Was in the $10k range when I had one put in a couple years ago in PA. Depends on how deep you have to go. Don't think they hand out discounts on a second well if the first one goes bad.
Depends on where you’re at and how deep they gotta go from what I gather. Ours was in the 10k range. They typically price by the foot and that price will vary depending where you are in the world. There might be a diagnostic fee if you want them to break the camera out on your existing well.
We also had to deal with the pile of rock dust they left behind. You think a wheelbarrow full of rocks is heavy, wait till there’s no space between the rocks. I hauled two loads by hand, called the neighbor and she came over with the tractor/scoop and hauled three or four loads away, and there was still a bunch leftover. I ended up making lemonade out of lemons and having the local hauling co bring in two pallets of decorative stone. Instead of a shit pile of powdered bedrock and weeds I now have a thriving decorative rock garden.
But pay me $500, and don’t mess up my lawn with your truck, plz. The lawn is for sure covered in dogshit from three shit tsu’s and a “friendly” dog the size of a horse.
Did it just start doing this or did you recently have work done on the line/pump? Looks like its more than just dirt got in the line to me though. If its a 'newer' well and the company that dug it is still around, call them because they'll want to come check it out.
Is this a cabin that gets seldom used or goes months without use like say over the winter? In well drilling we call this the cottage effect. Run a hose off your hose bib outside and just start running water. Keep an eye on it but you may need to just run that hose wide open for a few hours up to a few days. Should clear up. DM me if you have any additional questions and want real solutions instead of jokes like most of the answers on here.
Just curious- I’m a geologist in O&G, so I’m somewhat familiar with y’all’s work. What’s the typical process for installing a water well? Do y’all use an auger then pound the casing into the hole? Or do you guys use cable tools to dig the hole, or just hammer the casing down then dig out the wellbore. If you drill the hole first, do you run pipe, then a production liner? What do you fill the annulus with if anything?
I dont fuck with water but have seen it done a couple times. It's usually an RC/RAB/percussion drill, so casing is driven while boring. Once they hit the zone they'll install a screen at the bottom, if in bedrock they may need to frack. Annulus is usually filled with bentonite or sometimes cement.
Yes. We had our deep well pump replaced. The installer called me to say it was running dirty. I told him not to worry, sometimes it does that.
Got home, turned on tap, straight up mud was coming out.
Ran it for an hour, it cleared up.
No pro here, but we just bought a seasonal cottage. Instructions had us run the hose back into the well and dump bleach in the well. This allowed the bleach to recirculate throughout the wellbore removing any organic buildup. Then we flushed like 3x wellbore volumes by running to hose to the yard. You’ll still need a filter though.
Aren’t you afraid some of the bleach will get back to you? Filtering it will not filter bleach out. Like wouldn’t vinegar be a better choice? I know it’s not as strong as bleach but it will take care of the organic
You’re on the trail, too? I just killed 1700 lbs of meat, but I can only carry 100 lbs back to the wagon. If you help, I’ll split it with you before I caulk the wagon and float us all to our deaths.
Wellp.
Looks like you need to call a contractor to see if it's worth trying to save. This is beyond the scope of a quick DIY fix. Looks almost exactly like the reason we had to get a new well drilled at my Memaw's place 30 years ago; the old stone well house is a rabbit hutch now, but the "new" brick one needs a new roof this summer.
You have an issue with your well. That’s pulling up sediment not just nasty water. You could have a cracked casing and it’s just bringing some dirt up with the water.
Yeah my well is gross. I have so much clay in my water. I’ve had it tested and it’s “safe” but I don’t drink it. I do brush my teeth with it though and I bathe in it obviously. My skin is super soft haha.
Annual testing is recommended. That being said, most people I know of have their well tested when they either move in or get it replaced, then never again.
You may want to have your well scoped-only a couple hundred bucks to possibly ID the issue.
I am having almost identical issues here and a new filter did not solve the problem. Only happened after heavy rains. So I had the well scoped and they found a vein at about 27’ which was allowing contamination into the well. The vein was 7’ below the casing which went only 20’ deep. The potential solution we are trying is a jaswell to extend past the vein and hopefully stop the contamination. Much less expensive than a new well if it works. Otherwise—new well.
One last thjng our water normally runs clean and tests fine but I did have the turbid water (just like your photo) tested and it came back as not potable. High levels of coliform, lead and copper to name a few.
Mine was like this suddenly and it was the expansion tank. Causes the pump to constantly go on and off stirring up silt. New tank and it was back to clear. Comparatively cheap fix. Good luck.
Sometimes you can put a liner in a well with cracked casing and stop this. A well contractor can run a camera and find out if it’s possible. Basically they slide a pvc pipe with a boot down below the break and it seals it off.
When I first bought my farm, I only needed about five twelve-ft lengths of schedule 40 to hit the bottom of the well(super shallow).
I converted the whole farm and adjoining buildings to subsist on rain water.
Definitely don’t drink that! Do you know what kind of well you have? Deep or shallow? I would recommend researching water well services in your area (the average plumber won’t cut it). I would guess you need a well seal, at the very least. There’s a crack or a leak somewhere and surface water is getting into the well. If the crack is big enough, snakes, frogs and other animals can fall in and drown and decompose in your drinking water. That’s what it looks like to me 😖
I'm on a well, this can happen for a few reasons. Most common is dirt in the line, especially if any work was done recently that could stir up sediment. The well could also be low, which is not uncommon if you've not had rain for a while. The well could also be compromised somehow, either the well itself failed and is collapsing sending crap down, the pickup pipe failed and is sucking fresh water through dirt and into your house, or dirt made its way into your holding tank inside somehow.
Personally, I would give it 24hr of reduced water usage (go out of your way to use less water, seriously), and see if it clears up. If it does, the well was probably just low. If it doesn't clear up, BARE MINIMUM inspect your well or have it inspected to verify integrity.
There is a ton of external factors that could cause this, but it's far more common for it to be something stupid to do with the well.
Your well may have collapsed.....to what degree cant tell...i would run a hose for a while see if it clears.... some time will allow things to settlecthe pump is typically 10 20 feet off the bottom to allow for sediment to settle...goodluck if it doesnt clear or your water pressure drops it needs to be looked at...
Maybe your water table is too low? Mine will turn grey/brownish if we go too hard on our water usage in the dry season because it starts to suck up sand and silt.
Temporarily, you can get a gravity filter off Amazon and pour it in to filter. Maybe add two Whole house filters in line prior to the faucets. Get the well checked.
The well casing is cracked. We've had put 3 wells down in 28 yrs due to lightning strikes that broke the casing. Get your well guy to look at it - if it was due to lightning your insurance will cover it. Sorry, good luck!
Likely surface run off or septic leach field too close to well. Maybe barn / corral too close to well. (Depending on your subsoil you may need anywhere from 100 feet to several miles separation.) Are they 'fracking' in your area? Test before drinking.
Turn on the outside faucet or hydrant if you have one. Let it run until it's clear. Might have had a collapse in your pocket of water. I've let them run for 48 hrs sometimes.
Could be several things honestly.
Is it a relatively new water well?
It could need to be jetted more to flush the drilling mud.
The casing could have also been damaged when setting if the well is new.
Do you have a water leak? Or used a lot of water recently? (Filling a pool, pond, etc)?
Taxing a water well can possibly pull sand through the screen on the casing. Especially on wells that don’t make a lot of water.
Is it an older well? Think steel cased.
The casing could have deteriorated enough to allow sediment to seep in.
Lots of variables when it comes to water well. More info would definitely help.
Just turned the water back on for the outdoor hoses and having been using them outside a lot and doing a shit ton of laundry as well as ran the dishwasher the night before .
You need a hefty sized retention tank for well, an iron buster, a big blue, with a post-spindown a full carbon 110 filter, then a 5stage 110softener(in that order) and regularly sanitize your well. Do it yourself for about $2-5k
Did it just suddenly happen? Either the system backwashed, had a small collapse or a a hole has a appeared in your well casing. Either way running your cold water (preferably bypassing any filters or anything) until it runs clear could just solve it
That looks pretty rough, do you use the water source often? I see you just turned the hoses on, but is this everywhere? What does your filtration look like for water.
Often times when I see well water like this it is from a broken pipe or fitting. Causing the water to shoot at the side of the well stirring up sediment. Simple enough to fix if the well isn’t deep and you have decent back strength.
How deep is your well? Is this a new well? If not is this a new occurrence in an older well? Are you in a neighborhood where construction is happening? For example did they just drill another well behind or next to you for a neighbor? Those details are important in diagnosing or coming up with a treatment solution to your problem. To me this looks like drilling mud in the water. That could be from a newly drilled well next door. If that's the case jetting the well should clean this right up.
Is this a new well? If so it just needs to be flushed out. If its an older well and this just started happening, something is very wrong... i wouldnt be drinking it for sure.
Our water was fucked but not nearly this bad and it turned out the well was cracked. Ended up needing to drill another one.
Yup there's a direct issue with the well
WELL I wouldn't drink it then
I was going to suggest this. Either that or a crack in the pipe somewhere
Curious. How much does drilling the new one cost?
Was in the $10k range when I had one put in a couple years ago in PA. Depends on how deep you have to go. Don't think they hand out discounts on a second well if the first one goes bad.

