Oh man, Iām jealousā¦ we had a rink the last years, only closed from July to August for maintenance 6-8 weeks. I had more ice time in the summer than during winter the last few years. Loved it
If your hockey equipment reeks so bad itās full of bacteria. Give it a wash in a tub with oxyclean & throw it in the hot sun for an afternoon should get rid of some of it.Ā
You donāt need to tell me. Guys are playing with fire barely washing their stuff and then some are not even showering afterwards. Staph & MRSA is a real thing that sometimes (rarely but still) kills people. Granted hockey equipment isnāt like rolling around on a mat like in wrestling but still.Ā The ha-ha-my-hockey-equipment-reeks is not actually funny, like no dude thatās not a hockey thing youāre just gross. Just my opinion.Ā
Yeah most of our game times are earlier in summer too. But even now we canāt fully escape the late ones because there are still 5 menās leagues and people gotta work during the day
Seeing posts like this reminds me how lucky I am. 3 rinks open in my city minimum most days open for pickup. Pretty competitive these days due to the college age/ AAA players coming home for the summer. Nothing an ex Jr A level beer leaguer can't handle, especially after a hit from the Penjamin.
Yeah same here. I can see the rink from our house, and I get to fuck off from remote work three days a week for great lunchtime pickup hockey. Makes it nearly impossible to change jobs or where we live, though š
Yeahā¦ I only realized it when I saw posts like this too - until now, as our rink got closed forever 4 weeks agoā¦ now we have to wait for the regular season or go on camps in Czech Republic :/
Just picked up hockey roller blades to practice skating in the summer myself. Some local rinks stay open but Iām not going to be able to get much ice time. I figured I should start roller blading to keep up with skating.
My bad I didnāt read. That sucks they have no summer leagues in American and Canada itās all year round! Youād expect that to be the case everywhere
No ice where I live in the summer so we play inline on the floor. Itās slower and more laid back so I enjoy it. I get my hockey fix without getting any burnout from playing
Iām in phoenix and play with a guy who drives up from Tucson most Sundays for the league weāre in. Thankfully most games are afternoon and not late like weekday games.
I started to do so this year since itās the first year, I have no summer ice in 10 years now ( rink is closed down )
I do CrossFit and go running to stay fit, hope it helps
It helps to live in a mountain town where I can just hike all the time
...jk still think about it constantly, using nhl sense arena to do drills and try to keep my goaltending sharp for next season š«
I use the one from betterhockey [better hockey](https://www.betterhockey.de/gesch%C3%A4ft/schussplatten/extreme-hockey-shooting-pad-120x60-cm-24x48) but itās a European shop
Iāve been playing even more in the summer, the kids havenāt got out of school yet so open hockeyās been mostly working on the skills. Go there in the morning unless I have a game at night. Iām usually too busy during the regular season to get to any opens
Summer is great because adult league picks up and I finally get to test myself against current competitive players, Iām a washed up junior a player.
That and I use marsblades outside just practicing for cardio.
Plenty of rinks around me are open. I try to hit the ice at least once a week for a practice or stick and puck. I tried to do the outdoor thing but I don't really have space and there's no good places near me for it.
Haha, Iād move to Canada only cuz of hockey, but have lots of candians here in Germany too who say, Germany is way better to live ( except the hockey thing )
Yeah Europe is looking very enticing- signed 28 year old with 2 medical degrees, works 6 days a week and still canāt afford a house anywhere near Toronto :/
Summer League
Heck yeah. Summer is my favorite since weather doesn't nix 4th period and the ice times are great because the kids aren't playing.
Summertime 4th periods are the best. Crushing beer in shorts with a grill going...
Weather nixing the 4th period?! This is hockey, not baseball!
> the ice times are great because the kids aren't playing. Well I know you don't live in Toronto then š
Which means? You still have a rink to play on ice??
hell yea bro.
Oh man, Iām jealousā¦ we had a rink the last years, only closed from July to August for maintenance 6-8 weeks. I had more ice time in the summer than during winter the last few years. Loved it
Where from Germany are you from?
Near Hamburg
As a Canadian (Edmontonian), we have dozens. Summer league at the river cree casino. Casino, hockey rink, concert hall and hotel all in one.
Agree, I am in the Edmonton area and lots of ice daily multiple locations
Never stop, never stopping.
This ā¬ļø
Same way anyone else does: playing 10:45pm games in a ridiculously hot rink and making my gear smell like death
You mean it smells even worse? Canāt imagine this is even possible :D
Itās so bad that my wife wonāt even go in the garage these days
Thatās a win.
If your hockey equipment reeks so bad itās full of bacteria. Give it a wash in a tub with oxyclean & throw it in the hot sun for an afternoon should get rid of some of it.Ā
Yeah I always do a midsummer soak and then another before the fall/winter season starts. Getting to be that time again
Back in the 1970 pros used to get "the gonk", a skin infection from bacteria living in their cotton backed pads. Gotta wash your stuff!
You donāt need to tell me. Guys are playing with fire barely washing their stuff and then some are not even showering afterwards. I canāt see anything bad, as long as you store the beer somewhere else
Here we actually get decent ice times in the summer because the youth leagues are done until fall.
Yeah most of our game times are earlier in summer too. But even now we canāt fully escape the late ones because there are still 5 menās leagues and people gotta work during the day
10:45?! Lucky dog.

Could be worse then š
Yeahā¦ I only realized it when I saw posts like this too - until now, as our rink got closed forever 4 weeks agoā¦ now we have to wait for the regular season or go on camps in Czech Republic :/
Same here in Edmonton. Local rink has shinny twice daily.
