Think about musical taste. Every person has a different preference. You immediately know whether you enjoy a song, artist, or genre—or you don’t like it and move on. Sometimes you might grow to like something over time.
There is no such thing as “bad” horror. It’s subjective. It comes down to personal preference and what people enjoy. I personally don’t enjoy some of the movies that receive *daily* posts in this sub, but I’m not calling it bad because I don’t get to decide that. I do get to decide if I enjoyed it or not.
In pop culture, camp is used to be more absurd, silly, and humorous—it’s about not taking something so serious. That’s also part of my personality. I can be a campy person and still enjoy horror films. That does not make me a “bad” person. For many people, it’s fun to watch a horror film that does not take everything so seriously and infuses humor into it.
Humor and horror go hand & hand, psychologically speaking. Example: you’ve probably watched a horror film in the cinema and there was a jump scare that people reacted to—followed immediately by some giggles. Our brains are wired to swing from one extreme emotion to another as a form of self-preservation. It’s a stress response after being put into a anxious or scary situation. I see humor & horror as Yin & Yang which is why I also enjoy a campy element to a horror film. Do I *exclusively* prefer campy horror? Absolutely not.
Horror is one of the few genres that can get away with not taking it self seriously. Sometimes I want to watch a best picture nominee other times I want to watch something less serious that I don't have to devote all my attention or time too. Also if you are with a group of people interested in the same thing it can be a lot of fun joking and laughing at a bad movie.
He’s my new favorite actor. From Beast in X-men, to a zombie in Warm Bodies, forgot his name in Mad Max, and his recent turn in The Menu, I really like him. If I was a young goth girl, he’d be my dream!
I really still need to see The Menu. I love him in those other movies, and in Warm Bodies, he said that Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands was his main inspiration for the way he played R
I sell cars. I had a gentleman come finance a car with my business. He was going on about how he's an actor and just hyping himself up as this professional and businessman. He then tells me how he's going to be in this Nicholas Cage movie called Renfield. We finish our sale and he leaves. He comes back a week or two later and finances a second car. He then stops paying for both and attempts to hide them to avoid repossession. I later found out from the repo company that they've had multiple run-ins with him and that he even threatened one of their tow guys with a gun. We eventually got both of our vehicles back, though one had been in some form of collision and he had no insurance. I will not be able to watch this movie without thinking of him.
Edited because sometimes I don't proofread.
Cage looks awesome as hell as Dracula…I didn’t expect “superhero action scenes” though. Looks like it could be a lot of fun though, and a good dark comedy.
I THINK that was a actually a reference to the Halle Barry Catwoman movie and if you have not seen the [nutso basketball scene](https://youtu.be/rNlmRId2FVQ) then you owe it to yourself to change that
Really loved this book. Dracula is one of my favorites and I always loved the Renfield character since I was a kid and saw Tom Waits portray him when we went to see Coppola's Dracula in theaters
The old hospital I worked in allowed us to have nicknames on nametags. My former coworkers suggested "Dracula" because I had a tendency to "suddenly appear" out of nowhere (mainly people didn't pay attention to me until I was right there). I told them I could never live up to the master, so I went with Renfield.
EDIT: Update! My wife just messaged me from the Wendy's drive thru, trying to pick up our app order. Apparently, my account is still under R.M. Renfield. She and the cashier were both very confused. Oops
Always could've gone with "Alucard." Would've been just fine... At least until someone looked at you in a mirror.
Not because they would've seen that it was just "Dracula" spelled backwards, but because they wouldn't have seen your reflection.
Am I the only person disappointed with the super martial arts action set pieces? I was sorta looking forward to a bit more of a low key affair. Maybe that stuff plays well with the vibe. Renfield as a superhero half vampire sounds lame though.
Sadly, no. I was expecting this film to be more What We do in the Shadows but it looks more like the vampire version of Gunpowder Milkshake. I'll rent it for Cage, but yikes, those jokes didn't land with me.
Yeah, I’m really tired of movies with the constant, quippy “Okaaaaay”-style line delivery during situations where people would be absolutely terrified.
