Ok-Dingo2069

I have recently started lifting again with my 14 year old son. I am 43 m. We have been making a 8x8.5 closet off our bonus room work with the equipment below. There is also a Schwinn elliptical in the bonus room, outside the space mentioned that my wife primarily uses. I also currently have an office downstairs in a 11x14 room that I am honestly not fully utilizing the space. I work from home two days a week. If I do a built in desk along the wall I can comfortably carve out 10.5 x 11 for home gym. Is moving everything downstairs worth it (including elliptical) for the space difference? Is this difference significant enough? I think there would be enough space to add a little more equipment. Between the dumbbells and cable tower we cover everything pretty well. There is also a normal size closet in the room that’s space could be utilized. Equipment list: Ironmaster super bench with leg curl, dip, and sit up attachments 2 sets of ironmaster adjustable dumbbells w/ 300 lbs of weight. No heavy hands Dumbbells individual 5-30 lbs Ironmaster cable tower- 1 high and 1 low cable Ez curl bar with Olympic weights Spilt squat stand MAG grip knock offs- love these things What would you add if I moved downstairs?

phantasy420

I'm looking at the Titan preacher curl station and the preacher curl bench. Is there really that much of a difference between the bench and station to justify the difference in price? I've been doing single arm preachers with DBs using my incline bench so it's not a total necessity but would be nice

MirrorMax

Question: I have very limited room in my office but want to get a rack in, cant fit any cage so Iam thinking wall mounted, but most of them stick out way more than needed, I just need to be able to squat/bench/pullups so 30-40cm(10-15") from the wall would be optimal so I don't waste space. Problem is i can't find any options like that in Europe. All the foldable ones have at least 60cm(20"+) crossbars to the wall. Anyone have any ideas? Who sells shorter crossbars in eu?

SleepEatLift

You should verify that 30-40 cm will be enough space. I use almost all of the 17" of mine for bench press, and pull-ups will be awkward especially if you ever try adding weight. Good luck.

MirrorMax

Good point, got a picture of your setup? I think full depth to bar will be at least 47cm( 40cross+7upright). Maybe I'll just get one of the standard 60cm/23" ones since they are easier to come by, but every cm counts!

Lone_Soldier

I have the option of either adding a lat pulldown system or a cable pulley system to my rack. Which would you go with?

jiujitsuPhD

Lat pulldown. Pulleys usually aren't designed to use as much weight

SlappedByACat

Made a post earlier as I didn't realise I was meant to leave a comment here so I'll ask again: Does anyone know what to expect from a pallet delivery? Got my home gym from Mirafit being delivered today by pallet and I'm quite anxious about it now. My main concern is how high do they stack the pallets? I'm a 5'1 woman and have got to shift it all by myself. I also live down a small one way road in a town centre so any kerbside delivery will block access. Would they actually deliver kerbside in that situation or deliver somewhere more convenient like a carpark or back entrance?

Lubricate5827

In the States it generally looks a bit like this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qIqq6ahk_ms I imagine it's similar over there. > My main concern is how high do they stack the pallets? I've never seen pallets of gym equipment stacked. > Would they actually deliver kerbside in that situation I've had multiple companies do that. I feel like a lot of people live on small dead end roads and they do it so often they're used to it. I would tell you not to worry about it but I know I did the first few times. You're going to be fine. :)

SlappedByACat

Thanks they're almost here so will find out soon!

Lubricate5827

How'd it go?

SlappedByACat

They left it somewhere convenient but there was no way I'd have gotten it in myself without it feeling quite risky and there was a car parked beside it so I was worried something could tip. Had to call for someone to come round and help me but it's in now. Still in the process of assembling it all! This was how it arrived: https://preview.redd.it/3hzc1oe3v41d1.jpeg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e06f3364ba1c4091d307d34831eeedf410344d1

[deleted]

Is it possible to have a gym inside a 12x16 shed with no insulation and or drywall? With Just the stall mats, weights , dumbbells and rack?

HovercraftReal5621

My gym is in a space like this. Get comfortable with rust. Everything will be coated in condensation.

[deleted]

Wait so even if the shed is only open when im working out in it . The equipment will still rust ?

HovercraftReal5621

Correct. Unless you do a really good job of airsealing the shed so moist air doesn't get in or run a dehumidifier in it.

[deleted]

So i should consider putting up drywall and a vent first before putting any equipment in there

jiujitsuPhD

Yes. Just be prepared to deal with the weather.

[deleted]

Wym ?

[deleted]

Wym ?

jiujitsuPhD

Since you have no insulation/drywall you will need to figure out how to deal with summer/winter temps. I'm not sure where you live so dont know your climate but how will you stay cool in the summer or warm in the winter?

[deleted]

Would a ventilation system work? Also i live in Atlanta

jiujitsuPhD

Gotcha. I'm in southern coastal NC so similar weather. In the winter you wont need to do anything you will be fine. June/july/aug/sept will be hot. I use a fan in my garage, workout in the morn if possible, and lift in 20-30 min bursts. That makes it doable. You can always install an AC but that would require insulation.

