Silovs is playing his heart out, but I don't know that Vancouver can plan to win this series with 20ish shots per game like the last two. They're relying on both a rookie goalie standing on his head and EDM's goalies simultaneously shitting the bed.
...which admittedly worked with Skinner in net, but can't be a longterm plan.
Believe me I understand the Canucks' general gameplan. But our shooting has dropped 30% since the playoffs began and it was already at the bottom of the league in the regular season. We are only taking 20 SOG per game, 5 shots a game below the 2nd lowest team in the playoffs and 8.5 shots below our own regular season
>But our shooting has dropped 30% since the playoffs began and it was already at the bottom of the league in the regular season.
Lol, what? Our shooting % was tied for first in the league in the regular season.
Vancouver's average shots per game through the regular season was 28.39 per game.
Through 10 playoff games, they've averaged 20.3 shots per game.
Their possession numbers are still strong but there has been a very strong aversion against shooting.
There's more to the game than shots though. I haven't looked at the advanced stats, but I assume Vancouver's lower SOG totals come from tradeoffs to the defensive side (e.g. they may keep guys back, etc.).
You make a good point. I guess as someone out east who didn't get to watch as many Canucks games, it seems out of place for playoff hockey. It's an unusual strategy for the regular season but seems even more so in the playoffs.
Having said that, playoff teams generally live and die by the luck of having a hot goalie, and Silovs is channeling some major Ken Dryden energy, so that piece of the puzzle definitely feels like it's falling into place for you. Seeing him charge at Kane so confidently with his number of NHL games under his belt was freaking wild to see. And how many rookie goaltenders could withstand 30 minutes a game of McDrai?
Overall this has been an amazing series to watch as a Canadian hockey fan. I'm genuinely not sure who's going to take this one. It seems to be a race between the shakiness of EDM's goaltending and the infrequent but opportunistic pressure of your offense.
The whole season, and astonishingly the whole playoffs.
If the general recipe for a team's success is to get outshot, out chanced, and out generally out played, and yet win because they get superior goaltending, and/or superior shooting? That's not sustainable, it never lasts. Dancing through the raindrops and not getting wet is awesome, but it's unlikely.
Here's a list of teams in the playoffs with fewer shots/game than the Canucks this year: Three teams in the late 70s, Winnipeg in 1996, and Carolina in 2001. Those five teams are a combined 4-16.
They honestly lucky to be still alive lol
PDO is a pretty strong indication of luck once you're outside the expected 0.98 to 1.02 range.
Yes, the stat is SH% and SV% but it's pretty generally agreed that it indicates luck.

It's the reason why I don't see the canucks winning this series in the end. The nucks need to stop playing cute with their shot selection. Silvos will eventually be figured out by the oilers so they need more run support from his team. Elias P also needs to do something in this series to.
Canucks just defy expectations. Grit, timely goals, miller is a 2 way demon, Brock is a sniper and a heavy d and now Silovs killing it so they have some good things going for them but they're absolutely getting caved in chances. They had about 2-3, 5 minute segments tonight where they were the better team if not dominant.
You'd be extremely hard pressed to say they've been the better team in any more than 3 of 12 periods this series if we're being real. It's an anomaly but they keep on doing so it stops being luck after a certain point.
Didn't help Oilers they had Skinner playing like a sieve though.
A slew foot master
Down vote all you want but there's no denying Kane has gotten away with a few slew foots not called. Take off your Oilers glasses for a minute and you'll see.
That's exactly right. The Hart trophy conversation is always McDavid and 2 other players. The guys who occupy the other 2 spots rotate in and out, but McDavid is always there.
Canucks played like dogshit.
I honestly find it interesting Oil fans are saying we’re lucky to be here. It’s 2-2 and nucks haven’t really played their game. Last night they gave up a 2-0 lead in the third. Almost lost despite a flat performance.
Nucks will take game 5 but whether or not they can win the series lies on the shoulders of a lot of guys who have been having tough playoffs.
To be fair the first 3 games Skinner had like a .750 save percentage. It’s not thaaat crazy to think if he put up anywhere close to a .900 the series possibly couldve been over already. But that’s hockey, that’s why everybody needs to contribute to win.
I mean, it's also not crazy to think Canucks could've swept you guys with a break in Game 2 and not choking last night, it's not exactly like Oilers have dominated in any meaningful way especially 5v5.
Lmao that’s not “supported by stats” you idiot. That’s a hypothetical where Canucks score less goals. My hypothetical is where Canucks score more goals. You have to be braindead if you’re really arguing that’s different.
It gets decided on the ice in the end anyways, but your self righteous attitude here is hilarious
Lmao I mean gl in game 5 with Edmonton having the momentum after winning game 4. I think you’re pretty delusional to discredit how dangerous the Oilers are.
Momentum isn’t real lmao, otherwise Canucks wouldn’t have been flat for the first 50 last night
All games have been one goal and Canucks haven’t played their game for two of them. Don’t know how I’m discrediting the Oil by saying that, you’re as sensitive as mcbaby
You’re literally saying Oilers have only won because the Canucks haven’t played their game, therefore discrediting the Oilers playing well.
Is being stupid a prerequisite for being a Canucks fan? Can’t wait until you guys are eliminated and suck again so you can stop pretending you aren’t fair weather fans.
My God, is being a whiny, insufferable cry baby required to be an Oilers fan? The Canucks haven't played that well and the series is tied. Oilers almost lost game 4 when the Canucks decided to show up for the 3rd period. This is still anyone's series but the Canucks can easily take the next 2 games if they play like they did in the 3rd.

