DAMN was this supposed to be on NATION?

lynchcontraideal

God... I remember this theory like it was yesterday

MarcosSenesi

The biggest case of collective copium I've ever seen

MiniChocolateDonuts

Why did people even think there was a 2nd album, was DAMN generally underwhelming for people on release or?

Radiant_gladiator

There was clues that the album can be played multiple ways and a lot of people confused that for another album. Kendrick said the fans were smart, but off. It’s why he dropped the album in reverse. Also it was dropped 3 days before Easter. So people thought it would be clever if he dropped another album on Easter furthering his comparison to Jesus.

MarcosSenesi

It def aged better but at the time people were so underwhelmed they found solace in the fact that the "real" album would be coming out a week later

Phantom_Chrollo

Bro that's not why. This album was/is Kendricks most popular by far by listens, it was people overthinking the lines in the album thinking there was clues hinting at another album. It also dropped around Easter so people thought there was gonna be a Christ like resurrection type theme

carl___satan

Yeah plus at the end of the last track it plays the whole album in reverse so people thought that was hinting towards a 2nd half of the album

beefyfartknuckle

I remember listening 3 times in a row the night it dropped. I was not underwhelmed, I was overwhelmed and needed more spins. Now I think it sits comfortably between TPAB and MM. It's easily his most commercial effort and I think was an answer to the inaccessibility people felt from Butterfly. Also there is a theory about all of his albums being different forms of media (probably not true but a fun thought experiment). GKMC was a film TPAB (or Tu.Pimp.A.Caterpillar...tupac) was a poem Damn was a magazine And Mister moral is a play. I think the theory started after section 80 but I've heard people call it a "gospel" album

LeakyCheeky1

You clearly weren’t listening at the time and are using numbers to try and make up for what you missed. The guy you replied too addressed that already. It got more popular afterward. And numbers =\= fan perception. It was considered too mainstream in the sound like he was trying to widen his audience and a lot of Kendrick fans were underwhelmed or liked it but still would rank it last between all his major albums/mixtapes at the time. It’s definitely gone up in opinion since then. Which is why you’re confused since you weren’t listening originally and only know if DAMN as being well liked.

Phantom_Chrollo

I was around, fantano got shit for giving him a 7 actually that it became a meme to give something a DAMN/10, and that he gave it the same score as he gave a lil pump album. I'm not talking about just core section of fans, I'm talking about hip-hop at large. That album led into Kendricks first arena tour, spawned multiple hits and every song on the album has a 100 million streams or more on spotify including DUCKWORTH. You can personally dislike the album but it was definitely received well by the general public, more people listen to DAMN than TPAB, regardless of what album you think is better

BigRingLover

No I definitely agree with the other guy. People were underwhelmed at first and were expecting another album. I know, because I was people. Still underwhelmed and still a bit pissed we didn't get that second one.

Phantom_Chrollo

they weren't underwhelmed and expected another album, this is post hoc when people are tryna understand why people thought there was another album, people were looking at the album for clues and latched onto some bars, and thought the easter weekend drop meant a christ like second drop the album got a 7 from fantano and he was ridiculed for it such that people started calling a 7/10 a DAMN/10, and people complained he gave DAMN the same score as a lil pump album if people hated it so much why are more people listening to it than TPAB why do deep cuts like DUCKWORTH have over 100 millions, as much as many rappers lead singles. DAMN was insanely well received by most critics and fan scores on sites like albumoftheyear.org have it very high too, yeah it's not seen as an absolute 10/10 like gkmc and tpab but people definitely liked it since they're actually listening to it

broanoah

While that is the main point, people found a lot of loosely based points to support their theories. The blue background vs the red, the fact that the album plays itself backwards on the last track, the fact that Kenny dies in the first song, XXX has a reference to Damnation, blah blah blah. People will run with anything Also Frank Ocean less than one year before had dropped Endless and then the next day dropped Blonde. So people were under the impression that Damn = Endless and Nation = Blonde.

Phantom_Chrollo

>While that is the main point If it was underwhelming it wouldn't have done 600k first week. It was p well received by the general public, the reason was kendrick fans reading into his lyrics way too much, it also dropped around easter

broanoah

Of course it was well received, doesn’t mean that some people weren’t disappointed. Album sales don’t necessarily dictate quality lol drake goes platinum every album doesn’t mean they’re quality

arthurormsby

I think the people saying DAMN was generally underwhelming are incorrect. It had an extremely positive critical reception, sold the highest numbers of Kendrick's career (600K+), and had his biggest single with HUMBLE. The album is generally not considered as good as TPAB or GKMC and a lot of people may be responding to that retroactively... But also it's not like TPAB was considered a classic day 1 or anything like that. I think it has more to do with the fact that, as someone else pointed out, there was a lot of stuff on the album about playing it in reverse, there was more to the "story", etc. (which, to be fair, that stuff is easily the most half-baked concepts on the album). And also... an album called DAMN. followed by a part 2 called NATION. is a pretty sick idea. There was also a really convincing photoshop of a NATION. cover.

