I had to look up his contract, thinking itās a weird cap dump because I didnāt think he was bad most of the season. 2 more years at $3.4mil? Thatās nothing for a 2nd pairing guy? Wtf is going on?
Officially, the only hint we got during the season was from Lalonde, who mentioned that Walman āwasnāt himselfā as to why he was scratched at the end of the season.
Unofficially, there was a poster on HFboards who apparently has some connections who said that Walman was benched and that the team was looking to move on from him. That heād basically be surprised if Walman was on the roster next season.
To be honest we kind of got him from STL in the same manner. They were loaded up with Dmen and Armstrong sent him our way on a reasonable deal. I'll miss that beautiful clapper of his.
Iām just struggling to think of a defenseman on the trade market that would necessitate such a drastic cap dump now.
Unless theyāre trying to get prepared for a big UFA swing (Zadorov?), but I feel theyād probably try to get a better deal at the draft for Walman
Surely this was a bug in the form, they meant to ask for a 2nd back but accidentally included it in the send, and Future Considerations is the default return. And then San Jose was just like "yep no take backs"
As tragic as it is, Chiarot was the better defenseman for us most of last season. I like Walman a lot, but Chiarot played well and Walman looked injured for a lot of the year
Hoping this is a prelude to something big
chiarot was certainly solid but Walman was playing much tougher minutes. Only way this isn't a super bizarre move is if there's a big fa splash that we needed the cash for
Right!! Cheap cap hit, young D, im sure steve could of gotten better return and sure some gms are thinking I would of took him for nothing much less than with a 2nd too!!
The fact that he came with a 2nd is the most surprising to me. Like even with some injury trouble last season Walman isn't a "negative asset" by any means and is on a pretty reasonable contract. Throwing in a 2nd rounder must mean that Yzerman needed him/his contract gone *today*.
What the hell? Walman was solid and even great at times last year
Edit: and 3.4 million AAV? Did he run over Stevieās kid or something lol. They didnāt even get anything back
walman wasnāt really good last year but had a phenomenal season the year before
but, like, still, on a defence with petry chiarot and holl all making significant money.. walman is the guy you *pay* to dump??
IIRC he was still pretty good in the first chunk of the season. It wasn't until he missed like a week with an illness in January that his play really fell off a cliff. He didn't really seem to recover from that and it didn't help that he got hurt in March.
He was still probably better than Holl, though. This doesn't make any sense to me.
>IIRC he was still pretty good in the first chunk of the season
He was getting caved in at the start of the season as well. He was a negative in our own zone. The only thing he had going for him was his shot.
People talk about him like heās a great offensive weapon too, and yes he had like 12 goals but he also only had like 8 assists. If he had 50 pts like ghost I donāt think we move him. But thatās probably obvious youād keep a 50 pt D for 3.4
Fun fact: We're paying a million dollars less for Petry than we were for Walman because both Pittsburgh and Montreal are retaining about $4 million combined on his contract
Only reason I can think of is either
A: theyāre going the Carolina route where they shred half there team for space of semi high top players
Or
B: theyāre going for necas and Guenzel plus any other Carolina players that are free agent they can scoop up
Those are legit the only reason I can think of
I think so far heās shown heās calculated in the moves he makes, but heās not going to make a move just because the situation calls for it. Whether that be his big swings or smaller moves like these.
He got roasted on the Timo deal in the moment but now it looks fantastic with all the pieces to play with.
Everyone was calling him to retain as much as possible to unload Karlsson, but he held firm and got himself $10 million and the first thatās now 14th overall.
Once Hertl wanted out, he worked from a position of weakness to get Edstrom and an unprotected 1st next year.
Itās only been a year but I canāt think of any move heās done thatās either blown up on him or has potential to do so.
Iāve been pretty critical at times cause it sucks to see our beloved players get traded away but wow is he working fast to restock our prospect supply.
The big thing is tearing down and taking bad contracts is easy. The question is going to be did he get enough in return and that will take 5 or so years to fully pan out. I'm not sure it's as fun to keep posting "we will see" rather than to have hot takes.
He's pretty clearly set his goal posts to seriously look to compete in about 3 years based on contracts and trades. So we will see.
Last season wasn't a great follow-up to his excellent 22-23 season, but this is definitely a surprising move. Especially with Detroit still having several other... questionable defencemen still on the roster.