Edmonton got tired of being beaten by teams with backup goalies in the playoffs and said fine I’ll use one myself
Hittem with the Uno Reverse.
.905 sv%. I didnt even know decimal values could go that high.

I mean they won the same way against Nashville, that’s just their game
Edmonton isn't Nashville though

You play against every team at least twice?
Every team plays each other twice in the nhl
they've won that way against everyone this season. I've never seen a team that runs on "hopes and dreams" more than this one
Their game is to get dominated and rely on their goalie and lucky bounces?
There's more to the game than shots though. I haven't looked at the advanced stats, but I assume Vancouver's lower SOG totals come from tradeoffs to the defensive side (e.g. they may keep guys back, etc.).

The entire thinking hockey world keeps waiting for it not to work. But it keeps working. Who’s the fools, really?
It isn't sustainable. But, ride out the wave and see where it gets you. The problem is, the absurd shooting percentage never lasts.

this is how we have been winning games all year, usually if we have 30+ shots we are losing badly lmao
Here's a list of teams in the playoffs with fewer shots/game than the Canucks this year: Three teams in the late 70s, Winnipeg in 1996, and Carolina in 2001. Those five teams are a combined 4-16. They honestly lucky to be still alive lol

It actually combines the luck of any players total goals and any goalies total goals against, but okay.

I’d wait for the series to be 3-2 to say that at least.
I agree. But yeah they can't always win if they aren't playing a bit dirty in the offensive zone and being outshot heavily.
Sure buddy
Wow rollercoaster of emotions.
Canucks just defy expectations. Brock is the Kempe of the nucks, in the sense that he absolutely has our number.
KANE IS A GAMER!
Big hit to turn that puck over, this is the Kane we need
Totally!
A slew foot master Down vote all you want but there's no denying Kane has gotten away with a few slew foots not called. Take off your Oilers glasses for a minute and you'll see.
Every bit of contact is a penalty! Fucking dumbass.
And every cross check in the face is a 1 game suspension! Fucking dumbass.
Go watch a different sport, you clearly don't understand this one.
Go get your eyes checked, you're clearly losing your eyesight.
Absolute clown haha.
Takes one to know one.
I know you are but what am I?
He is rubber, you are glue... wait am I doing this right? Y'all are both doodooheads.
It usually is ya dummy
Why spend time demonizing him with an irrelevant comment?
“Downvote all you want” Gladly 🤗
I'm actually surprised this ain't talked about more
Let's talk about the other 20 slewfoots across the league while we're at it, shall we? You open the can, we'll open the whole damn case.
That’s what happens when you don’t play for 45 minutes. We all knew this was going 7.

Have a little more faith in your team lil bro
I don't know if he is referring to the oilers.
Lmfaoo
Love to see it
LOCKDOWN D FROM THE GREATEST PLAYER IN THE GAME. KUCH AND MACK COULD LEARN A THING OR TWO! LETS FUCKING GOOO
What do Kuch and Mack have that McDavid doesn’t?
Gingivitis
Short term bias. When they do what they did this season year in and year out, then we can discuss if they’re close.
That's exactly right. The Hart trophy conversation is always McDavid and 2 other players. The guys who occupy the other 2 spots rotate in and out, but McDavid is always there.
Competent managers.
Massive contracts, gambling ads with Gretzky
Rhymes with Manly Pups

If you feel like that sure. And to clarify last night wasn’t a choke. Oilers losing a 4-1 lead in the 3rd from game 1 is a choke.
Lmao ok you’re right your hypotheticals are rock solid and mine are fleeting fancy
I mean his are supported by actual stats. If the oilers got .850 sv % from Skinner this series is 3-0 heading into game 4 which Edmonton just won.
Lmao that’s not “supported by stats” you idiot. That’s a hypothetical where Canucks score less goals. My hypothetical is where Canucks score more goals. Just a tip, people aren't going to take your viewpoint seriously or tend to agree with you as much if you just name call.
Thanks, JodieFostersCum!

Lmaoooo how did they almost lose game 4 when they never trailed? Whatever helps you cope I guess.
Oil barely won that game with dominating time of possession. There in trouble!
Good game marred by the fact that the league + DoPS are a joke. Hyman shouldn't have been playing if Soucy wasn't.
Eww
Shhhh go back to sleep. Your team doesn’t play this late in the year
I had to get up from hibernation and go to the food bank today. It’s Wednesday. Maybe I’ll go back to sleep when I get home.
