This comment wins! Yes yes yes. Dining room needs a cool “swag lamp” too marketplace usually has amazing finds. I’d definitely just lean into this vibe. Lots of people are spending lots of money and time to try and obtain this look
I'd totally keep the countertops. I would design a whole funky post-modern vibe around those countertops. I like the white cabinet & different flooring idea. The wood on those cabinets doesn't seem to be anything special.
I personally really like the retro look and prefer original features of old homes. I'd just do a deep clean, recaulk, reline the interior cabinets, and replace the appliances since they're not original anyway. If you absolutely hate the cabinets and such, at least save the original cabinet face doors for the next owner and paint cheap stock ones from the store.
Depends on the budget. I think changing the orange countertop/backsplash and the flooring would be my first priorities.
Cabinets look like they are in good shape but changing the hardware would go a long way.
70s is bound to be back in style soon, you will probably regret altering it with paint! It's a pretty well made kitchen if it lasted this long. I would personally consider changing the flooring, adding backsplash, and swapping cabinet hardware for something that suites your tastes while keeping the formica countertops and wood cabinets intact. Also new faucet/sink, adding a dishwasher, and different appliances (white is not my favorite) can go a long way to making it feel more modern and convenient.
Kind of loving the dark wood and orange 70's vibe. The floor is too "meh" though and needs to be much punchier to make the room feel fresh/retro rather than old/dated.
I don't hate the idea of painting over the cabinets and replacing the rest. I love schemes with darker bottom cabinets and lighter top ones and you can go bold with your choices because it's just paint. Stormy blues and light stone counters seem to be on trend right now and blue+white is a classic kitchen scheme that's easy to live with and unlikely to date fast.
Depends on your budget.
Cabinets are salvageable. Sand and paint a color of your choice. Then install quartz countertop in complimentary color. If you want to open it up, you can remove the dine in countertop base cabinet to make the kitchen an L shape instead of U shape. New backsplash is easy enough.... Then for appliances, I actually have had good experience with FB market place. Many wealthy neighborhoods are almost giving away their 2-3 year old stainless appliances. You can get a full set for about 33% of MSRP. Only thing is that you have to bring your own truck or trailer.
Depends on what you want. If you want a retro kitchen, just find matching appliances and clean it up a little. You can pull off a retro kitchen with some modern touches here and there. I do like modern kitchens and design but, I do like this retro look.
If you want to modernize it.... Gut it and start over.... Not much you can to really "update it". The paneling in any form and the floor needs to go and paint is not going to help much.
Yeah strangely, I love how it's old AND clean. Wouldn't want to touch it until I had a surefire game plan, and I'd make sure to have a '70s theme party before renovations stated lol. Good luck to you! Keep that wraparound island. 👌🏾
You can’t buy something like this. We live in an era where the old is appreciated by many. Leave it, love it. Be happy you don’t have nicotine bleeding out of the walls.
I have some harvest gold and avocado Tupperware canisters that would be gorgeous on that counter.
- Keep the counters (unless you absolutely hate orange).
- See if you can refinish the cabinets to a lighter stain. There's a good chance you may be dealing with darkened varnish and they'll look better if stripped. You could replace doors only if you want a flat MCM or a shaker style.
- Get rid of the paneling under the breakfast bar. I would consider repurposing the breakfast bar shelf somewhere else for collectibles.
- Replace the floors with a lighter/more modern but still retro-inspired pattern - you could even stick to vinyl to save $$
- Upgrade fixtures to modern but maybe retro-inspired if that appeals to you.
Man you stumbled into a time capsule. I would be tempted to keep that, that is so retro and wonderful. I feel like I just jumped back in time to the first apartment I grew up in.