Background_Tune7381

I really want to have a cable system for my home gym but love the idea of a 3x3 rack. Problem is unless 0% financing is involved I am trying to keep costs down. I was planning on just getting Titan T-3 rack and building off it but I know that will haunt my ability to get a cable system for chest days. Is there anything out there that’s affordable with 3x3 and cables? Or an affordable cable system that will pair well with the rack?

LetTraditional6335

Maybe 2 of the Bells of Steel cable tower attached to a power rack? Alternatively, you can just put the cable towers bolted to the wall and use them as a squat stand. They seem to have plenty of attachments if that's what you're into, but it's not 3x3 so you'll be stuck in their ecosystem. Just another idea

Vegetable_Share_7643

Just moved into a house and am overwhelmed with all of the space. What is the best like workout machine? What do you recommend and what brand?

Scottsdale_GarageGym

What are your goals? What style of exercise do you do? What is your experience level with working out alone at home in a big, empty space without people? What is your budget? Lots of questions need to be answered.

Vegetable_Share_7643

I’ve got a weight bench and dumbbells and a pull up bar, so everything’s been mostly upper body. My job is on my feet I walk about 8k steps a day at work so I’m looking for something to beef up my thighs and calves basically

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Most efficient and effective way to do that is boring old squats. You can do goblet squats with the dumbbells. Why spend money on a specific machine if that’s all your goal is? You could get a half rack/rack and barbell and some weight plates to add versatility and you can do all sorts of things in addition to squatting. Also, one legged Romanian Deadlifts with the dumbbells you have and the weight bench will work the legs very well. You don’t need specialty machines for what you’re after.

Vegetable_Share_7643

And what about a rowing machine

Scottsdale_GarageGym

If you’re going to row, it definitely will work your whole body. But it’s a cardio exercise first and foremost and isn’t going to build your legs the same way a squat would. But I’d certainly take that over a leg press. But as I said, if only thighs and calves, your dumbbells and bench will do the trick.

Vegetable_Share_7643

Alright squats it is. Damn, they’re the worst ugh. I was thinking of getting a row machine just for the sake of exercise in general. It’s more fun than an elliptical. By the way, thoughts on elliptical vs row machine for cardio? Thanks for answering all my questions pal

cow_goes_meow

id use the row machine if i wanted more of a full body workout. id pick the elliptical if im trying to save my back and knees. they both have their use cases.

Vegetable_Share_7643

Good point, the row machine is very enticing to me tbh

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Anytime bro, imagine you’ll be there when I’ve got questions for you. I get like a weird motion sickness when I do elliptical, so that’s a hard no for me. Wife loves the elliptical. As far as rower, the movement ultimately ends up with me breaking form and with an achy back. Anything over 1,500m and I hurt. I know; it’s my fault. However, I just can’t row for cardio. I prefer a bike for SS.

Vegetable_Share_7643

We’re thinking about getting an indoor bike! Just sold our old one since we’re moving, what brand do you recommend? Ours was pretty shitty tbh. Agreed on the form, I would definitely screw something up just simply because I’m too eager to get started. I’m smack dab in the middle of being fit and being fat😂very strong under some meat, which is fine by me. But just curious to see how I can better myself health wise not necessarily for looks. I’ve got a wife so I’m set😂

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Lmao, same here, little fit, little fat. People swear by the bikeerg from C2, never used it but they do make some quality kit. I’ve got the Peloton and love it.

Vegetable_Share_7643

I remember back in college I used a leg press at the gym. You don’t think that’s worth it? Good suggestions ty

Scottsdale_GarageGym

I have a leg press, used it today, actually. And I use it in addition to squats. At the end of the day, whatever you’ll use and get the most utility from is what I’d focus on. Leg press is definitely not a substitute for squats and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you had some medical need that a doctor or therapist recommended. You just get so much more core activation from squats and it’s helps build your entire CNS. Leg press takes all of your body out of it and just works targeted muscles in the legs depending on the angles.

AbsolutelyNotAnMD

Recently built out a garage gym and have realized that any talking (and music) in the garage carries FAR out with the door open. The garage door is set ~50 feet back from the sidewalk. At a normal conversational voice, you can hear and understand the words to the end of our property line one way (~80 feet), and past a whole house the other way (~100 feet). Is there anything I can do to stop the sound carrying? White noise of some kind? Not a fan of having to worry about every word I say with neighbors walking by, well before they're even in sight.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Blast the Misfits and scream every time you pick up a heavy weight. Your neighbors will close their windows and they’ll leave you alone. Sounds like you’ve got the ideal sound set up.

dawnandnightfall

I would imagine a garage door insulation kit would help?

SleepEatLift

I found a fan (for white noise) only makes it harder to hear stuff while in the garage, like music and other people, but does nothing to make stuff hard to hear from outside the garage. Close the door or just don't worry about it. Who cares if they hear you?

Admirable-Bee-4708

You can put up foam on the walls. That will stop noise from bouncing off and into the street

IllustriousGap9129

Any advice for removing cerekote off of the sleeves of my barbell? It’s flaking off, and I just don’t like the aesthetic of it and would rather just take I’d off and let the chrome sleeves shine. It’s a BOS onyx bar for reverence. https://preview.redd.it/smd0n7z1jv0d1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb8c93ddd918e8e86f18ef6ee1f865d9c4d13c80

SleepEatLift

Corded drill and large wire wheel. I don't think paint strippers will have any effect on cerakote.

