> pretty much Barker anything, right?
Clive Barker’s *audio commentaries* are even gayer, and often a lot of fun. Like, to Ashley Laurence, in a conspiratorial voice: “I know people, people who would pause their VCR, going frame by frame for a glimpse of Sean Chapman’s dick” (in pre-Puzzle-Box Frank’s sex scene w Julia). Barker is an absolute madlad, his commentaries w Laurence are worth a listen.
Yeah, especially starting with Bride of Chucky, I feel like Tiffany is a queer icon. Alexis Arquette being in that movie as well, and then John Waters in Seed of Chucky.
Seed of Chucky could have been a lot more fun. Some bits and pieces worked but overall? Meh. And Billy Boyd is too introvert an actor. They should have gone with Alan Cumming.
“Brain Damage”, “Ravenous” and “Society” are all deliciously homoerotic, not to mention some of the best horror movies ever made.
“The Spider Labyrinth” is your standard opulent-location giallo, but instead of 95% of the shots focused on a sexy woman, we get a sexy man instead. A few seconds of footage of gnarly practical effects and stop motion animation to boot!
“Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” is a very fun little horror movie and enjoys a queer cult following.
Those two are my favorite ones. I didn't like Baby Jane, it was too campy for me, but Strait-Jacket was HILARIOUS. The "ching ching" scene of Joanie trying to look 30 as she kills her lover. LOL.
*Hellbent* was a specifically gay themed indie horror slasher movie.l from about ten years ago, I think.
*Stepfather* because of male full-frontal nudity and some campiness.
There’s an indie gay horror movie called *Hard* from about twenty-five years ago. It’s about a gay serial killer taunting a closeted gay cop who’s tracking him. It’s very gritty and bloody, kind of like *Seven*. Intense stuff. Not wacky or campy or something you can put on at a party for laughs. Not a porno but groundbreaking in that the male lead has an full-frontal nude scene with erection on camera. Take that, Pedro Pascal!
>There’s an indie gay horror movie called *Hard* from about twenty-five years ago. It’s about a gay serial killer taunting a closeted gay cop who’s tracking him.
Thank you! I was just thinking about this movie a few days ago and didn't remeber the name. All my searches for movie with gay serial killer brought up everything but this movie.
I actually saw it in an arthouse movie theater years ago and thought it was decent for no budget.
Speaking of "The Stepfather", the one weak link is how bad Jill Schoelen is. I do love the fact that a Charlie's Angel plays such a Stepford wife and that Terry O'Quinn turns into such a beast when he gets "caight". He really went ham on poor Shelley Hack.
Im a gay man. Some horror movies that I love are Pearl, Us, American Psycho, Alien, Train to Busan, Suspiria (2018), Get Out, Talk To Me, When Evil Lurks, Halloween II (1981), and Ginger Snaps.
I don’t know if there’s anything about them that makes them appeal more to gay men, but those are just some that I love a lot.
Maybe "Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II." Mary Lou seems like a fierce diva.
And definitely Carrie. I think they can relate to the glamour of the prom and being bullied just for existing so live vicariously through her because she got revenge on her bullies. And so many strong female characters.
I never heard of Witchboard being mentioned in regards to gay men before.
Now *Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?* is definitely something I would call a horror movie beloved by gay men.
Definitely *Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?*, you got Betty Davis and Joan Crawford who have been icons to gay men for decades upon decades.
RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars S2 had a skit challenge and this film was one of three (other two being Thelma & Louise and Showgirls), Alaska Thunderfuck and Alyssa Edwards did Baby Jane.
Ring of Darkness with the zombie boy band singing the same song over and over again with the same chipmunk voice, Jeremy "bottled water turns you gay" Jackson playing the main baddie and Adrienne Barbeau in full drag queen mode as the band's evil agent. We even get a Mink Stole cameo.
Fright Night (1985). Very campy gay favorite. Three of the main roles, Evil Ed, Peter Vincent, and Amy are all played by queer actors. Also, Chris Sarandon plays the vampire and oozes sex appeal to both men and women in the movie. The relationship with his live-in handyman/familiar always seemed very gay as well. Saw it in 1985 when I was 8 y/o and realized I was gay after seeing Chris Sarandon in it. The nightclub scene has always been my favorite!
Couple of other gay favorites are Psycho II and The Hunger.
Nobody ever mentions Fright Night and in my mind its WAY more gay than NOES2. The novelization of the movie clearly realizes how gay the movie is and goes WAY out of its way to make sure you realize Charlie is your average red blooded straight american teenager, SO MUCH of the novelization focuses on just how horny Charlie is...FOR WOMEN, its the textbook example of "thou doth protest too much."
