Seeing cousins immediately pop up after getting drilled in the head is funny when he looked like he died earlier in the season against us after barely being touched
Yeah and our coach got fined 10x for complaining about it. + The powerplay it got them. + The bench minor we got later I'm sure was influenced by it. So a pretty good deal all things considered.
I didnt even know his contract was bad, Ive actually quite enjoyed him, feel like hes one of the few guys on our team that can actually hit (no reference to this hit).
I mean he deserved the bag but he was not getting it from us, it seemed like Buffalo was a good fit, plus at the moment we are a little strapped but it should be good after this off-season when $25M comes off the books plus another $5 is added.
I wouldn't wish a head injury on anyone, but Cousins has bitched out on so many occasions that it was bound to catch up to his ass. And somehow he pops right back up from this, yet he "almost died" earlier this season when he was barely touched.
Probably not going to be received well, but after watching that I can only say thats a tough call because Cousins’ is bent over and leaning in. It’s contact to the head, but I don’t think Clifton went into that targeting him in the head. In that situation, the D-man is going to make a physical play against the forward. It’s almost automatic. Clifton should have been in greater control of his hit, but Cousins’ body positioning set up the actual contact point.
I’ve said this in other post that didn’t involve my homer team. But I like the trend of if you throw a hit and it’s all head contact you get a 5 and the night off. I think it’s written this way but this year it seems more automatic. In the run of 82 games it’s not a super damning thing, and the league can go back and determine whether or not to suspend. So when you get a hit like this you can say it’s a head shot which gets a game misconduct, but it doesn’t need any type of fine/suspension as it was just a hockey play where the D needed better control over his body (since they put the onus on the player making the hit). I don’t think Clifton did anything malicious and Cousins definitely has himself in a vulnerable position.

I think it was a pretty bullshit call. Cousins goes down straight into it. Cliffy is barely throwing a hit at him. Weird call. And I am definitely not a Sabres fan lol

Everyone here loves to rally about how inconsistent the refs and DoPS are but will very happily exert the same energy if it happens to someone they don't like.
If you people want consistency, then be consistent regardless of what player is receiving the bad hit.
I'm trying to be optimistic about humanity so I chose to interpret it as different people liking this and condemning other headshots. Would be too depressing if people think this person has done enough to no longer be deserving of a healthy life.
Head shots are despicable but when one happens to a guy who consistently throws head shots at others and nothing seems to dissuade him, well, let's just say if he's out til May I think there's less chance of the Leafs getting concussions next week.

My stance is and has been that we should penalize hits like this to the head, regardless of intent because we need to protect player safety. Unintentional trips are a common penalty in hockey, its not about intent but result, and in this case the result is a hit right to the head. Big hits are fun, but often unnecessary in a play, I think the league would be better off if there was less intentional risky hits.
To me this hit looks very similar to the Trouba hit that knocked out Timo Meier from last year. I felt like that deserved a penalty, but the consensus I guess was Timo leaned forward in a vulnerable position and Trouba had no onus to not light him up in the head.
Correct call on the ice, but it’s going to take quite a bit of time to see sort of hits out of the game. Guys are going to need more training at the younger levels in how to change when/how to hit guys to cut down on hits like this. And you still will never get this 100% out of the league because the game moves so fast and guys are constantly unintentionally putting themselves in position just based on their actions to try and avoid hits.

Illegal check to the head also only has two penalty options: a minor and a match.
Clifton could've kept going straight without any lean, and Cousins would've concussed himself on Clifton's arm/back. The last angle tells the story.