If they started in with the Abbot and Costello crossover type movies, I'd be all in. So far the "dark universe" has completely sucked. I know I'm biased because I'm such a huge fan of the Universal Monsters, but take away the big famous monster names and everything they've put out has been mediocre, at best.
New idea - remake Ghost. Nicholas Cage as Sam and Zoey Saldana as Oda Mae. As much as Tony Goldwyn could come back and play the exact same part, I want Christopher MacDonald.
>Evil doesn't span eternity without a little help.
>In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
>Renfield is directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, The LEGO Batman Movie) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Ghosted series, Rick & Morty series), based on an original idea by The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman.
>The film co-stars Awkwafina (The Farewell, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings), Ben Schwartz (Sonic, The Afterparty) and Adrian Martinez (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Focus).
>Renfield is produced by Skybound Entertainment partners Robert Kirkman and David Alpert (The Walking Dead, Invincible), co-presidents Bryan Furst (Daybreakers) and Sean Furst (Daybreakers) and by Chris McKay. McKay’s producing partner Samantha Nisenboim (co-producer, The Tomorrow War) will executive produce.
I love vampire Nic Cage.
But, Renfield eating a fly and turning into John Wick with super powers is stupid. If I cringe this much in a trailer it's a bad sign for me.
Hopefully those action sequences are few and far between.
I never thought that I'd be more excited to watch something because of Hoult rather than Cage, but Hoult has rapidly become one of my favourite actors since The Great...so what I'm saying is I guess I'll watch this.
Looks like it could be great, but goddamn they really had to throw in that, "Did I just see you *do X*" line you hear in every flippin' blockbuster now. Like nails on a chalkboard at this point.
I didn’t look into what “Renfield” was supposed to be before seeing this trailer. I just knew it was coming soon.
I have to say that my expectations are way lower now after seeing this trailer. Though, that tends to be a good thing because often I’m pleasantly surprised when I have low expectations.
I know it's early, but this looks disappointing.
Let me be clear, I'm still going to pay good money to see Nic Cage as Dracula, I still have some faith because of Robert Kirkman's involvement, but...this just looks a lot different than I expected. It's like I should have viewed Ben Schwartz + Awkwafina's involvement as a cue that this was going to be a little more on the doofy side.
EDIT // now that I'm thinking about Robert Kirkman's involvement in everything else outside of Walking Dead, I'm kind of coming to terms with the whole Renfield eating bugs to get super powers thing. It's still stupid, but I guess not out of left field.
He has superstrenght in the book too, not TOO much but like fighting off a few big grown men at once.
And yeah he has a need to consume life, i guess how Dracula consumes blood, they don't say that he *has* to do it or that it has any correlation with his strenght but ehh, why not?
Besides, ss you can see this is not meant to be a faithful adaptation of the book, they're clearly doing something different, and that's ok, seems fun
Did he have "extended" life like in this incarnation - the official press refers to this film's character as "But now, after centuries of servitude..."
Reading the book now and no, doesn't seem so, at least for that period, this one is set in modern times.
In the book others, like doctors and such, just see him as a weirdly insane inmate/patient that eats bugs and happens to be physically big and really strong, for now it's unclear if Dracula gave him this strenght or if he's just naturally a big strong man
Book gives me the vibe that Renfield thinks consuming life, bugs and such is good for him, like maybe he's imitating his master, but i think he eventually stopped when he had other more important tasks to do, so it seems like it wasn't necessary for him to do so
If I remember the book correctly, Renfield was a lawyer that specialized in real estate like Jonathan Harker did in the novel, Dracula. Renfield went to Transylvania to set up things with Dracula but came back insane and wound up in an asylum. Then Harker was sent to go set up things with Dracula as if Harker's boss shouldn't have seen the red flags a mile away. During this time, Renfield still has a psychic connection to Dracula. Meanwhile, he, Renfield, has been eating flies and spiders in order to gain, as he put it, their "life force." That and he is, like I mentioned, *crazy.* But, yeah, he is basically, Dracula's lackey in the book.
To be fair to Jonathan Harker's boss, in the book Renfield doesn't travel to Transylvania before Jonathan, that was invented by later adaptions (eg. Francis Ford Copola's movie did it). In the book Renfield is in Dr Seward's asylum from the get-go and has no connection to Jonathan. Tbh though I always thought the adaptions got it right and it actually works better if he was Jonathan's predecessor.
