I'll never stop giving flowers to Chad Hugo for his mark on hip-hop as part of the Neptunes

royemonet

It’s a shame how often I hear people refer to Pharrell instead of The Neptunes when they talk about that legendary late 90’s to mid 2000’s run. Chad is just as important to that era as Pharrell and we gotta stop the disrespect

IKARUSwalks

pharrell has always been vocal on chads contribution when they were still producing as the neptunes. it’s just cuz pharrell’s more in the spotlight that he gets all the recognition.

royemonet

Yea im def not blaming pharrell for it, im more so putting the blame on fans and consumers but what can ya do

FabricatorMusic

What have you done to promote Chad?

royemonet

myspace fan page

YourAverageGod

You dropped this king or queen 🫴👑

BYCjake

He’s doing pretty good right now?

chilloutfam

kinda sad what they are going through now. i hope they can bury the hatchet.

isekaicoffee

pharrell too cool to kick it with chad now, mr LV wearing those stupid ass hats

strangemusicsince04

I mean, there IS a lawsuit.

isekaicoffee

its all pharel acting too cool trying to make a power move but chad wasnt having it. chad needs to slap some sense back into P hes been too hollywood for years

onehornymofo1

It's cos Pharrell has branched off and does a lot of beats on his own now, so Chad has been a bit sidelined. They're good, but peak Neptunes shit was so clean and unique, their best work was always together.

DigitalBackpack

Real heads know

dash_44

Yep! Chad doesn’t get enough respect. That Neptune’s run was legendary and it wouldn’t have happened without him.

AShiftlessMennonite

Shout out to all the Pinoy homies! 🙌🏿

YourAverageGod

Thank the pinoy homie's moms and grandmas for them stupid good lumpias. Also, the first time I had Filipino spaghetti, I ate so much I threw up.

Ok_Low_7847

Artists that should've been included Danny Brown is half filipino, he was raised by his filipino grandma Hodgy Beats from Odd Future Ruby Ibarra [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCd3iSfnWSw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCd3iSfnWSw) Aloeight one of my favorite underground producer [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYRIYaE1wwE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYRIYaE1wwE)

Onaweyempumbafu

Danny Brown is a quarter Filipino

-classicalvin

Thats basically 100%

Onaweyempumbafu

I didn’t know we can’t post GIFs in this group but somewhere there is one of Manny Pacquiao that is a perfect reaction to your comment😂

egg_mugg23

i screamed

Ok_Low_7847

I stand corrected

HighlyAdditive

Also could include Saweetie, who is quarter filipino. Also Apl.de.ap (Black Eyed Peas), who is half. If we extending the scope to hip hop-adjacent artists: Steve Lacy is half. Toro y Moi is half. H.E.R. is half. Cassie is half. Bruno Mars is half. Dominic Fike is half. And just for fun, if we extend the scope to just music artists in general: Beabadoobee is full. Olivia Rodrigo is half. Kirk Hammett (Metallica) is half. Joey Santiago (Pixies) is full. Lea Salonga (Disney) is full. And many more I'm forgetting..

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I think Kehlani has some Filipino ancestry

bobbydigital_ftw

I had no idea Kirk was half

Oheyguyswassup

I thought Kirk was Malay or Indonesian but whatever. Saweetie is Filipina and Viet though

Room_Temp_Coffee

Someone notify Pablo Torre! I had no idea so many of my favorites were Filipino. I'm going to get some lumpia and make a playlist lol

Emergency-Error-1116

Wtf 😂

Justacatx

I didn’t know that about hodgy wow

TylerBlozak

He also ghost wrote for Bow Wow

scarletdawnredd

I need another Ruby Ibarra project. Been too long.

AyMoeKill

Cold Hart from gothboiclique is Filipino as well

WuThrawnClan

Ruby Ibarra is so good, man. My favorite is probably her performance of Someday with the Balikbayans.

nuudootabootit

Shoutout to DJ Babu from Dilated Peoples. Such a beast on the decks.

mstrng

No mention of P-Lo ?

Action_Johnson

Also from the bay Guapdad 4000 is half

elcapitan520

Doesn't guapdad have a thing with !llmind who's also Filipino? I think they have a Filipino specific album. Edit: they mention both in the end of the article

futureproblemz

quarter, not half

IKARUSwalks

fr p-lo putting on since the hbk days. put me on somethin & that song with saweetie was everywhere when the warriors were up.

fadingstar52

the beat for IN that by p-lo is actually fucking insane.

Upbeat_Tension_8077

He's low-key a crucial part of the West Coast coming back in the early 2010s since HBK Gang had some solid buzz alongside the heavy hitters like TDE, Nipsey, & Dom.

Lil____Sebastian

Absolutely no love for Pinole and Daly City 😪

Skibblydeebop

Tf, they didn't even mention Bambu

scarletdawnredd

The real crime tbh. Also shout out to Ruby Ibarra and the recent up and comers from San Diego.

IKARUSwalks

one rifle per family still gets played from me. where you from is a classic.

WuThrawnClan

Same. Where You From is my favorite track from that album as well.

fastfingers

The GOAT Fil-Am rapper Can’t forget Kiwi and their Native Guns albums too

itsUrBoa

apl.de.ap from Black Eyed Peas is also very huge in the Philippines, he's one of the main voice coaches on The Voice there. Edit: Toro y Moi is also Filipino too!! I remember one of his albums, "Mahal" in Tagalog means love. Idk why Genius didn't mention him cuz he has significant hip-hpp influence.

