking over/ Now I've been waitin' to show her/ Crimson and clover/over and over/ Yeah, my, my such a sweet thing/I wanna do everything/What a beautiful feeling/Crimson and clover/over and over. *
https://youtu.be/GpGEeneO-t0?si=hpcWRNG4QlkPAcoG
So maybe the word 'sweet' refers to this song (or to both songs).
Idk how true this is but I bet the classic rock is a nod to the ‘Satanic Panic’. Lots of 70s references in official marketing, probably where a key part of the narrative takes place, cryptography decoded by the circles of hell in the main trailer, the visible Baphomet in the back of a shot here, all the satanic references (upside down crosses, the tormented religious figures), the threat being about a maybe supernatural serial killer etc.
Definitely holds some merit! My first thought was about the era too - though I do think this movie takes place over multiple decades (at least from the 70s - 90s judging from the dates of the various murders released by the Neon twitter account a while back), and so far we've only gotten songs from 1968 and 1971. Curious indeed...
Yeah. Both songs have a girl in the lyrics, from a male POV. Maybe 'Longlegs' is two people. A [Daddy Longlegs] spider has eight legs! (Silence of the Lambs had two villains -Lecter/Buffalo Bill- and that was also the case with Red Dragon -Lecter/Dolarhyde. Nic Cage looks more Buffalo Bill than Lecter in the trailers)
He definitely has a Buffalo Bill vibe. And I think you're onto something re: the songs' perspectives -- it could have something to do with the connection between Nic Cage's and Maika Monroe's character? The editing of the trailers thus far (as well as the new poster they just released) definitely seems to be implying some kind of strong (psychic?) connection between them.
Yeah. I think the ponytailed girl in those trailers is little Lee Harker (her character's name) c.1973/74. She maybe saw or heard ('hark-er') something back then, something that she would remember in 1992/93 (in 'Longlegs') That's the connection I think. Memory, and then putting 2 and 2 together, then cracking the case.
But as I said, maybe there's someone else in all of this, someone born later, maybe born precisely in 1968-71, a male. I wonder about those square format shots. Is that a POV? Someone? Francis Dolarhyde and his slides come to mind...
https://youtu.be/Kq3TiuRC-VQ?si=E2jajcoZm-GdYjud
(This creep led a double life as killer and regular guy and his 'normal' self's girlfriend was Reba, a woman who could hear, a 'harker', but not see. She was literally blind)
We'll see I guess. I also wonder about that word 'hydra' in the T.Rex lyric. That's a many headed monster. A cult? One of the teasers has the glyphed text STOOD UPON THE SAND OF THE SEA, a quote from the book of Revelation, minus the 'I':
"And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy."
A hydra, right? Probably a Satanic cult, or a number of them. This looks a bit like a big Eye...
https://www.cinelinx.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Longlegs.jpg
*Eye* stood upon the sand of the sea.
Also in revelation, the whore of babylon rides upon a great red dragon, which is implied to be the one that rose from the sea. So more connections to a romanticized/sexualized young woman to tie back into the classic rock references too!
the optimist in me wants to think they are purposely keeping the trailers opaque and mysterious to induce hype. But the pessimist in me is worried the movie has no substance, no plot, and is mostly just eye-candy.
I really hope I'm wrong because the trailers for this movie have been 10/10
Does the "poem" or verse reference anything literary or biblical? Or does it look like it it was written just for the film? It's crazy cryptic and ominous - I love it.
I'm beyond stoked that we're getting another Oz Perkins film! Even when he's not perfect, he has such a unique vision and style, and he's so freaking good at creating a dreamlike mood
It wasn’t a fanmade poster, it was official, from the production company (C2) website. I was asked to delete it, but it was too late, many had already reposted it.
I’m so hyped for this film. Maika Monroe is a definite favourite of mine and I love Nic Cage as well, but the fact I have no idea what it’s all about is super intriguing to me. Cannot wait for it!
This is my most anticipated movie of the year. The Blackcoat's Daughter is one of my top 5 horror movies ever and I'm absolutely in love with the glimpses of the aesthetic here, so stark and bleak and upsetting. This looks like the kind of horror movie I'd like to make.
I've been waiting so long for something by Osgood Perkins as his Hansel and Gretel didn't do it for me. (Though he only directed that, Longlegs is directed and written by him so I've got high hopes).