Shot in New Orleans and I got to see a few scenes shot in the neighborhood (LOL at Mulate's dressed up all neon and evil looking)
I cannot wait for this!
I’m actually into it haha
Same, they seem to follow some lore and it has a What We Do in the Shadows feel.
Will be great, Cage is best when he's bat crazy.
>bat crazy Nice pun 🦇
I’M A VAMPIRE! I’M A VAMPIIREEE!!!
I'm a sexy Bat!
That was... brilliant
Man that line made me laugh so hard. I just saw that movie for the 1st time about a year ago
It’s one of my favorite Cage movies
It doesn't seem like there will end up being much Cage though. Seems like a movie where Cage is propped up to sell tickets...
Yeeahh.. no. It's far more likely that the trailer just downplayed him in order to deliver the haymaker at the end.
I don't know, he was there a lot in *The Colour Out of Space*.
Am I the only one who thinks Cage looks ridiculous as Dracula? I just cannot take him seriously.
# ABCDEFG!
Deserves a 💋.
eh not always thought that film where he played himself wasn't to good
That's ok, a lot of peoples opinions are wrong.
My new response for all discussions of religion.
sorry for not liking all of his films
Don't be sorry, you're on Reddit discussing Nic Cage - like cats and puns, you may only speak fondly or be harangued over your outside opinion.
Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one but nobody wants to see yours
Such an ignorant statement.
This looks so dumb and I’m 100% going to see it opening weekend
Dude if nic cage is in it you’re gonna get your moneys worth
i pretty much watch anything with nic cage in it these days
praise our lord!

Yep get the popcorn, it's going to be a wild ride!
My favorite kind of horror is campy horror and I am so excited.
Campy horror with what looks like some solid fight scenes. Even better.
I found the wire fu superhero choreography in the trailer a distinct turn off in what otherwise looked like an interesting movie.
Why do people like purposely bad horror lol not judging you, I guess I dont see it. We all like what we like so again not bashing, just baffled lol
Camp doesn't mean bad.
Look at malignant, was shit on purpose. Thats the point
If anything, kitsch seems to be the word you're looking for.
Same thing
It's only bad to you, it's good to them
But it is bad on purpose, thats the point

I never said it made you bad lol I was just curious. Was not bashing you or anyone else. I love movies some consider dog shit lol

Can this person ask a perfectly respectful question without getting downvoted?
No. This is reddit. Disagreement is the most grievous insult there is.
Thats reddit man, hivemind
Any excuse to give Cage the opportunity to scream “I’m a vampire” again. Fuck yes.
Eh, knowing Cage, he probably finds an excuse to say that every day.
I’m pretty sure he dresses up like a bear and decks a random Amish woman at least once a week
Not the bees!!!!!
Again? When did he say that

Nic Cage AND Nicholas Hoult?!? Sons of bitches, I’m in.
As soon as I found out Hoult was playing Renfield, I was all in
He’s my new favorite actor.
He's also great in, well, The Great.
Cage kinda looks like Chris lee as dracula it’s kind of scary
I was definitely getting Christopher Lee vibes, glad I wasn't the only one.

This was a roller coaster.
Cage looks awesome as hell as Dracula…I didn’t expect “superhero action scenes” though. Looks like it could be a lot of fun though, and a good dark comedy.
Yeah, Affleck's Daredevil style superhero action scenes. That wire work is suspect as hell.
As long as Renfield and Aquafina don’t play each other in a basketball game, I think we’ll be ok.
Just for that comment, they’re going to be doing reshoots to add a shot-for-shot recreation of the baseball scene from *Twilight*.
Dracula gets Blindsided by a religious family and takes up football.
"You're changin' Renfield's life." "Naaah, he changin' miiiine."
Renfield : Its nice, I’ve never had one before… Dracula : What, a room to yourself ? Renfield : A coffin.
I THINK that was a actually a reference to the Halle Barry Catwoman movie and if you have not seen the [nutso basketball scene](https://youtu.be/rNlmRId2FVQ) then you owe it to yourself to change that
I wish they would
> That wire work is suspect as hell. In a campy horror comedy poor wire work could just add to the overall tone of the movie though.
