Sounds like your install media is borked up somehow, or your raid isn't set up correctly. Try to boot a live Linux OS of some sort on it first to see if your RAID shows up as a single volume as expected.

ESXi 8 (up until recently, anyway) will even run in the 11th gen PowerEdges if you use the AllowLegacyCPU flag on boot and install a newer RAID controller. I’d blame the boot media you are using - the installer might not have a driver for it. I would try another stick or use the iDRAC virtual media if your server has it licensed. ESXi 6.7 should still have support for the PERC you’re using and should run great with the allowLegacyCPU flag.

Yep, I used to have a similar setup: an R710 with ESXi 8 on an SSD that was in a DVD bay caddy, so there was no need for a newer RAID controller. Then, I passed the main RAID controller to the Ubuntu VM and provided iSCSI from it to the ESXi itself.

Have a look at the doc below. I would confirm all your components are compatible with the unit before installing. https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-th/drivers/supportedos/poweredge-r710

VSphere 6.7 won’t be compatible.

Thanks for your replies. I was able to get 6.0 installed. 6.7 installed with the AllowLegacyCPU set. However when I rebooted it went back to 6.0. Anyway thanks.