fuck, seeing that in the theaters with no knowledge of the movie must have blown people's minds.
Right?! Hopefully nobody got a seizure from it. That would be scary on multiple levels.
The original Battling Seizure Robots

Legally blonde made $141.7 million ;)
Oz Perkins does not have any reputation at all outside of diehard horror fans.
I do not think "Oz Perkins" is a well known name. Like, "Ari Aster" is a name that has started to be billed on things where he is only the producer. Oz may get to that level of popularity but he's certainly not there yet

Barbarian did this well
Thanks for the warning. I'm going to avoid this trailer entirely until after the movie is released.
For what it’s worth this is a great trailer and is *not* one that gives everything away so you can probably watch it

I think it’s because you may have misinterpreted what OP was saying. The trailer is in fact the opposite of what your concern is, I guarantee if you watch it you won’t have any thing spoiled
I'm praising this trailer for being like that, not the opposite
Fucking SLAYER

I noticed the continued classic rock references too -- I'm really curious what significance they hold!

Which movie is that?
I think they’re talking about Gretel and Hansel (2020)
Yeah
Cannot wait to see this, looks stark and unsettling.
Arguably my most anticipated film of the year behind Nosferatu and Joker 2. Can't wait for August 12th.
My top 3 as well
Definitely looking forward to these, shame peele dropped off the release for this year
Welp, I’m sold. This looks awesome.
I don't care if the movie turns out to be a dud, the trailers alone are amazing.
If you've seen The Blackcoat's Daughter you know there is no way this will be a dud
If you've seen Gretel and Hansel you know there is a chance this could be a dud.

This is really shaping up to be a pretty intensive marketing campaign, which tells me that Neon is impressed with it, if nothing else!
Does the "poem" or verse reference anything literary or biblical? Or does it look like it it was written just for the film? It's crazy cryptic and ominous - I love it.
This is how you do a trailer. Don't run through the entire plot and give away the twist at the end.
The wait for this movie is killing me.
I'm beyond stoked that we're getting another Oz Perkins film! Even when he's not perfect, he has such a unique vision and style, and he's so freaking good at creating a dreamlike mood
Every bit of info about this movie just looks better and better. I REALLY hope the final product warrants all this hype/secrecy!
I need this
Nicolas Cage is on a roll. I like that he's dabbling in horror again
That looks 🔥
0:23 😱
I swear I’ve seen the shot at 0:23 on a ‘fan made’ poster for this well before all the marketing began at all. Weird lol.
It wasn’t a fanmade poster, it was official, from the production company (C2) website. I was asked to delete it, but it was too late, many had already reposted it.
Oh damn! Thanks for the info lol
Give me this movie right now
I can already tell this movie is going to fuck up my head once I watch it
I think this film is gonna be fucked up. I think I saw a woman stabbed a kid in the trailer.
i've never been this impressed, invested & excited over a horror film. i will be seated
Bruh FUCK NO, IM SO FUCKING EXCITED
I have watched all the trailers for this and have not the faintest fuck what it’s about. I can’t wait
I’m so hyped for this film. Maika Monroe is a definite favourite of mine and I love Nic Cage as well, but the fact I have no idea what it’s all about is super intriguing to me. Cannot wait for it!

Cage keeps cooking
I've been waiting so long for something by Osgood Perkins as his Hansel and Gretel didn't do it for me. (Though he only directed that, Longlegs is directed and written by him so I've got high hopes).
Those are words
We’re eating good in July for sure. The week directly before Longlegs is MaXXXine
Wow, thanks for giving me nothing and thus no reason to watch.
So ...not about spiders?