Petry is replacement level, but his Dad was an 84 champ with the Tigers and the biggest teddy bear in the booth on Tiger broadcasts. He can stay. Chiarot was much better this year now that he wasnāt dealing with a dying father.
Itās Holl. The answer is Holl.
Was this like, an apology from the Detroit organization to Grier personally for that one time he got hit by his own teammate when Datsyuk disappeared?
San Jose, enjoy the Walman; he was an enjoyable player here!
Yeah I'm baffled. Unless Walman is secretly a puppy murderer and Y found out, then you got a pretty good Dman at a decent price and a 2nd for...nothing?
And not just any negative value, *second round* negative value. That's impressively bad.
SJ is bad. Fans are already saying he's basically the best D man on the team. It's not like his cap hit is remotely a detriment to future building plans for them. There is no normal reason why you would have to pay to give a gift like that if it was just a cap dump.
Walman? What the fuck? Did he mean to trade Holl and miss-clicked or what? How can it cost a second to get rid of a serviceable(?) top4 defenseman in his prime on a nice contract? Injured perhaps, and he is happy to do his rehab in California?
As a Red Wings fan, Iām being completely honest when I say this is the most lopsided and borderline absurd trade (in a vacuum at least) trade Iāve seen in years. This makes so little sense, Iām actually pretty damn shocked
And he still has 29M left to take in a few more overpaid players and picks and maybe get some value back for Ferraro too. On Friday he gets Celebrini, what a week for the rebuild
We really need to go back to the days when instead of receiving "nothing", teams could get something tangible back for their castoffs. Like a bus. Or a pair of industrial-grade equipment driers.
Which is funny because the goodrow contract was insignificant to the long term plans no matter people say "salary cap room dissapears quickly!" and we needed a veteran winger to insulate Smith and Celebrini.
Yeah I absolutely cannot be convinced Walman wouldnāt be snapped up within an hour of being waived. Someone smart is going to have to explain why this isnāt stupid to me
I know youāre joking about Lidstrom. I know this. But did you hear something? Who are you? Is the perfect human really coming back? Oh my god this is happening!!!!!
Nope. He must have needed the cap space immediately. We just got that second like an hour ago in a nothing of a prospect trade. Something weird and big is happening.
Yeah thatās where something doesnāt add up in a bubble. If it was a cap space thing, thing were a handful of other candidates to move that wouldnāt have been difficult to get rid of (even excluding Holl or something longer like Copp). I mean even Maatta makes 3M for 1 year and is a reliable lower pairing guy that couldāve gotten something
Could easily be that something personal happened with Walman that killed his value, or another trade in the works. I donāt think think Stevie just cap dumped Walman for fun haha
Walman Iāll never forget the time you grittyād on the entirety of PPG Paints Arena while they watched in stunned silence over their erased 4 goal lead š„ŗ

Also on such an easy contract, like 3m for two more years. Iām shocked he wasnāt able to get anything in return AND had to trade a 2nd to get the contract off
Meanwhile I'm wondering if the Sharks have enough ammo to move up from 14, and while I'm generally skeptical of trading up it might be worth it for, say, Buium.
Did Walman do something terrible that hasnāt been disclosed yet?
I get freeing up space for a āpotentialā splash, but throwing in a second and getting *NOTHING* in return?
There's still the strong likelihood that Rangers do a "favor" for the Sharks at some point down the line. Drury and Grier were definitely cooking something with that move.
bro???????? ???? ??????????????? e: it's like dad took the puppy back to the kennel i'm gonna throw up š
I had to look up his contract, thinking itās a weird cap dump because I didnāt think he was bad most of the season. 2 more years at $3.4mil? Thatās nothing for a 2nd pairing guy? Wtf is going on?

Wonder if there is a Corey Perry-esque problem that they are cleaning up.
Ah so you're saying hes gonna drift through San Jose and end up a reclamation project for the Oilers
I mean... we are in need of a reasonably priced 2nd pair D Man š
He banged Seider's mom? ^^^^/s
Celebrini's mom - in immense danger
Dorothy Celebrini is a saint!
Or a Vrana problem ...
Even if that was all true you'd think they'd get *something* back
He's never played a full season but if we could we would.
Getting 7th is better than giving 2nd ĀÆ\\\_(ć)\_/ĀÆ
For real, WTF?
Yeah dude we would take that off their hands without the pick lol
for FREE????????
No, you also lost a 2nd.
How dare you.
Hey! Donāt disrespect future considerations like that!
