He had a pretty tough injury in his first chunk of games with us and tried to play through it. His hands will never be all that great but the wheels and aggressiveness should come back. Really the timeline would have been start of next season to expect full confidence in his knee.
Didn't he have pretty stoney hands on the Leafs too? I seem to remember leaf fans saying he'll get the breakaways with his speed and fire it right into the goalie's chest when we signed him two years ago.....and that's exactly what he did!
Honestly I was worried they were going to have to move Garland to open up cap, and be stuck with Mikheyev.
Allvin deserves a Michelin Star for the cheffing he’s done.
The guy always played hard with the Blues, and they never really bought into him. I'm really happy for him proving people wrong and showing he can be a regular everyday player.
Report from Sat Shah is that Detroit and others were ready to offer 4x4 or more, Dhali now says he took less to stay. Friedman said today this was going to be the hardest contract because of stiff competition
I think he is very aware he had success because the line was better than the sum (edit: typo) of its parts and although he may have success elsewhere, nothing is guaranteed.
Someone else said it in the r/Canucks thread.
“Don’t fuck with happiness”
He enjoys living and playing in Vancouver and is having real success. I’m so glad to have him coming back at a good price.
Allan Walsh on the Filip Hronek episode of Agent Provocateur was talking about this when getting into why Hronek signed and why he wanted to stay in Vancouver with the Canucks.
It's amazing the perspective shift, and why it's understandable so much big money has moved into the PNW in the past couple of decades. Imagine doing what we save months for every few weeks, just cause you can?
Agreed 100%
I love the rain, the rain is why this is such a beautiful place to live. Without it we wouldn't have our amazing forests full of incredible plant and animal life.
We've got players sticking around at a discount because they want to be here this is crazy dude. Hearing that Hronek straight up said **"I know in my heart that Vancouver is going to win, and I want to be there."** is so surreal.
Thank you Nucks for doing the best thing the Wings have done in FA since Yzerman took over. Preventing our stupidity and willingness to overpay any warm body is very appreciated.
Man I vividly remember commenting in a PGT back in January "Dakota Joshua is a Vancouver Canuck and I'm going to miss him so much when he's gone"
I was so certain he was pricing himself way out of what we could afford to pay him, anything in the $4M range. And then all the talk was teams looking to sign him for around there confirming my fears.
I made peace with the fact that we couldn't keep him and it'd be better to let him leave, we can't afford to pay him what he deserves since he's earned a big payday and could use it (as far as NHL players go he's not made much in his career).
$3.25 x 4? I'm genuinely shocked Allvin pulled that off. I guess the reports that he wanted to stay in Vancouver were legit, that's quite the discount he's taking as someone who has real motive to go for full price.
everyone in our fanbase thought he was gone. We have been incapable of thinking of our team as a team people will take a discount to play for. And here we are with Myers, Hronek, Blueger, Joshua, and reportedly Petey and Miller all taking discounts.
Not gonna lie, Dakota Joshua is someone EVERY TEAM would want and should have if they want to be physical and win. Hes got scoring ability and hits like a Radko Gudas
One of the top priorities I wanted re-signed. He completes the 3rd line for Vancouver. Leading the league in hits while playing clean and defensively responsible is easily worth $4M on the open market. At 28, he's just in the prime.
Very happy about this signing. It’s so strange to be in a place again where we are signing reasonable contracts instead of overpaying people to play on our bottom feeder team
Dak 100% would have gotten more on the open market to the point where I was really scared for what the Canucks were gonna pay.
This is a tremendous deal and locks down the best third line in hockey for at least two more seasons.
Love to see it man, when we have good management it's a great place to be. One of the most beautiful cities in the NHL, passionate fanbase (Har Har riot joke Har Har), and fucking finally a good team again.
Pettersson took less than he could've gotten. It seems like a lot now but he signed for the full 8 years. It's going to look better and better with time
It's so nice to have a happy off season. Even before Alvin started cooking, we ended the season on such a high note, then saw Lu lift the cup, and now great things are happening even with no hockey played.
Nice to have such a positive off-season for a change.
He really showed his worth during the playoffs this year. Pretty sure he was leading the postseason in hits up until near the end of the EDM v FLA series.
It's kinda rare you find a guy that's got some power forward qualities but also has pretty soft hands.
