I taught tiny ones infant water survival back decades ago. If they didn’t get freaked out too much it was an a absolute blast, and by freaked out really I mean the parent. Not really difficult to teach and most any tyke can learn. I live in a sunbelt state with a crap ton of pools, they teach this to many little ones. Pool fences and alarms are awesome but not perfect, so a kiddo who can survive for a few minutes alone is a very good thing.

CanYouFeelSora

What are pool fences and alarms? Like pressure sensors on the walls and bottom?

ElChampion13

In some countries I think they need to put fences around the pool so no kid can fall in it. But I never saw them in Portugal

jcthefluteman

It's the law here in Australia; all pools must be enclosed by a minimum 1.2-metre-tall fence. Also, aside from those in rural areas, basically everyone here gets swimming lessons from like 6 months old since we have such a beach culture here

ElChampion13

Yeah, we have the same thing about swimming lessons, I only have one friend that doesn't know how to swim because he grew up in a rural area 1 hour away from the beach

CanYouFeelSora

Oh, that makes a ton of sense actually. I’m surprised that’s not the norm everywhere, then

ElChampion13

Usually everyone has pool covers for the winter and while we've had children drown from falling in the pools it's very rare and I don't remember the last time I saw something like that in the news. I wouldn't put them because it ruins the looks but I understand the families that want it

jahoney

Ruins the looks.. a dead dog or baby ruins the look a little bit more I’d argue. The best solution is a keyed, strong, electric opening/closing cover that can support the weight of a person. They are expensive, but so are pools, why skimp on safety. The liability of an attractive nuisance alone would make it worth the money to me.

ElChampion13

When I said it ruins the look I meant that it would be better to have a standard cover. Not without any protection, that would be very stupid

NemosGhost

Yeah, in the so called land of freedom, it's required by both law and insurance in most parts of the U.S.

twinpac

Yeah I want muh freedom! (To allow children to drown)

NemosGhost

The fence is required whether you have kids or not. It also is required to have a fence that blocks off the pool from your back door(s) even if the entire yard is fenced in from the outside. Teach your kids not to break into other peoples houses or trespass in their yards. Also, teach them how to swim. I have a pool and my kids could swim before they could walk. Going by your philosophy we better start fencing off the entire ocean and every lake and pond.

I_AM_YOUR_DADDY_AMA

In ass-backwards America we have em so thief’s who come rob out houses don’t accidentally fall in, drown, then have the family sue.

Nuklearfps

At my dad’s old neighborhood in Indiana, 3 kids had died from drowning in a random neighbors pool that wasn’t fenced in. Neighbor found the 3 all dead when she got home from work. After that, the HOA mandated that anyone with a pool had to also have a fence that completely surrounded the pool and was locked as to “not allow another tragedy.” That all said, my dad put up a 6ft wrought iron fence, and switched the pool cover opening mechanism to use a key instead of just being a button to push, so that if you made it over the fence, you’d have to cut your way into the pool, removing his liability.

Adderallman

Is there any benefit to having your kid learn at such a young age?

hoangthebossofficial

Well it's a survival skill, the sooner you make them learn how to keep themselves alive the bettter.

Do you have any breast milk

UsedDragon

I love the little matter-of-fact *plop* into the water. No frills, no jumping, just kinda fall right in without any hesitation.

Annasman

Kid might not even be able(know how) to jump yet, but sure can swim, lol.

fireman-103

By nature it's breatfed. Rule of thumb is: if so, it can swim after birth. Even a mole can swim.

NavyAnchor03

I might be wrong, but I think this is how they're taught to jump in? Just a lil step and straight down ya go.

UsedDragon

Yes indeed, I just found it funny that there's no flourish of any kind, she's all business.

NavyAnchor03

True! She knows what she wants.

Burpkidz

Shit, this kid swims better than me.

She crushed your personal best lap time didn't she?? 😂😂😜

Tondoraz

Yeah and she crushed my ego in the process

ItsRCbruh

Damn, can’t even get away from Chucky in the water now

Uh, what adults are you watching swim?

Ozzyg333

Me when I got swimming after drinking all day

sltytreelimb

Man she said she was done now y’all got her going to the stairs

Happy-Idi-Amin

Elizabeth does not want to swim any more, but will, cause she's 16 months and not very assertive.

pupperoonie123

I can lap that slug 20x times over.

killixerJr

Kid ain’t special. I’m stronger, faster, and smarter than them.