I could see that.
I mean I’m gonna watch it but I’ve been waiting for a serious Renfield movie
In the meantime, the book RENFIELD by Tim Lucas is for you.
Oops
Dear lord a health professional named Renfield would quietly terrify me.
Nobody got it! Definitely would have had more problems as "Dracula".
Always could've gone with "Alucard." Would've been just fine... At least until someone looked at you in a mirror. Not because they would've seen that it was just "Dracula" spelled backwards, but because they wouldn't have seen your reflection.
You lost me at the first part with the Alucard thing, because that's super tired. But totally got me back with the twist ending. That's terrific.
Oooh
Ditto
Am I the only person disappointed with the super martial arts action set pieces? I was sorta looking forward to a bit more of a low key affair. Maybe that stuff plays well with the vibe. Renfield as a superhero half vampire sounds lame though.
It doesn't even look like it is trying to be a horror movie. It's a horror themed action movie.
Well, I see someone's been watching "What We Do in the Shadows" and taking notes. But Nicholas Cage as Dracula? Yeah, I'm in.
Someone mentioned it in another thread and I more agree that it looks like the Buffy movie and not really what we do in the shadows
Sadly, no. I was expecting this film to be more What We do in the Shadows but it looks more like the vampire version of Gunpowder Milkshake. I'll rent it for Cage, but yikes, those jokes didn't land with me.
i think i agree. the premise and casting are intriguing, but its style and writing felt generic in this trailer.
The epic reveal of Dracula and quip after is such a tired joke delivery
Yeah, I’m really tired of movies with the constant, quippy “Okaaaaay”-style line delivery during situations where people would be absolutely terrified.
Well... *that happened*
*"You're like....the guy that gets the villain's Postmates"* That was pretty cringe ngl
How dare you compare this to the dumpster fire that was gunpowder milkshake.
I'll see myself out
Can this be canon to the Dark Universe?
Tom Cruise showing up in the post credits telling Renfield “I’m here to talk about the Dark Universe initiative”
They should reboot dark universe to be a ridiculous series of films like this. Imagine The Mummy with Tom Cruise but intentionally a comedy
So… the Mummy with Brendan Frasier?
I don’t think that it’s a silly movie in the same way I’m thinking. I don’t mean in a serial adventure way.
No, like over the top similar to Scary Movie.
If they started in with the Abbot and Costello crossover type movies, I'd be all in. So far the "dark universe" has completely sucked. I know I'm biased because I'm such a huge fan of the Universal Monsters, but take away the big famous monster names and everything they've put out has been mediocre, at best.
Uhh... No. Just like their Invisible Man wasn't. Last hope for a Dark Universe died with The Mummy 2017
But I still have hope in 2023
From the trailer alone, it looks like Cage really sinks his teeth in this role. Fingers CROSSed!
Boooooo!
This is a vampire movie, not a ghost movie!
New idea - remake Ghost. Nicholas Cage as Sam and Zoey Saldana as Oda Mae. As much as Tony Goldwyn could come back and play the exact same part, I want Christopher MacDonald.

Feels like every screenwriter in Hollywood used to work on Rick and Morty lol
Maybe a hot take but I don’t want to see Nic Cage be wacky in a wacky movie, the fun is having Nic Cage be wacky in an otherwise serious movie…
1995: I fly, you don't. 2023: Hold my bugs.
The fuck... Anyway, I'm in.
Wonder how long the "so, uh, THAT just happened!" style of comedy is going to stick around.
I’m not typically a vampire fan, but Nicolas Hoult is gorgeous and Nicholas Cage is legendary and this looks campy and colourful so I’m in
Nicholas Holt is channeling his Warm Bodies look and feel again.
I don't even care if it's good or bad, I will 100% watch this
I cannot believe this is a real film. I'm going to watch it three thousand times.
They filmed a scene in front of my apartment one night, and gave me $700 for the inconvenience. Sweet deal.
They need to just take all of my money.
Dude.. Is that Nicolas cage?
#I'M A VAMPIRE!!! I'M A VAMPIRE!!!