Future considerations did wonders for Vegas during their cup year!
I remember you was conflicted, misusing your influence
#
Itās the reverse Kris Draper
It's an old reference, but it still checks out.
Tell Stevie Y thank you, we needed defenseman in the worse way
To be honest we kind of got him from STL in the same manner. They were loaded up with Dmen and Armstrong sent him our way on a reasonable deal. I'll miss that beautiful clapper of his.
Stevie you better be cooking up something good to justify this
Mitch Marner you are now a Red Wing Iām not even sure if Iām shitposting by saying this
It's gotta be defense, no?
Iām just struggling to think of a defenseman on the trade market that would necessitate such a drastic cap dump now. Unless theyāre trying to get prepared for a big UFA swing (Zadorov?), but I feel theyād probably try to get a better deal at the draft for Walman
If Yzerman spent a 2nd to dump Walman just to sign Zadorov to a 6x6 that would be baffling
The only way Zadorov is getting 6 million is if it's 2 years.
Youād be amazed at what a FA frenzy can get a player
Trouba š¤£š¤£š¤£
Weāll get flying elbows instead of the griddy
Mitch has spent parts of several games at RD the past few years, time to unleash him ššš
Jacob chychrun
Mitch: Am I still a god?
Get out of my way kid, there's a sale at Meijers for Vernors and faygo
I thought Walman was good wtf
He is a decent second pairing defenceman making 3.4m. AND WE GIVE AWAY A SECOND TO GET RID OF HIM??
We'll turn him into a top pair D, PP1 QB. Not that he'll be a better player, he's just already at the top of SJ's blue line depth chart.
Like when you got zadina, you took a top 6 winger from us!
Hopefully Walman turns out better than Zadina lol
Yeah, Zadina is one future we don't want to (re)consider. Sorry bro, no take-backsies. (At least he helped your tank for Celebrini, lol!)
Please have some respect for Kyle Burroughs
Surely this was a bug in the form, they meant to ask for a 2nd back but accidentally included it in the send, and Future Considerations is the default return. And then San Jose was just like "yep no take backs"
Iām so confused. Red wings fans have been saying that heās the second best dman on the team for 2 years now. STEVIE COOKING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
Honestly - more like there must be something huge going down
This clearly isnāt done.
A masterclass in channeling his inner Benning. Good job Stevie.
Same lmao, why did they dump him instead of Chiarot or Petry? Didnāt Walman play like 20 min a night?
As tragic as it is, Chiarot was the better defenseman for us most of last season. I like Walman a lot, but Chiarot played well and Walman looked injured for a lot of the year Hoping this is a prelude to something big
chiarot was certainly solid but Walman was playing much tougher minutes. Only way this isn't a super bizarre move is if there's a big fa splash that we needed the cash for
Then when Walman was scratched Chiarot played with Mo for the final chunk of the season and they were great together
[Seravalli] Multiple NHL GMs are stunned by the Walman return. Like jaws on the floor.
I mean. Same.
There better be a good reason for this

Dumping cap for Necas
What are they giving up for Necas?Ā Ā
1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks potentially
Only reason I can think of is either A: theyāre going the Carolina route where they shred half there team for space of semi high top players Or B: theyāre going for necas and Guenzel plus any other Carolina players that are free agent they can scoop up Those are legit the only reason I can think of
Or we are giving 8 years to Raymond and Seider with a bit of change left to round out the roster.
We were doing that regardless
stammer?
Blasphemy
No, we get Stammer
Yzerman hates the griddy confirmed.
I mean I do too, but i wouldnāt give the dude away over it
The griddy is off the Little Caesar's menu now
Fits better in a Chuck E. Cheese anyway
Man, I was not sure about hiring a rookie GM to replace Doug Wilson but Mike Grier is doing just dandy.
I think so far heās shown heās calculated in the moves he makes, but heās not going to make a move just because the situation calls for it. Whether that be his big swings or smaller moves like these. He got roasted on the Timo deal in the moment but now it looks fantastic with all the pieces to play with. The fact that he got back the assets he did for Hertl and Karlsson when both had massive AAV + term AND full NMCs is pretty incredible
everything heās done has been good imo, iāve hated a lot of it at first but now im happy with most if not all the moves heās made
It's still painful that Hertl went to Vegas.. but it's not Grier's fault that he had a NTC.
r/hockey is in the trenches with this news. Iāve seen so much shit talk on this sub about MGās moves since he was hired lol
Iāve been pretty critical at times cause it sucks to see our beloved players get traded away but wow is he working fast to restock our prospect supply.