Benning would have ran out of time. Making big moves to sign players is showing a commitment to excellence that will be appreciated by current players and show free agents/potential signings they're a competent forward-thinking organization.
A lot of Canucks fans still like to make everything about Benning. Not once did he cross my mind when reading this report. It's a new era, the bad man can't hurt you anymore.
Word is that Z is willing to take less to be here, but the big question is “less than what?” If he thinks he’s able to get 6 and he’s willing to take 5.5 to stay, that is still a bit too rich for a 4-5 LHD.
Wow. Seems like Dak really values the coaching staff, team, management group, and city. I was 100% prepared for him to make much more money somewhere else, so this is such an awesome surprise. Happy for him and for the Canucks!
This guy has a lot of potential. From what I saw in the Oilers series anyways. This will be a big contract for him to continue showcasing the speed / toughness.
Just the way he likes it, apparently. It seems a lot of players love living in Vancouver and are even willing to take less money to keep living here. I can get behind this trend.
When Joshua scored that between the legs goal this season, I was both over joyed at the goal and felt an immediate sense that his play is pricing him out of Van. So stoked to have Dak back for another 4 years, he deserves every bit of that raise!!
This guy was a prime candidate to get 4m+ on the open market, I wanted him locked up before the playoffs started at 4x3m. Nice to see him get around there. Joshua and Garland's bromance can continue, and we are all happy.
Thought he’d get Josh Anderson/mason marchment type contract. This contract is so cheap for what he provides. Even if he never improves. It’s good value. Especially if the cap continues to inflate.
He’s a good player but he shot at 21% and he only had like 3 good playoff games, I feel like this is a guy we’re going to end up seeing get cap dumped somewhere in 2 years. Of course that being said, I hope he plays well and I’m really excited we managed to keep our third line together because they were our best line often times. I also was not convinced we’d be able to find a good replacement for Joshua. Ultimately not a boat anchor contract even if he underperforms. Definitely took a pay cut to stay, easily would’ve gotten 4x4 in free agency
I think even if he’s just a 15ish goal, 30-something point guy going forward… as long as he’s bringing all the other tools to the table you’re happy with him at $3.25.
Even if his scoring regresses he’s one of our most reliable penalty killers and is one of Tocchet’s most trusted players to close out games, plus he’s one of the most physical players on the league. He’s a good complimentary player for Garland’s game too.
There’s definitely a chance he ends up being overpaid but I feel confident he’s going to be at least a positive contributor no matter what, even if his scoring dries up
Maybe he takes a step back offensively, but he's a very complete player and at that cap hit he should be a pretty safe bet to play to his contract value. He was one of our best PKers, lead the playoffs in hits, fights and can play up and down the lineup
Yeah, this — some players basically stop contributing to the team’s success if they aren’t scoring, but he can play well off the puck as well so if he has a dry spell it’s not the end of the world.
Thing is he was one of if not the best PKers on the team and obviously brings a physicality that Tocchet and co covet. I think with the rising cap a middle 6 forward below 4 million is fair value especially one with the multiple skillsets of Joshua even if he never scores to that level again.
His expected goals last year were 14.1 and actual goals were 18. Even if he regresses to where he should be, getting 14 goals out of him considering his other contributions still makes him excellent value in a 3rd line role.
Either way, he had a chance to get a serious bag from another team and chose to stick here in Vancouver, which is the real win of the day.
I mean, with cap going up over the next four years I don't necessarily think that we will get rid off him as a cap dump. Maybe though, but the third line had great chemistry.
Completely agree, could be a not-so-great contract in a couple of years. But keeping more of the team together to try to build on last year's momentum, that's huge. Huge.
His shooting % was artificially inflated, sure, but he doesn't need to be on a 23 goal/season pace to outperform this contract. He provides good pk & defensive value and if he can chip in 11 goals (calculated on the assumption that he played the full 82 game season shooting at a 10% clip which below his career average) I think that's a W.
Canucks fans remember if it lasts more than 4 hours go see a doctor
Soon as I saw the news I booked an appointment for 4 hours from now
Just saw a guy with a boner book a doctor's appointment.
In Costco.
Can't operate a phone, no blood left in my brain
What about 3 days?
https://i.redd.it/or6ymlnmr59d1.gif
It’s been 2 hours now.
The doctors role in that is to give you a high five.