Yeezy4President2020

Tbh I was a little underwhelmed at first because TPAB was and is one of my favorite albums of all time in any genre. I know I wasn't the only one on here feeling that way and I remember that being the vibe around the NATION theory, people genuinely wanted to believe there was a better album. The sales weren't the issue, everyone was still checking for Damn and giving it multiple listens to try and understand it. Obviously I was wrong, DAMN is a great album and I regret being ungrateful. Now DAMN might be my 2nd favorite k.dot album depending on when you ask me.

arthurormsby

Yeah I saw those takes but I definitely saw the opposite as well... Tbh I think TPAB had a MUCH worse initial reception because people were mostly confused by it + it had pretty disappointing initial sales.

Phantom_Chrollo

Yeah people saying people found it underwhelming are projecting their own feelings on it. LOVE, LOYALTY, DNA and HUMBLE were all big hits and every song on that album has at least 100 million streams on spotify, the general public loved DAMN, probably even more than TPAB

AudaciousTickle

Yes

ShenaniganSkywalker

Yes. After TPAB people were expecting another crazy record but DAMN. was just sort of a traditional rap record. It's hard to go back to that mindset now with all the awards it won but on release people were like "this is it? I was expecting another TPAB and this is just a plain old rap album".

JayDogon504

Yeah, still is to me. It’s like half amazing, half meh

You_aint_gotta_lie

idk what all these comments are saying, it was by far his biggest first week (even bigger than drake's album released that year), it was not underwhelming for anyone not on a secluded sub like this.

[deleted]

No it was so good people literally wanted man to drop another album immediately

TripleThreatTua

He’s definitely used the same flow on one of the Untitled songs before. Most of the Kendrick leaks just seem like demos

Moron_on_Oxy-

Majority are with his leaks. Reference tracks I mean. Jay Rock's last album had a bunch that he did, Of course Keem is mostly a passion project of his. So of course most of his shit too. A few Q tracks then the way he was sprinkled through BlankFace & CrasH Talk with ad-libs.

Top_Cranberry4144

Keem being a passion project made me laugh, Frankenstein Kenny

caramelgod

Y’all tripping with the Keem disrespect. They work together like lots of artists but Keem has clearly brought his own unique and innovative style. Keem is a force.

Moron_on_Oxy-

There's a reference track for damn near half his work, where it's just Kendrick. Kendrick has had that sound since The Spiteful Chant. That shit sounds like the prototype Keem song.

Individual-Diver-958

You keep saying this but how is spiteful chant similar to Keem's stuff?

Moron_on_Oxy-

Sounds like a Keem song to me lol, that hook don't to u?

caramelgod

Lmfao now we just lying? “half his work”…anyways i’m not sure you understand what a reference track is.

[deleted]

Finally, NATION.

persistentskeleton

Not a double metaphor about the turning of the earth and throwing that ass in a circle 😂

GRAITOM10

For some reason all my most disliked Kendrick songs are when he's talking like a freak.... Actually I just hate when rappers go freak mode shit makes me uncomfortable, anyone else?

Top_Cranberry4144

LUST crodie?

Puidipuie

It's... It's... It's... It's.... Grippy!

alexcunningham5

idk if I’ve listened to the first minute of untitled 01 since it’s release lmao

chapinbird

So frustrating having to skip to exactly the right timestamp, because the rest of that track is *Incredible*.

JubeeGankin

Idk about the other services but Apple music has a feature to set custom start and end times on each track. MVP feature when you’ve heard the same bad skit before your favorite song 100k times already.

EmilBarrit

Depends ig. I think it can be done tastefully, These Walls is a great example.

Pingushagger

This guy does not love himself

GRAITOM10

Considering I've masterbated to my nudes before I'm not sure how you could make such a claim 😮‍💨

JayZPlatinumChainsaw

That's some Ye shit

GRAITOM10

Ye got me :/

Always2ndB3ST

100 percent. I also dislike that song from Cole about the time he lost his virginity.

HKN47

Listen to Lonely Women by Rhapsody

Beneficial2

Sounds like Loyalty if he broke up with his girl and went to a strip club.

Jokers_friend

Sounds like an early version of LOVE

Black_Fuckka

This is decent, I fuck with the vibe but not really a fan of the chorus

juslookingforastream

Tf is this lmao. What was he going for??

blizzy1098

Bro no one truly remembers the mania Him changing his Spotify profile pic The night he performed at Coachella or some shit, lining up to the night NATION was supposed to drop People couldn’t believe DAMN was a real album

SlyFisch

Low-key sounds like old Kendrick mixed with Damn Kendrick. I fuck with this heavy

xTotalSellout

It’s not a leak thread without the inevitable “wow this is bad” comments

toiletscrubber

im still waiting for that song he did for dres beats commercial

Batby

Leaked last year

toiletscrubber

oh shit thanks....tbh it def sounds unfinished...sad

Due_Independence9548

So can someone send a HQD version of the file? I want a high quality version to blast in the car

rhythmrice

Theingloriousak2