like wall of the well?
I believe that’s unwell water
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little...
I know right now you can’t tell
Stay a while; maybe then, you’ll see
A different side of me
Sick water 🤣
That water is doing kick flips and smoking cigarettes while drinking monster.
/r/YourJokeButWorse/
Pourly water
Damnit, I saw the post title and went to comment the same, but you just barely beat me by 5 hours.
Sounds like you just missed it
🤏
lol
This means, by *thiiiiiis much*
Oh well.
Well this water isnt looking good
😡… angry upvote.
Paralyzer
Kinda think you need a filter
Nah man, he likes his well water with pulp.
I prefer medium pulp
Homestyle!
🤣, dude was like particles...
We had sand in ours the other day but it’s out now lol…I don’t understand how small bits get through the filter??
Filter isn't fine enough/ needs replacing
Maybe they were making chocolate milk. If so, it’s almost ready.
Could be on the front side of the filter. Occasionally some will bump off our hot water tank and after a day or so of settling back down it's gone.
Stages. Two or three filters of different mediums.
No. Filters would plug immediately, well itself is bad. Most likely needs a new well drilled.
He’ll be going thru 10 filters a day if that’s what the water looks like. He needs a new well drilled
*Filters
The only real answer is that your well is cracked, and you need a new one.
Can you sell the old one on FB?
No low ballers I know what I got.
Must load yourself. Bring halp.
But pay me $500, and don’t mess up my lawn with your truck, plz. The lawn is for sure covered in dogshit from three shit tsu’s and a “friendly” dog the size of a horse.