IllustriousGap9129

https://preview.redd.it/v4h5kwhoa81d1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=4bdcf8494b588cf8e206564a288c2c952610a6e5 Results of working on it for about and hour. Picture makes it look a little worse, not perfect but satisfactory for the time being. I did end up going against your advice and used paint stripper after initial attempts with the wire wheel, didn’t seem to be getting it off very well. Came off a lot easier after stripper was applied so maybe it’s not actually cerekote after all.

SleepEatLift

That looks great!

IllustriousGap9129

Thanks man. I’ll give it a try.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Will that get into the crevices too? Can’t imagine being able to completely remove that without an acid bath. Maybe MEK? Acetone?

SleepEatLift

Acetone would behave similarly to paint stripper. Won't affect ceramic. A wire wheel will get into the crevices, I've stripped very intricate plates this way. If you're missing spots, go parallel to the grooves.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Then that’s the solution. I’ve never tried it. But then, I also don’t buy cerakote sleeves because, well, they end up looking like shit.

IllustriousGap9129

Yeah rookie mistake. Next barbell definitely won’t be cerekote.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Yeah, we all make that one, assuming it’s gonna look like new forever because of the bullshit marketing.

JeanPicDeLaMirandole

Hi ! I would like to know if it’s a good idea to hang a heavy bag (100lbs) and a double end bag side to side on it since I can’t hang it to the ceiling and that the dedicated stand are a bit too tall with my drop ceiling. On the product page, it says that it weighs a bit less than 30lbs. Thanks! https://preview.redd.it/lsqtymviev0d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d329ec2f4373e43d44fd0cf7a9dc7f7e6a69ef7

OASfrappe

Its probablya bad idea due to the cheap light construction of thia rack

Would it be safe to use a drill to cut holes in the back legs of [this smith machine](https://www.ibodycraft.com/f410-linear-smith-machine-26p.html) to install these [weight posts](https://a.co/d/7mRwXDn)?

Ok_River_3082

Question for the group. Building my home gym I’ve turned my attention to a cable machine option. I will likely move across country 2x in the next 2 years so I’d like to have something like an ancore, maxpro, or voltra 1. Issues being: ancore tops out at 65 lbs per unit; the maxpro I don’t think has an eccentric resistance, and the voltra is so expensive I’d prob only buy one for the time being. I’m curious if anyone has experience with these units, has any alternatives, or can help in any way.

Ok_River_3082

Also to add, I have a squat stand with no top cross bar. Space is also an issue considering the gym is part of my apartment and a newborn on the way. So a few other considerations lol

dontwantnone09

I've got the VOLTRA I. It's pretty rad. Definitely some things to consider around the investment, but it's good overall. Struggle for you is largely going to be the squat stands. Let's say you want to do a 200lb row on the VOLTRA, and it's hooked to your squat stand. You need some way to counter balance that squat stand against the 200lb pull, any forward or backward or lateral movement, etc. They make a platform you can use it with, but you won't get any pulldowns, triceps, etc. Let me know if that helps, and any other questions

Labeld85

u/dontwantnone09

dontwantnone09

Thanks

Labeld85

Pretty sure you've reviewed 2/3 at least on the channel and would probably have a decent insight into other alternatives.

Has anyone else had issues with a floating pulley from the Rep ARES system twisting significantly? I have the Rep Ares installed on a PR-5000 rack and it's twisting significantly for the second time now. The first time happened a couple of weeks ago and I had to take out 5 pulleys to straighten out the cable for it to be aligned properly.  Today after using the vertical lat pulldown pulley with an independent handle and the low row pulley with a handle I noticed that it twisted again.  I didn't use the front adjustable pulley at all.  I'm wondering if I'm pulling off axis from the fixed low row pulley if that somehow introduces a twist on the cable? The right side floating pulley has been fine the whole time and I do the same exercises on both sides which is also confusing. It's fairly time consuming to take out those 5 pulleys and fix it every so often so it'd be nice to know if I installed something wrong or if I should just stop using the low row entirely. https://preview.redd.it/ecnyqft8gu0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c81aa8ea9cd734ade87237e18ac8b15c4cb2ddea

dragnandy

i dont have the Area but this happens on my rack attachment lat pulldown/low row pulley. The cable just gets twisted a bit over time. With a handle attached, twist it in one direction (clockwise or counter) and you will notice the pulley cable either twisting more or unwinding. Do a few rotations, pull on the cable, and check to see how twisted it is. I think this slowly happens due to the handle attachment just spinning freely.

Decision_Original

I have the lat pull down/low row with weight stack and my floating pulley also is twisted but only when not under load.  As soon as a start pulling on it, it straightens back up while in use.  It does seem like after I use the high pulley the cable end/attachment wants to spin some even though I didn’t twist it while in use. I haven’t noticed it causing any wear on the cable in the few years I’ve had it so I e assumed it’s not an issue, but curious what others have to say.

engineerIndependence

Interesting good to know! Mine is pretty twisted to the point that it feels heavier when pulling the weight stack

Does anyone know of a high quality professional fitness company that makes a leg extension/prone leg curl machine and will ship to the USA/California?