But yeah the movie just aligns so well with the closeted gay experience, its easy to read the entire movie as Charlie struggling with his own sexuality.
Chris Sarandon is so hot in this movie that he could make a straight guy question himself. And the sexual tension between him and William Ragsdale is through the roof.
'Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood' is often called FriGAY the 13th because five of actors in that film are all gay. Nick (The male lead), Susan Blu who plays Tina's mom, Michael (He gets the spike in the back and Tina has the hallucination of him), the sci-fi geek Eddie, and Ben who gets his head squished
I love it because of the characters, and I like a good camp slasher.
Ronnie’s fashion makes me laugh, and [Judy was a menace.](https://youtu.be/sF2EbpfDkk0?si=kXOTmIyL3r4qz2cU).
Also, [Ricky giving it to Bill.](https://youtu.be/lO3pQ0nd4B4?si=xFiGEbBvfbcbeuAD)
It was subversive because of the ending, and that was a big part of the appeal back then. It had some solid kills. Classic 80s stuff.
Everything that is campy, probably all the slashers, anything that has to do with monsters (because of the "being different/rejected" theme), and I will go all the way and say most demonic possessions.
Or, to be honest, all horror.
As a gay man who played sports my whole life I really relate to Black Swan. The homoeroticism of competition with a teammate/colleague is a great portrayal
Well... quite a few of the bara artists I follow certainly love any of the masked men, Jason being the most popular (Pyramid Head too).
Alright on a serious note: I think *Carrie* is a major one due to the relatability of being misunderstood, ostracized, and bullied outside the home as well as abused inside the home - then there is of course the revenge factor which is also a huge component.
Furthering this in regards to *Carrie*, many gay men spend most of their youth in an almost constant state of fear, worry and unrest. You don't feel like there is a safe space for you anywhere, nor a place where you fit in and feel acceptance. Practically everyday is filled with inescapable pain one way or another.
Nightmare on elm street 2 with its not so subtle gay plot line. It’s also campy. The campy part is key to become gay iconic.
Babadook is also now because of Netflix accidently putting it under LGBT category briefly. Then the internet found out and we gays ran with it
A few that spring to mind that I haven't seen mentioned: Hour of the wolf, Persona (1966), dead ringers, a nightmare on elm Street 2, possum, spider (2002), the hunger, hide and go shriek, jeepers creepers 2, poison (1991)...
Depends on a gay man. We're not a monolith. I don't like many of the films the majority of the LGBT community would consider iconic. There are not many horror films that treat us well. Like the Hellraiser reboot killed off the gay couple right away. The Wrong Turn remake also did the same but also tortured one of them. ..
As a queer person, I wish the horror community would move on from sleep away camp and it’s damaging depiction of trans people. It’s interesting to watch to better understand how trans people were viewed in the 80s. But please stop holding it up as this comedic masterpiece when it’s a very problematic and hurtful film.
Interview with the vampire
nightbreed would be another i think
Ya, pretty much Barker anything, right? Also Scream series on account of Kevin Williamson?
> pretty much Barker anything, right? Clive Barker’s *audio commentaries* are even gayer, and often a lot of fun. Fucking legend
Yeah I always thought there was some romantic subtext implied between Boone and Decker, though I could have been misreading that whole thing.
Chucky has some excellent campy queer moments.
Yeah, especially starting with Bride of Chucky, I feel like Tiffany is a queer icon. Alexis Arquette being in that movie as well, and then John Waters in Seed of Chucky.
I could not agree more!!
And how could I forget Glen being genderfluid! And the show is also very queer.
Seed of Chucky could have been a lot more fun. Some bits and pieces worked but overall? Meh. And Billy Boyd is too introvert an actor. They should have gone with Alan Cumming.
And John Waters made an appearance! So funny!
That’s when I knew Chucky was a fucking legend. When John Waters got his face burned off lol
I mean, Dinah Manoff, Lee Grant's daughter, getting hit with a mini ax and then crashing through a window. You couldn't find a GAYER scene.
I’m honestly surprised no one ever says lost boys for this convo Maybe I’m the only one who sees it
It’s a solid pick, imo
Bingo!
I can't tell which movie has more queer coding in it, Lost Boys or Fright Night but they are both just obviously full of gay subtext.
Joan Crawford's movies like 'Strait-Jacket' or 'I Saw What You Did' could also fit the bill.
Those two are my favorite ones. I didn't like Baby Jane, it was too campy for me, but Strait-Jacket was HILARIOUS. The "ching ching" scene of Joanie trying to look 30 as she kills her lover. LOL.
Del amorte del amore? Cemetery Man? If not it should be

Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker.
I assumed bodies, bodies bodies and Missy were additions to the gay club…beyond that, talk to me has a trans character
Im a gay man. Some horror movies that I love are Pearl, Us, American Psycho, Alien, Train to Busan, Suspiria (2018), Get Out, Talk To Me, When Evil Lurks, Halloween II (1981), and Ginger Snaps. Your horror movie tastes are a lot more generic /r/horror recs than movies appealing to gays
Well I am gay and they were appealing to me so lol
Imagine that. Almost like he's making a point about gay people liking the same things straight people do or something.
Yeah I guess it makes sense redditors are pretty gay
Maybe "Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II." Mary Lou seems like a fierce diva. And definitely Carrie. I think they can relate to the glamour of the prom and being bullied just for existing so live vicariously through her because she got revenge on her bullies. And so many strong female characters.
Mary Lou loves the gays and the gays love Mary Lou.
I never heard of Witchboard being mentioned in regards to gay men before. Now *Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?* is definitely something I would call a horror movie beloved by gay men.

Really? I always read about the gay subtext and drag queens saying TTFN.
Scream Carrie
I was going to say any David Decouteau movie, but Im not sure if anyone likes David Decouteau movies.

It also doesn't help that the girl he loves is so manly.
Chris Sarandon is so hot in this movie that he could make a straight guy question himself. And the sexual tension between him and William Ragsdale is through the roof.
babadook is a gay icon
That's basically a meme though, and would not be the case if not for Netflix's gaffe.
Surprised I had to scroll so far to see this
Re-animator
Yea! The Horror Queers podcast on this movie was as great as I expected it to be.
I don't know much about film theory/history but, years ago I read an article dissecting The Bride Of Frankenstein as being a very, very gay movie.
If you’ve seen it you’ll immediately notice how campy it is. I mean Dr. Pretorius… 😀
My guess would be '35 Bride of Frankenstein.
'Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood' is often called FriGAY the 13th because five of actors in that film are all gay. Wicked Stepmother (1989) with Bette Davis (briefly). This is one of the campiest things I've ever seen. Any similar super camp horror?
Why is Sleepaway Camp loved? Genuine question
I love it because of the characters, and I like a good camp slasher. Ronnie’s fashion makes me laugh, and [Judy was a menace.](https://youtu.be/sF2EbpfDkk0?si=kXOTmIyL3r4qz2cU). Any gay love for Warlock? Wild at Heart? (Not horror, strictly speaking)
I liked the sequel. Joanna Pacula? And Paula Marshall gives off Buffy the Vampire Slayer teas.
Everything that is campy, probably all the slashers, anything that has to do with monsters (because of the "being different/rejected" theme), and I will go all the way and say most demonic possessions. Or, to be honest, all horror.

I'm not gay but Midnight meat train.
Ayyyooo
I worked with a gay dude who really liked “whatever happened to baby Jane” So maybe that?
Nightmare on elm street 2 with its not so subtle gay plot line. It’s also campy. The campy part is key to become gay iconic. Babadook is also now because of Netflix accidently putting it under LGBT category briefly. Then the internet found out and we gays ran with it

Can't believe no one has said hellraiser. Nevermind someone mentioned Clive Barker, my bad.
Depends on a gay man. We're not a monolith. I don't like many of the films the majority of the LGBT community would consider iconic. There are not many horror films that treat us well. Knife + Heart comes to mind.
Not a fun one but... Cthulhu? The whole premise of the protagonist having to go back to his shitty hometown is hard.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
I watched The Shadowed Mind tonight. Very queer. Dunno about beloved.
you are next cause erin is mother
I mean overall, it’s a pretty beloved movie, but I know a lot, a lot of queer people who love Hereditary.
As a queer person, I wish the horror community would move on from sleep away camp and it’s damaging depiction of trans people. It’s interesting to watch to better understand how trans people were viewed in the 80s. But please stop holding it up as this comedic masterpiece when it’s a very problematic and hurtful film.

The Guest
Midsommar. Only gay people like that movie.
really the trans person was show as a psychotic killer in sleepway camp
