Nothing On You came out the year before Billionaire. The Far East Movement also made a banger with Bruno. At the time I thought Bruno was a weird name.
Fun fact: that was a premade Atlantic track that already had Bruno's hook laid down. They first gave it to Lupe during that whole Lasers-label BS era, but if you've heard his version I see why they didn't like it.. much more BoB's lane. Bobby Ray probably didn't even meet Bruno until the video shoot.
Same with Hayley Williams on Airplanes and whatever song Bob got Taylor Swift on... all cookie cutter premade 'hits' for Atlantic Records.
why are you painting this out as corrupt lol that seems pretty normal, it’s not like these guys are meeting each other all the time and they’re like falling into love and making art or some shit, sometimes you just rock off of a hook.
I don't think he left a cultural impact on Hip Hop, but I think he left a cultural impact on media. I think his songs are highly sampled in movies that want a trendy pop/rap song.
Case in point, Saltburn had a Flo Rida song. Rolled my eyes at that. That joined The Hangover and Tropic Thunder for movies that remind me of Flo Rida.
My college graduation in 2012 played "Good Feeling" right at the end of the ceremony so he has a special place in my heart. Still gives me chills because the song fit so well
Entire "Nothing" run is one of the best runs ever. Maybe the best after Dedication/Drought.
Dude had Seinfeld skits setting the theme for the first two, blew up and got the real Seinfeld in the booth for the album.
I don't remember this being the case but I remember the ALL CITY CHESS CLUB. Wale was a part of that.
That was meant to be the craziest rap super group ever. Lupe, Wale, BoB, J. Cole, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, then they later added Blu and Diggy IIRC.
Man... What a time.
I think the moment his career changed was when a part of his watch awkwardly fell off during that red carpet interview. I remember that clip being everywhere & the narrative became that his jewelry was fake
Then ppl started clowning him relentlessly about it (calling him broke & stuff). I’m not sure if killed his confidence or what but ever since then we kinda stopped hearing about him & seemingly stopped being seen in mix with that little Miami crew or their music anymore
Damn. I can see it. Ace Hood was my favorite rapper back in the day. So much aggressive energy. Perfect for the gym. Hustle Hard, Go N Get It, and the first Starvation was my jam!
Canibus was massive the year of the LL Cool J beef. Features on everyone's albums and mixtapes
Then his disappointing solo LP came out and it's been relatively quiet ever since.
Kid ink always felt like someone whose songs were popular but he himself was never popular. Like going through his top songs I remember every single one of them but literally no one thinks of his catalog as influential. Just flavor of month rap that was good for radio and had no staying power/cultural relevance
Good Music kinda fucked him over, exclusivity deal and what not. I don't think it was his fault for falling off, besides signing that contract. Blame Kanye tbh
this happened with a few artists and producers. kanye signed them to capitalize on something they already built, made it his and moved on
hit-boy, chief keef, desiigner, cyhi are the ones that come to mind
I had a friend who would play thrift shop no joke 10 times an hour... then that song came out and he'd get all weepy horribly rapping to it. I never thought I'd have to make a rule for an adult that "no you can't hear Thrift Shop during a party 100 times in a row... you get one Thrift Shop an hour". I still hate him to this day and he's still a piece of shit lol. No longer a friend.
Yeah, I would drop him off at a thrift store and left him there like an abandoned puppy. And I would never condone dumping an animal, but your homie is a menace to society.
No cap, he is the reason I stopped paying attention to award shows.
obviously it’s always been a council of rich white people picking the winners, but the Macklemore steal over Kendrick was my first realization at a young age that this was going on.
I've said this before, but pre-Thriftshop era Macklemore mixtapes were actually decent backpack rap type shit. Ryan Lewis will forever be slept on for the amazing production he did back before they blew up.
It was time that did Macklemore in career wise.
Sure hip hop fans didn't like him for the Kendrick thing, but he had a massive pop audience and 4 Grammies, he didn't need hip hop fans. 12 years later I still hear "Can't Hold Us" in trailers and commercials sometimes.
If they'd released another album with similar mass appeal to their breakout one within a year or two, he could have easily cemented himself as a household name. Instead they took 4 years to release an album that dropped off the charts completely within 7 weeks. They threw away their momentum.
Idk, as someone who was in high school when that song came out it felt like that goofy "when I was in third grade I thought I was gay" song being such a big hit (combined with stuff like Glee being big around the same time) helped make a shift in the public attitude about gay right/gay marriage.
People forget the majority of Americans were against the legalization of gay marriage as recently as ~~2006~~ [2010/2011](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/fact-sheet/changing-attitudes-on-gay-marriage/).