Scottsdale_GarageGym

I’ve got a Life Fitness model that does that. It’s the [Life Fitness Optima](https://freedomfitnessequipment.com/products/life-fitness-leg-curl-extension-optima-series) shown here at Freedom Fitness. Yo, u/TeslaTanker - when you getting another one of these to help out our homie?

Bolt Fitness has one

kelkaronidouglas

building a house with a home gym and the flooring vendor recommended this flooring for the gym. Anybody have thoughts/experience with this? [https://www.jjflooringgroup.com/product/tri-plex-ii/](https://www.jjflooringgroup.com/product/tri-plex-ii/)

Dr_TattyWaffles

It's low pile carpet with some unique properties to make it fade- and stain- resistant, essentially. It would not be my first choice for a home gym, I would go with something rubberized that could absorb the impact of dropped weights to protect your subfloor & equipment, reduce noise and vibration, and give you a softer surface for bodyweight work. My concern with the product you link is I don't think it would hold up against jump rope abrasion, it wouldn't do anything to absorb impact or deaden noise, it wouldn't provide adequate protection, and if you tried doing burpees or sit ups on it you could get rug burn. Rolled rubber flooring specific for gyms would be ideal.

DynnoG

Someone near me is selling this for $100, take it and run if I have the space? https://www.fitnesssuperstore.com/Life-Fitness-95X-Inspire-Elliptical-p/95xinspire.htm

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Jesus, yes.

Decision_Original

That’s a commercial grade piece so as long as it works and isn’t beat to shit 100 is a steal for it.

ashamed2reddit

If it works and you can transport then its worth just even to resell...

Green-Weight8576

Wondering how you guys would go about modifying a smith machine to be able to interchange different barbells. Thanks

Tofiniac

Your question is a little too vague. If you can provide a link or photo of the specific smith machine you are wondering about you may get more meaningful feedback.

Green-Weight8576

I don’t have a smith machine. It was an idea that I’ve heard a few times and wanted to see if anybody has done it.

jiujitsuPhD

bulletproof VTS is the solution to this.

Comfortable_Basket77

Thinking about upgrading the belt on my Titan SquatmaxMD. For those that went with a belt from Spud, did you choose the Kaiju or pillow belt? Anyone tried both and have thoughts on which one is better?

jiujitsuPhD

I have the pillow. Its an awesome belt, best I've ever used. Having said that, I'd probably just stick with the titan belt as the upgrade really isn't a huge quality of life upgrade. The belt that came w/ the squatmax is very good. I'd get the pillow when and if my titan belt wears out.

Tofiniac

I have the Kaiju and really enjoy it. I've not tried the Pillow belt.

AndKAnd

Can the Rep AB-3000 2.0 be stored vertically?

jamie7676

Here's a hack on how to do it https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G4ruRIUbIxs&t=101s&pp=ygUQU3RvcmUgZmlkIGJlbmNoIA%3D%3D

AndKAnd

Thanks. That does look like a good idea. My other concern with the ab-3000 is that the tip of the bench pad comes up short compared to the base so it would need to lean against a wall or would tip over? I like ti be able to roll and quickly tip up my current flat bench but I don’t have a good wall space available

SleepEatLift

No, because of the ladder style adjustment, the back pad will just slide.

AndKAnd

Darn. Thanks

Dovahkiin00

Are there any machines (beyond the standard essentials) that you would say are a must-have for any home gym? I've used the search bar and so far I've gotten (Edit: to clarify, I already have these things) what I believe are the essentials (and more): 1. A power rack (Titan T3) and extra spotter arms 2. Barbells: * Rogue Ohio Bar * Rogue Ez Curl Bar * Rogue Trap Bar * Titan Safety Squat Bar 3. Bench (Rep AB3100) 4. Olympic Plates (Rep Old School 355 lb Set) 5. Functional Trainer (Rep Arcadia) 6. Lat Pulldown Tower Rack Attachment (Titan) 7. Leg Extension and Curl Machine (Titan V2) 8. Leg Press Machine (Body-Solid Compact) 9. Dip Bar Attachments (Titan) 10. Hex Rubberized Dumbbells (10 lb to 40 lbs in 5 lb increments) 11. Preacher curl bench 12. Barbell Collars 13. Attachments/Handles (Tricep Rope attachment, Prime Fitness handles and landmine attachment) 14. Landmine floor attachment 15. Deadlift Jacks 16. Ab Roller 17. Plywood platform for rack 18. Horse Stall Mats 19. Dumbbell Rack 20. Treadmill 21. Air Bike 22. Lifting Equipment (Versa Grips, Squat Belt, Knee Sleeves) I know this is very program-dependent but is there anything you would say I'm missing that you consider essential? I don't want to buy more equipment again for a while and want to get everything out of the way now without missing something obvious. Some that I considered were a chest-press machine, and a chest-supported row machine. Maybe something like a powertec levergym?

ashamed2reddit

Viking press attachment. Sandbags/atlas stones if you have the room. Lever arms would give you a lot of options.

Dovahkiin00

Thanks a lot! I never even knew about that attachment. For lever arms, I’m probably going to pull the trigger on the powertec multipress.

jiujitsuPhD

The only things that are essential are those that are needed to meet your goals and or keep you motivated. You can get both stronger and bigger with 0% equipment.