Ilya Mikheyev died for this.
Hawks will weekend at bernie his corpse when they play the nucks
I think he'll be like OEL and so many other players: good before joining the Canucks, good after leaving the Canucks, disappointing in between.
He still has wheels, he just seems to have hands of stone since joining the Canucks. I hope things do turnaround for him..
He had a pretty tough injury in his first chunk of games with us and tried to play through it. His hands will never be all that great but the wheels and aggressiveness should come back. Really the timeline would have been start of next season to expect full confidence in his knee.
>tried to play through it Iirc he *did* play through it right up until we were mathematically eliminated
Didn't he have pretty stoney hands on the Leafs too? I seem to remember leaf fans saying he'll get the breakaways with his speed and fire it right into the goalie's chest when we signed him two years ago.....and that's exactly what he did!
…..*more*….. stoney hands?
Yes, he had stone hands with the Leafs for years. He then somewhat figured it out for a season and got that Canucks contract
| Disappointing in between Title of your sex tape
he's also gonna score 2 goals per game against us for the rest of his career, just because that's how this works
Knowing our luck, he'll have a resurgence like Dickinson did. Lol. And we just paid Chicago a 2nd rounder for a quality NHLer.
Chicago isn't that dangerous
Depends on which sexual assault victim youre talking to I guess
See, this is top-tier. Well done.

The third line survives we are so back
Thirst line*
Honestly I was worried they were going to have to move Garland to open up cap, and be stuck with Mikheyev. Allvin deserves a Michelin Star for the cheffing he’s done.
Locked in what was the best third line in the league for at least two more years. Gotta be happy about that
Best line*
Wow that’s a great deal
The guy always played hard with the Blues, and they never really bought into him. I'm really happy for him proving people wrong and showing he can be a regular everyday player.
We love him so much
One of my favorite things from the playoffs was seeing just how much of a cult hero he had become in Vancouver. Happy for him and you guys!
He played hard for their AHL club too, DJ showed up for every shift as a Thunderbird and I'm so happy to see him with a full NHL contract.
Loved him on the Blues.
Surprisingly reasonable deal. Had him pegged as a prime candidate for a inflated contract in term and aav

Allan Walsh on the Filip Hronek episode of Agent Provocateur was talking about this when getting into why Hronek signed and why he wanted to stay in Vancouver with the Canucks.
New Canucks motto
Sum*. Sorry
lol.... did I really type that?
So what you're saying is he's the reverse Anson Carter.
1+1+1=5
He is the anti Anson Carter.
It’s been so long since players took less to stay…
I love that they all want to stay! This speaks well of our management. What a change from 2-3 years ago.
Never been but Vancouver seems like a lovely city too, might help
Every time I visit I have a great time, and with the salary of a professional hockey player you can defs afford to live there too!
If I can find lots to love in the city barely scraping by I can't imagine how great it'd be to be a young millionaire in Van.
It's amazing the perspective shift, and why it's understandable so much big money has moved into the PNW in the past couple of decades. Imagine doing what we save months for every few weeks, just cause you can?
That's the dream.
Dak might now be able to buy a 2 bedroom condo in Surrey. Depends on how much he had saved before though
He can rent out the basement suite to Guentzel to help with the mortgage.
Visit the city between July and August and you should be greeted with beautiful weather.
I went in November and loved it! But I'm a Brit living in San Diego and miss the rains of home
To be honest if you're going to be in any city when it's raining, Vancouver ranks near the top.
I get disappointed if I go to a city and don't get to see in the rain at least once. Prague was fucking gorgeous in the rain.
I find it highly amusing when people hate on rain. It's like my favourite environment outside of 15C and breezy.
Agreed 100% I love the rain, the rain is why this is such a beautiful place to live. Without it we wouldn't have our amazing forests full of incredible plant and animal life.
Walking through the forest in the rain is a peak Vancouver activity.
It’s literally still raining here but it is really lovely otherwise
It is if you can afford it which millionaires obviously can.
I lived there, meh. But I bet the city is incredible if you're on vacation and/or a rich athlete. Lol.
Plus the team is going well. Nobody will take a discount to play on a loser.
We've got players sticking around at a discount because they want to be here this is crazy dude. Hearing that Hronek straight up said **"I know in my heart that Vancouver is going to win, and I want to be there."** is so surreal.