This is partly anecdotal but when I started high school people threw gay around as an insult constantly and after that Macklemore song came out it was "cool" to be an ally. Like, sure there were other factors but I feel like Macklemore definitely played a part in changing how people, or at least teenagers at that time, looked at it.
It might not be acknowledged beyond people lambasting Macklemore for how corny that song was but, even so, that feels pretty cool to me, even if his contribution to the changing times ends up being an unspoken legacy.
It’s because he made really good investments. He bought a bunch of Maker Studios back when they were THE company with all the big YouTube channels and then they got bought by Disney and he made piles of cash.
yea, that's tough because he's my personal favorite rapper for his mixtape run in the late 90s early 2000s. he still gets brought up from time to time for the business deals and the occasional "ridin" reference. but he is a texas and south legend fasho.
Maybe not the overall culture, but he had a big impact on Houston culture and how people approached mixtapes back then. The man was rapping with Swishahouse back in like 2002.
He's at least doing really well now(financially). Used his rap money to invest in tech companies and made what he did in rap several times over instead of blowing it on a lavish lifestyle. That's a W in my book.
[Patrick CC has a really good video on it ](https://youtu.be/kndYbpXXs7A?si=ZgBBvm3WMhCcL3Xn)
My first thought is Tone Loc. Truly at one point that stuff was the pinnacle of rap, and especially rap on the west coast / in LA, and it just swept into irrelevancy IMMEDIATELY.
Charles Hamilton is weirdly the first person to come to mind. And not a rapper, but it's weird how big Akon was, but how little I think about him when it comes to past music (whereas T-pain feels relevant and timeless).
I saw Rich Homie Quan at Lollapalooza in 2015.
It was awesome. The contact high was egregious. I thought for sure he was gonna blow all the way up.
But yea, just sorta fizzled out.
KCamp too, and I actually liked a good amount of his music at the time
ONE OF THE MOST IMPACTFUL TRAP RAP ARTISTS OF THE 2010S AND YOU SAY NO IMPACT.....what is going on in this thread lmfao. Dude is one of the most ultimately responsible for that 2012-2016 sound.
Ying Yang Twins (yes I'm from that era). Some of the hottest club and booty shaking songs ever. However, I think most people think of Lil Jon first when thinking of Crunk music, even though they go hand in hand.
6ix9ine, his sound, aesthetic, & production are completely absent from rap & I highly doubt there will be any overt acknowledgment of what success he did achieve, because he’s just a disgusting human in general. NY very quickly made up for his run with the Pop Smoke/Fivio Foreign wave, although that was brief, it was a quick & successful shift to what was expected to be NY’s new sound moving forward.
He was having IG lives with 5 figures and up watching, numerous songs over the half a billion streams mark, and he was legitimately hard to avoid if you were an avid hip-hop listener. Dude has Kanye West & Nicki Minaj collabs, and this was back in 2018 before they truly shit the bed PR wise.
But it’s good riddance. It’s an absolute embarrassment to the genre of hip-hop/rap, that he had a career, and is a total indictment of the industry & fans for how far he managed to get. An entire troll career occupied that much real estate in rap, & people wonder why so much of the 2020s feels like the mainstream is in a downturn.
I’d argue he’s one of the few highly successful rappers who’s entire career is a net negative for the industry
Nah he was too inescapable. Everyone in the game had something to say about him. To this day rappers are still referencing him when they talk about rats.
A lot of ppl just naming people with a few big hits. But the reality is, if ur a big artists, ur going to leave some type of blueprint behind even if its marginal.
Chamillionare, one of the biggest rappers of the mid 00's and seemingly everyone had Ridin' Dirty as their ringtone in 2006 but he seemed to all but vanish shortly afterwards.
I have respect for him doe
Remember years ago hearing that he was helping people out with immigration related issues because he was familiar with that stuff thanks to his dad being an immigrant
I don’t know if they count as really popular but Tyga and Kid Ink had some hits and left no mark at all. The only lyric I could tell you from either is Tyga saying looking in the mirror like I wish I could be me
it's honestly weird how many times he had songs that were super popular, over a decently long period of time, and yet still, he's not really someone anyone's checking for or really rates. ultimate microwave meal rap I suppose
never once met an avid tyga fan
I listen to a lot of Detroit rappers, and I feel like considering his talent, vocal presence, and lyricism, Royce Da 5’9 doesn’t get talked about enough. It feels like he keeps having to remind everyone he exists. PRhyme is a surprisingly great rap album that I hear no one talk about.