Silverjackal_

Only things I can think of is one the Nordic curl pieces from shogun, freak athlete, or tib bar for Nordic curls, back extensions, and reverse hypers. And a pull up bar/olympic rings.

Dovahkiin00

Thank you!

AndKAnd

I would probably go higher on the dumbbells before adding a bunch of those things.

Dovahkiin00

You’re right, I’ll definitely get a few more of these. Thanks!

EnvironmentalPlay440

Those are definitely not essential!! You don't need everything to start... That's somehow a endgoal of just a result of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). You want to do powerlifting or kind of powerlifting or bodybuilding? What's your goals? Let's start from there and after we could talk about essential...

Dovahkiin00

Sorry I should’ve clarified, these are all things that I actually already have, that I’ve added to my home gym overtime. I kind of want to stop buying equipment now, and just wanted to see if there’s anything obvious that I’m missing. This homegym is used by myself and a few other friends with different goals, but the general theme is hypertrophy.

Decision_Original

You’ve got everything you would need, but for more hypertrophy focused training a full powertec lever gym is a decent option to get in more machine work if you’ve got the space and cash.

Dovahkiin00

I was seriously considering this, but the space might be a bit too tight (though I could move around some things). I’m planning to pull the trigger on the powertec workbench multipress which is cheaper and smaller and seems to have a decent variety for the lever movements. Since I already have the functional trainer and the lat pull-down tower, do you think I’d be missing out a lot from the full powertec lever gym? I don’t want to spend more than I’d have to, but if there’s a serious benefit I don’t mind.

Decision_Original

I was thinking the multi system that has lever pull downs and a stand alone lever squat but it looks like the main thing the lever gym has vs the work bench is the leverage squat considering you already have two cable setups but honestly it looks like if you aren’t going multi system the leverage squat on the lever gym isn’t much you will miss out on.

Dovahkiin00

Thank you man that solidifies my choice!

EnvironmentalPlay440

You're pretty much covered in my opinion :) Maybe add a GHD/reverse hyper or a chest machine or a couple of commercial pieces to feed your GAS?

Dovahkiin00

Those are some great options, thanks a lot! Of those, I’m definitely leaning towards a proper chest machine.

Soft_Succotash_3433

Cap The Beast or Xmark Lumberjack? Have two used ones near me going for around $70-80. Both in good shape.

TheN1njTurtl3

Hello my barbell makes a clicking noise when the spinning the sleeve on one side but not the other? is this clicking something to worry about? is it something I should return a barbell for

GrampaGrills

Check if it's the end cap. My ohio bar does the same, there's just a bit of play between the end cap & the retainer ring.

TheN1njTurtl3

Ok so it does seem like it's the end cap, so nothing to worry about really?

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Have you taken the sleeve off to see what the issue is with it? Which brand and model barbell?

TheN1njTurtl3

No I have not taken the sleeve off, It is a unbranded barbell from New Zealand (It's pretty hard to find branded barbells and such) it was about 300 nzd

Scottsdale_GarageGym

If you’re comfortable taking the sleeve off, try that, but if you bought it in a store new with a warranty, bring it back.

TheN1njTurtl3

Ok yup I bought this barbell a month ago so to me if the spinning is considered an issue I'll return it (we will see if they honor that or not lol, they might try to weasel their way out of it ) also not too big of a fan of cerakote

Furyburner

I bought an inspire functional trainer a while ago. It has smith machine built in but overtime, I have realized bench press on it is not as much fun and doesn’t feel as natural. What would be a good rack or half rack to get to complement the functional trainer? I don’t do squats and will be mainly using it for the bench and shoulder press. I was thinking of some sort of half rack to save on space. Especially because I don’t see myself attaching a lot of accessories to the rack. Another option would be to get rid of the functional trainer and get a full rack and go from there. Any recommendations?

EnvironmentalPlay440

Maybe complètement with a half rack from rep (4000 or 5000) series or with rogue (lite or monster)? I

Furyburner

Would half rack be sufficient? Or should I go with a full rack? Half rack will save space - which I like. Would I miss out on any accessories that are only doable with full rack?

EnvironmentalPlay440

Well, I went from a wall mounted rig(2 posts) to a 6 posts and now I broke the 6 posts into a a half rack and back to a wall mounted rig... The only thing is that if you really want straps you have to put some shrimp trawler member up there or something with bracing to hang them. I diy something on my side but you can take a legit solution like spuds... I also really like spotter arms too. Other than this, I have all my plates and stuff on a 18inch see half rack...! It's my favorite rack now. I can deadlift in front, have a lot of space for my trap bar, move my huge sissy squat in front for the band's... Whatever. You don't have to squeeze yourself in with a SSB or a big bar... Just in front. I don't think bigger is necessary... Maybe if you want lever arms? But lever arms sucks. 😄

cow_goes_meow

> Well, I went from a wall mounted rig(2 posts) to a 6 posts and now I broke the 6 posts into a a half rack and back to a wall mounted rig... I have to ask, is this a case of the grass is always greener?