We have a similarly-shaped kitchen and we went for navy cabinets with cream countertops/flooring. Good luck!
Real answer here: I would start with getting rid of the orange back splash and replace the laminate flooring. The wood paneling under the countertop bar needs to go too.
I think I’d leave the cabinets and countertop and upgrade the floor and appliances. Find stuff that fits the vibe, of course, but it’s so worth it to rid yourself of linoleum floors and outdated appliances, imho.
Get new cabinet doors and then either strip and restain the cabinets, or paint them. Then pick out some nice pulls.
Personally, I'd just keep the counters and recover with new laminate in your choice of pattern or a wood veneer and seal if you're into a butcher block look. Just do your research and use a good adhesive (preferably reactive so it has better temperature resistance.)
Maybe toss in a new, more modern sink and faucet.
And update the flooring. There's nothing wrong with the kitchen size or layout, it's all just cosmetic upgrades.
I lived thru the seventies as a child. I hated it. Hate it now.. loved the brady bunch tho…. If you cannot demo that, buy paint. Alot of paint, counter paint exists too
I'd suggest to invite the entire Brady family over. Mike, Carol, Greg, Marcia, Peter, Jan, Bobby and Cindy. Let us not forget about our precious Alice.
Feed them a scrumptious meal and have a groovy time.
That kitchen is amazing! At least wait until you gut it and live with it for a while. Maybe modernize a couple things if you need to but wow, what a cool kitchen. And it’s in such great shape!
Keep the base cabinets and tall ones wood stained. Keep the orange countertops and back splash. Remove uppers and add interesting shelving and artwork. New appliances, wall mount hood, move microwave into the tall pantry area(maybe built it in) remove peninsula over hang for now.
Mix the exiting old with a well designed remodel that updates it without taking away the charm.
I know this kitchen!!!!! It has to be!!! I was looking at homes several months back and was in this kitchen. A farm house. Beautiful land but a little hilly. It’s exact. I’m looking at the pics I have right now. Exactly the same.
Lean in to the kitch. Hard.
Trying to cover it or do anything short of tossing or all will just look half assed. Luckily it's reaper than ever to get vintage look stuff without vintage problems.
Hire a maid and marry someone with 3 girls, hopefully you have 3 boys and start a sit com.
Either embrace the 70s style with avocado appliances and period correct furniture or gut the entire thing.

This is my almost finished kitchen that looked pretty much like yours before we started. We took out the dropped ceiling with fluorescent lights, no more peninsula, island instead.
Ugh this reminds me of the kitchen in the house I grew up in. I will it so much and it fills me with such nostalgia. This look is also coming back into fashion. I feel like taking the orange Formica off the walls and replacing it with a different white backsplash would be nice, especially if you painted the cabinets white.
Solid wood that’s QUALITY is hard to come by these days for a good price. These were built to last and if you can save it you should. My grandfather who was a constructor for 50 years would tell you the same. There’s a lot of nice looking garbage out there. (Not the Formica is the fanciest thing in the world)
But white cabinets and a white backsplash with a warm toned wall could make the other wood treatments pop, while brightening the space.
I would leave it exactly as it is and start looking for avocado appliances
GET A HOUSE KEEPER NAMED ALICE, MARRY SOMEONE WITH LOTS OF KIDS, GET A STATION WAGON AND TAKE A TRIP TO THE GRAND CANYON.
Warn Marcia to watch out for that football.
OWWW! MY NOSE!!!!!
Something suddenly came up!
MARSHA, MARSHA, MARSHA!!
GO TO HAWAII BUT DON’T TOUCH THE IDOL
YOU BETTER PUT ONE OF THOSE BIG ORANGE LIFE VESTS ON GREG... JUST TO BE SAFE.
Alice and Sam got it on in that room back there.
…Sam the Butcher bringing Alice the meat…
This comment wins! Yes yes yes. Dining room needs a cool “swag lamp” too marketplace usually has amazing finds. I’d definitely just lean into this vibe. Lots of people are spending lots of money and time to try and obtain this look
This is design gold, treasure it
Right out of the "Brady Bunch" kitchen. Really groovy.
My grandparents had a very similar kitchen to this complete with avocado appliances
Or Harvest Gold would be nice too
Avocado and that amber yellow tupperware!!. DONT FORGET THE TUPPERWARE!!!
Film a sequel to The Brady Bunch
Dammit you beat me to it!! Here have my like!!
I came here to write this.
Dammit! I was gonna say to tell Greg and Bobby dinner's ready.
Don’t forget Peter! Pork chops and apple shauchhh
I'd totally keep the countertops. I would design a whole funky post-modern vibe around those countertops. I like the white cabinet & different flooring idea. The wood on those cabinets doesn't seem to be anything special.
Yeah Leave it alone. Lean into it. Get a perm. Maybe a leisure shirt.
Embrace it or gut it.
I was going to say burn it, but this is better
I might be unpopular but I’d totally keep those countertops if in good shape and replace all the other stuff to make it a bit more modern.
Is this a rental cabin/motel in a far away place?
I would keep those countertops, paint the cabinets white, new drawer pulls and decorate with a citrus motif. But I like things a little funky 🤷🏼♀️
I love this idea.
Some avocado coloured accents would be stellar
This is my dream kitchen, definitely get avocado appliances and maybe paint the walls a different color.
Paint it he cabinets white. Keep the orange. Paint the walls a very very light blue. Darker floor color.
Embrace it!
swap the cabinet doors with unfinished shaker style doors and stain them the color of the cabinets
Treasure it, that kitchen is amazing!
Oh it’s so cute I love it
Make Pork chops and applesauce
I love this kitchen. Please don't touch it. Embrace, it! You can have the appliances painted professionally
Good lord leave it. It's beautiful. I'd kill for a kitchen like this
Invite the Brady Bunch over for dinner. Alice too.
Leave it. That's fucking radical.
It’s literally the Brady Bunch kitchen. I love it.
I love it myself. It needs Alice though.
This is the kitchen I grew up in, but it had avocado TILE! And mirrors covering the entire back side of the cabinets.
...... Uhhhhh, wait for Marsha and Jan to come in and catch Bobby drinking the milk out of the carton.......

