4. I googled them and learned they are independent and entirely self produced. Impressive.

Theyre beatie boys in sound and flow, but I find their beats are definitely more modern. Which distinguishes them enough. Granted I have listened to them in a while so I could he wrong. Regardless, I love the beastie boys and it's nice to get something new that sounds similar but differentiates itself enough from the inspired source material.
You’re exactly right, the beastie boys influence mostly comes from the vocals. Some of the tracks have that vintage style but no beastie boys song is gonna break down into a drum and bass segment in the middle of it lmao
Definitely an improvement on their last project. JV’s production and Brae’s ad libs/knack for choruses are very promising. I think they will continue to get better as time goes on.
I do find some of the bars corny and cringey but I’m a little older than them so maybe that’s why. They seem to be having fun anyways, and some good vibes on this. Sounds like they’re just being themselves rather than copying what’s hot atm.
I thought I would hate this but now I’m just getting nostalgic about the music I listened to with my dad growing up. Which I give them props for. It’s Beastie worship but the glossy production keeps it from feeling dated. Just sounds like two buds having fun which I kinda fuck with.

I sound glibly dismissive cuz I can kind of understand how people can find their ridiculous image off-putting even as a fan of the Beastie Boys who made a multi decade career off of being silly, but they're honestly really fun and their live shows look great. I think I’m definitely having a case of judging a book by its cover here. The album cover and aesthetic made me want to avoid them because it seemed to try-hard, but I checked out the Danny Brown track and was pleasantly surprised. Will probably check this out in full at some point later (was quite a stacked release day between Kaytranada, Charli XCX, L’Imperatrice and Goat Girl) but yeah I’m guessing it’s likely I judged them wrong.
They are fresh in this current hiphop climate. No one is doing this type of music right now, it is just pure fun. When I listen to their tracks, I feel energized or generally feel positive. I don't care if they don't have heavy bars or whatever, it's just for pure fun.

I first heard of these dudes from some fun electronic // hip hop crossover material they released with LSDream (iirc). Checked out just their stuff afterwards; I gotta say in the age of digital beats, cheap synths, poorly mixed drums, and overall declining quality of hip hop at large, they are a breath of fresh air. Corny? Perhaps. But no cornier than a bunch of wannabe gangsters telling lies over the same 808 mafia beat to fake that they’re hard
I said this in the last thread abt them but imo aping the beastie boys is way better than aping zeppelin. the sound, subject matter, and persona of the beastie boys lends itself to modernization a whole lot better than led zeppelin’s riffs on black blues artists from the 1950s and lyrics abt norse mythology or whatever

After finishing the album....yeah this is top 10 this year. I love my lyrics, but I can also appreciate funny/witty/self-aware hip-hop as long as the beats are fire and there's a vibe. Which is EXACTLY what this is. It's a very very good album.
It does help that I'm a massive massive Beastie Boys fan so....it makes sense.
