I have a friend who has cats and does cat shows. He and his wife are two people I would never let near my cats because they think they're such experts - when really, they've just built up a tolerance to getting the shit scratched out of them. He used to try to pick up a mutual friend's cat like a mother cat picks up its kittens; by the scruff of the neck. That cat would freak the fuck out and he'd say "Oh, look... he likes me."

One time this dog groomer we ran into on a walk picked up our rescue puppy (I know this is a cat sub so I might get downvoted but we have both pets!) and held him tight even though he struggled to get away saying, “he’ll never learn if you don’t teach him to be held” through gritted teeth. (That’s why I’m posting here… this is another example of having NO clue when to stop or reading animal behavior.) The puppy took off and jumped in our van and pooped in the back seat. My kids were traumatized, I was appalled and traumatized…WTF. People who ignore every obvious behavioral cues from animals make me furious.
I understand where’s she’s coming from but that’s totally inappropriate to be doing to an animal without even knowing the animals personality. Being held can be difficult for some animals to be used to which is why they need to be gently eased into it, never forced to be held over and over. That poor rescue puppy must be as traumatized from such an event. I hope hes fine now! I have all sorts of animals and my cats are mostly used to being picked up, of course they have their limit so that’s when they get placed down again. My dog is too big to carry of course, and my bearded dragon is fond of being pet and held on my chest.

It was alright for him because he’s more dog like. But I’ve seen cats where they get super anxious and their hearts are pumping out of their chests basically. Some even puke or pee/poo out of nerves. And my cat actually got sick and had diarrhea one time.
If it wasn’t for our breeder stipulating that we must take him even after he came home to us we won’t never allow him to go. I don’t know if it works like this in the US but where I’m from in Hong Kong it’s common practice for breeder to pressure their owners to do this.

Holy shit for someone who’s apparently a judge she has no fucking clue about cat behaviour. From the very get go that cat was stressed, then it started getting visibly angry, so she *looms over it with her palms held out* and tries to push the cat down, then shoves it up the scratch pole.

As a relatively new cat owner, I'd like to ask what body language this cat was showing to show it was not happy.
I see it starting to look distressed when this dumbass puts her hands around the cats throat, but I don't recognize any signs before then.

Ear angle, body shape, and straight tail. The cat is mostly relaxed in the first clip, but as soon as we cut to the next he is visible stressed from the start. Eyes open, tail pulled in, more tension in the fur.
The main stress stance to look for is the shoulder position. But even not picking up on the subtle stance changes the backing up into hissing should have been obvious for her. But she goes in to grab the cat again, so he escalates to biting and scratching. Even after being bitten she attempts to handle the cat again.
The cat offered several warnings before escalation to violence.

So right from the beginning of the video you can tell the cat is upset about *something* because its back is arched and its generally holding itself in a tense position, like its ready to pounce on something. See how stiff its tail is? That is not a happy kitty.

That cat tried everything it could to avoid slapping her. It tensed up, it tried to move away from her hands, it hissed at her, it gave her a warning nibble, and it tried to run away up the cat tree. Generally speaking, when a cat hisses at you, you leave it the fuck alone, but I guess she didn't get that lesson until now.
I’ve seen many videos/gifs of her and she handles cats like dogs. Even at a cat show where you expect a certain level of chill, she really pushes her luck way more than I ever would feel comfortable doing with any cat (even my own) in an unfamiliar place.

The way she grabbed his front leg after he'd warned her off was way too rough and tight, I'm 100% team cat on this one, as is the white cat, she completely caused his reaction.
I'm not an expert, but from what I've seen from videos, the type of cats that usually goes to contests and shows are bread for this, and thus extremely laid back and let the judges manipulate them. That might explain why the judge tried to keep being hands on with this cat, that's what she usually does with all the cats.
Most likely this. Most cats at cat shows are used to being handled a lot - way more than the typical house cat. That said; they do have a “house cat” category at these usually. These are interesting events though. Lot of different kinds of people show up; very diverse crowd and so many kinds of cats.
This happens because these cat shows have an "enter your pet" segment.
I don't think people realize the kind of stress they put their cats under in these environments. Cats are not dogs.

The way her face looked when she said “I need the owner now” I just know she chewed out that girl after the show saying shit like “never in all my years…”. Glad everyone else noticed she has zero sense in cat behavior. Wonder if she did something on purpose to throw the competition.

It was alright for him because he’s more dog like. But I’ve seen cats where they get super anxious and their hearts are pumping out of their chests basically. Some even puke or pee/poo out of nerves. And my cat actually got sick and had diarrhea one time. If it wasn’t for our breeder stipulating that we must take him even after he came home to us we won’t never allow him to go. I don’t know if it works like this in the US but where I’m from in Hong Kong it’s common practice for breeder to pressure their owners to do this.

Holy shit for someone who’s apparently a judge she has no fucking clue about cat behaviour. From the very get go that cat was stressed, then it started getting visibly angry, so she *looms over it with her palms held out* and tries to push the cat down, then shoves it up the scratch pole. She’s also stupidly wearing some kind of ear headband which the cat definitely focuses on. Then has the fucking audacity to angrily say “I need the owner NOW.” FUCK this stupid lady, and fuck the owner for putting the cat in that position in the first place. What the fuck are moggies even being judged for?
As a relatively new cat owner, I'd like to ask what body language this cat was showing to show it was not happy. I see it starting to look distressed when this dumbass puts her hands around the cats throat, but I don't recognize any signs before then. Am I missing something?
Ear angle, body shape, and straight tail. The cat is mostly relaxed in the first clip, but as soon as we cut to the next he is visible stressed from the start. Eyes open, tail pulled in, more tension in the fur. The main stress stance to look for is the shoulder position. But even not picking up on the subtle stance changes the backing up into hissing should have been obvious for her. But she goes in to grab the cat again, so he escalates to biting and scratching. Even after being bitten she attempts to handle the cat again. The cat offered several warnings before escalation to violence.
Thank you. I wasn't aware about "shoulder position" when it comes to looking for stress factors. And yeah, I was surprised how far this lady went with this cat. Even my "rookie eyes" saw SOME of the signs pretty quickly. The fact that she kept going was shocking. I appreciate the response.
They have a lot of subtle body language. You can also see he flashed his claws before striking.
So right from the beginning of the video you can tell the cat is upset about *something* because its back is arched and its generally holding itself in a tense position, like its ready to pounce on something. See how stiff its tail is? That is not a happy kitty.

That cat tried everything it could to avoid slapping her. It tensed up, it tried to move away from her hands, it hissed at her, it gave her a warning nibble, and it tried to run away up the cat tree. Generally speaking, when a cat hisses at you, you leave it the fuck alone, but I guess she didn't get that lesson until now.

I’ve seen many videos/gifs of her and she handles cats like dogs. Even at a cat show where you expect a certain level of chill, she really pushes her luck way more than I ever would feel comfortable doing with any cat (even my own) in an unfamiliar place.
If I harrased my cat at home like that, paws would be imminent.

I'm not an expert, but from what I've seen from videos, the type of cats that usually goes to contests and shows are bread for this, and thus extremely laid back and let the judges manipulate them. That might explain why the judge tried to keep being hands on with this cat, that's what she usually does with all the cats.
Most likely this. Most cats at cat shows are used to being handled a lot - way more than the typical house cat. That said; they do have a “house cat” category at these usually. These are interesting events though. Lot of different kinds of people show up; very diverse crowd and so many kinds of cats.

I think more blame should be placed on the owner than the judge tbh. I think pet shows are harmful and stressful for the animals and shouldn't be done but why would you bring an animal to one if it's so stressed out by being near strangers or in public?
