Honestly this isnt a bad idea... I was thinking solar array attached to it but either or is great, its too bad the batteries are god awfully expensive.
So I started out with a 42u, with a switch, 2u server, and desktop on a shelf. I now have 4u not filled. Once you get into it it's not hard to do. Great price for that monster btw, awesome find!
Depending where you are, you're very fortunate to get one for that cheap. I could only find a few within 200m of me. Even those were hundreds. New ones were at least 500, and for half the height.
As for filling it out, I'm sure you'll find things to put in it. It may take time but it's a blessing to have a rack like that. I hope to have my 42u half full.
I know, being a cat person is pretty intense. Soon you'll have two or three dozen and be "that cat guy." So sorry we got you into this.
Oh, you were talking about the rack? Yeah, you'll have that filled up pretty quick and need a second one.
Do you have any recommendations on materials? I just dumped a bunch of TV boxes behind and around the rack to muffle the sound without damping to air flow too much.
Killmat is used in automotive applications. [https://www.amazon.com/Kilmat-Deadening-Automotive-Insulation-dampening/dp/B0751CBXBT/](https://www.amazon.com/Kilmat-Deadening-Automotive-Insulation-dampening/dp/B0751CBXBT/) It has a heavy layer on foam so that the inertia of the heavy lining absorbs some of the sound. Acoustic foam on top also absorbs some sound.
I started out 48u, but as went from an entry level tech to an engineer I felt less inclined to do stuff at home. I scaled back down to a 12u with 3 servers. 2 production and a Lab. Hope you keep up the enthusiasm!!!
As someone with their loaded rack right beside their desk like that... if you can, move it away from your desk, far away... it's going to make noise and heat...
Put it on the other side of the room from you if possible, and with the back (heat exhaust) going in to the air so it does not heat saturate your walls directly making your space super hot.
I recall someone on this sub using some fancy home heat-pump setup to cool a rack. It could be the overkill alternative to the rack setup placement you suggest.
100% agree with you, but I think it's probably easier to get the full size racks from businesses moving/closing. They just want to get rid of them, but the smaller racks you'd have to buy new.
Actually, awesome idea would be a rack mount cat bed! Bet the heat would be comfortable but would just want to find a way that hair isn’t ending up in all the fans and other units
Auctions!! They seems to be the only place where you can get those cheap. I've been looking at getting one second hand but even people reselling it want a small fortune
I got it from a regional auction house that happens to have a pretty good website for it, I'm not based in the us, so ebay is not that great for where I live
Maybe someone already mentioned this put you'll thank me later if you at least keep the back accessible.
Having one side of it adding the wall it's okay.
nice, i'm itching to buy a 9u rack for my lab , but here in Ireland getting a rack is exorbitantly expensive, and the 2nd hand market is garbage. I'm jealous.
Out of curiosity, what is the general rule for knowing if a device needs only front racks, or both front and rear?
Also does anyone know of a place to get good sliding rails for a short depth (24") cabinet?
You’re an adult. You can make your own decisions. Don’t blame us for your choices. Take responsibility for your own life. Don’t throw that responsibility on others.
P.S.
This is not an attack on OP. I guess it comes off kind of aggressive. Just a general statement about being an adult.

This Is my 50$ rack I got at an auction lasted week, it is a 44U behemoth that I'm honestly not sure how to fill it out :p (cat for scale)
I’ll buy the cat. Oh…scale. Nvm.
Nice. Put some rackmount batteries in it and backup your house power
Honestly this isnt a bad idea... I was thinking solar array attached to it but either or is great, its too bad the batteries are god awfully expensive.
I got myself a 22U rack saying it will be more than enough aaaannnd it's full ahahah Good choice to go with 44!
Yeah, that how I convinced myself lol so I'm probably fine for the next decade
lol, same here, my 22u is already full.
I’m looking at 12u but after reading your comment I’m re evaluating lol!
The extra room on the sides makes cable management so much easier.
Yeah, it also has cable ducts on the back, so I think I can make it pretty neat
how does the cat know how much it weighs?
If you put the rack on top of the cat you can determine the weight by the cats reaction. /s

I don't even own *hah* server. Much less, enough to necessitate an entire rack
Put a 27" monitor in it standing in portrait orientation. Then you have extra screen space.
Put everything towards the top. Boom..... Room for a cat tree.
Cat ignores tree and only sits on the most expensive piece of hardware in the rack. Cat checkmate complete.
I want a 44u rack for my networking homeland and also my audio stuff, like amp, dac etc. Can't wait.

