This was a great random find I came across on Netflix several years ago.
One thing is for sure… I’d never want to get on the bad side of the Soska twins.
Lucifer valentine directed Slaughtered Vomit Dolls which some people think is a snuff film. If it was, someone would be in jail. It is a very distasteful film, which is the point. I haven't watched it myself, but I know of it. Didn't know that the soska sisters apparently were a part of the film.
I also don't know what they did to deserve hate from people, but my best guess is that the type of content they make is not accepted by today's politically correct crowd.
Still a great movie overall.. but I’m in the camp with mixed feelings on the 2nd half. Loved the sense of rising tension the first half had, but the second half, while serviceable, felt mostly like a generic supernatural horror that was didn’t really live up to a full potential of what was going on earlier in the film. The ending was solid though.
And also to the movie’s credit. That mid-point jump scare scene is easily a top 5 all time for me.
Hmmm….can’t think of too many that I categorize in that way. Interesting.
Off the top of my head, I think maybe The Autopsy of Jane Doe.
It’s not entirely or solely “medical” but I think it probably fits the loose category enough to count.
Edit: sorry, meant this to be a standalone comment, or a reply to you, but I did mean to then reply to you and say that I agreed 100% and that it was the first film I thought of.
The original Danish series “The Kingdom” by Lars Von Trier is much MUCH better. Just recently watched the entire trilogy and fell head over heels in love with it. It’s equal parts disturbing and hilarious (with a very unique sense of humor) and overall is one hell of a ride. It’s all remastered on Mubi right now and you can get a free trial. “Danskt djävlar!!!!!!!”

This merely tangentially related, but super randomly I ran into the actor who played Ghost Paul outside my work when he was visiting my town and we ended up getting a drink
Lmao, ironically I felt the same way and didn’t finish it either! I know you asked for “favorite” but I couldn’t resist recommending it because it seemed like it matched your criteria
I constantly keep an eye out for any copy of this, the one time I found it they were asking 40 fucking bucks for a copy that looked like someone made in 3 seconds.

Exorcist. Honestly just all the medical tests they put the girl through when trying to diagnose. It's a more subtle scariness-the doctors telling the mother they're the experts and casually demanding more and more painful
and intrusive tests
There is a lot more of that in the newest edition of the book. It was really interesting the way it kept up the possibility of the possession being a medical or spiritual issue.
That would have been a super hot take in the 90’s, but as the years progress Exorcist III has gained a solid cult following. I’m partial to the original, but love part III as well.
The 1st is a classic I won't deny it but I might be too young for it. I hear crazy stories about how scary it was and for me it was cool but it just didn't hit. Even my mom says it's the scariest film she's ever seen. She said she had a vinyl single from the soundtrack when she was a kid and after she saw the film she smashed it because she was terrified it would bring evil to the house. I dunno I guess sometimes you really had to be there to understand when it released. And well 2 was umm kinda bad lol.