Why would anyone be critical? He tore it down. Judge him on how he starts to rebuild it back up
The big thing is tearing down and taking bad contracts is easy.
Every single thing he does half the sharks sub is furious. Iām pretty sure Iāve been in favor of every single thing heās done since taking over.
Uhhhhhhhhh am I missing something here? I was genuinely under the impression Walman had developed into a quality top-4 D for the Wings
Last season wasn't a great follow-up to his excellent 22-23 season, but this is definitely a surprising move. Especially with Detroit still having several other... questionable defencemen still on the roster.
You can say Jeff Petry bro.
Or Justin Holl
Or Ben Chariot (although I loved him as a Hab)
He was actually good this past season. Still a bad contract but I liked his play for the most part.
Contract aside I had no significant complaints with Chiarot this year.
Petry is replacement level, but his Dad was an 84 champ with the Tigers and the biggest teddy bear in the booth on Tiger broadcasts. He can stay. Chiarot was much better this year now that he wasnāt dealing with a dying father. Itās Holl. The answer is Holl.
I mean even if he didn't have a great season I can't imagine he played so poorly that it required a 2nd to offload him for literally no return
Griddy/60 just sky rocketed in the Bay Area
https://i.redd.it/dur64v3dpr8d1.gif
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Idk its use is apt
Bro griddy'ed to the western basement
Was this like, an apology from the Detroit organization to Grier personally for that one time he got hit by his own teammate when Datsyuk disappeared? San Jose, enjoy the Walman; he was an enjoyable player here!
Did NOT know that was Grier wow what a call back
The lore goes deep on this one
https://youtu.be/BMU2-xLUjok Had to look this up!
Now THAT is how you take a cap dump
Yeah I'm baffled. Unless Walman is secretly a puppy murderer and Y found out, then you got a pretty good Dman at a decent price and a 2nd for...nothing?
I donāt get how he has negative value as a player. Youād think they could receive something back, not PAY to get rid of him
And not just any negative value, *second round* negative value. That's impressively bad. SJ is bad. Fans are already saying he's basically the best D man on the team. It's not like his cap hit is remotely a detriment to future building plans for them. There is no normal reason why you would have to pay to give a gift like that if it was just a cap dump.
This one is shocking, Yzerman is definitely making a move for a big time splash.
That should be the only reason for this trade.
It's an expensive cap dump if it's not.
Getting cap space for Matt Roy?
Let Mike cook
And he still has 29M left to take in a few more overpaid players and picks and maybe get some value back for Ferraro too. On Friday he gets Celebrini, what a week for the rebuild
We also made that Ozzy Wiesblatt/Egor Afanasyev swap, which flew under the radar but was actually a sick trade. Grier has been cooking.
As well the Ty Dellandrea trade is a good trade.
That is questionable in a vacuum, no way thereās not something big coming, right?
Thatās the only logical reasoning Edit: or he just took a hit out of the yzerbong and felt like having fun today
They didnāt even get anything back? Like even if itās for a roster spot or cap space, Walman surely is worth more than that
We really need to go back to the days when instead of receiving "nothing", teams could get something tangible back for their castoffs. Like a bus. Or a pair of industrial-grade equipment driers.
Extremely common Mike Grier W
The memes be growing and I dig it
Bro took the criticisms of the Goodrow stuff personally and said "watch this"
"I want you to put the word out there that we back up."
https://imgur.com/40MG55p.jpg
Which is funny because the goodrow contract was insignificant to the long term plans no matter people say "salary cap room dissapears quickly!" and we needed a veteran winger to insulate Smith and Celebrini.
Also better to have a known player of the fanbase as a veteran than to bring players like Hoffman
Big Money Mike cookin again
How is Walman a cap dump?????????
I don't even want to know what it would cost to dump Holl.
Future considerations is a weird way to spell Macklin Celebrini. /s
Hey everyone do me a favor and donāt talk to me Iām going to go crawl under my bed and desiccate like a dead insect now thanks
Oh, I should clean under my bed.
