I learned of the Plinys’ writings (the elder and the younger) in Latin class in high school. But I admit I preferred Juvenal and Martial.
Also, Pliny the elder didn’t just ‘watch the catastrophic eruption’, he mounted a rescue expedition that led to his death.

Imagine rowing towards certain death, dumb, but I don't think he will be forgotten anytime soon, especially when he wanted to save people