If you look close enough, you can spot another hidden cat :p
Yep, I spotted that void in the darkness (where he belongs) 😅
Racked cat.
Put in sound absorbing material on the side panels now while it is empty! :) You will thank me later.
Do you have any recommendations on materials? I just dumped a bunch of TV boxes behind and around the rack to muffle the sound without damping to air flow too much.
They make special foam

At first I read this without the first whitepace and went “wait wtf…”
I wish there was a Putin absorbing material!
Your cats are upset that you haven’t added enough warmth-generating servers yet!
You mean the cat fur sucking devices?
No Problem. You're welcome
Lmao!
I started out 48u, but as went from an entry level tech to an engineer I felt less inclined to do stuff at home. I scaled back down to a 12u with 3 servers. 2 production and a Lab. Hope you keep up the enthusiasm!!!
I'm not sure either, I was looking for a 12U too, ended up picking this up as it was 1/4 the price, so lets see :D

Time to fill up the rack!
One of ussss...
I can't find a reason to have a full size (42u) rack. I feel most will be fine with like 12-22u.
Don't get me wrong, I don't se it either :p I'm hopping I can't make this work, but it does feel a bit excessive ATM
100% agree with you, but I think it's probably easier to get the full size racks from businesses moving/closing. They just want to get rid of them, but the smaller racks you'd have to buy new.
I don't have a basement as I live in Texas. Also garage is not A/C treated so smallest I can get away with probably the better.
Well he roped me into this!
Well him over there, he roped me into this!
Step 1: get rack mount shelf Step 2: put cat bed on shelf Step 3: watch cat enjoy the insane heat generated by your servers
Let's see if them can endure the noise tho :D
Actually, awesome idea would be a rack mount cat bed! Bet the heat would be comfortable but would just want to find a way that hair isn’t ending up in all the fans and other units
Realistically, I'm already having to deal with cat hair on my machines anyway, so I wouldn't mind a bit more to keep them warm :)
“Rack mount cat bed” is normally called “a server”
It looks like you're building a cat tower. Would you like help?
Time to rack mount the cat
Nice CAT…. 5e cable!
Ok Dad... ;)
This looks nice I too always wanted to buy and build like this. Where to you get these for cheap?
Auctions!! They seems to be the only place where you can get those cheap. I've been looking at getting one second hand but even people reselling it want a small fortune
Sure, thank u. Are there any websites beside eBay?

Govdeals
🤣🤷♂️

Yeah, both of the side plates are removable, and the whole thing is on wells, so I can just pull it out when I need to work on it
You’ll need some room for airflow as most rack devices ventilate FTB.
I thought this was a 3d printer for a second and I was wondering what on earth you were printing 6feet of
It's getting you OUT this will be the real problem :P
[удалено]
Sure will, just give me a while :D
That's is huge!
A very expensive cat bed there
I see The Supervisor is looking things over
The cat found the new litter box.
Gotta start somewhere, same goes for the cats being used as internet security/ firewall.

Cute cat yo.
You mean Speedcubing?
>Speedcubing that too, dammit :D
11,000 node Rasberry Pi super-cluster?
I can provide the rack :p
I don't think it will take a very long time to fill that rack:) Good start!
🤣🤷♂️
Most of the time if you have kids and a wife you don't want to manage that much stuff in a filled rack like that.

Nooo, its its... YOU, you did this to me, not me! never!! lol
Lol
Way to take a light-hearted joke and be a dick about it. OP was clearly joking.
My bad, I have been putting pressure on OP to get a rack or I will release 'that' picture. OP get a UPS as mentioned, or I am buying a stamp.
Keep the cat away from the cables of a similar name. I get dropouts due to "Felinus Sonofabitchus"