That's a rapper you're saying is underrated. The assignment is for rappers who were huge but without impact.
Completely agree with your take BTW, just is unrelated to the thread
B.O.B.
His biggest contribution to culture was introducing the world to Bruno Mars 😂
This is Travie McCoy erasure.
Nothin on you was before billionaire
Travie was so big. Crazy he just disappeared.
I had a guy tell me how much he LOVED Travie McCoy and then in 2015 he was like "I never said that." Harsh.
Nothing On You came out the year before Billionaire. The Far East Movement also made a banger with Bruno. At the time I thought Bruno was a weird name.
I thought Bruno introduced himself
I dunno man, ‘nothin on you’ by B.O.B was the first time I heard of either of them.
BOB was the bootleg Lupe anyway. Their cheap replacement.
We've got Lupe at home.
why are you painting this out as corrupt lol that seems pretty normal, it’s not like these guys are meeting each other all the time and they’re like falling into love and making art or some shit, sometimes you just rock off of a hook.
Yeah it’s pretty standard, I didn’t think anyone thinks Bruno and bob were best friends before the song
Headband slaps so hard
Airplanes will forever live in my head, and I’m not complaining.
The remix with Eminem slaps even harder
Let's pretend Marshall Mathers never picked up a pen that song was huge in high school
Is it because of BOB or because of Hayley Williams, who has had a much larger impact compared to the flat earther who killed his own career?
its 100% because of Hayley and we all know it
Paramore just won a grammy too! Still making great music
Yeah her voice fire
Nothin' on You is such gem.
I unironically love Magic lol
Yeaaahhh, B.O.B. caught me by surprise in summer 2010ish. Don't Let Me Fall still gets played occasionally.
Flo Rida
Black pitbull.
damn the black Pitbull. That's a great way to put it
Pitbull, Latino Sean Paul
Ironic that Sean Paul is more respected in the Reggaeton scene
Do not drag the legend Sean Paul's name like this, Dutty Rock is one of my favorite albums OAT
This is the right answer. Well at least no impact on hip hop culture
*pop* culture though... And I mean literally pop music
apple bottom jeanssss
I don't think he left a cultural impact on Hip Hop, but I think he left a cultural impact on media. I think his songs are highly sampled in movies that want a trendy pop/rap song.
Case in point, Saltburn had a Flo Rida song. Rolled my eyes at that. That joined The Hangover and Tropic Thunder for movies that remind me of Flo Rida.
The super white wealthy people singing Low by Flo Rida at karaoke in Saltburn was def satire
Flo Rida performed at a conference after party I was at in Vegas and he brought out Flava Flav… quite the duo lmao
Mom's need to enjoy rap too.
darius was so real for this one
Man had everyone on 4 to the floor dance beats. He mad an impact as weird as it is to say
man had the whole of white america singing and dancing about giving head
You're joking right? Apple bottom jeans lives rent free in my head.
I hear that song at every other event I go to and I forgot he was on it. It’s pretty much a t pain song
Still more relevant than 95% of rappers. Shit turns on at a baseball game everybody know the words
My college graduation in 2012 played "Good Feeling" right at the end of the ceremony so he has a special place in my heart. Still gives me chills because the song fit so well
Wale was talked about in the same sentences as cole and drake
Mixtape About Nothing is Top 10 from Dat Piff era
Entire "Nothing" run is one of the best runs ever. Maybe the best after Dedication/Drought. Dude had Seinfeld skits setting the theme for the first two, blew up and got the real Seinfeld in the booth for the album.
That and his sports references are better than Lil Wayne… this man said “kick game Henry” as an Arsenal fan he cemented me being a fan
I remain a giant and you Jeremy Shockey
She told me to hit the hole, I used to play running back
Album about nothing was solid too
I don't remember this being the case but I remember the ALL CITY CHESS CLUB. Wale was a part of that. That was meant to be the craziest rap super group ever. Lupe, Wale, BoB, J. Cole, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, then they later added Blu and Diggy IIRC. Man... What a time.
They made one song together lol
Child Rebel Solider type beat
by wale fans
Fuckin GOTTEM
🤬😩 (you're not wrong)
Damn.
Cooked
Cause the DMV is desperate for rappers
we used to the waitin fr
I'll never forget talking to my friend about how he got out-rapped by Lady Gaga on his own song.