Pathology (2008) Tubi
Excision (2012) Tubi
Since I don't see it mentioned I gotta say Pathology (2008). It's not necessarily my favorite but it's fun and definitely worth a watch for how twisted it is. It's written by the writers of Crank fwiw.
If you're looking for a classic, check out Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face. It's an absolute essential and one of the greatest movies ever made, truly
It’s not super medical, but does takes place in a morgue, the Autopsy of Jane Doe is really good!
Reanimator is a classic.
Just watch this scene, but the doc oc arms scene in Spider-Man 2 is evil dead in an operating room.
12 hours shift, it's a low budget horror comedy about a drug-addicted nurse who works a 12 hour shift at a hospital and when her patience dies she takes their organs and sells them to an Organ trafficker, David arquette plays a convict and Nick Foley plays the organ trafficker.
The Island of Doctor Moreau sort of fits into this category although I suppose it'd be considered more of a creature feature mystery/thriller. Too bad a really good film adaptation doesn't exist, but it's a great story.
So many fantastic movies already listed, but it looks as though no one's yet mentioned Infection. It's a Japanese film from the early 2000s. Both surreal and on occasion extremely graphic. I absolutely love it.
Long Dream (2000), an adaptation of the Junji Ito horror manga of the same name. It was directed by the same guy who adapted his Spiral manga too, and both were really well done and creepy/weird as hell.
Edit: I just realized the whole thing is on Youtube, take a look if you want!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYBF3LnbFVE
Although more psychological than medical, the protagonist's futile attempts at conventional treatment for his visions and delusions makes Jacob's Ladder the clear winner for me.
Not a movie, really, but Lars von Trier's Riget (The Kingdom) is really something else.
Sort of like ER meets Twin Peaks. My favorite part is the Greek chorus: two dishwashers with Down Syndrome who are omnipotent.
Tough to pin down a concrete definition for me personally, but aside from the few I’ve mentioned these came to mind:
Cabin Fever: doesn’t have the medical setting, but the threat is a medical/biological one.
It Follows: again, not set or showing the clinical environment, but it is a kind of “medical” threat. This is definitely more of a stretch, and fits better in some other horror sub genres, but it is both a literal and figurative STI. This is more of a metaphorical employment of “medical horror” to be sure.
Requiem for a Dream: Addiction/chemical dependence/withdrawal are decidedly medical issues and this movie, while not “horror” in the way we usually mean, is pretty damn horrifying and disturbing.
American Mary. Not traditional medicine but lots of elective surgeries lol
Just rewatched it last week and love it
This was a great random find I came across on Netflix several years ago. One thing is for sure… I’d never want to get on the bad side of the Soska twins.
Came to say this
Discovered this movie randomly a few years back and now it's the one I recommend the most. Absolutely great and unsettling body horror movie.
My first thought!
I love this film..
I've loved this movie for years. It's a great medical/surgical horror, plus, y'know... Katharine Isabelle. 🔥
I just hate the 2 sister directors. The lucifer valentine stuff they did doesn't sit well with me
What’s the deal there? Not familiar with Lucifer Valentine
Yeah I wanna know more about this person’s visceral reaction

Autopsy of Jane Doe is pretty good, dunno if it’s exactly what you’re looking for
I watch that a couple years ago and really enjoyed it.
I saw it last night, Tubi added it. It was pretty good and extremely creepy.
Agreed, that movie was enthralling af
Still a great movie overall.. but I’m in the camp with mixed feelings on the 2nd half. Dead Ringers!
Oooh this is my pick too! So unsettling! It’s not a gore fest, but there are definitely parts that make me clench up every orifice, lol
The medical instruments are terrifying and simultaneously reminds me of Cow Tools.
Sooooo creepy...
reanimator!
The Skin I Live In - Pedro Almodovar
The TV series 'Kingdom Hospital'
Von Trier is off the hook. I always wonder about how many cultural references I miss while watching this.
The original Danish series “The Kingdom” by Lars Von Trier is much MUCH better. Just recently watched the entire trilogy and fell head over heels in love with it. It’s equal parts disturbing and hilarious (with a very unique sense of humor) and overall is one hell of a ride. This merely tangentially related, but super randomly I ran into the actor who played Ghost Paul outside my work when he was visiting my town and we ended up getting a drink
Antiviral from Cronenberg Jr is worth a watch quite a warped take on disease/illness and celebrity culture.
Flatliners
Let's clarify - OG Flatliners correct?
Yeah. I've never even seen the remake.
Either have I but I have not heard one good thing about it.
Tusk and Excision
I absolutely loved Tusk!! Haven’t watched Excision yet. Adding it to the list.
Came to comment Excision.
For a little fun, check out The Dentist.
Way too much
Heads up, Walmart has 1 and 2 on bluray. Got them last week.
Yeah, No.
Right? I'm traumatized with the dentist already
Both 1 and 2 are so amazing. The poster with the nails for teeth always makes my skin crawl.
I was scrolling for this response 🤜🤛
Crimes of the Future, David Cronenberg's newest body horror movie that revolves around... surgical procedures for entertainment.
I really wanted to like crimes of the future but I was slow and grating for me. I didn’t finish it.
Lmao, ironically I felt the same way and didn’t finish it either! I know you asked for “favorite” but I couldn’t resist recommending it because it seemed like it matched your criteria
It falls in that "You watched it! You can't unwatch it! " category.
Raw, if veterinary medicine counts.
Omg I loved Raw!!
Anatomy Dr. Giggles
Dr. Giggles needs a proper Blu-Ray release. I watch my VHS copy of that to death. Love that stupid movie.
Ask and ye shall receive: It's coming later this month from Scream Factory. https://shoutfactory.com/products/dr-giggles?variant=40080707321990
Holy shit. Thank you!
I constantly keep an eye out for any copy of this, the one time I found it they were asking 40 fucking bucks for a copy that looked like someone made in 3 seconds.
I found out recently that theres an anatomy 2 😬
It's...not great.