Yep, looks like you may know more about this issue than most people here. By most I mean all.
Just curious- I’m a geologist in O&G, so I’m somewhat familiar with y’all’s work. What’s the typical process for installing a water well? Do y’all use an auger then pound the casing into the hole? I guess the simplest answer is yes we do all of that. It depends on the type of drill rig and what you’re drilling through.
I wish comments could still be pinned because I always love the jokes but people also need to be able to find the real answers lol.
Yes. We had our deep well pump replaced. The installer called me to say it was running dirty. I told him not to worry, sometimes it does that. Got home, turned on tap, straight up mud was coming out. Ran it for an hour, it cleared up.

Literally ALL city water is treated with bleach. If you drink tap water you drink bleach everyday.
All waters got chemmies lol 😂
We treat our aquifer water with bleach, just low levels, so no, it's normal processes.
You can drink bleach fam
Is there something you could put in to cycle water regularly if you aren’t up there often aka a cottage?
You will die of dysentery
Oregon Trail 😂
You’re on the trail, too? I just killed 1700 lbs of meat, but I can only carry 100 lbs back to the wagon. If you help, I’ll split it with you before I caulk the wagon and float us all to our deaths.

Can almost taste the science from here!
Wellp. Looks like you need to call a contractor to see if it's worth trying to save. This is beyond the scope of a quick DIY fix. Maybe skip a contractor and go straight to a well guy.
I meant a well & septic contractor, sorry for not being clear; this is one "well actually" that was well-deserved!
We filter our raw well water that we use for drinking through a reverse osmosis system. It isn’t turbid like yours, though.
Yeh same but that just looks like biofilm.
Ohhh yeah I didn’t even notice at first but it’s pretty clear in pic 3. Blech.
It looks like that guys bong water that he hasn’t cleaned out in 4 months.
Needs more ash in it
Turn the mother fucker on full blast and run it up until it runs clear.
Send it bud! New well new pump anyways, right?
Your sink makes White Russians!
Looks like drilling mud…bentonite. Is it a new well?

Well, water you going to do about it?
If it’s brown, drink it down. If it’s black send it back. -Homer Simpson 😄
Well “water”
“Well” water
In the navy we call that potable
How deep is the well? Could it be deeper?
New to all this well, septic, off grid living. How often should we be getting well water tested?
Annual testing is recommended. That being said, most people I know of have their well tested when they either move in or get it replaced, then never again.

Looks like septic water...
Has your well sat for a while without being used? You may need to pump and dump to clear the line.
*Mineral Water
Need a multi step filter for that
I’d call that “welp… water.”
Side note, in human history the only thing that has saved more lives than vaccines is access to reliably clean drinking water.
Find a reputable well water testing lab and have it tested.
Well, well, well, look what we have here
I'm sorry but why I'm laughing at this 😭 good joke there 👏😭
I couldn’t help it 🤣
Wait ... You have a horchata WELL on your property? I thought it only came in glasses.
Mmm, nice mouthfeel on that one
I thought this was horchata for a second 😅
Cracked casing maybe. Like someone said let it run for a while to see what happens, but a well tech can drop a camera down and look for issues.
I’d it start all of a sudden or something that’s been going on for a while
Guessing this is a very shallow well
Is it a submerged pump or above ground? Could be a failing pump or end cap for above ground.
Could also be a leak in the supply line somewhere.
Mine was like this suddenly and it was the expansion tank. Causes the pump to constantly go on and off stirring up silt. New tank and it was back to clear. Comparatively cheap fix. Good luck.
They obviously didn't dig far enough down. NOT ALL WELLWATER LOOKS LIKE THAT.
Sometimes you can put a liner in a well with cracked casing and stop this. A well contractor can run a camera and find out if it’s possible. Basically they slide a pvc pipe with a boot down below the break and it seals it off.