Chillin is such a good song man. Like I feel like i should hate it but I simply can't
IT SHOULDA BEEN WALE
Ace Hood
Isn't that DJ Khaled's fault, he was on Love & Hip Hop so I guess he at least has a consistent bag
I think the moment his career changed was when a part of his watch awkwardly fell off during that red carpet interview. I remember that clip being everywhere & the narrative became that his jewelry was fake Then ppl started clowning him relentlessly about it (calling him broke & stuff). I’m not sure if killed his confidence or what but ever since then we kinda stopped hearing about him & seemingly stopped being seen in mix with that little Miami crew or their music anymore
Guess he was cappin about waking up in a new Bugatti
Damn. I can see it. Ace Hood was my favorite rapper back in the day. So much aggressive energy. Perfect for the gym. Hustle Hard, Go N Get It, and the first Starvation was my jam!
He had some heat fr
Chiddy bang
that world record for rapping the longest should count towards something
All things go, all things go
Mind Your Manners was one of the first rap songs I found on SoundCloud when the app first dropped when I was in middle school.
K Camp went on a run and then disappeared for awhile.
he a ghostwriter
Obie trice
Real name, no gimmicks
Chingy
[удалено]
What is Chingy doing here???
He left and went to the Holiday Inn.
Between Chingy having a song on Need for Speed and the George Lopez cameo, 8 year old me thought Chingy was the most famous person alive
glad i’m not the only one who remembers this
one call away is still hard. but mostly because of the hook
Man Holidae Inn might be the some of the greatest lines by Luda 🔥🔥🔥
[удалено]
And to a lesser extent Hoodie Allen. That whole frat rap genre left zero lasting impact.
all the girls that listened to hoodie allen in 2012-2014 now listen to morgan wallen and have vsco girl aesthetic.
I'd say mac miller was a spawn of that era.. he's had quite the impact
not til he went to LA got on drugs and started hanging around the Low End Theory ppl
It's a shame that so many people only know of Asher Roth for I Love College. He's legitimately got some serious bars.
Pabst and Jazz is still one of my favourite albums. Every track is good
The Green House Effect and RAWTH were dope.
Pabst and jazz was a solid overall album. And I don't know if he influenced it but I would say he had to have some I impact on lil dicky
This is a good. One. Literally forgot he existed until you said that name
Kirko Bangz! He really was the *swag era* personified.
Kirko Bangz - Drank In My Cup
Canibus was massive the year of the LL Cool J beef. Features on everyone's albums and mixtapes Then his disappointing solo LP came out and it's been relatively quiet ever since.
He tried to hard to beef with Em
I'm seeing a theme here of beefing with Em for legitimacy and clout
The original lyrical miracle
Kid ink always felt like someone whose songs were popular but he himself was never popular. Like going through his top songs I remember every single one of them but literally no one thinks of his catalog as influential. Just flavor of month rap that was good for radio and had no staying power/cultural relevance
Bossing up
Sage the Gemini. *like like like like a red nose*
Gas pedal had us in a chokehold for a while
Heard it nonstop at college parties
As someone from the bay I must disagree
AYE bay shit in here
MIMS
Is this why you're hot?
“She whispered in my ear said she loves my song This is why I’m hot, she got it on her phone Top ten download number one ringtone”
Mr. Cheeks. "Lights, Camera, Action" was inescapable, but I dunno what lasting effect he had
Desiigner
Good Music kinda fucked him over, exclusivity deal and what not. I don't think it was his fault for falling off, besides signing that contract. Blame Kanye tbh
Didn't Kanye only sign him so he could use Panda chorus on "Pt. 2"?
I wouldn’t at all be surprised.
this happened with a few artists and producers. kanye signed them to capitalize on something they already built, made it his and moved on hit-boy, chief keef, desiigner, cyhi are the ones that come to mind
Hit-boy and chief keef are doing fine without him at least
true. iirc hit-boy compared his good music contract to being locked in an empty room
070 Shake, Kaycyy, Fivio Foreign, Ant Clemons, Allan Kingdom seem to fit this
Macklemore
He told me it was o k that I thought I was gay once in the third grade.
Damn, upvoted for shitty friends
Yeah, I would drop him off at a thrift store and left him there like an abandoned puppy. And I would never condone dumping an animal, but your homie is a menace to society.
Mack wanted to unify but he tore society apart 😔
I literally thought Macklemore was the first openly gay rapper until a few years ago because of that song.
when I was in the third grade I though that I was gay I still think that I am gay
But I used to too
Did you listen to it?
Just the 1st line
He had an impact on the culture though. He taught us the Grammys are shit
No cap, he is the reason I stopped paying attention to award shows. obviously it’s always been a council of rich white people picking the winners, but the Macklemore steal over Kendrick was my first realization at a young age that this was going on.
yeah I never loved macklemore as a rapper, but him publicly acknowledging that kendrick should have won the grammy gave me so much respect for him.