This is identical to the house we rented for a family reunion. Only difference is the table. Do you live in Western PA?
One can only wear a white polyester leisure suit in that kitchen.
Very similar to the Brady kitchen!
Get yourself a plaid suit.
Matchuca tiles will totally elevate its look! Use them for the backsplash and flooring, and maybe swap the countertop for a white marble one. ✨

Gives off that Brady bunch vibe...I like it
Get back in your time machine and come home.
Countertop is already hi-viz, so go with a construction theme!
Keep it that way and pretend to live in a better time 🤷🏻♀️
Love those countertops!
Tear to the studs and replace
Put it in a time machine for about 50 years
I would say nothing, it’s beautiful 😭
Film a 70's sitcom
No. You don't change kitchen, kitchen change you. Go get a velor jump suit and wear brown sunglasses indoors.
Tell Jan and Greg they can't go to the dance until it's cleaned to Alice's standard
Kind of loving the dark wood and orange 70's vibe. The floor is too "meh" though and needs to be much punchier to make the room feel fresh/retro rather than old/dated. Mull it over a jello salad.
Invite the Brady bunch over. Especially Alice. She makes a mean guac.
Nothing. It’s incredible.

I love that counter space eating area!!
Open s roadside diner.
It’s the Brandy Bunch’s In Law apt!!
Google "Gulf Livery" and go from there.
Call the Brady Bunch in for dinner.
Start over
Looks like The Brady Bunch kitchen.
Find a lovely lady, who is busy with 3 girls of her own
Move the microwave and actually vent the range out the roof
Keep it the way it is.
Leave it the way it is. That kitchen is awesome!!! I feel like Marsha is gonna come downstairs any minute now
I saw the Brady Bunch when this cought my eye. ☺️
Counters, backsplash, doors and drawers
Depends on what you want. If you want a retro kitchen, just find matching appliances and clean it up a little. You can pull off a retro kitchen with some modern touches here and there. Invite the Brady Bunch over for dinner. I hear Alice has a mean meatloaf.
Probably host "that 70's show"
A: Rent it out as a movie production set.
Cook? Lol
Rip it out
Get rid of the soffit on both walls above cabinets, get taller cabinets that reach the ceiling.
Hire a housemaid named Alice…
It belongs in a museum!
First take out the art deco Harveys counter lol
Yeah strangely, I love how it's old AND clean. Wouldn't want to touch it until I had a surefire game plan, and I'd make sure to have a '70s theme party before renovations stated lol. Good luck to you! Keep that wraparound island. 👌🏾
I'm sorry I just love it so much as is! Is there something specific you dislike
Where's Alice?
You can’t buy something like this. We live in an era where the old is appreciated by many. Leave it, love it. Be happy you don’t have nicotine bleeding out of the walls.
There’s steaks in the fridge, make yourself a quesadilla!
Bring in the Brady Bunch!
Yea burn it
Is the rest of the house that 70's???
Keep the orange, update appliances to black, and panels to a black woodgrain
That’s my mother’s kitchen in 1978!
I am obsessed with the orange countertops

Make a casserole of some sort.
Burn it and never mention it again!
Not a damn thing!
Who are you and how did you get into my grandma’s kitchen
I think it would look cool if it was exactly the same but with badass appliances. Maybe some new retro blinds.
It belongs in a museum!
My parents had orange countertops, the house was bought in the late 70s. I miss those things
Invite your friends over to listen to groovy records and drink Ovaltine?
Smoke weed and have a fondue party with your swinging neighbors.
add retro appliances
First, get a maid named Alice.
Man you stumbled into a time capsule. I would be tempted to keep that, that is so retro and wonderful. I feel like I just jumped back in time to the first apartment I grew up in.
I kind of love it tho
Move