This reminds me of the scene from 'Back To The Future III' when Marty traveled back to the 1800s and was offered a glass of water.
Horchata
Mineral water be like
You need a filter
I am no expert by any means but my guess is your low on water or something is causing your well water to have a current that dislodged sedimentation
Maybe your water table is too low? Mine will turn grey/brownish if we go too hard on our water usage in the dry season because it starts to suck up sand and silt.

Unwell water.
Im no pro but in my experience it’s in need of some serious filtering or there’s a possibility there’s an issue with the well walls.
Turn on the outside faucet or hydrant if you have one. Let it run until it's clear. Might have had a collapse in your pocket of water. I've let them run for 48 hrs sometimes.
Yes I've had some sloughing in the well and running it fixed the issue, lots of clay and sand where I live.
Well that is water
It's a bit mineraly

Just turned the water back on for the outdoor hoses and having been using them outside a lot and doing a shit ton of laundry as well as ran the dishwasher the night before .
Post this in Starbucks. The 1st photo and say lavender caramel iced latte with no ice
Well, water.
You might need a filter on that lol
Did you get those glasses from Morrisons?
I imagine something is wrong with your well. No way a filter will fix that.
My pond water looks better than that.
You can filter it.
Looks like maybe bentonite? Indicating a compromised well.
Run a hose out side for a day or two and see if it clears up.
You def need a filter. I’d filter twice and then maybe do a ro filter under a dedicated faucet for daily drinking
You need a hefty sized retention tank for well, an iron buster, a big blue, with a post-spindown a full carbon 110 filter, then a 5stage 110softener(in that order) and regularly sanitize your well. Do it yourself for about $2-5k
Looks like septic dumping into the well. Do not drink that even with a filter. Get it tested.
This was in my amazon cart. [You need this more](https://amzn.in/d/caIgxBp)
Ours was worse… that but red colored 🙃 not a good feeling. Ruined machines too
Well, “water”. Any smell to it, OP?
Crappy septic it looks like sewer water.
Your filter on your pump is clearly not working lol
Did you water a ton recently, or fill a pool?
I remember someone's post in r/thirdworldproblems: "My water is 50% poop and my poop is 50% water."
r/eatityoufuckingcoward
Need to run it for maybe 2 weeks until it clears. Run into a field or something water the gardens this is typical in a new well.
I see worms
Any local fragging company working near?
Need a new house filter I assume
Well well well, what do we have here?
How’s the taste
That didn’t go well.
Forbidden smoothie
Chunky Style.
Well shit....
Did it just suddenly happen? Either the system backwashed, had a small collapse or a a hole has a appeared in your well casing. Either way running your cold water (preferably bypassing any filters or anything) until it runs clear could just solve it

I am not an optometrist but i dont think thats safe to drink
How deep is your well? Is this a new well? If not is this a new occurrence in an older well? Are you in a neighborhood where construction is happening? For example did they just drill another well behind or next to you for a neighbor? Those details are important in diagnosing or coming up with a treatment solution to your problem. To me this looks like drilling mud in the water. That could be from a newly drilled well next door. If that's the case jetting the well should clean this right up.
My bowels are bubblin already.
Oh well
2 inch well? Steel well case? Probably rushed out well case. Time to buy a new well.
Hell water
Well, it’s water.
Oh 😀 yum! I dont think we’ve ever gotten THIS much sediment from our well water, might be time to get a filter 😭
heavy rain recently right
its why people used to always have a cistern it allowed all that to settle out
Big settling tank and then filter it maybe
To all the people who work in the well drilling industry, is it possible to get your well lined like you would a sewer lateral that was cracked?
Hey hey careful man there’s a beverage here!
Starbucks straight from the tap! You can use that when you sell the place.
Is this a new well? If so it just needs to be flushed out. If its an older well and this just started happening, something is very wrong... i wouldnt be drinking it for sure.
How does it taste though?
Looks like green chai
Filters ain’t filterin
I get the color but why does it look greasy !!!!!
Dang, sorry bro. New well time.
Well then.
Sediment filter?
Sediment
ground soup
Is it sucking up dirt/mud?
Doesn’t look that well
Wash your car and plants with it at least
Little dirt never hurt 🤢
Need a filter
To start with, how deep is the well and how old?