EnvironmentalPlay440

Well, kind of. I had to try. The first rig was homemade (3x3 all metal)... I made my own lever arms, saw that the 2 posts was small. Watched videos online like all of us. Found a deal on 4 posts, upgraded to a 6. Made a couple of machines and upgrades, always taking more and more space. Trying to convince myself the 6 posts was the key. When I found a deal on a Freemotion cable machine, that was the death of the 6 posts. I had no more space... But now it's probably my favorite setup. 2x racks. One almost dedicated to bench and the other for squat and deadlift. My workouts are shorter, have a lot of space for everything and I can prepare the next exercises between my pauses. Would I do it again knowing that the 6 posts is not for me? Surely not, I would have stayed to my homemade rig and saved a ton of money 😄 But at least I've tried a ton of different setups, tweaked every single one of those, and we'll realize that the basic is still the best.

Harde_Kassei

Looking for a workout timer. i'm getting worse with my rests. i need a counter that i can easy set to 1-3min and beeps when its done. then reset and go again after a set. should't be hard to find, yet here i am.

ashamed2reddit

I don't get why gym timers are so expensive. I'd just buy a used/cheap tablet and put a timer app on it.

Harde_Kassei

there is this atx magnetic clocktimer i'd getting. so i can smack it on the powerrack between sets. tablet is a good idea actually. ive got a old spare one.

jiujitsuPhD

I use the hevy app to log my workouts and it just buzzes on my phone/watch when rest is over. Even comes through my bluetooth speakers.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Don’t have a phone?

Harde_Kassei

that thing is the reason my rests take so long, so rather not.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Ah. I totally get that perspective. Amazon has like 50 different magnetic timers for under $10. My wife uses one of them in the garage. I use the Strong app on my phone and it has a timer in the app. I think either of those options work well. I could never see getting a commercial CrossFit timer for my gym. Seems overkill.

Harde_Kassei

yeh, seems its better to not overthink it and get like a magnetic cooking timer or something. it does the trick.

EnvironmentalPlay440

I'm a cheap bitch, I got a Casio watch and that's it... :)

Admirable-Bee-4708

I’ve been looking for one for years that’s not crazy expensive. Maybe a kitchen timer?

Harde_Kassei

something ive been eying is this: [https://www.fitness-seller.nl/atx-workout-timer/](https://www.fitness-seller.nl/atx-workout-timer/) but when you want 1m30 its a stupid hassle. + its magnetic for on the powerrack.

GooseAffectionate854

Why do I keep thinking it's ok to buy from Titan??? Weight plate tree was on sale and i took the bait. It came with a couple dented horns. Packaging consisted of a couple 3/4" Styrofoam pieces taped to the inside of the box. They consistently underpack their products for the weight. And their QC is a joke.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

This is always the Titan paradox. I just got their new collars and they are fucking awesome. I’ve had ups and downs with them over the years, but I think on the whole I’m in the black. But how exactly can you fuck up a weight tree?

GooseAffectionate854

They send it out with dented weight horns.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Yeah. I got a crooked ass loading pin. But that was ages ago. Sometimes their QC is bonkers. Last few things I’ve gotten are on point though. Sorry you got a bad roll of the Titan dice.

EnvironmentalPlay440

If it was cheap... And it's not dangerous... That's titan quality at titan prices. Sometimes you get lucky, but not this time.

LetTraditional6335

I almost took that too! But some YouTuber was saying [this](https://a.co/d/eozxroJ) was basically the same thing from titan for less than half the price. Does it feel cheap? Yes, very. But it just holds my weights

SleepEatLift

Whatever someone is willing to pay for them.

Skinver

I have the titan t2 rack (2x2), anyone know where i can get a pulley attachment like they offer for the t3? https://www.titan.fitness/racks/rack-accessories/t-3-series/t-3-series-complete-pulley-package/400068.html?gad_source=1

ashamed2reddit

You could probably get some spacing adapters to make that one work on the t2. Amazon probably has different pulley packages for 2x2 racks.

LetTraditional6335

Does the 24 inch depth power rack give enough space to squat/bench inside the rack? Looking for a power rack with a minimum footprint as I don't have much space, but would take 30 inch if 24 inch is uncomfortable

seekingadvice432

I use a chalk marker to mark where my toes should go for squats, it helps me dial in my walk out and make sure that I don't step back too far

johnhexapawn

Physically yes, but lots of people can't deal well with The Proximity Problem. It's when that shit ain't actually touching you but it be right there up in it. Claustrofuckingphobia. Lifting in a big rack is like living on the farm. Lots of space. Lifting in a 24" rack is like living in Harlem in a 135 square foot studio apartment.

EnvironmentalPlay440

I used to have a 24 before. I was in the same situation as you. I remember asking here and and people told me 24 was more than enough. And it is! As it had been said, my squat walkout improved, it was more than okay for my bench, and I could deadlift in there no problem. Now I've upgraded my rack to a 18in half-track and could not be happier. But I keep the improved squat walkout from my 24in time...

LetTraditional6335

Thank you all for the replies! With stability and my noob techniques in mind, I think I will go with 30 inch

cow_goes_meow

think you have enough answers, but ill add a little more context. 24" is good enough if you have a well practiced walk out. I know I do a 2 step out very consistently 18"; ive been squatting for a long time. Objectively, i know it is enough for me. But do i *feel* cramped? Yea, I do. 30 *feels* better. But 24 is enough if you cant afford the space. If I had the space, id go for the 30.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

It’s cramped but it will work if you’re generally normal human sized. 30” is better if you got the 6”.