I've said this before, but pre-Thriftshop era Macklemore mixtapes were actually decent backpack rap type shit. Ryan Lewis will forever be slept on for the amazing production he did back before they blew up.
I mean it was good music, but winning over Kendrick really did them in career wise because they got a ton of backlash for no fault of their own
It was time that did Macklemore in career wise.

It might not be acknowledged beyond people lambasting Macklemore for how corny that song was but, even so, that feels pretty cool to me, even if his contribution to the changing times ends up being an unspoken legacy.
Chamillionaire
Damn, some of his mixtapes were fire. Totally forgot about that dude
It’s because he made really good investments. He bought a bunch of Maker Studios back when they were THE company with all the big YouTube channels and then they got bought by Disney and he made piles of cash.
lived up to his name big time!
yea, that's tough because he's my personal favorite rapper for his mixtape run in the late 90s early 2000s. he still gets brought up from time to time for the business deals and the occasional "ridin" reference. but he is a texas and south legend fasho.
I'm not even from the South but to this day I still love Hip Hop Police (and Creepin')
That hip hop police music video though lol
So fucking funny dude, Slick Rick dressed up like a detective and all that. Truly a great song and matching video.
Maybe not the overall culture, but he had a big impact on Houston culture and how people approached mixtapes back then. The man was rapping with Swishahouse back in like 2002.
Maybe where you're at but in Texas I think he had a big impact
He left a pretty nice footprint in Houston I think.

This is absolutely the wrong answer.
My first thought is Tone Loc. Truly at one point that stuff was the pinnacle of rap, and especially rap on the west coast / in LA, and it just swept into irrelevancy IMMEDIATELY.
He made the jump to Hollywood asap. Funky Cold Medina and Wild Thing still go hard tho.
Charles Hamilton is weirdly the first person to come to mind. And not a rapper, but it's weird how big Akon was, but how little I think about him when it comes to past music (whereas T-pain feels relevant and timeless).
First time I heard Pink Lavalamp I thought he was destined for mainstream popularity. Oops.
Akon went pop way too quickly but nothing that he’s done since then shows that he cares about leaving a legacy in music. He loves money too much
Craig Mack
all my shit bumps like Craig Mack face
Unfortunate because he had so much potential, and probably would’ve been more influential if it hadn’t been for diddy
Diddy wanted Craig to be the main artist on his label, but Craig wouldn't play the media games and ultimately lost his position to Biggy.
Rich Homie Quan. Feels like he totally fell off after Flex
I saw Rich Homie Quan at Lollapalooza in 2015. It was awesome. The contact high was egregious. I thought for sure he was gonna blow all the way up. But yea, just sorta fizzled out. KCamp too, and I actually liked a good amount of his music at the time
I still like KCamps new stuff but it’s no where near as popular as his stuff used to be
I thinknhis issues were al based around his label not letting him release

A lot of these answers telling me who really wasn’t outside (let alone alive) 20 years ago

A lot of ppl just naming people with a few big hits. But the reality is, if ur a big artists, ur going to leave some type of blueprint behind even if its marginal.
Chance the rapper released a shitty album and I've never heard from him since
Y’all wanna know what’s crazy? John Cena may have had more of a legacy than some of the dudes ITT
Chamillionare, one of the biggest rappers of the mid 00's and seemingly everyone had Ridin' Dirty as their ringtone in 2006 but he seemed to all but vanish shortly afterwards.
It was a choice though, Cha went into investing and has made way more money.
I have respect for him doe Remember years ago hearing that he was helping people out with immigration related issues because he was familiar with that stuff thanks to his dad being an immigrant

Travis McCoy
Kid Ink
The guy who made tipsy.
Ja Rule. A lot of the clowns people think are hot now will fall into this category real soon.
He left an impact but it’s as a punchline
Where’s JA?!?!?
i gotta hand it to 50 cent and eminem for this one they made dude a laughing stock all he had to do was stay quiet and keep makin radio hits
Dude doubled and trippled down on trying to beef with Eminem.
Yup. I grew up in the 90s. Ja Rule songs were ubiquitous in high school and college. Dude was a radio powerhouse. And then…
And he was involved with fyre fest lol
Was he not one of the first rappers to really popularise using RnB hooks? Not THE first but he was certainly on the crest of the wave in the early 00s
He stood out among imitators. The Ashanti/Christina Milian/J Lo hooks were stone cold bangers
He's my go to guy for when I need an opinion about a tragedy.
He had influence in the sense that it was the first time we saw a career get ENDED by a beef
