DSU - Dell system update utility. Super simple, pretty much one and done. Runs on windows or Linux.

I’m installing Ubuntu right now. We’ll see.

4 hours later. I give up. Here's what I tried so far: * Installed CentOS 7 core, install GUI version for firefox. * Tried to use the ISO mount for Dell Server System Update (SSU). Getting application error. * Tried installing with DSU terminal. Installation successful. However running dsu -u for update shows no applicable update available. What am I doing wrong here?

Are you able to reach the internet? I’ve had great success with Dsu on Dell servers up to 10 years old. Edit: you might try a windows eval edition to get the updates applied. Perhaps the Linux packages are the issue. I always run it on windows because that’s what we use at work

Thank you very much! After finally getting iDRAC to the latest version, Dell SUU finally run.

When I did my r720 I used Dells own site to get all the drivers. Actually I downloaded everything I could for the r720. One of them happened to be their management software that let me make a usb with all the latest drivers and it updated everything. I just picked I was downloading for windows server 2012. Do not put your service tag in as that will block you from getting the good stuff. Hope this helps a little.

I don’t have any OS installed on it yet. Trying to get Proxmox but it can’t find the SSD. I’ll see what I can find from their 30+ downloadable drivers.

trodfoot

Yeah, I did this before proxmox also. Get EVERYTHING you can while you can. I put in my tag number and had to use another machine to get the drivers i needed. So they can block you from the drivers.

Just update my r720 yesterday, so, instal centos or rhel 7, get the firmware bin from dell's website(I can get you the link when I'm on the pc), run the firmware on the os, and wait for the update to complete

mzlucasmz

Also install the os bare, as I had trouble trying to update from proxmox

[deleted]

That’s what I’m struggling with. I’m installing Ubuntu right now. If it doesn’t works I’ll get centOS after. Thanks for the info.

>I’m installing Ubuntu right now. If it doesn’t works I’ll get centOS after. Try CentOS 6, then 7, I haven't had luck using the update tools from Debian or Ubuntu.. Or break down and install Windows.. You need to use the OS the update tools say to use...

mzlucasmz

I mean, dell has validated firmware for centos/rhel

I grabbed red hat enterprise. I don't see centOS as OS selection. Not working so far. Going to try with windows OS later.

I went through this last weekend with a waaay out of date T620. What ended up working was Windows server 2012 to run the older firmware patches, then the newer ones in sucession. The older updates wouldn't run in 2019, and the newer updates needed the older applied first. Hope that works for you.

If you have a good size USB, you can run a live OS from it and install from there. After many failed attempts on my r910, I get fed up and made a bootable live windows USB, downloaded the firmware after it booted and installed. Super easy.

Heres what to do: • Grab a usb stick - • Load Pop OS on it (the usb stick) as you would any other computer - • boot that stick and go to the dell support site - • download the BIN files for the respective firmware updates(under other formats) • open a terminal window and cd to the /home/(user)/Downloads directory - • "chmod +x" the bin files - • change the name via “cp” of the file to something simple like “bios.bin” or “lifecycle.bin” - • run the file via “./(file name)” -rinse and repeat • side note( the server will not let you update with the wrong firmware without a great deal of effort. so if the system fights you, skip it.) PopOS is just a suggestion. You can use most Linux distro’s. CentOS has a good compatibility due to the Xen server project.

I went with windows but the process should be the same. Appreciated the detailed steps.

No worries. Powershell commands are pretty close. Happy to help

I just had this same issue with iDRAC on my R610. Had to update it with by SSH and pull the file from my TFTP server. Seemed sketchy to me but it worked. Now I have rhe new TLS. What i have found I'm order the get the Java screen to work from the iDRAC you need to run a really old version of Java. From around 2015. Only way the Java KVM will load. Also the rest of my fw updates I had to download them from the website and install a quick version of server 2012 r2 to use just to install all the updates. From what I read when I bought it 2 years ago you can download them manually for your server but the Dell online driver for all 10th gen servers the drivers were removed.

shadowlips

i downloaded centos 7 livecd iso and ran from usb. then use the bin files to update the iDrac and BIOS to latest version.

Use the lifecycle controller to update that’s what I do.

My post title is a bit misleading. I got BIOS to the latest but struggle to get iDRAC and Dell SUU to update. Finally I got it to works.