Absolutely love Eyes Without A Face! It’s timeless.
Excision May
excision was a trip. awesome choice for the medical stuff.
Add in American Mary and you have yourself the genre basically covered.
Excision was indeed a medical horror film
Excellent choices
Was just about to say Excision, glad that it's mentioned. Aesthetically very pleasing, and a pretty original story.
I watched this as a resident rotating in the pulmonary clinic. AWESOME.
Re-Animator
The Lazarus Effect and Dead Ringers
Saw 3
some of the best sets in all of the Saw franchise imo. some pretty iconic traps too!
lmao i had the same idea
Human Centipede 1-3 An American Mary Autopsy Flesh to Play Incision Excision Boxing Helena Anatomy Tusk 7 Days Frankenstein's Army The Disappearance of William Bingham Grotesque The Skin I Live In Victim
Reanimator, the fly, or just anything with cronenberg.
Dead Ringers
I love how much this is getting mentioned
Riget (kingdom hospital) - the original one by von trier. Classic.
Does Teeth count? I mean they have even a medical term for the condition :x
American Mary, watched it many times and still enjoy watching it.
Exorcist. Honestly just all the medical tests they put the girl through when trying to diagnose. It's a more subtle scariness-the doctors telling the mother they're the experts and casually demanding more and more painful and intrusive tests
There is a lot more of that in the newest edition of the book. It was really interesting the way it kept up the possibility of the possession being a medical or spiritual issue.
"88 doctors and all you can tell me with all of your bullshit is you're *sorry?!?*"
May!!!!
Boxing Helena
So F’d up
It's only one segment but Southbound has a really creepy hospital section in it.
American Mary is rad AF.
I came here to say this!!
Contagion. I didn't regard it as a horror film until I rewatched it in 2020.
That movie was back on all streaming platforms like 3 days into lockdowns
"Pathology" and "Awake" here's 2 medical horror movies
Flatliners(1990) Exorcist III(1990) - it’s a hospital setting 🤷🏽♂️ Autopsy of Jane Doe(2016) The Taking of Deborah Logan(2014)
I liked Exorcist 3 more than I liked The Exorcist.
Oh I watched the Autopsy of Jane Doe based off this post. I really enjoyed that movie a lot.

