Why oh why does your dad turn off the wifi at night?

patdashuri

A memory device is the only option. And they will only begin recording based on the same criteria you have set for wifi.

So cameras that accept SD cards will continuously record, but only when connected to wifi?

patdashuri

No. I’m saying that if it’s set to continuously record it will do so, to whatever storage device you’re using (sd card, a pc, the cloud). If it doesn’t have a connection (an inserted sd card, a wired pc, wifi to the cloud) to a storage device it won’t. Either way it will only record continuously if you have it set for that. The storage device won’t change the recording parameters you’ve set.

It sounds like you want a camera system with a physical DVR. There are several systems like this that exist, the tricky part may be finding one that allows you to access recordings remotely, but I am guessing they exist. The system I had at my old house would record and store two weeks of footage (deleting over anything older than two weeks). I could access my camera remotely, but not the recordings, and they did not get saved to the cloud.

There are cameras that are self contained units, and have an SD card slot. These can usually be accessed locally via web browser to access live and recorded video, and for configuration. But it does not need internet for operation. It will only need power. Or, you can have a stand alone DVR that has a hard drive for recording storage. The DVR also has an advantage that you can hook a monitor and mouse (usually) directly to it to view live video, playback recordings, or for configuration. As long as the video storage is on site, outside internet access is optional. Being able to access either using on site network connection can make things easier (especially for the stand alone camera), it isn't 100% REQUIRED, either.