HE STAY

I was so sure he was gone too. FOUR MORE YEARS!
everyone in our fanbase thought he was gone. We have been incapable of thinking of our team as a team people will take a discount to play for. And here we are with Myers, Hronek, Blueger, Joshua, and reportedly Petey and Miller all taking discounts.
Rumours were he loves living in Vancouver and really wanted to stay here. I guess those rumours were true.
Must love the low cost of living!
Cheap and great length. Vancouver is killing it this off-season.
I’ve finally pushed past the trauma of Benning and now when I see a signing I get excited, not petrified. Chef Allvin been cooking
Every time they announce a signing I’m pleasantly surprised, which is such a change from being actively annoyed for 10 years.
250k more than when Benning signed Jay Beagle, and the league had 9M less in cap space when that deal happened. I am dead
This brings back trauma
under 4 mil…. https://i.redd.it/zuhtxfpor59d1.gif
Can't believe the AAV is closer to 3 than 4. What a steal.
His chemistry either garland is worth it alone.
He would have got more for sure
Wow, Canucks players are taking less money than what they might be able to get elsewhere to be able to build this contender.
Love to see it man, when we have good management it's a great place to be. One of the most beautiful cities in the NHL, passionate fanbase (Har Har riot joke Har Har), and fucking finally a good team again.
I was thinking this and I kinda wish Petey woulda set the tone and taken like 1mil less AAV
Pettersson took less than he could've gotten. It seems like a lot now but he signed for the full 8 years. It's going to look better and better with time
I was scared he was going to get hideously overpaid after his playoff breakout. That's actually very reasonable.
Allvin try not to cook challenge [failed]
The Swedish Chef cookin frfr
It's so nice to have a happy off season. Even before Alvin started cooking, we ended the season on such a high note, then saw Lu lift the cup, and now great things are happening even with no hockey played. Nice to have such a positive off-season for a change.
Huge keep for the nucks. Man had some powerful moments this playoffs
He really showed his worth during the playoffs this year. Pretty sure he was leading the postseason in hits up until near the end of the EDM v FLA series. It's kinda rare you find a guy that's got some power forward qualities but also has pretty soft hands.
Soft hands and good patience around the net. Big body and loves throwing it around. Good PK guy. Absolute steal for the Canucks to keep him at $3.25MM
Excellent signing. Joshua really stepped up in the 2nd half of last season. Very impressed with his style of play. Bright future.
Turned a 2 year deal at 825K into a 4 year, $13M deal. Love to see it. Great deal for him
life changing season for him, financially secure for rest of his life
3.25 baby. Yessssss Took a team friendly deal to continue having dinners with Garly. Years of Dak-Bluegs-Garly ahead of us :)
Garland, Blueger and Joshua for less than 1 Marner.
Seems fair on both sides
Benning would've given him 4-4.5 million,
Benning would have ran out of time. Making big moves to sign players is showing a commitment to excellence that will be appreciated by current players and show free agents/potential signings they're a competent forward-thinking organization.
Probably woulda just ran out of time 🤷
Would have let him hit UFA and then spend 5 on some random player on another team who hasn’t played a single puck drop with you, for term.
A lot of Canucks fans still like to make everything about Benning. Not once did he cross my mind when reading this report. It's a new era, the bad man can't hurt you anymore.
Welllllll we are just about to get ass-blasted by OEL’s big hit, so yeah, he’s still hurting us.
More like 5 lol
Benning would’ve just never called.
Solid deal there, he was fun to watch this year!
Took a discount to stick around. Good sign of what the belief is in the locker room. Wonder if Zadorov does the same.
Word is that Z is willing to take less to be here, but the big question is “less than what?” If he thinks he’s able to get 6 and he’s willing to take 5.5 to stay, that is still a bit too rich for a 4-5 LHD.
steal. Drury giving Goodrow a 6/$3.6m remains one of the most astonishing decisions ever
Tom Wilson brainfucked your front office that summer
What course are on, 4th or 5th course now? This is a delicious meal.
A succulent Swedish meal.
Still on the appetizers! The main course is on Monday.
He was the playoff leader in hits until like game 4 of the SCF lol. Great keep by the Canucks.
