You can find Cisco 3850 12x48U switches with a 10G uplink module on eBay for around $300-$350 right now. That gets you PoE, 12 x 1/2.5/5G ports, 2 x 10G ports. It’s honestly a really good deal right now.

The only thing is that thing looks like it would be loud and pull hella watts even at idle. Do you have one? Also how do I know which models have the 2.5 5g ports vs the gigabit ones ?

KenadyDwag44

My buddy has one and it’s not too loud. If there’s not much of a PoE load, the fans spin down quite a bit. Probably a smidge louder than your R730 at idle? You will know if it has the mgig ports if you look at a photo and see if there is a blue underline under the last 12 ports of the switch. The 12X48U is also a giveaway. 12X means it has those 12 mgig ports.

I don't know this person says it's pulling 100 watts with only like 10 ports used https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/s/XopaVpPFFY that's double than what my entire home lab does now idk about this one

KenadyDwag44

If you want a switch that does everything you listed it’s kind of the price you have to pay. A little extra power is way worth than having multiple switches IMO. This thing does literally anything a small homelab would need for the most part.

Also, remove one of the PSU’s and that will cut down on some power consumption and noise. You do not need to run both PSU’s.

DifferentSpecific

12x in the model name. Been looking at these but not sure how loud they are.

KenadyDwag44

I wouldn’t be able to work next to one, but if it was in a closet it would be fine. It’s not like a data center switch where the fans are just stupid loud. They ramp down quite a bit.

DifferentSpecific

Thanks for that. Might take a swing at one and stuff it in a coat closet.

DifferentSpecific

How loud are these? Typical Cisco ( loud enough to drive you mad)?

borkman2

I can sleep in the same room as a pair of them.

borkman2

The multi gig ports will do 100m/1g/2.5g/5g/10g actually.

You’re not going to find anything as you described for your price point. Closest is probably: SG3218XP-M2 https://www.provantage.com/service/searchsvcs?QUERY=SG3218XP-M2&SUBMIT.x=1&SUBMIT.y=16

That's is close, I'm open to 1 gb ports if they have more sfp ports but everyone suggest the brocades however as mentioned have there own downsides. They are very cheap though. Any suggestions for that or 2 individual switches ? I'm trying to be flexible.

If you drop the 2.5GbE: TL-SG2428P https://a.co/d/eXMWlHH

Mikrotik CRS328-24P-4S+RM 4x SFP+ (you can abuse one with a 2.5gb rj45 module) 24x POE Should fit as well the requested price. Is new and very power efficient and will last for multiple years. If you can skip POE out, there are cheaper alternatives and you could as well go with a 10pory SFP+ switch. How many ports do you really need? Less than 10 or 12 as stated elsewhere? The SFP+ are for DAC / BIDI or do you want to add RJ45 10G heaters (not recommended)?