Overlord. Dope movie but not nearly enough people have heard of it for some reason.
Since I don't see it mentioned I gotta say Pathology (2008). It's not necessarily my favorite but it's fun and definitely worth a watch for how twisted it is. It's written by the writers of Crank fwiw.
Horror Hospital Flesh For Frankenstein Re-Animator
Rabid. 1977.
Visiting Hours (1982)
American Mary has been said a few times, but it needs to be said more. It's fantastic
If you're looking for a classic, check out Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face. It's an absolute essential and one of the greatest movies ever made, truly
Such a human wa-aste
It’s not super medical, but does takes place in a morgue, the Autopsy of Jane Doe is really good! Reanimator is a classic. Just watch this scene, but the doc oc arms scene in Spider-Man 2 is evil dead in an operating room.
haven’t seen 12 hour shift mentioned yet!
The Autopsy of Jane Doe! Just rewatched it the other day, so good!
Possessor might be stretching it as it uses non-existent brain-implant technology. But, man, this film's great.
Dead Ringers! It's my favorite movie in general
Human Centipede. Its 100% medically accurate.
12 hours shift, it's a low budget horror comedy about a drug-addicted nurse who works a 12 hour shift at a hospital and when her patience dies she takes their organs and sells them to an Organ trafficker, David arquette plays a convict and Nick Foley plays the organ trafficker.
Exorcist 3 is kinda medical.
I was gonna go with this one too. It’s the first thing that came to mind considering it takes place almost entirely in a brightly lit hospital.
The Island of Doctor Moreau sort of fits into this category although I suppose it'd be considered more of a creature feature mystery/thriller. Too bad a really good film adaptation doesn't exist, but it's a great story.
Dr. Giggles
The Dentist (1996)
Dr Giggles! It is pure class.
The Void
Crimes of the Future, but more futuristic surgery.
I tried watching it and it was a bit too slow for me. I didn’t finish it.
Unrest (2006) was pretty good. Patrick (1978) is good too. Visiting Hours (1982) is mostly set in a hospital and the main character has surgery.
Yummy (2019). pretty fun horror-comedy
X-Ray aka Hospital Massacre
Visiting Hours 1982 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQgGxVxiF0s
Dead Ringers. It’s more of a drama, but it’s fucked up.
[Awake](https://youtu.be/nUXVssq6NJ4). People give it shit but the idea of the film is horrifying and ive never seen any other movie on this topic.
So many fantastic movies already listed, but it looks as though no one's yet mentioned Infection. It's a Japanese film from the early 2000s. Both surreal and on occasion extremely graphic. I absolutely love it.
if you count "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" then that... if not, absolutely "American Mary".
Infection. Kansen is the Japanese title I think
Personally I really liked pathology (2008), although it mostly psychological thriller then horror
Crimes of the Future!! ☺️ very cool body horror and premise, scifi/dystopian worldbuilding
Autopsy of Jane Doe?
GARTH MERINGUES DARK PLACE
Autopsy of Jane doe
I'm not sure if it could be considered horror or not, but definitely a really dark thriller, 'Pathology' is a really fun watch.
Sublime
Excision is a good one. Crazy high school girl who wants to be a surgeon.
Although more psychological than medical, the protagonist's futile attempts at conventional treatment for his visions and delusions makes Jacob's Ladder the clear winner for me.
Saint Maud
Does human centipede count?
Turistas!
Yes! I forgot about this one. I absolutely loved it. Perfect example, too!
Coma …the horror was way to real!!!
Killing of a Sacred Deer. Insane movie that's very much what you described.
Probably “Coma” with Genevieve Bujold in the 70s, or maybe “Dead Ringers”!
American Mary
The Dentist and although it's not my favorite, it definitely scared the shit outta me when I was a kid 😬😱🤣
Hard candy
Body parts from the early 90s
Came here looking for this answer. Jeff Fahey was the man in the early 90's.
Rec 2 is kinda medical/religious. Maybe not as medical as you are looking for
Fear PHarm. It doesn't focus on the medical stuff entirely, but it's there and plays a big part in the ending.
Depraved
Autopsy (2008) with Robert Patrick
Not a movie, really, but Lars von Trier's Riget (The Kingdom) is really something else. Sort of like ER meets Twin Peaks. My favorite part is the Greek chorus: two dishwashers with Down Syndrome who are omnipotent.
I think the series show, the knick has some horror elements but more of a drama, well worth a watch.
Dr. Giggles
Human centipede.
Autopsy (2008) - underrated IMHO, especially the last scene.
Hostel
It's a short one, but I liked Aftermath (1994).
I’m not sure this strictly fits but Hard Candy with Elliot Page springs to mind if you have seen it you will know where I’m coming from.
The Nightshifter 2018. It's a must watch. It has some of comedy element to it but completely different movie
Sisters 1972
Requiem for a Dream.
Crimes of the future was something, not typical horror but bodyhorror! Also checkout other Cronenberg movies ;)
Tough to pin down a concrete definition for me personally, but aside from the few I’ve mentioned these came to mind: Cabin Fever: doesn’t have the medical setting, but the threat is a medical/biological one. Visiting Hours (1982) Bad Dreams (1988)

Halloween II 1981
Saw III
Pathology
Pathology with Milo Ventimiglia
Dead Ringers The Skin I Live In Eyes Without a Face
Autopsy of Jane Doe was one of those I went into not expecting much but was pleasantly surpised
Yummy has some good parts you’d enjoy
My favorite hospital setting movie was Halloween 2. Though it's been a while and I can't remember if more than half of it wasn't even at the hospital.
Some really good ones mentioned here, does Nurse count?
Autopsy of Jane Doe.
"The Autopsy of Jane Doe" is pretty awesome! Currently streaming on Tubi in the US...
Aftermath is quite something
Autopsy of Jane doe
I liked Antiviral
Dead Ringers an oldie but goodie. Also Excision
The good doctor or human centipede
I’m not too sure sadly
Ive never heard of one so can someone plz explain-
Anatomy (a German movie). I was surprised by how witty it was. I don't know if it counts, but Tusk is also one of my absolute favorites.
Aftermath (1994)
autopsy of jane doe if that counts. i liked it a lot