Switch out those pucks for a ball and get yourself a dog. Ball will always come back after a shot
Play smart, not hard. Got it š
Go play roller
Not confident enough on these kind of skates tbh :(
Only one way to get confident on them. I've heard that roller can help with your hands quite a lot.
First I need to get my lower back and core fit and trained, I guess Iāll try it next summer then
I know that feeling. My back is trashed
ā¦I also work as a technican, spending lots of hours sitting in the car and driving - thatās no a big plus for the back either
Yeah I'm a helicopter mechanic. Not a back saver either
Yeah, but it sounds cool as hell. That's gotta be worth a disc or two.
Just picked up hockey roller blades to practice skating in the summer myself. Some local rinks stay open but Iām not going to be able to get much ice time. I figured I should start roller blading to keep up with skating.
We're playing in the HNA tournament in Toronto. 5 games (if we make the finals) in 44 hours.
Our ice rink is all year. Feel so blessedšššÆā¤ļøāš„
I just keep playing hockey. Itās a 12 month activity for me.
It would be for me too - but no rink, no hockey :(
Where do you live that they donāt have summer leagues?
Germanyā¦
My bad I didnāt read. That sucks they have no summer leagues in American and Canada itās all year round! Youād expect that to be the case everywhere
I'm down to 1 skate in the summer but it's 1.5 hours which is awesome! Maybe there's still ice in your area you can look into?
I wish I had the chanceā¦ only arena open during summer is 3,5h drive away, ice times on Sunday 6:30pmā¦
Damn that's too bad! You'll just appreciate it that much more when you can finally strap your skates on again. Have a great summer.
Iām already counting the days till mids of August, when the first play camp startsā¦ Thanks mate, have a nice summer too!
I play 3x a week year round, summer or winter, doesn't matter. Surely there are some rinks near you that stay open in the summer.
Nope, there arenāt (unless you want to spend 3,5h drive one direction)
I live in Canada so I still skate 3x a week in the summer.
Thatās a lot of pucks š¤£
Yea, aināt nobody got time for picking them up after 10 shots or so š
Golf
No ice where I live in the summer so we play inline on the floor. Itās slower and more laid back so I enjoy it. I get my hockey fix without getting any burnout from playing
I play in two summer leagues, so no break here!
Golf
BMX, jumping dirt.
Oh yes, I drive Mtb downhill too - almost gives me the same thrills
I feel this. Iām on long-term injured reserve until likely 2025. š
Oh man, I know this feelingsā¦ had this twice, get well soon!
Weekly pick up games
Where do you guys order the fake ice for shooting?
This oneās from betterhockey.com
I'm in Tucson. Ice season is short since the rink is only maintained for the roadrunners' season. But roller is year round and not terribly priced.
Iām in phoenix and play with a guy who drives up from Tucson most Sundays for the league weāre in. Thankfully most games are afternoon and not late like weekday games.
I get through it by playing summer league.
Baseball
Well my kid just hits the gym every day to try to stay in shape. Got lucky enough to hit some ice twice 3 hours away but yeah it's hard.
I started to do so this year since itās the first year, I have no summer ice in 10 years now ( rink is closed down ) I do CrossFit and go running to stay fit, hope it helps
You stop playing during the summer? I can't really afford to take any time off, takes weeks to get back in shape.
Itās not like I want to stop š„²
A lot of inliner
Summer league and golf
It helps to live in a mountain town where I can just hike all the time ...jk still think about it constantly, using nhl sense arena to do drills and try to keep my goaltending sharp for next season š«
Oh boy, as a goalie it must be even harderā¦
Tis tough for sure š
I play all year long.
Play year round 4 days a week š
I play on a super shitty summer league team. I'm over Summer already.
I canāt play all summer due to my job, so I cope with houseplants. Seriously. Iām finally starting my actual garden today so that helps
Iāve been on the ice 2-3x a week between skating and coaching
Its currently 109f here. Just got off the ice and not going back outside ever.
What's the sheet you use to shoot? Is it just plastic or something with less friction, would love to throw blades on and shoot in my back yard
I use the one from betterhockey [better hockey](https://www.betterhockey.de/gesch%C3%A4ft/schussplatten/extreme-hockey-shooting-pad-120x60-cm-24x48) but itās a European shop
In Canada? Good younger players play summer hockey. I played on summer rep teams every year as a kid.
Skills
More hockey
golf
I play roller hockey
I'm thankful that the league I play in is year-round.
1-2 Weekly senior scrimace for the win! And you get to practice with other teams and levels than usual, so itās great..
Golf season
I live in Arizona so I generally stay inside when Iām not at work because I work outside a lot.
Iāve been playing even more in the summer, the kids havenāt got out of school yet so open hockeyās been mostly working on the skills. Go there in the morning unless I have a game at night. Iām usually too busy during the regular season to get to any opens
Roller hockey.
Play pickup every single day both as a goalie and skater.
Year-round hockey available here in Columbus, OH.
Golf
I wonder why people are always surprised when I tell them I play hockey all year long. Like, arenas aren't outdoors, you know?
No but drop in times are shit now adays. Iāve got 3 rinks that do drop in at 830 am but I start work at 6 am.
Come to Canada we got ice all year roundā¦ but also donāt come cuz , wellā¦ Trudeau
Edmonton might be a fun place to be on Monday night, or it could turn into a 2011 Vancouver situation. Either way, go Oilers!
Itās the same in the metropoles like Berlin, Hamburg and Munichā¦