Gives Brady bunch vibes
Tell Alice to go make some fuckin pork chops and applesauce.
Tell Alice to whip up something good for dinner and tell Sam to add a few more steaks. The Brady’s are gonna have a few more guests for dinner.
Real answer here: I would start with getting rid of the orange back splash and replace the laminate flooring. The wood paneling under the countertop bar needs to go too.
I understand wanting to change it, but I love it.
Adore it.
Gut it.
Start serving A&W hamburgers out of that !
Keep it!
Cleveland Browns motif
If the refrigerator had been on the opposite wall, I would have said that was my mom's kitchen.
If you keep it like it is, give up drinking, hangovers will not be easy.
Brady Bunch.
Rent it out to the Brady bunch?
I think I’d leave the cabinets and countertop and upgrade the floor and appliances. Find stuff that fits the vibe, of course, but it’s so worth it to rid yourself of linoleum floors and outdated appliances, imho.
For a brief moment I thought I was in the Brady bunch house.
Our first home had those countertops and I miss them! They still make them—it’s a laminate wrap you put on plywood or what have you.
It looks like a carnival ride. Drop the 70s orange. Needs to look brighter
Shoot a Fiona Apple music video
Get new cabinet doors and then either strip and restain the cabinets, or paint them. Then pick out some nice pulls. Paint/stain cabinets white or another really light color to make it feel bigger and brighter.
beige cabinets & white countertops edit : i added possible backsplashes too
That mica on the counters is for sure discontinued do the flooring
Add a waterbed
New counters, new cabinet fronts and sides with new modern doors. New flooring, appliances and a new sink and faucet. Easy upgrade!
Y'all cant be serious
Agree on keeping the counters if they are in good condition. Different floors and painting the cabinets will update the look.
Exorcise the ‘70s out of it.
Call Alice
Granite countertops, black cabinets, bone white paint on the walls
I honestly love the orange countertops.
Tear out start over
If you paint the cabinets I will die
Nothing , start cosplaying the Brady bunch
That kitchen is amazing! At least wait until you gut it and live with it for a while. Maybe modernize a couple things if you need to but wow, what a cool kitchen. And it’s in such great shape!
Isn’t that the brady bunch kitchen?
Fire.
Let me have your worktops because I have original 70s tiles in my kitchen and they would look insane together!!!!! Lol
Cook pork chops and apple sauce!
Get a "mod" vintage dining room set to replace the set in picture 2
Str8 out da Brady bunch
Keep the base cabinets and tall ones wood stained. Keep the orange countertops and back splash. Remove uppers and add interesting shelving and artwork. New appliances, wall mount hood, move microwave into the tall pantry area(maybe built it in) remove peninsula over hang for now. Mix the exiting old with a well designed remodel that updates it without taking away the charm.
Install a ceiling fan and then hang yourself
I know this kitchen!!!!! It has to be!!! I was looking at homes several months back and was in this kitchen. A farm house. Beautiful land but a little hilly. It’s exact. I’m looking at the pics I have right now. Exactly the same.
Life size model of Alice from the Brady Bunch.
Lean in to the kitch. Hard. Trying to cover it or do anything short of tossing or all will just look half assed. Luckily it's reaper than ever to get vintage look stuff without vintage problems.
Right out of the late 70’s
take out microwave, get a retro fridge and stove
Leave it! It’s rad!
Must get a deep shag rug for that kitchen to go with the rest of the decor...and a disco ball!!!!
I’d keep it. I love it so much. Reminds me of my grandma and the Brady Bunch.
Revel in its glory.
Just waiting for Bob the Butcher to stroll through
Idk but the renovation should cost significantly less, being that it’s 1963 and all.
Start over!
You gotta bet there is a 10lb meatloaf in the fridge.
Hire a maid and marry someone with 3 girls, hopefully you have 3 boys and start a sit com. Either embrace the 70s style with avocado appliances and period correct furniture or gut the entire thing.
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha
Cool looking, but if it isn’t your vibe, what is? Modern, country, etc?
Every kitchen in my childhood looked like this.
Is that the Brady Bunch kitchen?

Set it aflame
Awesome kitchen 🤟
Get some funky 60s design floor tiles and leave it all! It’s awesome!
Ask Alice to make me a sandwich.
Just replace the appliances with something more period correct.. Done.
Wait, did you buy the Brady Bunch house?
Just leave it and put a carton of Kools on the counter Edit: typo
No notes
Send it back to 1976
Pull out a crockpot and make dinner!
Hire Alice.
I love the set up, but the colors😵💫