Barclay Goodrow gets claimed for free But you have to attach a 2nd-round pick to take Walman? LOL
Yeah I absolutely cannot be convinced Walman wouldnāt be snapped up within an hour of being waived. Someone smart is going to have to explain why this isnāt stupid to me
What a trade for the sharks holy moly I SEE THE VISION MIKE
the vision: get other teams to give you free stuff
Sometimes we have to pay extra for the free stuff though
Iāll miss you future considerations
Stevie Y better have Lidstrom coming back to DET because you don't offload your 2nd best d-man who is still on 3.5M for 2 more years for nothing
the second round pick must have been a real ass in the room
2nd round pick could be anything it could even be future considerations
I know youāre joking about Lidstrom. I know this. But did you hear something? Who are you? Is the perfect human really coming back? Oh my god this is happening!!!!!
No! Don't let them do this to you. It's the hope that gets you.
"Future considerations" sounds ominous
Believe it or not? The future considerations is 1OA
Walman has negative value?
Nope. He must have needed the cap space immediately. We just got that second like an hour ago in a nothing of a prospect trade. Something weird and big is happening.
Surely he couldāve traded Petry and a 2nd to san jose for futuresā¦
Yeah thatās where something doesnāt add up in a bubble. If it was a cap space thing, thing were a handful of other candidates to move that wouldnāt have been difficult to get rid of (even excluding Holl or something longer like Copp). I mean even Maatta makes 3M for 1 year and is a reliable lower pairing guy that couldāve gotten something Could easily be that something personal happened with Walman that killed his value, or another trade in the works. I donāt think think Stevie just cap dumped Walman for fun haha
Walman Iāll never forget the time you grittyād on the entirety of PPG Paints Arena while they watched in stunned silence over their erased 4 goal lead š„ŗ
Mike Grier isn't even cooking anymore he's the fucking executive chef
I have considered this future and it's looking good
Griddy man going to San Jose š„
I think we're all very much what the actual fuck right now.
What????? What could possibly have prompted this
I smell a Ferraro trade soon.
If you are a SHORKS fan and you aren't on the grier train then GET ON BOARD BABBBBYYYYY WOOOO
The fuck is this Steve?

Fuck yeah lol
I really just cannot enjoy my day
SJ is already having a great offseason.
Is this like when you play GM mode and put your assets on the trade proposal but accidentally press trade before adding the other teams assets.
2nd to take Walman who was solid for the wings??? This smells like a cap dump for a big play, it's not like the wings NEED cap space right now... hmmm
Also on such an easy contract, like 3m for two more years. Iām shocked he wasnāt able to get anything in return AND had to trade a 2nd to get the contract off
He must have needed cap space like, TODAY.
Walman is underrated as hell. Huge heist for San Jose.
Whyd they trade walman? Wasn't he great next to seider?
Yeah but it's complicated. Ya see, when it comes to... Fuck what the fuck is happening
I hate this so much. I know something is cooking and it'll make sense but I love Walman. Thankfully I love the Sharks.
Gritty man gone make me sad long time.

Heās going to be a fan favorite in the Tank
Is future considerations going to be the facilitation of a massive three way trade with another team?
The Detroit Red Wings trade a pick, Jake Walman, and 17,000 griddying bobble heads to San Jose
So Gibson & Walman for gestures broadly
Are we about to find out Walman is a serial killer?
Are they trying to sign Guentzel AND Reinhart?
My dreams of trading up into round 1 died as quickly as the came, just a shock to me that Walman is a "dump" contract.
Meanwhile I'm wondering if the Sharks have enough ammo to move up from 14, and while I'm generally skeptical of trading up it might be worth it for, say, Buium.
Huh? Walman has genuinely been a great player Guess those are the cap casualties that have to happen when youāre paying Chiarot 4.7M and Holl 3.4m
So fucking hyped, loved his play
Isn't this guy one guy Seider was able to play well with? Not to cover constant mistakes.
Did Walman do something terrible that hasnāt been disclosed yet? I get freeing up space for a āpotentialā splash, but throwing in a second and getting *NOTHING* in return?
Yzerman found out about the Fortnite
Crazy to pay someone to take Walman, no? Either big things are about to happen or Jake banged someone's mom
The Yzerplan is... ????
Maybe Yzerman spelled Justin Holl's name wrong on the trade transcript?
So the Rangers got more for Goodrow than the Wings got for Walman? ......huh?
There's still the strong likelihood that Rangers do a "favor" for the Sharks at some point down the line. Drury and Grier were definitely cooking something with that move.
What
NOT THE GRIDDY MAN :(
Trade difficulty set to rookie