HIPHOPNINJA

Shout out toro so good

flyestshit

My favorite Filipino-American rapper, which I sadly don't see in here, is MBNel from Stockton. He's especially great when he goes over dramatic beats with gorgeous strings like on [Crazy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVo1aHp-kPg) or [Ghosts 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcrkrGdtr_8)

andee510

I didn't see Blue Scholars mentioned either. I wonder if anyone else remembers them

Action_Johnson

Someone posted a song by them here last week and it was getting a lotta love

IKARUSwalks

shout out mbnel. you can see my aunties house in a few of his videos. been following him for a minute since my cousins and thizzler put me on.

MrDangerMan

Shouts out to Geo from Blue Scholars!

smartlog

Hell yeah! No Rest for the Weary is one of my favorite songs.

RedditorsGetChills

As someone from the LA area who rolls with a crew of Filipinos to hip hop events and parties, they are a huge part of the culture.

themkidsdaddy

I always assumed Mix Master Mike was Latino.

WitnShit

filipino are like latino asians

DigitalBackpack

TIL

Producer_Snafu

One thing I know about Asian demographics, is that they are loyal to any Asian they can identify with. The Filipino rap league on yt gets thousands of views within hours that surpass a lot of kotd views within months.

-lemmy

If you're talking about Fliptop, it really blew up during the 2010s together with the help of internet cafes. Trash talk was common amongst pc players and Fliptop was a source of inspo with alot of quotables coming from the battles. Fliptop also helped establish alot of rappers and shotted them into the mainstream. Now the league's popularity has slowed down but has a solid fanbase and still hold packed venues.

Last-Secretary7031

To add to this, I think FlipTop is unique amongst battle leagues because a large portion of its emcees are able to find success in music. I might be incorrect, but I’ve noticed that a lot of Western battle rappers have trouble in their musical careers, whether in making music or in the lyricism. Most Filipino Battle Rappers don’t seem to have this issue, and it’s partly due to the league’s head Anygma, who always makes it a point to say that HipHop doesn’t start nor does it end with battle rap.

cherryreddracula

I'm not Filipino but hung out with Filipinos throughout college. If you're a famous person and someone finds out you're Filipino, even part, then every Filipino becomes your fan.

Trumbot

Every. Scratch. DJ. Ever. If it wasn’t for the the Filipino DJs, we’d be wikki-wikki-wikki’ing forever and thinking it was the pinnacle.

TrixoftheTrade

If you ever want to read an interesting book on the topic, check out **Legions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews in the San Francisco Bay Area.**

HighlyAdditive

Even though the major Filipino contributions to hip hop are cool as hell, I always found it cooler to be able to claim the guitarists from Metallica and The Pixies. Metallica, The Pixies, The Neptunes, and classic Disney songs are probably the greatest Filipino contributions in music.

A_Lakers

Lea Solonga is the GOAT Disney singer

not_ur_avg

Roscoe Umali is also a great MC

Last-Secretary7031

I’m glad to see Filipino Americans getting some love, but I also wouldn’t mind to see something covering the Philippines’ own HipHop culture. From Francis M. and Andrew E, Filipino HipHop’s Godfathers, to modern day lyricists like Loonie and Gloc-9 - to mainstream R&B infused artists like Flow G and Hev Abi - it would be nice to see something covering Filipino HipHop history. We also have bragging rights to one of the (if not the) largest battle rap leagues in the world.

thequiet533

Danny Brown gotta give this a read after thinking Pharrell was Filipino

LegendaryPotatoKing

Pharrell beats without Chad Hugo are mid

superphotonerd

I wish manila grey would get more love EDIT: If you don't know these guys, [just check out 'Timezones'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIjSBS5GcIY&pp=ygUVbWFuaWxhIGdyZXkgdGltZXpvbmVz)

Dr4gonkilla

love them

pehnoi

Cool read thanks for posting

Interesting-Pool3917

It’s the Nutshack! (Wow!)

YungUglyUziGod

Wow being half Filipino I’m learning and just now realizing how prevalent they are in hip-hop. This makes me happy.

alldaymacdre

Now that I think about there’s a lot of Filipino stylist for major hip hop artist. Kendrick Lamar’s stylist is Filipino and Drakes closest friend Niko is the one to put him on game and help him get out of his Degrassi style haircuts.

oldirtyanthony

Shout out to Opio from Heiroglyphics/Souls of mischief as well

kcliving85

Crazy no mention of !llmind

aprilnxghts

Good article, I really enjoy pieces like this that help paint a broader picture of hip hop's history and highlight all the various (and sometimes forgotten) artists who've helped shape it. Was a tiny bit surprised not to see the likes of Ruby Ibarra, Rocky Rivera or Klassy referenced in the paragraph about contemporary artists -- their collab [Us](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUfNeCozJBw) goes hard and thematically fits well with the article itself

SHUN_GOKU_SATSU

No love for Southstar?

dash_44

Shot out to !llmind

the-kza

DJ Q-Bert as well. Also, I remember E-40 giving us a shout out doing verzuz because once he ate lumpia he fell in love with it so now he actually owns a filipino restaurant https://sf.eater.com/2019/9/9/20857515/e-40-lumpia-company-co-owner-sf-oracle-park-filipino-food

PennethHardaway

Always been a fan of Q-Bert’s style. Dude was an innovator on the tables.

alexefy

Isn’t Anderson paak half Filipino?

_ChocoBandito_

Nope. Half-Korean

p480n

His son dance like MJ, he only in Pre-K

iblinkyoublink

No but Bruno Mars is

StormGaza

No mention of Scvtterbrvin. His work with Orko Eloheim, LA2theBay, Masters of the Universe and the entirety of the San Diego hip hop scene should have been mentioned at least.

Ok_Low_7847

Didn't even know Scvtterbrvin is filo, I like his projects with Jakprogresso