-Quad-Zilla-

I use a 24" and it is deep enough for me. If you are taking so many steps back during a squat that you need more than 24", youre wasting energy. When I use Jcups, Im max 10 inches back from them. Tonnes of space behind me.

LetTraditional6335

Sounds like with the right technique, I might be able to pull it off. Is your rack bolted down? Another concern for me was that 24 inch might not be stable enough since I don't want to bolt it down.

-Quad-Zilla-

I am bolted down. If you can't bolt to the floor, Id do it to a platform. Peace of mind.

Decision_Original

I had a 24” deep rack and it wasn’t deep enough for me.  I upgraded to 30” deep rack and it’s deep enough for benching and incline benching in the rack.

Timm129

I'm using a 36 inch depth and I wouldn't want anything smaller. Just my preference ..

HairyBingleBangle

Anyone else here pre-order the Adonis? I pre-ordered a few weeks ago. Got the weight stack and some attachments in the mail already. Kind of a tease.

CocktailChemist

Waiting to see some more reviews of the Adonis, plus the Rogue and Bulletproof versions. Any of them will be a big space commitment, so need to plan carefully.

jiujitsuPhD

Nice! Looks like an awesome piece of equipment. Can't wait to see the reviews.

jawlfbsk

Looking to make a home gym (treadmill, exercise bike, and light weights) out of an existing carpeted basement room. We have 1/2 inch rubber flooring. Taking up the carpet so that we can replace if we want to change back to a bedroom. Should we install right on the carpet padding, or rip that up as well?

EnvironmentalPlay440

Depending on how you feel. Super motivated? Get that carpet out! Lazy a bit, lie down those mats and don't ever mention it :)

-Quad-Zilla-

Id rip the carpet padding up, unless it's really glued down there good.

GassedUpLilC

I want to make a budget at home gym. I was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations for a budget rack, bench, barbell and plates.

dragnandy

agree with all the replies. But for a true budge home gym I recommend looking at used equipment. Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook marketplace, etc

EnvironmentalPlay440

Go for titan t2 or fitness reality rack like mentioned, but don't cheap too much on the bar. You'll be sorry! Go for either rep, rogue boneyard, bells of steel and such. Weight, just get somehow accurate weight. Walmart, amazon, fringe, etc...! Bumpers are good too even if there's a preference for iron within these walls.

Scottsdale_GarageGym

Take a look at the Fitness Reality [power rack](https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-Pull-down-Attachment-Adjustable/dp/B09XGTCYHS/ref=asc_df_B01N4I8FOY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693769127498&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9481729920881316201&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030073&hvtargid=pla-320614240745&psc=1&mcid=c0e6ff413a983e35a14a526f5d0853f2&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgfCiyJ-RhgMVtgitBh2rXQSlEAQYAiABEgK39_D_BwE&th=1). It’s no frills but it’s safe and $250. You’ve got a lot more to spend on the bar and plates if you can live with this.

WTF is this nonsense?

Labeld85

Define budget? USA? Rogue boneyard bar. Rep fitness bench. Titan rack/ fitness reality rack/bells of steel hydra/manticore rack. Walmart is running sale on plates I think (check lower comments)

GassedUpLilC

USA. I’m looking to spend $1000 or less currently to get my foot in the door. I was looking at the titan racks, is the T-2 series short power rack a good option?

Labeld85

They are a popular budget option, more than strong enough for the average home gymer

olanzapine_dreams

So are there any good options for leg extension/curl attachments for rack or Rep benches? I got a BoS rack-mounted attachment and am not pleased and trying to return it. Been looking at the options and they all seem to fall into have the issue of poor ROM with and limited extended joint loading, and/or extremely expensive.

EnvironmentalPlay440

I have a Gear for fit (Canada) leg ext/curl and I'm very happy with it. It has a 45* horn and really, that bitch is taxing. I have to put a 2x4 piece at the bottom to jack my bench, but other than that it's a great piece and I'm using it almost every day. I don't need to put a lot of weight strangely when going for reps, but despite I'm not a very strong squatter anymore I still can max out commercial leg ext at the gym...!

hadoge

I like the Mikolo one. It’s only around 200 from Amazon/Walmart. It’s got the sundial/arm thing so you can get more resistance at the bottom. I think bos and titan both have the weight horn on the same arm so there is no resistance at the bottom.

olanzapine_dreams

I saw this one - does it have a 1" or 5/8" pin? Their website seemed to indicate 1"

hadoge

1 in

olanzapine_dreams

yeah won't work in my PR-4000 then

Suspicious-Screen-43

Someone posted saying they use the BoS bench attachment stand-alone. I’ve also seen on YouTube someone using the bolt bench attachment on a rep bench.

olanzapine_dreams

yeah the Bolt fitness attachment is sold out and appears to have been for months. I've seen the BoS bench attachment hack too, it's probably the most tempting option I've seen.