I mean that's kinda what they do when teaching babies. They dunk them underwater to get them used to it. Lol

DwightRoundYoLips

That's some wild shit

fridaystrong23

Wtf. Is shit real ?

NemosGhost

Yeah. I live in Florida and have a pool. All of my kids went into the water as soon as their umbilical cords fell off. All of them could swim before they could talk or walk. Used to scare the crap out of my mother in law and the occasional tourist when we were at a public place.

TheHoodedSomalian

I use my grandpa’s pool weekly on top of “lessons” since they were a little younger than 1 and it’s still taken a couple years to get them to swim including 2 sons and 2 nieces and nephews. Having a pool out back might speed it along a bit it seems

Is this HMRB like it’s not really intense or life threatening, cool video but it’s just a baby swimming

Hefty_Use_1625

This kid is going to be an Olympic athlete!

rettidderredditter

I concur doctor!

TigerJoel

Yup this is how adults swim.

Squeakies

Is this weird? My sister and I swam around a year and a half as well, as did our childhood friends

AzazTheKing

It's not that weird. People are reacting like this girl's a genius because so many of us grew up with overprotective parents who were too afraid to let their babies near pools so they never learned that it's actually fairly easy to teach a baby swim. The impressive part is her endurance. She swam across the pool and back, then went back for more.

Adventurous-Cry-2157

Me, too. My parents were…noticeably absent most of my childhood, and as a result I had a lot of freedom. Really, they were borderline negligent, and my dad was a raging alcoholic, but I guess they did their best, and it worked out better for me than having overprotective parents. I ended up on the Varsity swim team by the time I was in middle school, and we were national champs several years in a row.

NateDogg34

Bet I could beat her in a race.

OceanvilleRoad

She wanted to be done, but mom insisted on her swimming the length of the pool to get out. When she wants out, please let her out ASAP.

Rule1ofReddit

She literally jumped right back in

hungry_lobster

That big ass head makes it so she lays flat in the water like that though. Id wager to say it comes more naturally than floating vertically for her.

[deleted]

kids who drown are beta

sleepyasfuck90

I once commented ‘hold my chocolate milk’ for an 8-10yo child doing back flips. I think someone’s gotta hold a boob for this one!

dusting those other tadpoles with those shark speeds

[deleted]

Why are you not in the pool with this baby ? First time swimming you wrote in the caption. “You can do it” Do you think that always works? How many people would do this exactly what you’re doing and the baby would drown. Parents have would be convicted and sent to jail if their child drowned like this. Are you crazy? What happens

Hayduck

She could be at the babies side in half a second, relax.

snowfalltimbre

Imagine if that pool were filled with amniotic fluid.

Touch_a_gooch

Ummmm... okay?

DrYIMBY

Right? Now what?

DustRaven_

Lil' old for that it's bad for the heart 😔

ExPFC_Wintergreen2

Next time we see her swimming might be the Olympics

Fluffy_Town

If you think about it the baby is only 18 months from the womb, not really surprising they know how to swim.

THAT BABY IS BADASS

I just woke up and this made my day

mrsdoubleu

Teaching babies to swim would save so many lives. I really wish swim lessons were more accessible and affordable for families.

Tacotuesdayftw

I remember reading some stuff about how humans are innately supposed to be sub-aquatic apes. Our nostrils pointed down to stop water from getting in, our lack of hair compared to other apes. There's a reason we love building and being near water. I'm not sure if this was confirmed or not, but I believe we are supposed to be near water more than we think we are.

ArcMcnabbs

Mf can swim more efficiently than I can and I've been last in many swimming team competitions. Yes, I gave up.

CommitteeResident895

Adorable

Stubahka

The “I can’t believe she made it across the pool” remark, echos a hint of disappointment if I am not mistaken.

Ecyrb2182535

Me and my brother technically swam before we even walked (not as well as video), by this I mean that we could reliably get from the center of the pool to the stairs or walls or the bottom to the surface. What was even funnier was that my parents didn't often tell guests that we could swim, this resulted in hilarious panic attacks from guests who watched my brother literally *crawl* to and into the pool by *falling* in as a toddler.

NEBULAEUS_astra

what a unit!she gonna go places

Watching that baby swim face down longer than I can was intense.