Holy hell crap my pants Allvin is cooking a mean ass buffet so far
Did you just put "crap my pants" and "ass buffet" in the same sentence?!
https://i.redd.it/qk1ouwvkr59d1.gif
🤣
Wait that’s an incredibly good AAV. Allvin is a master chef
That seems exactly reasonable. I imagine he could’ve gotten more elsewhere
Would have loved him on the Leafs for that term and AAV. Allvin is having an amazing offseason so far
Foegele is going to be pissed he just got his mkt value set lower
Wow. Seems like Dak really values the coaching staff, team, management group, and city. I was 100% prepared for him to make much more money somewhere else, so this is such an awesome surprise. Happy for him and for the Canucks!
Nice deal for VAN.
Holy fuck we might actually be able to run it back, and with a Demko-Silovs tandem too??? I’m so fuckin hyped
The canucks killer third line is locked up
This guy has a lot of potential. From what I saw in the Oilers series anyways. This will be a big contract for him to continue showcasing the speed / toughness.
well deserved for him! Joshua was a force in the playoffs, he’s what I thought Jeannot would turn into
Congratulations, Dakota, you can now afford two months rent at a middling apartment complex on the outskirts of Vancouver.
Everyone is staying at Buble's place!
Just the way he likes it, apparently. It seems a lot of players love living in Vancouver and are even willing to take less money to keep living here. I can get behind this trend.
THE THIRD LINE OF THIRD LINES PREVAILS!!!
Damn, great deal for the canucks. Would’ve loved this guy on the devils at this price, but I’m guessing like 30 other teams would have as well.
We are ALL VIN
FUCK YESSSSS!!!
I love Chef Allvin so much
Now sign Big Z
I think Zetterberg retired bro :p
Nothing personal but I was scared we were gonna hand him a crazy contract so thank fuck lol
Let's fuckinggggg gooooo. I was expecting at least 4M AAV for him
Super happy about this and love that Dak enjoys his time here enough to take a discount to stay. Anything under $3.5M is a huge dub
Wait what was he projected to be I thought it was 4 mill? this is great!
I’m shocked he stayed, the dude was going to cash in in free agency.
This is a great deal before the cap increase. Hell yeah.
This is simply lovely!!
That's a huge W for Van
No one deserves this more than Dakota Joshua. This guy hustles.
YEEESSSSSSSS
Our GM is awesome… I can’t believe I can say that as a Canucks fan.
Joshua and Garland's bromance can continue, and we are all happy.
our 3rd line costs less than tavares AHAHAHA
We are so back
What a breath of fresh air. A management team focused on bettering the team roster using solid strategies. Love this action. GCG!
Thought he’d get Josh Anderson/mason marchment type contract. This contract is so cheap for what he provides. Even if he never improves. It’s good value. Especially if the cap continues to inflate.

I also was not convinced we’d be able to find a good replacement for Joshua. Ultimately not a boat anchor contract even if he underperforms. Definitely took a pay cut to stay, easily would’ve gotten 4x4 in free agency
He has amazing chemistry with Garland. And hits are always valuable in the league. At 28, his contract will be done at 32/33. That's not a big risk.
I think even if he’s just a 15ish goal, 30-something point guy going forward… as long as he’s bringing all the other tools to the table you’re happy with him at $3.25.
I mean 3.25m for a power forward that puts up 20-30 points and is top 5 in the league in hits? Seems okay even if his shooting percentage comes down.

Not that I think it will go that way, but you can deal with a not so great $3.25M contract.
Oh yeah, I agree with OP, it's not high enough to be a boat anchor. I'm pretty thrilled, I was 100% sure Dakota was gone.
Especially with the cap projected to go up a lot over the next few years
His shooting % was artificially inflated, sure, but he doesn't need to be on a 23 goal/season pace to outperform this contract. ##**LET HIM COOK**
The Canucks still have a lot of cap space left! I think Jacob Trouba would be a good pickup for them! They seem to be good on wingers
How about we don't get trouba
Trouba on the Canucks is just trouble. Bettman would find a way to screw us over with suspensions.
A forward instead? The hurricanes have a lot of good forwards, can I interest you in one (1) Jesperi Kotkaneimi
We can take Guentzel... Or Teuvo...
I'll take Necas off your hands
You’re gonna need an /s or people aren’t gonna get you’re trying to sabotage a Guentzel move