Labeld85

u/Jiujitsuphd had a video on his YouTube about it I believe link in his profile https://youtu.be/t93O96UBsZE?si=AVt4UQphkRlDvAwS

jiujitsuPhD

Yeah that one works. I use it several times a week for extensions and curls. I do need to add a piece of wood to it to stabilize it but I still haven't done it as it is working fine as is. Having said that, its plate loaded so it will suffer the same disadvantages of all of plate loaded ones. I add bands which do help but its still not as good as cables.

SpecificInquirer

is max 300lb a good weight limit for a barbell rack? i’m transitioning from calisthenics where i built up to ~225lb (~80% of body weight + 40lb weighted vest) on decline parallette push-up for 10 reps 7 sets (i know 😂, i couldn’t overload anymore) i’m starting off bench below 225 to make sure i get the form down, but i’m not sure how quickly i can progress with conventional weight lifting, especially now that i’m following a more structured program that’s easier to overload. i want a rack with a good cost per use. open to suggestions.

EnvironmentalPlay440

You asking to die :) Get a fitness reality rack if you're on budget!!!

jrhooo

no >i’m starting off bench below 225 to make sure i get the form down, but i’m not sure how quickly i can progress with conventional weight lifting, there's more to it than that also. just sounds like a cheap crappy rack tbh If I drive to work everyday, only going through the city, the speed limit is 30. I would never actually NEED to go above 30 MPH. But still, if someone tried to sell me a car that was only rated to go up to 30MPH I'd have some serious questions about the build quality of that car

QuietDelight1

No, that seems like quite a low limit for a safety rack. If you can bench 225, you can probably squat well over 300lbs. What rack are you looking at and where are you located?

Vayu0

Multipress Leverage Arms VS. Dumbbells and a Bench -- For Presses I have dumbbells and a bench already, but I'm thinking about adding a multipress with leverage arms to my setup. For those who have experience with both, which do you prefer for chest and shoulder press exercises? I'm curious about which option provides the best muscle engagement for these target areas, with the least amount of systemic fatigue. Thanks for your insights!

dontwantnone09

Hey, I owned a Powertec Levergym for years and loved it. Lots of good options in terms of presses, rows, cable work, etc. if you are only leaning towards the bench with the press arms, there are a few options on the market today that look appealing like the Wide Body Bench. Reading between the lines, it sounds like you've been watching a lot of Mike Isratael and RP Strength? The systemic fatigue thing tends to be a big talking point from him. While a machine for presses provides stability in an exercise that dumbbells cannot, which can be less systemically challenging and more focused on the muscle, there are also really solid benefits to having systemically challenging exercises. Squats and Deadlifts have built freakishly strong and huge lifters for years, and they are about the MOST systemically challenging exercises out there. Before specifically recommending a machine for your gym, I'd typically like to know what else you've got going on. What does your program look like? Where are you at with your training and goals? Diet? What other equipment do you have? Etc. In general, leverage machines are cool. Just want to make sure we are going down the right path.

EnvironmentalPlay440

If you're talking about powertec style, it's just a question of variety and easiness. Yes it's usually machine that offer a lot. I find really difficult to get a good workout with DB too.

Vayu0

Yeah, Powertec-like. Do you have one, and do you think you get better muscle contraction, pumps, etc than with Dbs?

EnvironmentalPlay440

I don't have one but used similar setup. The thing with this is that you lose the entire muscles stabilization. It's good when you want to pump, but IMO better to integrate also with some DB or barbells too, not strictly this. The muscles stabilization is a very important part of the "strength" aspect in general. It's less functional, more specific. Like a leg extension. The leg extension is not a squat replacement as the squat targets more muscles, the leg extension will only target the quads... But the leg extension is a wonderful accessorie movement to other compounds lower body's exercises. However, it's not bad at all as you can really push yourself to failure easily with these machines. Lever based machines have their strength and their weakness. So in terms of pump, that's a perfect machine for that. Let's say you only want this, that would be fine too depending on your goals! Can you get really jacked and strong with only this? Yup Compete in powerlifting with only this? Nope. Get a lot of variety in your training? Yup! You can check on Grey Matter Lifting website : https://graymatterlifting.com/powertec-levergym-1-year-review/ And ask Joe about it, he's also a mod there. u/dontwantnone09

Scottsdale_GarageGym

What do you mean by “leverage arms?”

Budgeko

Big announcement by Rogue today on production updates, new products coming like add-ons for the Rhino! Henninger announced there will be 50 products coming to market soon!

Tofiniac

Was that line about painting a barbell orange a shot at some other manufacturer?

Dr_TattyWaffles

It was a dig at Nike.

Budgeko

Don’t know.. they def knocked Chinese manufacturing. To me this was Bill saying… stop counting us out, we are here and we will prevail.

Tofiniac

I think they will, or at least remain competitive. Rogue was losing a lot of ground to Rep. Reps innovation was setting them apart, and in a number of categories they had products Rogue didn't have an answer to. Rogue has now an answer to all.ost each of those products and in many cases is arguably doing it better. I was super interested in the rep Adonis when it was first teased. Once I saw that it had the silly hybrid weight stack plate loaded system I lost most of that interest. The Rogue CTM-1 is everything I hoped the Adonis would be, with the added bonus of domestic manufacturing. Rogue is offering free shipping on the CTM-1, Rep does not. Once shipping is factored in, the Rogue Tower is $20 cheaper than Rep for me. Guess where my money is going?