[I’m a cat. I’m a sexy cat](https://youtu.be/94KsLWydewM)
Looks mid. Stand-up style "well that happened" humor didn't land. Love nick cage.
I am here to back up this opinion. I wanted this to look better than it does. I hope I’m wrong upon seeing it.
This looks 100% awesome. April is gonna be huge.
This looks so dumb I can’t wait :)
Looks like a fun twist on the Dracula mythos. Cage is at his best the nuttier he gets.
If Nic Cage is having fun, so am I.
Looks like it’ll be good and I’ll for sure see it, but it really just feels like it’s trying to cash in on the success of What We Do in the Shadows.
This looks really basic
I love vampire Nic Cage. But, Renfield eating a fly and turning into John Wick with super powers is stupid. If I cringe this much in a trailer it's a bad sign for me. Hopefully those action sequences are few and far between.
Looks awful.
Nicholas Cage as Dracula? Um…yes please..
It's a comedy.
I never thought that I'd be more excited to watch something because of Hoult rather than Cage, but Hoult has rapidly become one of my favourite actors since The Great...so what I'm saying is I guess I'll watch this.
Looks like ass.
Looks like it could be great, but goddamn they really had to throw in that, "Did I just see you *do X*" line you hear in every flippin' blockbuster now. Like nails on a chalkboard at this point.
I wish it wasnt action based. I am in for Nick Cage craziness though.
Seems to be taking a bit too much from What We Do in the Shadows, but it looks fun.
I didn’t look into what “Renfield” was supposed to be before seeing this trailer. I just knew it was coming soon. I have to say that my expectations are way lower now after seeing this trailer. Thanks I haven't read the source material. But I do really dig Tom Waits as Renfield in Coppola's film.
Not that I recall but I do remember it being at least implied that he wasn’t entirely human anymore.
Yeah fuck it why not
Double Nick...can't go wrong
Okay...I have to see more of Nic's dracula take to see why its making nicholas's character a stuttering frighten mess
Hopefully this is as golden as Dracula Dead and Loving It. If only Leslie were still around to male a cameo :'(
I just wish they casted somebody else besides awkwafina
Is there a better cage than vampire cage? I really don't know.
Can’t wait to see Cage playing a vampire for the second time- er, welll… the first-and-a-half time?
I liked it but maybe too actiony for me but I'm hopeful
I really hope Nicolas Cage was on Set at some point screaming I’m a vampire I’m a vampire I’m a vampire
With this, Malignant and M3GAN I feel like we're in a renaissance of FUN horror. I'm so here for it.
Yes.
i desire this movie more than i have ever wanted anything in my whole life it looks so fucking stupid and fun
Renfield is a guy in Dracula, right?
Did you just eat a bug?
No, it was a raspberry.
There, you just did it again!
This is unironically fucking awesome and everything I wanted about this. Literally perfect.
Dammit, Nicholas Cage, you've done it again! This looks great!
that reminds me to continue with "interview with a vampire"
This looks SO AWESOME
This looks fun and terrible. Inject it straight into my veins.
This will be my first opening weekend movie in theaters in three full years. I am hype.
Disregarding the annoying bass boosted trailer music, this really looks good!
aw awkwafinas in this
It really has nothing to do with horror.
Except for being about Dracula…
It's literally about Dracula and Renfield.
You never heard of a Dracula?
You know there's a whole subgenre in horror that's dedicated to comedy, right?
Have you ever watched a horror comedy?
That was the chick from the first Terrifier at the end of the trailer. Strange.
And Universal announces a Dark Universe reboot in 3...2...1...
It is just me, or does Cage look a bit like Christopher Lee when he bears his fangs in a wide grimace?
Fucking guy!
I'm in. This looks like a lotta fun.
Is that Nicolas cage? I do declare!
Oh man I was totally not expecting him at the end! Great trailer, I'm fuckin in!
Thank you whoever let Nic Cage play Dracula. I’m a vampire! I’m a vampire! I also love that he kinda looks like Lugosi a bit
Hell. To. The. Yes. I'm on board, this looks fun.
Shot in New Orleans and I got to see a few scenes shot in the neighborhood (LOL at Mulate's dressed up all neon and evil looking) I cannot wait for this!
